A er thirteen happy years in Knysna, Pru and Mike Baker are moving at the end of February. The current pandemic and the onerous task of packing up makes it impossible for us to say individual goodbyes to our many friends and colleagues. When we arrived in Knysna we could not have envisaged how happy and fulfilling our lives would become and it is with much sadness that we will be leaving “Shambala”. We thank all our friends with whom we have had such wonderful mes for their friendship, support and congeniality over the years. We will leave with fond memories of you all. Par cular thanks to our bridge group who kept us cerebrally s mulated and with whom we shared many laughs. Also to Pru’s bridge teacher who helped us play bridge online throughout the Covid Pandemic. PETROL SOARS AND UKRAINE UNDER FIRE Two news items made an impression on me this week. The first was that petrol has hit a record high of R21.60 a litre. I cannot quite believe it. Reminds me of the story of the frog in the pot of water on the stove: as the water slowly heats up the frog gets used to the gradual change in temperature – un l it gets cooked. We are slowly ge ng cooked by the fuel price. And of course it will have a ripple effect throughout the economy, causing price hikes in just about everything we buy. Where will it end? The second item was a video clip of a Ukrainian boy si ng in the back of a car. He was about 10, wearing a kni ed cap, his grey-blue eyes brimming with tears. “We le my dad in Kyiv,” the sub tles said. “Dad will be selling things and helping our heroes, our army.” He looked down and covered his eyes with his hand. “He might even fight.” He squeezed the tears from his eyes then looked out of the window. “We have been walking for three hours and you saved us. I thought we would be walking for three days.” The camera cuts to a line of vehicles disappearing into the distance, some of the 360 000 people who have fled Ukraine’s capital. Yet another long line of ordinary people fleeing from yet another invading army. Where will it end? I wondered if the boy and his father would ever be reunited, or if like so many millions of children in war-torn areas throughout history, he would be le fatherless. I wondered also what the poor would do about the petrol price hike and the rocke ng of prices of food, transport and other goods? The re red people on fixed pensions, the unemployed, those already just scraping by on menial wages? I would so love to be independent of fossil fuels, but as individuals we are pre y powerless. The people of Ukraine would love the soldiers to leave so they can just live in peace, but as individuals they are pre y powerless. Easy to get depressed by the news, nê? But then I saw the protests, and I smiled. Hundreds of thousands of ordinary people all over the world took to the streets in protest against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Cape Town, New York, Buenos Aires, Lahore, Geneva, Tokyo, Rio, Tel Aviv, Seoul, Istanbul, Copenhagen – even in Russia. Will this global ac on stop the war? Unlikely, but it will, I believe, give leaders pause. Petrol price? I don’t see anyone out there protes ng about it, but I do hear European leaders saying they must reduce their dependence on Russia’s oil and gas, diversify their energy and fast-track renewables – one posi ve spinoff. It is easy to feel powerless as individuals in the face of world events, but I suppose the thing to do is to think of the power of people coming together to oppose them. As climate ac vist Greta Thunberg said: “When enough people come together, then change will come, and we can achieve almost anything. So instead of looking for hope, start crea ng it.”
