KNYSNA MUNICIPALITY PROVIDES A HOME TO THE HOMELESS DURING LOCKDOWN While Knysna, and the rest of South Africa, are homebound during the nationwide Covid-19 lockdown, Knysna Municipality are helping those without homes of their own to stay safe. Executive Deputy Mayor Aubrey Tsengwa said that the municipality had made provisions to look after the homeless. “We are accommodating the homeless of Sedgeﬁeld and Knysna at Loerie Park for the duration of the lockdown,” said Tsengwa. “With the women housed in the clubhouse and the men lodged in tents, we have already reached our capacity of 85 residents. They are under lockdown as per the same regulations as any other citizen and are not allowed to roam outside. At least they can now do so with a roof over their heads, access to adequate ablution facilities and the prospect of enjoying a regular meal.” “We asked for donations and the response has been overwhelming. Thank you to the residents of Knysna – you have once again shown how a community can come together to support their most vulnerable members.” Donations varied and included beds, bedding, soap, facecloths, towels, toothbrushes, fruit and non-perishable food. “We are very grateful for any and all support and donations, but please note that we are NOT asking for monetary donations,” Tsengwa continued. “It is also important that all donations are channelled through the municipality and occur in a controlled manner. To adhere to lockdown regulations and curb the spread of the coronavirus, we will collect donations. Please do not make any deliveries to Loerie Park, the Fire Station or any other place.” “There is a silver lining to the Covid-19 cloud for these people,” Tsengwa explained. The new residents of Loerie Park were visited by hospital staﬀ where they were screened for various illnesses including TB, HIV and diabetes. “Those who were diagnosed with illnesses that require chronic medication are now back in the system and will receive the necessary medicines on a regular basis.” “We thank all our partners in this endeavour,” he concluded. “Especially the South African Red Cross Society and various local churches for assisting in preparing meals for these members of our community. at Action Ads OCKDOWN. Who would have thought? In some ways it s ll feels like science fic on. In other ways it is astonishing how quickly we are adap ng to staying at home to “fla en the curve” of the new coronavirus. For instance, I have just come in from a new way of “having lunch” with neighbours here in Kalk Bay. At 1pm we move onto balconies and back gardens with our salads or saamies, and have lunch “together” by cha ng rather loudly across the distance. We share news and views, good and bad. Today I heard from one that she had just got a call to say she had been retrenched. It is tough out there, and will get tougher. A friend who runs a gi shop got her last salary this morning, while her tour-guide husband has not had work for weeks. “We are all about to find out what we are made of,” she said. As I drove out of Knysna the day before Lockdown, the queues outside the banks were so long it looked like vo ng day in 1994. Along the N2 people with luggage at their feet held up R20 notes, desperately trying to get home before the Lockdown. Here is a ques on: What do you feel about wearing a facemask? By now we all know that social distancing and frequent hand washing are essen al to help slow the spread of the virus, but the messages about facemasks are conflic ng. The World Health Organisa on says you need wear a mask only if you are coughing, have a fever or difficulty breathing, all symptoms of COVID-19, or if you are looking a er someone who is sick. However, I saw a very convincing video this week where data scien st Jeremy Howard from the University of San Francisco says the opposite: wear a facemask whenever you go outside. Check it out: https://youtu.be/BoDwXwZXsDI Howard says although there is no proof at this stage from controlled trials on the beneficial effect of wearing facemasks because the coronavirus is too new, he has nevertheless found that “the evidence is so incredibly strong that this is a good idea. Like other countries they did social distancing, staying at home and hand washing. But here is the thing: the government ruled that wearing facemasks outside your home was compulsory. Because masks were in short supply worldwide, people in the Czech Republic star ng making their own. In three days they had made 10 million masks and were giving them away free. The country claims this was one of the reasons why they managed to slow the spread of the virus. Watch the videos and see what you think. Made me into a born-again face masker and I am hand-sewing my own from an old T-shirt. What have we got to lose if they don’t work? And if they do, well, hallelujah!
