Bog People Sor ng through my late parents’ books this week I came across one that had fascinated us as youngsters. It is called The Bog People and is about people who died in Denmark around 2000 years ago and were buried in peat bogs. Because of the unique chemistry of these bogs, their bodies were preserved. I sank to the floor and started reading it again. I remembered the cover picture well: the head of a man wearing a small cap, his skin kind of leathery, his eyes closed, as peaceful as if he were asleep. This was the famous Tollund Man, 2300 years old. He is one of hundreds of bodies that have been found preserved in the bogs of Europe, mostly in Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany, Ireland and the UK. Tollund Man was discovered in 1950 by Danish locals who had been cu ng peat for fuel. He was naked, lying in a foetal posi on, with a plaited leather rope around his neck. He had been hanged. The peat cu ers called the cops, thinking it was a recent murder. Luckily the detec ve realised this was no recent death, and called archaeologist PV Glob. It was he who later wrote The Bog People. So why was he hanged? No one knows for sure, but researchers seem to agree that he was likely to have been killed as part of a ritual human sacrifice. Others have been found in bogs over the years, including women and a few children. One thing researchers can say, because of the excellent preserva on of the body, is what Tollund Man’s a last meal was: porridge and fish. In those days most bodies were burned in Denmark – the old Vikingtype burial – so burying bodies in a bog was unusual. PV Glob believed the Tollund Man and others like him were sacrificed to Nerthus, the Earth Mother, to ensure a good harvest the following year. Bogs in northern Europe were not common 2000 years ago, as most of the land was thickly forested, so they were regarded as special. Apparently those mysterious lights one sees dancing over marshes at night were thought to be supernatural, fairies of the gods perhaps, which added to the allure of bogs. These lights are easily explained today: they are produced by decaying vegeta on that causes photon emissions. Another Bog Person was the Huldremosen Woman, dug up by peat diggers in 1879, fully clothed in a checked woollen skirt and scarf, fastened with a pin made of bird bone. She had two sheepskin capes, with a bone comb and blue hairband sewn into a small bladder in the cape. She wore two amber beads on a cord around her neck. Although 2000 years in the bog had turned her clothes brown, recent colour analysis showed that her skirt had been blue and her scarf red. I love that. No one can say what caused her death, but researchers believe there are “strong indica ons” that her death was not from natural causes. The Bog People are fascina ng, partly because of what they tell us about life in Europe 2000 years ago, but almost as much by what they keep secret forever.
