Blowing in the Wind Some years back I was part of a press trip to Denmark to see its renewable energy programme. It was really impressive, wind farms all over the place, even in the sea. We took a boat to one of the offshore wind farms and were awestruck to see these massive turbines close up. Denmark has become a world leader in wind energy, but when it began developing wind power in the 1970s, it was not because it wanted to curb air pollu on or reduce climate change. It was purely about survival. The cause? The global oil crisis. In 1973 the OPEC countries, led by Saudi Arabia, shut off oil to all countries that had supported Israel during the Yom Kippur War. This sent shock waves around the world, oil prices rocketed and saving fuel became a priority. Older South Africans may remember the speed limit was cut to 90km/h and petrol sta ons were closed from 7pm to 7am. If you were doing a long trip, that was quite hec c. Denmark was par cularly hard hit as it was dependent on impor ng foreign fossil fuel for 80% of its energy needs. “We realised how vulnerable we were and had to do something to make sure we would not be in this posi on again,” our press guide said. “We had plenty of wind, and the oil crisis was the start of our wind energy industry.” It took clever government policies to s mulate the wind energy industry, and today wind generates 56% of Denmark’s electricity. It s ll uses fossil fuels, but hopes to generate 100% of electricity from renewables by 2035 and be en rely fossil-free for electricity and transport by 2050. Good luck to them. Wind power is now one of the cheapest sources of electricity. In South Africa the wind power price has fallen from R1.42 a kilowa hour to only 62c a kilowa hour. This is around 40% lower than the electricity produced by Eskom’s two new coal power plants, Medupi and Kusile. So why am I cha ng about the old oil crisis? Because we have a new one. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has sparked an oil and gas crisis for many countries, par cularly in Europe. And like the 1970s oil crisis, it appears that the Russian/Ukraine war may also have a silver lining in the energy sphere. Because of the current fuel crisis, the European Commission is taking big steps. One is to make it compulsory for all new buildings in Europe to be fi ed with solar panels. The Financial Mail says the plan is set to “turbocharge” renewable energy development to replace Europe’s dependence on Russian oil and gas. The aim is to have half of Europe’s energy come from renewables by 2030 - which is double what it is now. So like the old oil crisis, this new one will have at least one posi ve spin-off: a more rapid move away from fossil fuels to clean renewables. That is no comfort to the thousands who have been killed or forced to flee their homes in the war. But if anything good can emerge from war, I am grateful for it.
