LUCK AND PLUCK I have just bought a bright orange safety whistle. Man, does it have a piercing sound. It joins my space blanket and metal flashing mirror in my rucksack, in case of ge ng lost. I hope I never have to use them. Made me remember several lost hiker searches I have covered that ended in tragedy, but also some remarkable survival stories. One was about a young medical student and three teenagers, two boys and a girl, who went up the Drakensberg for a weekend hike. They intended sleeping in a cave, but the weather closed in and they got lost. When it started to snow, they were on top of the escarpment -10,000 up - with no tent. The girl was wearing takkies, and lost one in the snow. Their chances of survival were slim unless they could find shelter. They searched for a way down, but found sheer cliffs. Eventually they found a ravine that was also sheer, but the icy weather was on their side. A waterfall had frozen, and they slid down it, a bank of snow breaking their landing. That was their first stroke of luck. They stumbled on and were reaching the stage of cold that was dangerous when they found a ny cave, and collapsed exhausted. Their second stroke of luck. Meanwhile their parents had raised the alarm and a helicopter search was underway. The rescue team had flown over every possible route down and found nothing. They believed the youngsters had been in sub-zero temperatures without a tent for too many days to s ll be alive, and they called off the search. The parents had begged them to have one more try. “So we will go up again tomorrow, just for the parents’ sake.” The hikers had seen the chopper once and waved fran cally, but it did not see them. As another night fell, the student realised he had to act. Their food had run out and the girl had frostbite. He le the others in the cave and started walking through the night. As dawn broke, he saw a mountain hut. The third stroke of luck. He broke in, found food, and collapsed into an exhausted sleep. Meanwhile a local farmer had decided to fly his fixed wing to help the search. A sound penetrated the student’s sleep: an aircra . He ran outside and waved his jacket. The farmer spo ed him. The fourth stroke of luck. The farmer radioed the chopper and the hikers were rescued. I was at Giant’s Castle when they landed, and in between mouthfuls of sandwiches gulps of soup they told their story. Later I asked one of the rescue team why they had not searched the ravine where the youngsters had been. “Because we knew no one could descend that ravine without ropes and climbing gear.” The youngsters had made serious mistakes that nearly cost them their lives, but they were also tough and pre y brave. Above all, they were very lucky As Hunter S Thompson said: “Luck is a very thin wire between survival and disaster.” So ja, my orange whistle would not have helped, but my flashing mirror just might have.
