LEISURE ISLE COUNTRY CLUB The annual general meeting of Leisure Isle Country Club will be held on 23 February 2022 at 17h00 at the clubhouse SUNDAY AT NOETZIE BEACH was just beautiful. Families made their way from early and by mid-morning the beach was happy with children playing and whole families taking time to cool in the very hot weather. When I went to clean up the beach on Monday morning I felt so happy. For the first time ever, the bins were full and the beach was completely clean, No litter. No bottles, no nappies, no cooldrink bottles and chip packets, no cigarette stompies. It was clean. As a resident of Noetzie, I'd like to thank those families who showed deep respect for the treasure that is your Noetzie beach by leaving it as clean as it was found. Thank you Thank you. HOTTER DAYS AHEAD How was that heat wave! I was one of thousands who headed to the beach at the weekend and had a magical two days swimming at Pringle Bay in a perfect sea. Did you know that South Africa’s soaring temperatures scored some of the top places worldwide? On January 24th South Africa recorded the ho est daily temperature in the world: 45.9°C measured in the Boland town of Robertson. (Measured from 2pm on 23rd to 2pm on 24th). South Africa also took third place for maximum daily temperature on the 24th with 44.2°C measured at Tiger Hoek near Riviersonderend; fourth place with 44.1°C at Vioolsdrif; sixth place with 43.3°C at Ladismith and eighth place with 43.1°C at Riversdale. Summer temperatures in the 40s are normal in many places in the world, but not for us. People seemed to wilt. You know what the heat wave made me think of? Climate change. It reminded me of something one of South Africa’s top climate scien sts said. He was explaining what a ho er world would be like. People hear about “keeping the average global temperature increase below 2° C”, but we all have problems knowing what that average translates to in real life. “Imagine a normal summer season. Now imagine a hot summer season. The diﬀerence in average temperature between those two summers is about 1°C,” he said. Just one degree. According to NASA, the world had already heated up by 1.1°C since 1880. Most of this has happened since 1975, and we have already seen the eﬀects in the increased extreme weather around the world. I asked the scien st if we were likely to keep the increase below 2 degrees. He said all countries had made commitments to cut carbon emissions, but even if they stuck to these pledges, it was not enough to keep warming below 2 degrees. “Under current commitments to cut emissions, we are on track for a 2.5 to 3 degree – or more – ho er world by the end of the century. On that trajectory, we’ll have normal summers that are as ho er than current hot summers by 2050.” So in just 28 years, our normal summers will be like the heat wave we had at the weekend. Imagine what it will be like in 50 years. So we’re in trouble. This hot world won’t wipe out humanity – although many will die - but it will severely disrupt society and the economy. Civiliza on as we know it will not survive unscathed. Governments are not making the necessary cuts – the fossil fuel industry is too powerful and too greedy. Perhaps it will have to come from the ground up, like so many radical changes in world history. We have already seen the world’s young people rise up in anger against adults’ lack of ac on against climate change. The catalyst, Greta Thunberg, was only 15 when she started her lone climate protest. Today she is a young adult of 19. Give these young people three or four more years and they may be a force too great not to be taken seriously. For their sakes and ours, I really hope so.
