Si ng on the rocks the other day watching the waves surge in and out, we got talking about des. Tides have been so much a part of the human story, and throughout the ages coastal people have adapted their lives – and livelihoods - to that daily ebb and flow. From prehistoric mes our “strandloper” ancestors would have developed a knowledge of des to enable them to forage for shellfish at the best mes. In the early days of shipping the old ships were dependent on the high de to sail safely in and out of harbours. “She sails with the de,” always sounded so roman c. I read that knowledge of des is s ll important for shipping today because modern ships are so much bigger than sailing ships and have li le room for error as they nego ate the channels in harbours. And some commercial fishermen apparently use des to improve their catches, as some fish concentrate in certain spots during dal movements. Most of us know that dal energy has been harnessed to produce electricity, but I did not know un l recently that des were used in Europe as long ago as the Middle Ages to generate power to crush grain. They were called “ dal mills” and apparently the incoming dal water collected in big storage ponds. When the de went out the water from these ponds turned waterwheels that turned equipment to crush wheat and other grain. Clever. When we were kids we spoke about “ dal waves” and only in adulthood did I learn that we were actually speaking about tsunamis, and that a dal wave is something quite different. It is also known as a dal bore. These can be quite spectacular. They occur in rivers at spring de, in places where there is a big dal range and the river has a narrow channel. This creates a true “ dal wave” that rushes up the river against the river’s flow. In recent mes these bores have a racted surfers to ride the unusual waves. Two of the really famous dal bores are on the Amazon River, where the wave gets up to 4m high and travels up to 15km/h, and on the Qiantang River in China, where the wave can get up to 9m high and travels at 40km/h. It has become a huge tourist a rac on. A tsunami of course has nothing to do with des, but is the result of an undersea earthquake that displaces a massive amount of seawater that forms gigan c waves. Tides have also seeped into our literature through the ages and have been used as metaphors for so many aspects of life. One I par cularly like was wri en by the 19th century US author and aboli onist Harriet Beecher Stowe: “When you get into a ght place and everything goes against you un l it seems that you cannot hold on a for a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and me when the de will turn.” Given the grim past year and the tough mes s ll ahead, I think that is something worth remembering.
