JUMBO SMELLS Smell is an amazing sense. It can evoke strong emo ons – happy and sad – and it has the ability to bring back memories more sharply than most other senses. I remember feeling homesick one miserable, grey day in London when suddenly my big sister was there with me! It was not her of course, just someone who had walked by wearing the same perfume, but the scent was so evoca ve, I felt tears prick my eyes. The smell of tea with lemon immediately makes me think of my grandmother, and the happy days we spent as children in their rambling Victorian house in Knysna. I have smelled tea with lemon many mes, but it is always her I remember. The smells I really want to talk about today are elephant smells. A Stellenbosch University researcher, Katharina von Dürckheim, was intrigued by the smelling rituals elephants go through when they meet: urina ng, pooing and secre ng from glands near their eyes. When an ellie comes across a spot where another ellie has urinated, it blows through its trunk to make a “dust storm of par cles” which it then breathes in and analyzes. The researcher found that when elephants do this with urine or dung, it enables them to tell the difference between elephants they know and those they don’t – or who is or isn’t part of their herd. The researcher calls this a “herd odour”. Elephants can also dis nguish between different individual elephants from the smell given off by secre ons in the genitals, the salivary glands and the temporal glands that give elephants a tearyeyed look. The smells from these also enable elephants to tell the individual’s age. So what is the chemical make-up of these odours that tell so much? Von Dürckheim decided to find out. One interes ng result was that gene cs did not appear to play a role in this “herd membership” smell. The herd odour applied to all elephants in the herd, not just those that were related. So what causes this herd smell? It appears to be bacteria. Elephants in a herd rub up against each other and move their trunks all over each others’ bodies, and in this way bacteria move from one body to the other, un l all ellies in that herd share the same bacteria. Seems strange to think of bacteria having a smell, but I suppose we have only to think of human armpits. The other fascina ng finding was that elephants can not only track humans with great efficiency, but can also tell the difference between three genera ons of the same human family, and between at least nine people. So they smell grandma, and then can recognise her children and grandchildren by their smell. Isn’t that incredible? My goddaughter says there is one smell she should find horrible but which she loves: old cigare e smoke in clothing. It reminds her of her father who died while she was in high school. “When I smell that on someone else, it is so comfor ng.” Right now I am smelling freshly cut grass from a friend’s garden. Wonder what an elephant would think of that smell? “Hey, they’re destroying good food!”
