MUNICIPALITY AND ROTARY JOIN HANDS TO FEED THOSE IN NEED Knysna Municipality and the Rotary Club of Knysna are working together to further implement the municipality's Humanitarian and Social Relief Programme. "Dependent on Rotary's ability to draw donations from their membership base and supporters, we aim to distribute up to 1 000 relief parcels per week," said Acting Municipal Manager Dr Michele Gratz. “With the support of members from the Greater Knysna community, businesses, individual donations and direct payments to supermarkets, we have already been able to offer relief to a large number of residents," she said. "The Department of Local Government: Western Cape has also made another R550 000 available, which equates to approximately 1 500 additional food parcels which we aim to distribute this week.” While a function of the Western Cape Government's Department of Social Development, the municipality has set up a system and supporting structures to facilitate applications for support, systematic vetting of applications and efficient distribution of relief to qualifying applicants. There are three easy ways to apply: • SMS the word "Aid" to 31022; • register at https://knysna.comunity.me/relief/relief.html; or • make use of the new functionality on the Knysna Municipality mobile application. A data capturing team has been established, along with a call-back centre to respond to SMSs received. Gratz explained that the municipality is making use of a voucher system. "We will distribute actual food parcels in cases where we cannot make use of the voucher system. Our food relief products are limited in number and are intended for those most in need. They will only be dispensed once an application has been thoroughly screened and found to meet stringent qualifying criteria. We are working with the information available to us to identify where the greatest needs exist, while trying to avoid relief efforts being duplicated. True to the spirit of Knysna, various independent relief schemes are also providing much needed assistance to the community's most vulnerable members. "Thank you for supporting your fellow residents," said Gratz. "We sincerely appreciate every act of charity. I must however ask again that you share your data with us. It is crucial to ensure that relief reaches those for whom it is meant, in an orderly manner." "We have also received a number of locally made masks from Dr Dee Richman and her team, which we have distributed along with our food relief parcels," she continued. "Heartfelt thanks are also due to every individual, organisation, company or business who has already donated to this very desperate cause." "There is no act of kindness or charity, nor any donation too small," she concluded. "What may seem like a small donation to you, will go a long way to feeding a family. We are all in this together. If it is at all possible for you to spare any kind of donation, please do so. It means more to those who benefit from it than you might imagine." CALM AND COMPASSION IN THE COVID-19 CRISIS Knysna Sedgefield Hospice es mates that up to 22 000 people in their catchment area will be at high risk of falling ill during the Covid-19 pandemic. They predict that pa ent numbers may surge more than in the coming months- forcing them to find new and innova ve ways to share their exper se in managing end-of-life care. Hospice reliably delivers calm and compassion to families in crisis, and in this corner of the country they are poised to respond to the pandemic. To address a looming physical and mental health crisis in their community, the Hospice team are scaling up their efforts. In the coming months they plan to help ease the pressure on local hospitals by managing step-down care, sharing pallia ve care training and ramping up the number of people accessing safe home-based care. They are also training a small army of local bereavement counselors and establishing new support networks for safehouse’ caregivers. MY WISH FOR FAMILIES LOSING LOVED ONES DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC In the pre-Covid era, my dad got another incurable disease - cancer of the pancreas. The freight train of coronavirus and unexpected loss of life reported around the world has made me think of all the families who are heading for crisis like we did. For them I have one wish: That they have the gentle support of those who know what is coming and how to handle it, the reassuring exper se of Hospice. A sudden health catastrophe can knock the most resilient family sideways. Whilst figh ng with medical aid and fre ng over finances, our family tackled a formidable list of ‘most-stressful-life-events’. Jobs were quit; we moved house (twice); our farm was sold; my mother was also diagnosed with cancer (underwent surgery and chemotherapy); and last but not least, we organised my wedding in six weeks flat so my dad could s ll walk me down the isles…Throughout this all we had one constant- a weekly visit from Sister H, a Hospice nurse. Right on me, she would arrive. Always smiling. Always posi ve. Over a cup of tea, she would quietly check in on my dad, and with us. Having walked thousands of families along this road, she was there to help us. She eased our collec ve fear of death and focused us on what my dad really wanted at the end of life. When we had prac cal ques ons oncologists couldn’t answer, she was a WhatsApp away. When we became distraught that my dad couldn’t eat, she calmed us down. Her support was indispensable. There are three things I am most grateful for. Firstly, Sister H made sure that my dad was never in pain. There was no op on of curing his disease, but we could make sure he was as comfortable as possible. Secondly, when I was far away in Johannesburg, I could count on Sister H for an objec ve assessment of how my parents were doing, helping me to make plans and decisions. And finally, on the morning my dad died, I was comforted that my mom was not alone. All the chaos and paperwork was taken care of by Sister H and the Hospice doctor. In the coming months I an cipate many families will have their worlds turned upside down like we did. My wish to them is that, in the unpredictable mess that the pandemic inflicts, they have a Sister H of their own to support and guide them. at Action Ads sn’t it wonderful how a crisis like Covid-19 can bring out the good in people? I am thinking in par cular of a 99-year-old man in the UK and a 10-year-old boy in Cape Town. Some of you may already have seen the old man’s heroic efforts. He is Captain Tom Moore, a Yorkshireman, former Bri sh army officer and World War 2 veteran, who at the age of 99 decided to raise money for the UK’s Na onal Health Service (NHS). He thought they were doing a brilliant job dealing with the coronavirus outbreak that has flooded their hospitals for weeks. Captain Tom, as he has become known, decided he would do 100 laps around his house to raise £1,000 for the NHS. So he set out, wearing a jacket and e, his WW2 war medals pinned on his chest, and with the support of his wheeled walking aid, did 10 laps a day. He wanted to finish 100 laps before his 100th birthday on April 30, and did so last week. Well, his campaign went viral and by Tuesday this week he had already raised over £27 million. Captain Tom has been interviewed by news organisa ons all over the world and his achievement has drawn praise both from ordinary people and the rich and famous. UK’s Prince William and Kate made a video clip for him in which William called him a “one-man fund-raising machine”. Captain Tom said in a BBC interview: “They’ve done so well for me, and they’re doing so well for everyone else at the moment, and I think we must say: ‘Well done, NHS!’” The UK’s Daily Mail dubbed him “Captain Fantas c.” At the other end of the age scale there is Hadley Hunter, a 10-yearold boy in Cape Town, who decided last Sunday to do a 10km run for charity. When his parents asked what charity in par cular, Hadley said any that helped give food to those in need. He had seen the news shots of row upon row of hungry children si ng cross-legged with their plates or bowls, wai ng for a charity organisa on to give them a hot meal. It made an impression on him. So “Hadley’s 10km Lockdown Challenge for Charity” was born, the race tle printed out and pinned on his T-shirt. His father did a pre-race video for prospec ve donors, so they could see the track, which during lockdown had to go around the house 118 mes. His six-year-old sister, Helena, fired the starter gun, set up the water point table, put up the finish tape and made the cer ficates. It was the first me Hadley had ever done such a long run. It was ring and repe ve, but Hadley was determined, and in one hour and 36 minutes he had done the 118 laps that made up the 10km. By early this week he had raised close on R15 000, of which R5 500 has gone to Knysna Rotary food relief – and dona ons are s ll coming in. He is chuffed indeed. Makes me think of Winston Churchill’s comment: “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”
