THE CHAOS AND THE PUSH-BACK Good grief, what a week that was! I am sure most of you are sick of seeing images of violence and loo ng in KZN and Gauteng, and so am I. I am sure most of you were shocked and angry with the rioters and looters, and so was I. And I am sure many of you were dismayed by the rather ineffectual response from government and police, and so was I. One columnist wrote that some of the footage on TV showed cops responding to the riots “with approximately the same urgency as a hung-over teenager doing the dishes under duress”. I chuckled at that, but of course it is no laughing ma er. Around 200 people were killed and the damage amounted to billions of rand. And what’s with these government ministers and officials indica ng that they knew it was going to happen – and then le ng it go ahead and happen? Just as much as we were appalled at the violence, we were impressed with the response of thousands of ordinary South Africans. We saw people making human chains outside hospitals and shopping malls to stop the rioters. Singing songs, holding placards, and bravely pushing back. Neighbours standing guard during the night. I didn’t know any of them, yet I felt so proud of them. And then heading out with brooms and buckets to clear up the mess a erwards. They should not have to do any of that of course. It is government’s job to enforce the rule of law, root out corrup on and protect the people. But it is one thing to look at a situa on and say it is not my responsibility to sort it out, but another to stand back and watch things unravel when you know you can pitch in and help, in whatever small way. The brave ac on of these ordinary people had a broader impact too: it bolstered the morale of the na on. While people felt fear, anger and despair watching the rioters and looters, they felt admira on, pride and hope watching people “hold the line” against these criminals. Reminds me of the me leading up to our first democra c elec ons. Mandela was free, a date had been set for the elec ons – but the violence intensified. At its most simplis c it was about fac ons figh ng for a bigger share of the power. There was pushback from ordinary people against that violence too. I covered an event in Cape Town where thousands had gathered at noon for two minutes’ silence to pray for peace. The same event was happening in ci es all over the country. I had expected it to be a bit schmaltzy, but I was wrong. Traffic halted, silence descended and people of all ages and races held hands, closed their eyes and focused on peace. It was profound. It really did help li the spirit of the na on. Today I was sent this poem by Cape Town poet Finuala Dowling: “A er fire and plunder, another sound: bristles raking broken ground. Amidst the trash and waste and weeping, the age-old for tude of people sweeping.”
