FLAMES, SMOKE AND ALIENS Looking at the rain falling over Knysna, it is hard to imagine the flames and smoke swirling above Cape Town from a raging fire on Devil’s Peak that has destroyed historic buildings, part of UCT’s Jagger library, Rhodes Memorial restaurant and resulted in thousands of people being evacuated. A pumping south-easter is driving the flames like bellows in a blacksmith’s forge. At the me of wri ng no lives had been lost, and let’s hope it stays that way. The fire started early on Sunday in Table Mountain Na onal Park, probably caused by a “vagrants’ fire”, SANparks said. They said one of the main reasons it spread so fast was because of the many pine trees on the lower slopes of Devil’s Peak. I remember interviewing firefighters a er the devasta ng Cape Peninsula fires in 2000. They said when a pine burns it goes up like a torch. If you have many burning together, it creates a wall of flame that is impossible to ex nguish. I remember, too, the debate that raged some years ago between those who wanted the alien pines on Devil’s Peak felled, as the land was now part of a na onal park, and those who wanted them to stay as they were part of an historic landscape, the first having been planted by Dutch se lers in the 1700s. Those who wanted them to stay won. That victory has come at a cost. The missing element in the debate was calcula ng fire risk. With climate change bi ng harder, wild fires globally are becoming more frequent and more destruc ve. It is not safe to have so many pines bordering an urban area in a zone that is already a high fire risk, in an increasingly ho er, drier world. People learned that from the destruc ve Peninsula fires in 2000 and in 2015. Both were fuelled by alien vegeta on. They learned that from the even more destruc ve Garden Route fires in 2017. And yet we s ll see dense alien vegeta on all around urban areas. Makes me despair that humans can be so totally dof. Why don’t we take ac on? On the posi ve side, there is something about fires – and other disasters – that makes me admire humanity, because they seem to bring out the best in people. In Cape Town hotels have opened their doors to evacuated UCT students. Dona ons of food and energy drinks have poured in for firefighters. Animal welfare organisa ons are housing pets from evacueeast no charge. I have wondered why people respond so well to a crisis, and have come to the conclusion that it is because of two things: first, a crisis is temporary, with a beginning and an end. Second, people can easily see how their efforts will help solve the problem. With long-term problems, like poverty or pollu on, it is difficult to see an end, or how their efforts can make any difference, so many don’t bother. We need to find a way to capture how we respond to crises, and make that work to solve long-term problems. We are a darn clever species. Surely we can do that?
