KEEP ON KEEPING ON I am sure many of you have been watching the horrible news about the war in Ukraine. Over three million Ukrainians have fled, but there are s ll many millions trying to go about their daily lives, despite the conflict. I had a glimpse of this through a friend, Linda, who teaches English online. One of her pupils lives in Ukraine a few kilometres outside Kyiv. “A er the Russian invasion she emailed me to cancel her lessons un l she could get to a safer place,” Linda said. When she got to her brother in western Ukraine, she resumed her English lessons. But even there the air raid siren goes off several mes a day and she rushes to the “air raid shelter” - the bathroom. “During a lesson she will say: ‘Oh, the siren. I will quickly go into the bathroom’, and then our lesson goes on.” She has put a carpet in the bathroom to make it more comfortable for si ng on the floor. Linda also has a pupil in Kaliningrad in that ny Russian enclave between Lithuania and Poland. “Her grandmother lives in Kazakhstan and she wanted to send her flowers for her birthday, but she can’t because now there is no way of transferring money from Russia.” Linda’s other Russian pupil says they no longer have access to Western news, as all these networks have pulled out of Russia. Some people now use VPNs (virtual private networks) to get interna onal news. “He said about 80% of his friends are against the war.” He said a video made by Arnold Schwarzenegger has gone viral in Russia. Old Arnie says he has loved Russians ever since a teenager when he watched a Russian weightli er win the world tle, and then says this isn’t Russians’ war, it is the Kremlin’s war. I guess it must be good to hear a famous US actor say he loves Russians. Linda’s pupil from Poland, near the Ukraine border, works as a volunteer ge ng aid to Ukraine. “She sorts old clothes sent by other European countries. Some of them are really ta y and dirty, and some are inappropriate, like sparkly evening gowns.” “A colleague told her about a woman fleeing Ukraine who travelled with her baby for six days – in the same nappy,” Linda said. Could she not have used an old T-shirt or something? The Polish pupil has rela ves in Russia. “She says her Russian rela ves don’t believe Russia is bombing Ukraine. They believe Pu n has gone there to liberate the Ukrainians.” Mmm, remember what Bush said when he invaded Iraq? He was going to “liberate the Iraqis” - and destroy the non-existent “weapons of mass destruc on”. Most of the US popula on believed that. It makes me mad how poli cians play havoc with our lives. Rulers have done so for thousands of years. But if war shows the ugly side of humans - lust for power, greed and cruelty - it o en also brings out the be er side: people rallying to help others, people’s courage, and their indomitable spirit. Many millions have died from wars, but many more have survived. People have a wonderful ability to simply keep on keeping on.
