PARTIES GO VIRAL I remember well the joy of finishing matric. It felt as if we had been let out of jail! We celebrated of course, as matric classes always did, and all was good. Today it’s a different story. Going to a matric party now is like walking into a petri dish of the Covid-19 virus, as those who went to the Rage Fes vals in Ballito, Durban or Umhlanga have found out. Many of those matrics are now Covid-posi ve, and several ICUs in Durban’s private hospitals are full as a result. In Knysna, 10 people who went to a local matric party are reported to be Covid-posi ve. The na onal health department has labeled Rages as “superspreader events” and has urged anyone who has a ended a Rage to get tested ASAP. Rage organisors have postponed further fes vals, including the Ple Rage. Doesn’t seem fair, does it? But then disease is not fair. It can strike anyone when condi ons are right – and condi ons in party season are perfect: crowds, close contact, no masks. If I were a Corona virus I would be rubbing my hands in glee. And a er matric par es come Christmas and New Year par es. It is all pre y scary, isn’t it? The Garden Route is worse now than at any me since the start of the pandemic. Most people in Knysna know someone who has died from Covid. Most people know people who have been - or s ll are - in hospital. The Western Cape government’s sta s cs released on Monday say Knysna has had 3,136 cases of Covid since the pandemic began, of which 2,207 have recovered. That leaves 929 people unaccounted for. The stats don’t say how many of those have died. We know that the Covid death toll in South Africa is 22,206. This me last year there was not a single case in the country. Shows how fast things change. Given the seriousness of the situa on, one wonders why people s ll walk around without masks; travel in packed taxi’s without masks; go to crowded par es where people are so close they have to be inhaling each other’s spit. I came up with two possible reasons: the first is that a er nine months of lockdown, many people have “Covid-fa que”. They don’t want to wear masks anymore or keep their distance. It’s as if the stress of the situa on has brought out the stubborn, self-centred child in them. The second reason is that the disease does not affect everyone equally. Some people just get a sore throat and a cough; other people die. There has been enough media coverage for people to work out how much they are at risk personally, and if, like many people, they are low risk, they adopt a selfish “I’m alright, Jack” a tude to Covid, not caring that they could become a carrier that kills someone at high risk. We need to think of masks as we think of seatbelts: although they may be a bit uncomfortable, they reduce the risk of injury or death to such an extent that wearing them is simply a no-brainer.
