ROOIBOS RULES! A nice cup of tea has been the answer to all sorts of problems, par cularly among the Brits. “I am sorry to tell you your husband has been murdered. S ck the ke le on, will you sergeant?” Something that Vera, one of my favourite fic onal detec ves, might say. I suppose bustling about with ke les and cups gives people a chance to do something homely to take the edge off being with someone who has received dreadful news. But really, how can a cup of tea make you feel any be er? Well it might, if it is a cup of rooibos. Research has already shown that rooibos eases pain, reduces inflamma on, helps with allergies and is good for the heart. Now new research published this month shows that rooibos – especially green rooibos - reduces anxiety. Well, it does if you are a zebrafish. Doing research on zebrafish to find out about human health might not be as strange as it sounds. According to Carine Smith, the Stellenbosch University researcher who headed the study, zebrafish have more than 80% of the genes known to cause disease in humans. Because of this, the university’s medical faculty has set up a zebrafish research unit in the pursuit of helping human health. Who would have thought! Her research group focuses on the connec on between stress and chronic inflamma on disease, important because one in six South Africans suffers from anxiety or depression. Also, the top 10 causes of death in SA – including diabetes, TB and respiratory diseases – are all associated with inflamma on. So, enter the zebrafish, or rather, zebrafish larva. These li le things were put into dishes of rooibos of different strengths, which they absorbed through their skin and gills. They were then exposed to stress. So what stresses zebrafish larva? Exposure to alterna ng light and dark in short periods of me. Normally the larva would freeze in light and then give vent to their stress in darkness with hyperac vity. The group that were not in rooibos, did what I suppose one could call a zebrafish larval freak-out, displaying hyperac vity once they were in the dark. Those in rooibos also froze in the light but when they were in the dark, they just chilled, unperturbed. Displayed no hyperac vity. And that’s not all, as the TV commercials say. The researchers also did tests to measure something called “oxida ve stress”, which is responsible for ageing. Smith says if we can find a product that can protect the brain from oxida ve stress, it can prevent the brain from ageing. They tested green rooibos on human cells and found that it was indeed “able to protect human neurons against oxida ve stress”. This suggests that not only does drinking green rooibos tea have a calming effect if you suffer from anxiety, but it could also be a “brain food”. “The results of this study mean that we could have uncovered nature’s contribu on to trea ng some of South Africa’s health problems,” Smith wrote. Good news indeed. When I sat back a er reading about the research, I could almost hear the old Khoi-San ghosts sipping their rooibos and saying: ”Well yes, we could have told you that.”
