I went to a party over the weekend to celebrate something really unusual: the 19th anniversary of a friend’s kidney transplant. Actually, it was a double celebra on. One of the guests was a man who had got the other kidney from the anonymous donor. He and my friend had got to know each other in hospital. He was young then, and has since married and had two children of his own. I listened to his wife chat about it and thought how wonderful that the family of the person who had died 19 years ago had given consent for their loved one’s organs to be used to save the lives of others. In the man’s case, it saved not only his life but gave life to his two children who would never have been born without that kidney donor. A lovely story and certainly one to be celebrated. Not so lovely is that South Africa has one of the lowest organ donor rates in the world. At any one me there are about 4 500 people at death’s door, wai ng for organ transplants. There are hundreds of thousands of people who die every year and their organs are buried with them, to rot in their graves. It just doesn’t seem right, does it? I was introduced to organ dona on in my teens when my mother read an ar cle about how many South Africans were blind for want of a cornea, and how many people died and their corneas went to waste. It made a big impression on us and the whole family became cornea donors. Later we became organ donors. Anyone can become an organ donor: no medical examina on needed and no age limit. The oldest organ donor was a man of 92 in the USA. Some people get the heebie jeebies thinking about dona ng their organs. If you are one of them, rather think about how your death could save seven lives: your heart, pancreas and liver can save three lives while your kidneys and lungs can save four. Your corneas can restore the sight of two blind people, while your ssue – bones, tendons, skin, blood vessels and car lage – can help another 50 ill people. Given that, who would just bury their organs? Lots of people it seems. Even if you become an organ donor, your organs will not be taken unless your family consents a er your death. In a study over 10 years at Groote Schuur, 508 families were asked for dona on consent. Of these 342 said no. Only 32% gave permission. Most families refused for religious or cultural reasons. Makes you think, doesn’t it? If you do want to become a donor, contact the Organ Donor Founda on on 0800 22 66 11 or email megan@odf.org.za. Organ dona on does not happen only as a result of accidental death. You could live to a ripe old age, and your organs could s ll save lives. So I raised my glass to that anonymous person whose death had given life to at least four people having fun at the party. Who knows how many more?

Environmental & Facilities Officer This newly created position will suit a competent, innovative and experienced Environmental & Facilities Officer to champion the Estate’s environmental and sustainability strategy, and to proactively manage the Estate’s various recreational / outdoor activities, venues, and sites. Key Responsibilities: • Develop, implement, and maintain the Estate’s Environmental Management Plan, Fire Management Controls, horticulture and recreational facility plans, policies, practices, and procedures, in consultation with the Estate Manager, including monitoring, providing reports on the plan implementation and maintenance, and devising strategies to meet targets and to encourage best practice; • Responsible for rehabilitation of vegetation as required by the EMP; • Develop and expand the scope of the Estate’s recreational facilities in consultation with the Estate Manager, to meet Resident expectations and potentially, future profit generating opportunities; • Prepare, implement, and monitor the Department’s budget for any major expenditure items / projects; • Engage with the Management team to develop projects and funding for environmental, horticulture and occasional activities, and in particular recreational facility maintenance, upkeep, improvement, and expansion; • Oversee operations and events being held at the Estate’s various facilities, including maintenance conditions affecting facility operations and security i.e., ensure facility rules and safety guidelines are followed; • Perform regular recreational facility and environmental audits to identify any risks or non-conformity issues and / or any gaps / shortcomings and take the required corrective action in consultation with the Estate Manager; • Develop and monitor control systems to prevent and / or deal with legal / internal policy violations pertaining to the environment and use of Estate facilities; • Provide training to the Estate employees on environmental, horticulture and recreational programmes and policies, including plant care advice i.e., native plant propagation / alien vegetation, basic plant maintenance / restoration, etc; • Ensure the Estate is compliant with environmental legislation / regulations and keep up to date with changes in legislation and initiatives including international legislation where applicable; • Raise awareness of environmental issues with Residents, organise visits and talks on environmental topics, and provide guidance on the appropriate vegetation / plants to be grown on the Estate; and • Assist with other duties which may be reasonably required to be performed own by the Estate Manager. Key Requirements: • Degree / Diploma in Environmental Management or related field. Plus, a business / facility management or similar diploma / qualification; • A minimum of 10 experience in a similar role; • A wide experience in environmental and coastal management; • Solid understanding of environmental issues, relevant legislation, and renewable energy sources; • Good understanding of legislation, policy, and practice pertaining to recreational facility management; • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both verbally and written, with the ability to influence effectively, and work collaboratively, at all levels; • Solid problem-solving skills, organisational and project management skills; • Good leadership skills, with ability to motivate employees; • Best practice as it pertains to facility, infrastructure, and environmental / sustainability management; and • Hands-on experience with budgeting and risk management. Finance / Human Resources Officer This newly created ‘’hands-on’’ position will not only be a support role to the Estate Manager, but also provide and manage the Finance, Payroll and Human Resource services for the Estate. Key Responsibilities: Finance • Manage the preparation of the Estate’s financial budget, cashflow statements, annual financial statement, etc; • Provide financial reports, interpret financial information, and provide recommendations on courses of action; • Provide accounting and information systems commensurate with the needs of the Estate, in accordance with GAAP; • Analyse the Estate’s actual performance compared with the Estate’s agreed business plans; • Develop trends and projections for the Estate’s finances / investments; • Manage the relationship with the Estate’s auditors to ensure appropriate monitoring of the Estate’s finances is maintained; • Ensure the Estate’s tax compliance as required by SARS; • Engage with the Estate’s Management team to ensure the financial needs of each unit is considered when preparing budgets, including a mechanism to monitor expenditure in-line with the approved budgets; • Manage and control the payroll system / services for the Estate and ensure compliance with relevant legislation; • Attend, prepare for and actively participate in the appropriate meetings held by the Pezula Board as and when required; and • Deliver the Estate’s ‘day-to-day’ financial requirements i.e., transactional processing, monthly account preparation and reconciliation, bank account monitoring and reconciliation, management of all debtors and creditors, asset register, management of investments, etc. Human Resources / Payroll • Ensure the HR function is legally compliant in all areas of responsibility; • Ensure the well-being and behaviour of all the staff are of excellent quality standards; • Act as the point of contact regarding labour legislation issues / industrial relations matters, including managing Employee disciplinaries / grievances; • Develop, maintain, manage and proactively identify ways to improve all the HR policies and procedures, including providing support to Employees in resolving any HR-related issues that might arise; • Manage staff attendance, absence and overtime; • Support annual and quarterly performance reviews; • Manage all on-boarding, probation periods and termination processes; • Review, design, implement and manage the Estate’s performance review procedures, and ensure periodic and annual employee performance reviews; • Assess training needs and coordinate learning and development initiatives for all Estate employees; • Monitor the HR budget; • Maintain employee files and records in electronic and / or paper form; and • Deliver the Estate’s ‘day-to-day’ human resources requirements, i.e., calculation and processing of payroll etc. Key Requirements: • Proven track record of balanced experience and leadership success for both finance and HR / Payroll functions; • Degree / Diploma in Cost and Management Accounting (BCom / Nat Dip in Accounting, Finance) or a related qualification; • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in a middle-management financial role, preferably within an organisation where the role also had human resources responsibility, including payroll; • In depth knowledge of current GAAP, the Income Tax Act and labour legislation; • Excellent knowledge / hands-on experience with accounting, HR information, IT and payroll services / systems / applications; • Hands-on experience with budgeting and risk management; • Solid interpersonal and communication skills across all levels, particularly at board level; • Excellent analytical, decision-making skills; • Strong leadership abilities; and • Excellent Sage Pastel, VIP Payroll and MS Office skills, particularly Excel. Other ● Manage, coach, and motivate the Store and Workshop employees; ● Plan work rotas, assign tasks appropriately and appraise results; and ● Assist with other duties which may be reasonably required to be performed as laid down by the Manager: Operations.
