THE SCIENTIST REBELLION I love it when scien sts speak out. And when they chain themselves to buildings so the world will sit up and take note of what they are saying, well, way to go, guys! Take climate scien sts. For decades they have been telling governments that the planet is hea ng up, mainly because we have been burning fossil fuels for over two centuries. This releases carbon into the air, a greenhouse gas that traps the sun’s heat and is causing the climate to start changing. We have already seen an increase in the frequency and severity of heat waves, droughts, ﬂoods, ﬁres and hurricanes - and we have heated up by only 1°C so far. To slow down climate change we need to cut fossil fuel use dras cally and move to low carbon alterna ves like renewables. The technology is available, all it needs is the poli cal will. But do governments listen? No. A major Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report released last week said by 2019 greenhouse gases had increased to the highest level in human history. It also said if we want to limit hea ng to 1.5°C, global greenhouse gases must stop increasing by 2025, and be cut by 43% by 2030. Are world governments listening? No. US president Biden announced he is expanding fossil fuels. South Africa is building coal power sta ons although we have brilliant sun and wind resources, and although wind and solar costs have plummeted by 85% since 2010. If you are a climate scien st, it must do your head in. No wonder some of them are leaving their labs and computers and taking ac on. One of them is Dr Peter Kalmus of California, an astrophysicist and climate scien st who founded the Scien st Rebellion that now has 1200 scien sts in 26 countries. I liked what he did last week. A er the release of the IPCC report he chained himself to the JP Morgan Chase building in LA - and was arrested. It was part of a day of ac on around the world. “As scien sts we have tried wri ng reports and giving presenta ons about the climate and ecological crisis to those in power. We must now have the humility to accept these a empts have not worked. Now is the me for us to take ac on so that we show how seriously we take our warnings,” Kalmus said. They chose JP Morgan Chase bank because globally it funds the most new fossil fuel projects. UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres said when the IPCC report was released: “Inves ng in new fossil fuel infrastructure is moral and economic madness.” Yet this is precisely what Biden, other world leaders and banks are doing. Even if the world does manage to limit hea ng to 2°C, Kalmus, like many other scien sts, says 2°C could nevertheless threaten civiliza on as we know it. “Earth breakdown is much worse than most people realise. The science indicates that as fossil fuels con nue to heat our planet, everything we love is at risk. If everyone could see what I see coming, society would switch into climate emergency mode and end fossil fuels in just a few years.” Strength to you guys. The world needs you.
