SEX, ELEPHANTS AND VIDEOTAPES Did you see the astonishing video of an elephant overturning a car on the road to Cape Vidal near Lake St Lucia? How that family of four were not injured is just incredible. And the people behind kept on filming, while hoo ng to try to drive the elephant away. I asked a friend who had been a game ranger for years why the elephant had done that. He reckons it must have been a male in musth. “Their hormone level goes way up and they become really aggressive,” Duncan said. “I have seen bulls in musth pushing over enormous trees for no reason, not to get at the leaves, just aggression.” In musth means they are ready to mate - like antelope being “in rut”. You can see when a bull is in musth: it has wet streaks down the side of its head from a secre on called temporin that seeps from the temporal gland. Apparently it s nks. Another sign is the constant dribble of testosterone-enriched urine from the penile sheath, which also apparently s nks. I have never dared get close enough to smell it. The s nk lets females in season know there is a randy male around, and lets other bulls know there are six tons of meanness nearby just cruising for a fight, so best to scarper. All good evolu onary behaviour, I suppose, unless you are a tourist in a car driving by – and fail to recognise the signs. Then you make interna onal headlines. It happened in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. You can hear the anxiety in the voices of the couple who filmed the a ack. The woman tells the man to put the vehicle in reverse and “be ready to move”, and he says: “Phone them!” “I don’t know who to phone!” she replies. Quite right – who do you phone? And anyway it was over before you could even dial. “If you come across a bull in musth, you can’t be on the same road as him,” Duncan said. “It happened to me. I saw this guy walking straight at me and I drove straight off into the bush. I s ll have those scratches on my vehicle.” So why are they so aggressive? I have read one explana on that says it might be because the elephant’s temporal glad swells up during musth, causing the animal pain like a giant toothache. Shame man. What one has to go through for sex. The musth story probably explains why we were charged one night in Zimbabwe’s Gonarezhou Na onal Park. I was with a group in the vehicle of Ac on Ads’ Hanlie AKA Rockspider. We had all been watching the sunset on a koppie and were driving back in the dusk. Suddenly round a corner was this big ellie on the side of the road. We got a fright and drove passed – and then it charged. We saw this massive creature pounding behind us, ears flapping. Well, it did not last long, thank goodness, and I remember Hanlie saying back at camp: “Look at my legs! They are s ll trembling.” They were. But nothing a couple of shots of the good stuff could not quell.

So I dig a big hole at the bottom of my garden and scoop the dog doo into it and put a handful of grass cuttings on top. Because land fill sites are designed not to rot, it's better to compost.
