A HUNDRED YEARS OF NEWS I was given a book at the weekend that marked the 100th anniversary of the Sunday Times in 2006. I was engrossed for hours. Stories I remember from when I was at school: the moon landing, John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s “sit-in” in bed, the first heart transplant, and “Beatlemania”. “A group of four mop-headed young men called the Beatles is causing unprecedented crowd scenes among young people in Britain,” said one ar cle, where “fans screamed and girls swooned”. A 1950s ar cle said Elvis Presley had “aroused violent controversy” because “when he sings he shakes his hips in a mo on dubbed ‘obscene’ by parents.” Churches held services to pray for him. A 1939 ar cle said the Bri sh Censor Department had banned transmi ng crossword puzzles to foreign countries because in World War 1 spies had sent messages through these “apparently innocent puzzles”. And the fashions and the outraged reac ons. There is a photograph taken in Chicago in 1922 of a woman being manhandled into a police van for defying a ban on “scanty” bathing costumes. It came almost to mid-thigh. In 1931 a beach constable tried to arrest a man in Cape Town for having the shoulder strap of his bathing costume unfastened. And then the horrible stories of apartheid: the forced removals, the Sharpville Massacre, the dompas, Steve Biko’s murder and the arrest of Nelson Mandela. I learned something astounding: blood from white donors was marked with a white dot so it could be given to white pa ents. The racist language in older ar cles is shocking. Sexism was also rampant. In 1922 the newspaper said a married woman should not be allowed to work because she was “pu ng a man out of a job”. In 1913 a woman in the US, who wore a bathing costume considered “a disgrace”, was beaten up so badly by 20 men that she ended up in hospital. And then there were pix of the German concentra on camps and Rwandan genocide and you think: “How could people behave like that?” This made me wonder what someone living in 2071 would think when they read our news of today. They would be living in a very different world, not easy to imagine, but we do know it will be much ho er because of climate change, with higher sea levels, more wild fires and extreme weather, heat waves, hurricanes, floods and droughts. For instance, when the person of 2071 reads about the start of the annual climate talks in Glasgow this week, and sees they began with the same old speeches but li le ac on, I can imagine them saying: “Unbelievable. They knew how to stop climate change, but they just went on burning coal and oil, driving huge cars, hacking down forests, flying around the world. How could those people behave like that?” Of course each one of us is “those people”, and the person in 2071 reading about our destruc ve lifestyles will be bearing the cost of our ac ons. It is easy to see the mistakes of those 50 years ago. Wouldn’t it be great if we could see our own mistakes with the clarity of someone from the future?
