MOON TREES Have you ever heard of moon trees? They really do exist – mostly in the United States but also in the UK, Brazil, France and Japan. They have not all been found, but Nasa staff are searching for them and many have been located. The story behind moon trees is intriguing, and harks back to a Nasa astronaut called Stuart Roosa. Roosa was an interes ng guy. He got a degree in aeronau cal engineering, but his first job was in the US Forestry Service as a “smokejumper”, a professional firefighter who parachutes into wildfires with equipment to ex nguish fires. Roosa then joined the US Air force and became an experimental test pilot. Remember those amazing guys who really pushed the avia on envelope in The Right Stuff? He was one of those. He was also a fighter pilot and in 1966 was selected to be an astronaut. In 1971 he was chosen for the Apollo 14 mission to the moon as the command module pilot. Nasa allowed each astronaut to take a few personal items on the moon trip, carried in small metal cylinders. Roosa’s former forestry colleague, Stan Krugman, asked Roosa to take 500 seeds from forest trees to the moon. Nasa quotes Krugman: “Scien sts wanted to find out what would happen to these seeds if they took a ride to the moon. Would they sprout? Would the trees look normal? In those days biologists had done few experiments in space. This would be one of the first.” Roosa was not one of the astronauts to land on the moon, but spent 33 hours in a solo orbit around the moon, conduc ng many experiments. And the seeds orbited with him. When the Apollo mission returned, Krugman collected the seeds to germinate in greenhouses. “It was part science, part publicity stunt,” he joked to Nasa. The seeds germinated normally, showing no adverse signs from their space adventure. Soon they had hundreds of redwoods, sycamores, Douglas firs, sweetgums and loblolly pines. In 1976 it was me to plant them. According to Nasa, “that’s when things got out of hand!” Everyone wanted a moon tree. Some were planted in Nasa’s Goddard Centre, some at the White House, some abroad and one even went to the Emperor of Japan. Over 300 were planted, mostly in the US. Many had plaques alongside to say they were moon trees, but many others did not because it was thought the trees might be stolen. But here’s a thing: there was apparently no record kept of where the moon trees were planted. Time passed, people forgot and today the whereabouts of most of them is unknown. Nasa scien st Dave Williams has been on a mission to locate them and by last year had found 80. Wonder if there is one in South Africa? Several were given to ambassadors, so perhaps one did come back here. That would be fun. I would love to put my hands on a tree that grew from a seed that had been to the moon. And handle this: trees that are grown from the seeds of moon trees are called half moon trees. Love it!
