KATIE METELERKAMP OF KNYSNA On Women’s Day I was remembering my maternal grandmother, Katherine (Ka e) Metelerkamp. I have always thought she was a remarkable woman for her me. I come from a family that spans big genera ons: not many people my age have a grandmother born in 1881, nor grandparents who met in the Anglo Boer War. Born Katherine Maria Sharp in the Free State, she took over the job of Post Master of Bloemfontein when she was only about 20. Although trained as a teacher, with the Boer War on and the men off figh ng, women had to step in. Communica on being crucial during wars, managing the postal service was an important job. I wonder what gave her the confidence to take it on so young. I s ll have her li le pass that allowed her to move around Bloemfontein during curfews. My grandfather, John Rex Metelerkamp from Knysna, fought on the side of the Bri sh. (He told us that a er being taken prisoners-ofwar, their first meal was Marie biscuits and red wine!) They met towards the end of the Boer War, fell in love and were married in Knysna in 1904. They lived in the Metelerkamp family home, Fair View, a lovely rambling Victorian house with huge yellowwood floorboards. Ka e could do everything an accomplished young lady was expected to do: sew a fine seam, paint, sing, play the piano, and manage a household. She raised four children, but clearly wanted more than the domes c world, so became involved in public affairs. She served on many commi ees, on the Knysna School Board and the Child Welfare Board – an important organisa on as the Great Depression had le many families des tute. A story we children loved concerned the commi ee formed to decide on the lunch menu for the Prince of Wales’ visit to Knysna in 1925. My grandmother said the dishes the others had suggested, the prince could get back home, and suggested they give him something unique to Knysna – like Knysna crab. They were horrified – crab from Knysna’s mudflats? – but nevertheless added it to the menu. She apparently returned home with a smile: “What did he eat? Two helpings of crab and an apple.” In 1929 she decided to take her civic work to another level. No woman had ever been elected to the Knysna Council. She stood against a male opponent, and won. My grandfather apparently quipped: “And if you are elected mayor, will I have to be mayoress?” Ka e had her share of tragedy too. Her young son, Hubert, died of tetanus a er being kicked by a mule, and her adult daughter Eileen died of cancer. Her life-long civic work, and that of my grandfather, was recognised by the Knysna Council in the 1960s when they were both awarded the Freedom of Knysna in recogni on of excep onal service to the town. Ka e Metelerkamp was the first woman to receive this honour. What I find appealing about my grandmother is that she did not focus on figh ng discrimina on against women, but on service, and simply went ahead and did what she thought was needed - breaking some barriers along the way.
