Salary: R10 000.00 per month Purpose of the position: To assist the South African National Roads Agency Limited, Consulting Engineer and the Contract Manager (Project Management Team) in the day-to-day operation liaison with communities aﬀected by the projects. Person Proﬁle: Good interpersonal skill and in good standing with the relevant communities. Project Management knowledge, as well as report writing skills and computer literacy is a prerequisite.

Qualiﬁcations: Minimum grade 12 certiﬁcate. Code B (Code 8) Driver's License. The applicant must be a resident of one of the municipalities listed above and proof of residence must accompany the application.

Experience: Relevant Project Management and Community participation Experience. Other: Must have Own vehicle. Travelling with own vehicle shall be compensated for at the normal SANRAL rates. Duties include: Except for taking the minutes of PLC meetings, which is a duty of the Engineer or his representative, the PLO shall provide a secretariat function to the PLC which includes, amongst others, the following: a) Schedule meetings; b) Compile meeting agendas; c) Compile document packages for meetings; d) Distribute minutes of meetings; e) Assist PLC to formulate their communication in writing; f) Distribute written communication to and from the PMT and the PLC; g) Keep records of all the above and any other PLC documentation; and h) Provide any other reasonable secretariat function pertaining to the PLC.

on’t know if any of you go to school reunions. I don’t normally, but when I got the invitation I felt the milestone coming up warranted it. My word, it was a strange feeling to be back in that old school hall where we seemed to have spent a lifetime a few decades ago. I swear those were the same blue curtains on the stage. It was really great seeing my old matric classmates, but thank goodness we had name tags because I am not sure we would have recognised each other. But once you see the name, the teenager pops out from behind the wrinkles. What struck me ﬁrst during our Founder’s Day assembly, where the whole school was present, was the change in demographics. I was at school during the apartheid era, so our assemblies were a sea of white faces. Happily that has changed. The other thing was how casually the teachers were dressed. Ours all used to wear suits and ties or dresses and stockings. At the reunion some of the male teachers wore T-shirts, one had arms covered in tattoos, another had long hair in a bun. Pretty normal if you saw them on the street, but some of our former teachers were probably turning in their graves. Made me chuckle. Then there were the schoolgirls’ skirts. We would have envied their being allowed to wear them so short. When I was at high school the mini was very fashionable but no minis for us in school uniform. Our hems had to be just above our knees. Of course we all rolled our skirts up at the waist to make them shorter, but once a term there would be an announcement that all the girls had to stay behind after assembly. Oooh, we knew what was coming, and we frantically began rolling down our skirts. Then it was “kneel on the ﬂoor” while prefects and teachers checked the length of our skirts. AND - this is the absolute truth - we also used to have pants inspection. I kid you not. We had to raise a corner of our skirts so the prefects could see if we were wearing those ghastly regulation grey bloomers. Of course most of us were not, so we got detention. What was fun on our tour of the school was looking into our old classrooms, with cries of: “Was this 10a? I used to sit over there!” In the science lab, the past pupils asked the science teacher if they still had Bunsen burners. They did. “Remember when the science teacher was going to light his Bunsen burner and we all switched ours on full ball behind his back?” They were hoping for a big explosion and were no doubt disappointed when it didn’t happen. It was a fun day. You know how there are often speeches at events like this, where people give the school pupils advice from their advanced years? Well, my message would be simple: “Make the most of your life, every day you can, because it goes by faster than you could ever imagine.”
