I was cha ng about travelling the other day and said there were some places I would not visit again because I feared they would be too changed by tourism and development. I prefer to remember them as I saw them when backpacking in my 20s. One such place is the Greek island of Paros. Paros is not conven onally beau ful. It is dry and barren, as if you had picked up a chunk of Karoo and dropped it into the Mediterranean. And very windy. But I liked it because it was so different from anywhere I had been before, and in some ways, it was like stepping back in me. I was travelling with a university friend and a er staying in town for a few days we set off by bus to explore. We got off at a place the photocopied map said “Golden Beach”. It was beau ful, the sea turquoise and warm. Today Internet pics show it packed with umbrellas and loungers; then we were the only people there. Not a building or a soul in sight. At the end of a glorious day we decided to sleep on the beach. That is a bad idea on a windswept island. Sandblasted. I pulled the sleeping bag over my head and slept fi ully. I remember waking to a dreadful mechanical clunk and screech. We went to inves gate and found the cause on a nearby smallholding. A donkey was harnessed to a long pole a ached to a grindstone, and its job was to walk around in circles so the grindstone crushed the wheat. Every few steps the apparatus clunked and screeched. We laughed. It was like something out of Biblical mes. We cha ed to the people who sold us breakfast of small fish fried whole, derms and all. Another day a local man and his donkey decided to join us on a walk and we cha ed in some English and lots of sign language. A er a while we came to a small farm and saw people standing in what looked like a low farm dam. We asked him what they were doing. He knew the people and beckoned us to follow him. When we got there we saw they were stamping grapes for wine. I was delighted. They called us in to join them. What an experience, feeling the grapes squish under the soles of our feet, laughing and holding on to those friendly people so we did not fall. There was a wonderful sense of connec on with the ancient past, of taking part in something these people’s ancestors had been doing for thousands of years. I love travelling, and am glad I did so much of it before the advent of social media. I love the freedom of doing things for the experience, rather than having to look good for the next Instagram pic. Believe it or not, there is now tourist grape stamping in many places. Tourists jump in, take their social media shot, and jump out. And the grape juice is just funneled off to the compost. How make-believe our world has become.

Founded in 1937, the local Child Welfare branch is currently servicing the largest part of Knysna including the most densely populated and impoverished communi es. The Service Areas of CWSA: Knysna include Hornlee, Nekkies, Damsebos, Hlalani, Judas Square, Bongani, Khayalethu, Concordia, Oupad, Brackenhill, Kruisfontein, Middelerf, Springveld, Swaneberg, Costa Sarda, Fisher Haven, The Heads, Hunters Home, Industrial Area, Leisure Isle, Lower Old Place, Pezula, Rexford, Waterfront, Thesen Island, Buffelsnek and Diepwalle. The Organisa on is managing three Programs namely Social Work Services, Dorothy Broster Child & Youth Care Centre (children between 6months and 18years old are placed here with a Court Order), as well as eight Early Childhood Development Centres. These invaluable community-based Child Protec on Services are provided by 9 Social Workers, support staff including 4 Auxiliary Workers, Administra on staff, Bookkeeper, Child and Youth care workers, Principles, Teachers, Assistants and Cleaners with a total of 90 employees. Statutory Services and care are provided to 1336 children between birth and 21 years of age. These are services based on Orders issued by the Children's Court with reference to the Children's Act 38 of 2005 as revised in 2007. However, developmental-, informa on-, preven on-, life skills- and holiday programs are being delivered to children and families in all communi es in the Service Area with a popula on of 35 605 according to the 2011 census. The popula on in some of these communi es could have doubled over the past 9 years. Although par al subsidy funding is received from the Department of Social Development, each CW branch is responsible to raise its own financial resources. Organisa onal sustainability and con nuity of service provision is therefore highly dependent on local fundraising efforts and ins tu onal fund development. Unfortunately, pressures on public, corporate and governmental finances and the impact of COVID have seriously impacted Child Welfare Knysna. Dorothy Broster Child & Youth Care Centre, housing 50 children in protec ve custody, has only ONE MONTH of running costs le . Not only has the pandemic played a key role in the organisa on's current financial crisis, but also substan ally increased the need for protec ve services to the most vulnerable in our community. These children – all children – deserve a be er future, and this is why we are appealing to you, the generous and compassionate community of Knysna. The Management Board is currently considering a mul -pronged approach in order to increase sustainable financial resources, including a number of local fundraising ac vi es as well as na onal and interna onal fund development strategies.
