SPACE JUNK In April 2000, some farm workers in the Boland were taking a lunch break when they heard two loud cracks like gunshots. Then a shining object came hurtling from the sky and landed 50m from them. You can imagine their shock. This “space ball” was one of three mystery objects that fell from the sky within half-an-hour of each other on farms near Worcester, Robertson and Durbanville. I did newspaper stories about these strange objects at the me. Turned out they were the remains of a Delta II rocket used to launch a GPS satellite in 1966 for the US Air Force. They were the rocket’s 260kg fuel tank, the small pressurisa on sphere that forced fuel into the rocket engine (this ball fell near the farm workers) and part of the nozzle. They were put on display at the science centre in Century City and people flocked to see them. So what made me think of this today? Well, an ar cle about the massive increase in the number of satellites launched every year, and the increasing number of old satellites and bits of rockets that have become “space junk”. There are about 3,000 dead satellites orbi ng Earth, 100 million ny bits of space junk and tens of thousands of bigger chunks. This space junk is mostly in a big “band” around the Earth between 800km to 1,000km above us. That is also where 2,000 func oning satellites are. The junk hurtles along at 12km a second! By comparison, a rifle bullet apparently travels at about one kilometre a second. Space junk can vary from dead satellites the size of a car to ny flecks of paint. Because they travel at high speeds, a bit of junk the size of a grapefruit could destroy a satellite, and even flecks of paint can cause damage. One scien st wrote: “It’s small wonder no astronauts have been seriously hurt yet. But spacecra have.” In 2009 a dead Russian satellite smashed into a func oning US telecommunica ons satellite, crea ng over 2,000 pieces of new space junk. NASA has had to move the Interna onal Space Sta on 26 mes to dodge space junk. Scien sts say if we keep launching objects into space without a plan to bring them down, this low orbit “band” around Earth will become so crowded that collisions between objects will inevitably happen, crea ng more junk and so more collisions. They fear this will create “a growing ring of projec les around Earth, entombing us and our planet for centuries”. But all is not lost. Scien sts globally are now working out ways to clean up the space junk that includes using nets and magnets to catch it. Some are even talking about recycling projects in space. One scien st said: “If we don’t start cleaning now, in a few decades it will be really hard to place more satellites into space.” Think of the implica ons of that for Internet, GPS naviga on for aircra , weather forecasts, TV - just for starters. So here’s wishing them every success. It does rather put organising local beach cleanups into perspec ve, doesn’t it?
