Dear ACS Athens Community,
From the very first day of this academic year, our school has stood as a beacon of purpose and promise. We opened with full enrollment; an unmistakable vote of confidence from our families and broader collective, welcoming outstanding new educators from both the USA and our local region, alongside a vibrant mix of new and returning students. The energy on campus has been unmistakably positive and forward-focused. Our academic achievements continue to set a powerful standard: college acceptances have been exceptional, our students are earning placements at prestigious institutions worldwide, and our distinction as one of the top ten IB schools in Europe and among the top 100 globally reflects both rigor and results. At the same time, we are expanding opportunity, broadening our course offerings and increasing access to Advanced Placement pathways to ensure that every student’s curiosity, ambition, and talent are met with both challenge and support. Our commitment to conscious global citizenship is not symbolic; it is lived daily through meaningful projects that shape compassionate, capable leaders prepared to navigate and improve a complex world.
We are equally intentional about who our students become, not just what they achieve. The launch of our new Wellness strand ensures that resilience, discernment, and well-being are embedded into the fabric of school life, empowering students to make informed, positive, and safe choices in a world saturated with noise and distraction.
This year’s maritime studies theme, highlighting shipping services and launched through our “Adopt a Ship” initiative, connects learning to real-world industries, while alumni return to give back, modeling lifelong engagement, giving, and leadership. From guest speakers who have traversed space, to innovators in AI, engineering, and technology, inspiration is constant—and increasingly, it is student-led. Our young people are not waiting for the future; they are shaping it now through entrepreneurial initiatives and bold ideas. With the establishment of the new President’s Council, student voice has been formally elevated, ensuring that growth and improvement are guided by those at the heart of our mission.
As facility projects continue to enhance our campus and learning environments, we are proud to announce our upcoming Colloquium on April 29–30, where teacher-led research will be showcased and its direct impact on student learning brought powerfully to life. This promises to be a thought-provoking and exciting event that highlights the intellectual strength of our faculty, staff and administrators and the tangible benefits for our students. You are all warmly invited to join us in celebrating innovation, scholarship, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. Dear ACS Athens Community Members,
On behalf of the ACS Board of Trustees, it is both my pleasure and distinct honor to share with you the latest news and developments as we prepare for the 2026–2027 academic year. The Board remains steadfast in its commitment to the school’s long-term strength and sustainability, with a strategic focus on securing our future and thoughtfully planning for growth, including the acquisition of adjacent land to expand and enhance our campus. We are also proud to report that, once again, we have reached a record enrollment of 1,220 students—an especially meaningful achievement given the transient nature of some members of our community. In addition, our students have earned outstanding college acceptances across the globe, reflecting a continuation of last year’s exceptional success and underscoring the strength and quality of an ACS Athens education.
A cornerstone of our ongoing commitment to sustained excellence is the upcoming Colloquium II on April 29–30. This important event represents the culmination of years of dedicated effort by our faculty and staff across all divisions and stands as a significant milestone in our accreditation process and long-term school improvement journey. We look forward to sharing more about these initiatives at the Parent Information Session on March 11 at 7:00 p.m., where Board members, the President, and school leadership will provide updates on our strategic priorities, budget, and goals for the coming year. AcademY HIGHLIGHTS
The first IB Visual Arts field study trip to Venice occurred in October 2025, bringing together fifteen students and two chaperones, for a meticulously planned and highly enriching experience. As the inaugural excursion of its kind within the IB Visual Arts curriculum, it followed extensive preparation that enabled students to engage deeply with the Architecture Biennale and a broad array of contemporary art exhibitions. Surrounded by Venice’s distinctive artistic environment, students experimented with new techniques, media, and creative approaches while enhancing their inquiry and collaboration. This experience stood out as an inspiring and memorable milestone for the Visual Arts program.
The Academy’s course offerings were expanded this year, broadening both core AP offerings and elective choices to better meet our students’ interests and academic goals. Four new Advanced Placement (AP) courses were introduced: AP Physics, AP Calculus BC, AP Economics, and AP English Literature and Composition. These additions bring the total number of AP offerings to nine, reinforcing our commitment to providing rigorous, college-preparatory options across a range of disciplines. In addition to these AP expansions, we introduced two new electives: Cinema and Digital Societies. These additions enhance curricular breadth, deepen opportunities for advanced study, and provide more pathways for students to pursue their interests, build critical thinking and analytical skills, and strengthen their readiness for post-secondary success.
Notable IB Updates
In November 2025, ACS Athens was honored with recognition as one of the Top 10 IB Schools in Europe for 2025, in acknowledgment of sustained excellence in academic achievement. This distinction reflects the collective effort of our students, faculty, and leadership, and affirms the school’s longstanding commitment to rigorous, principled, and internationally benchmarked education.
Significant progress has been made across the IB Core. Extended Essays are nearing completion, with students engaging in final reflections and supervision meetings. CAS projects continue to reflect strong student commitment to service,
leadership, and experiential learning, while TOK coursework is moving steadily toward internal assessment submission deadlines.
As part of its commitment to meaningful service, the IB Student Council led the Packets of Hope drive. Through this initiative, students collected donated essential items, assembled care packets, and personally delivered them to the ΚΥΑΔΑ Homeless Shelter of the Municipality of Athens in Omonia. The project reflects the IB ethos of compassion, responsibility, and action rooted in local community engagement.
Preparatory work for the upcoming IB Self-Study is underway, aligning curriculum, assessment, and school practices with IB standards and ACS Athens’ mission of Conscious Global Citizenship. This process reflects our commitment to reflection, accountability, and continuous improvement. The five-year IB evaluation study process for our IB Diploma Program, a reflective review that helps us assess how well our practices align with IB standards and where we can continue to grow. This important process supports continuous improvement and ensures our program at ACS Athens continues to offer a high-quality, future-focused IB education grounded in the principles of the International Baccalaureate.
ACS Athens Virtual Updates
The ACS Athens Virtual Course Catalog has been expanded with three new online mathematics courses: Algebra 1, Geometry with Algebraic Topics, and Algebra 2 & Trigonometry (Honors). Launched during December, these additions provide ACS Athens students with access to advanced mathematics instruction within a flexible, high-quality virtual learning environment.
The successful transition of the former Greek i2 Flex face-to-face program to ACS Athens Virtual has enabled 104 IB juniors and seniors to continue their Greek language studies online. The virtual model offers small and flexible sections, a cooperative online learning environment, and a strong emphasis on Greek language development and critical thinking.

Transitioned to a 1-on-1 advisory model to provide personalized support for seniors throughout the college application process.

SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL WELL BEING Highlights
EU-Funded WISE UP project comes to ACS Athens
This year, ACS Athens is participating in the WISE UP Project, a prestigious Erasmus+-funded European initiative addressing digital wellbeing across 70 schools in five countries. Eleven Faculty/Staff members are participating in a training program in Mindfulness for the classroom. Through evidence-based “Connected & Well” workshops, participating students will gain essential skills in emotional resilience, attention management, and balanced technology use. This project is a testament to our school’s commitment to holistic student development, equipping our community with critical tools to support mental health and academic success in an increasingly digital world. This program is a welcomed addition to our increasingly rich social and emotional well-being interventions already offered at ACS Athens.
Adoption of the ISCA Student Standards Schoolwide
In an effort to further support the whole child, ACS Athens has adopted the International School Counseling Association (ISCA) Social-Emotional Standards schoolwide. The ISCA Standards provide a research-based framework that focuses on areas such as Self-Awareness, Relationships, Personal Safety and Decision Making. Through the Elementary School Guidance Seminars, Middle School BASE, and Academy Advisory classes, Counselors have begun implementing these standards. The goals is to strengthen a school-wide, research based well-being model of counseling and support.
ALP UPDATES
The Advanced Learners Program is designed to identify exceptional student talent through a rigorous selection process. Students who qualify for the Enrichment Program in grades 3-5 are initially identified by teachers and specialists based on their outstanding performance in mathematics assessments, and a score of 95% and above in two Fall MAP tests (Mathematics and Literacy).
The MS and Academy Specialists invited the faculty and staff to a morning designed to foster collaboration, dialogue and relationships. Faculty and staff joined a presentation filled with quick, practical tips on how to design accommodated tests and meet the needs of all students.
MIDDLE SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS
Health Curriculum Updates
Our newly revised health curriculum provides students in grades 6–8 with engaging, monthly health lessons that are intentionally scaffolded to match their developmental needs as they grow through middle school. Each grade level builds upon prior knowledge, helping students develop practical skills, informed decision-making, and lifelong healthy habits.
• 6th Grade focuses on foundational personal health skills. Students learn about hygiene, disease prevention, nutrition, and growth and development, gaining an understanding of how daily habits—such as handwashing, balanced eating, physical activity, and vaccination—support overall wellness.
• 7th Grade expands learning toward independence and responsibility. Lessons emphasize first aid and emergency support, physical activity and exercise, caloric intake, and sleep health. Students explore how nutrition, movement, and rest impact energy levels, emotional well-being, and academic success.
• 8th Grade prepares students for real-world health decisions. Topics include sports safety and injury prevention, consumer health, screen time management, and the risks of smoking and vaping. Students analyze food labels, evaluate product information, and discuss prevention strategies that support long-term physical, social, and financial wellbeing.
Through this progressive, age-appropriate approach, students engage in meaningful health education that supports informed choices, personal responsibility, and a strong foundation for lifelong wellness.
Middle School BASE Advisory & Unifrog Curriculum Update
We are excited to offer the Unifrog curriculum to our students and teachers, thereby strengthening and enriching our BASE (advisory) classes. This structured, research-based curriculum helps inform advisory lessons while supporting students’ social-emotional learning, self-awareness, and future readiness.
With this initiative, all teachers will serve as BASE teachers, creating a consistent advisory experience for every student. This shared responsibility not only deepens student–teacher connections, but also strengthens teachers’ SEL skills, allowing them to better support student well-being, goal-setting, and personal growth.
Through the Unifrog curriculum, students will engage in ageappropriate lessons focused on topics such as:
• Self-awareness and personal strengths
• Goal setting and reflection
• Organization and time management
• Exploring interests, skills, and future pathways
• Decision-making and problem-solving
• Building resilience and healthy habits
By integrating Unifrog into BASE, we are ensuring that advisory time is purposeful, consistent, and impactful—supporting
TEAM Fun at the MS
The 8th grade students faced off against faculty in an action-packed dodgeball game during lunch that brought nonstop energy to the gym. Win or lose, the game was a huge success and a fun, exciting moment for everyone involved.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS
This year we are piloting a Literacy Enhancement Program for KG-5 to support students who need to be further challenged in reading and writing. Students receive targeted instruction in small groups during Literacy time and 60 students are in the Literacy Enhancement Program KG5.
Math Pro is a structured learning platform designed to help students improve their math skills. Including guided lessons, practice problems, skill assessments, and progress tracking to strengthen understanding in areas like arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and problemsolving, Math Pro is used to build confidence, reinforce concepts, and support academic success in mathematics. This year our math department, in conjunction with Math Pro, extracted additional data to identify targeted areas where students need further support or enrichment material to best support their learning.
Seven students in grades 4 & 5 prepared a science project, investigating the use of water in hydroponics, and presented at the Athens Science Festival.
International Day of Persons with Disabilities was recognized by students in grades 3-5. Students rotated through five, hands-on learning stations, exploring new skills, discovering challenges faced by people with visual impairments, creating art, and reflecting on their experiences. They learned, experienced, and practiced empathy, teamwork, independence, and expressed excitement about including and supporting all peers

Elementary technology classes joined the Global Hour of AI in December to learn the basics of artificial intelligence and responsible use through hands-on code.org activities. Each grade, second through fifth, have been exploring age-appropriate AI concepts, from simple movement and pattern recognition to environmental problem-solving and understanding machine learning and bias. Throughout the 2025–2026 school year, students will continue learning what AI is, how to create it, and how to use it ethically as they prepare for an AI-driven future.
Elementary School Guest Authors & Presentations
• Grades 3-5 addressed by Astronaut - Captain Scott Kelly, American engineer, astronaut, and naval aviator. A veteran of four space flights, Kelly commanded the International Space Station (ISS) on Expeditions 26, 45, and 46 - conducting scientific research.

Innovation Updates
Innovation lab expansion
This year marked a major milestone with the expansion of the Innovation Lab within two years of its inception, responding directly to strong student demand and engagement. What began as a pilot has evolved into a central hub for interdisciplinary, hands-on learning, supporting design, engineering, entrepreneurship, and problem-solving while reinforcing ACS Athens’ long-term commitment to futureready skills and applied innovation.
Innovation teams representing ACS Athens - AERIAL DRONE, FLL, CANSAT
ACS Athens students continue to excel in high-impact innovation competitions, including CanSat (European Space Agency), Aerial Drone, and FIRST LEGO League. Through these competitions, students engage in real-world STEM challenges, from building miniature satellites and piloting coded drones to researching global problems, gaining practical skills, teamwork experience, and exposure to emerging technologies. The CanSat Team is one of the top 10 in Greece and has been selected to participate in the National CanSat Competition in Greece 2026.
Student’s AI Trash Bin now in use in the Learning Commons
A student designed (Fotini Vonatsou), AI-powered, recycling bin in the ACS Athens Open program is now fully operational in the Learning Commons, turning sustainability into an interactive learning experience. Developed over three years, the system uses image recognition to guide correct waste disposal and gamifies recycling through a housepoint system, showcasing how student innovation can lead to tangible, campus-wide impact.
Student-led hydroponic initiative now being test-piloted in elementary What began as a 6th-grade ambition is now a 9th-grade reality. Gloria Kurantowicz joined the ACS Athens Open program with a mission: to bridge the gap between urban students and the food cycle through sustainable technology. Today, that vision has evolved from a conceptual spark into a working prototype. Gloria is now leading her team in piloting this initiative, proving that student-led innovation can truly reshape our school’s environmental future.
Sewing for purpose creates for the elementary school’s Dogs in Learning program
This year, the Sewing for Purpose Club is collaborating with the Elementary School’s Dogs in Learning program to design and create textile-based resources that enhance learning and engagement. Students are producing items such as hero dog capes, storytelling puppets, and treat pouches, using sewing and design skills to support classroom experiences. Through this work, students apply creativity, problemsolving, and craftsmanship to real-world educational needs, reinforcing the power of making with purpose and contributing meaningfully to the school community.
The learning commons
The Incubator Council is a student-run initiative designed to create research-based learning projects they’re passionate about and they present these projects to peers and adults at the Innovation Summit held every February at ACS Athens. There are 36 members, grades 6-12. This year, the Council is invited to present in Istanbul, Turkey, at their Fab Lab Summit.
A Summer Experience: Widener University Course and U.S. University Visits
After students attended a one-week course on leadership and engineering at Widener University, Dr. Pelonis joined students and trip sponsors Ms. Augoustatos and Dr. Crain to tour additional east coast area universities June 22-July 6, 2025. Drexel, Villanova, University of Delaware, George Washington University and Georgetown University were visited. The group had the chance to squeeze in a White House tour and visits to many other museums and monuments. Plans are materializing for a summer 2027 course with college visits.
The Adopt-a-Ship project

The Adopt-a-Ship Project at ACS Athens connects students with an active naval vessel and its crew to build meaningful connections between the school community and those who serve at sea. This project promotes respect, collaboration, and global awareness, and additionally includes ongoing
Holiday Seasonal and Creative Events
Holiday Seasonal and Creative Events engage students in creative expression through seasonal and thematic writing activities. Provide opportunities to explore various literary forms—from short stories to letters and posters— to strengthen their writing skills and foster imaginative thinking. These initiatives also encourage community participation and reflection, allowing students to share their voices in a festive and inclusive way.
Athletics
The fall season ended late November with our student-athletes representing our school in their local and ISAA competitions in the best possible way! Great performances and results, both individually and collectively.
The Varsity Boys soccer team finished in 4th place after losing the bronze medal game in the penalty shootout. Both the Varsity Girls soccer team and Varsity Girls Volleyball teams finished in second place after two hard fought finals against TASIS and Cairo respectively.
Finally, the Cross Country runners did an exceptional job in Rome at their ISAA competition: The JV Boys & Girls teams finished in 1st place, the Varsity Boys and Girls teams finished in 2nd place and collectively, they came back with the 1st place Overall trophy. The fall season ended on a positive note for everyone - students and coaches! 168 Middle School and Academy studentathletes participated in Middle School, JV and Varsity teams representing ACS Athens in the best possible way.
Immediately after the termination of the season, a new sports season began with students trying out for the sports of basketball, swimming and soccer for the Middle School students. Competition has started and they are all preparing for their upcoming events: the local tournaments and the ISAA Championships. The ACS Athens International Swimming Cup returned with record participation. Over the two days, more than 200 swimmers from around the world marked numerous personal bests. Our Middle School and Academy athletes made us proud and we give a huge congratulations to our Academy Team for securing 3rd place! Onward to the ISAA Championships in March! A lot of sports excitement lies ahead.
Business Office
With the valuable assistance of our IT department, we are in the process of designing a more streamlined and user-friendly experience for parents in their financial interactions with the school. By integrating new technologies and improving digital tools, we aim to make transactions more convenient, clear, and efficient for families.
Extensive internal work is underway to refine processes and upgrade key systems. These improvements strengthen accuracy, efficiency, and our ability to support the school’s day-to-day operations. By refining workflows and improving coordination across departments, the Business Office is enhancing service levels and responsiveness. Our focus remains on providing reliable financial and administrative support that enables the school’s educational priorities to thrive.
Human Resources
In collaboration with IT and the PowerSchool team, we are advancing the implementation of the full PowerSchool HR suite, supporting more streamlined recruitment, records, evaluations, and professional development. In parallel, Time & Attendance integration is moving forward to support compliance through ERGANI and Softone alignment.
Technology
Key achievements include: Workstation Replacement: A total of 95 new workstations were installed, effectively replacing nearly all computers used by teachers in their classrooms.
Monitor Upgrades: 15 new 27-inch monitors were deployed to replace older models in various offices and classrooms.
Networking Infrastructure: A new rack was installed in the Administration Building’s business office to support services on the second floor. WiFi Enhancement: 20 Cisco Access Points were replaced with higher-capacity models to reinforce WiFi coverage in areas with high user density.
Interactive Panels: 15 new technology interactive panels were installed in the Academy building.
Projector Upgrades: 9 LCD projectors were replaced with newer models school wide. Interactive Board Upgrades: Several defective interactive boards were replaced school wide.
Laser Projector/Interactive Panel: Installed a high performance laser projector and new viewing screen in the large conference room located, while an interactive panel was installed in the small conference room both located in the Administration building.
Video Conferencing Owl: One additional Owl purchased.
MEDIA STUDIO
In 2026, what we once called a “school project” has evolved into Project-Based Learning on steroids. This year, our 11th grade students Alexandros Korfiatis and Manolis Georgakopoulos stepped into the role of content architects and financial journalists, producing a video podcast series titled “Beyond Success” featuring interviews with financial VIPs—from hedge fund managers to fintech leaders. The experience bridged classroom theory and real-world practice, giving students a legitimate seat at the table and the confidence to navigate high-level professional conversations. The result is more than a finished product—it is a living digital portfolio that demonstrates initiative, resilience, and real-world competence. At a time when financial literacy is ranked by U.S. parents as one of the most important subjects after reading and writing, combining it with professional-level media production ensures that learning is rigorous and enduring
The podcast becomes a vidcast! Audio podcasts can now be complimented by video, as cameras are integrated into the 7-mic audio podcast enhancing the media production experience of the students.
Media Studio is developing techniques and processes on AI-cinematography - using enhanced production techniques via AI for digital storytelling on curriculum related topics in all schools.
Alumni Global Activities
Alumni Insights
The Annual Alumni Insight Session officially welcomed the Class of 2026 into the global alumni network with a morning of mentorship and candid Q&A. A diverse panel of guest speakers shared “real-world” stories of resilience and career pivots, emphasizing that the ACS Athens bond remains a lifelong support system no matter where students go after graduation. Top quote by Alum John Margetis, “You’ll never regret trying, but you’ll always regret not trying.” — a powerful reminder about courage and taking chances.
NY Gathering
Building on the school’s global mission, the New York alumni gathering brought together graduates across generations to reconnect and network in the heart of Manhattan. These stateside events continue to strengthen the international ties of the ACS Athens family, bridging the gap between current school initiatives and our thriving community in the United States.
Greg Kinnear Visits ACS Athens
In November 2025, ACS Athens was honored to welcome back Oscar-nominated actor and proud alumnus Greg Kinnear (’81) for an inspiring return to campus. During his visit, he toured familiar hallways with President Dr. Peggy Pelonis and spent meaningful time with students interested in film and media, offering candid advice on resilience and the importance of staying curious.
His visit was a highlight of the school’s 80th-anniversary year, serving as a powerful reminder of how the foundations laid at ACS Athens can lead to the world’s biggest stages.
Alumni Artists & Authors Spotlight
The 2nd Annual Alumni Artists & Authors Spotlight officially opened on January 28, 2026, with a high-energy reception that drew over 100 visitors on its opening night. This year’s exhibition featured the works of 42 diverse artists and authors from the ACS Athens community, showcasing a powerful collection of visual art and literature.

Through the generosity of our community, whether in the form of time, expertise, financial support, or in-kind contributions, we are able to enhance programs, expand opportunities, and enrich the overall educational experience. Enhancing

The ACS Athens Parent–Teacher Organization (PTO) contributes generously to enhancing the student experience by supporting programs, resources, and initiatives that extend learning beyond the classroom. Through funding for student activities, cultural events, classroom enhancements, senior student activities, and wellness initiatives, the PTO helps create a more engaging, inclusive, and supportive school environment. These types of contributions enrich daily school life and ensure that students benefit from meaningful opportunities that foster academic growth, creativity, and community connection.

President’s Recognitions, Speaking Engagements and Professional Meetings
President’s Council
This year the President’s Council was formed- a new student advisory group that meets with the President. The council includes 6-12 grade students and is designed to encourage meaningful discussion and effective communication. Its purpose is to share student perspectives by providing feedback on school experiences, promote stronger communication between students and leadership, address concerns and offer solutions to school-related issues, and help members develop leadership skills through collaboration and active participation in the school community

Dr. Pelonis will be serving as Chair-Elect of the Commission of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA-CEE) is a distinguished honor and a reflection of respected leadership in the field of education. MSA is a globally recognized accrediting organization committed to promoting excellence and continuous improvement in schools and institutions worldwide. In this role, she supports the advancement of high standards, fosters school growth, and contributes to strengthening educational quality across diverse learning communities.
NESA FALL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE, TURKEY, 2025
2026 AAIE Conference in Toronto, Canada
Dr. Pelonis attended the AAIE 60th Annual Global Leadership Conversation in Toronto which brought together international school leaders from around the world to discuss current trends and challenges in global education. The conference was an important opportunity to connect with diverse leaders, strengthen professional networks, and exchange best practices that support innovation and excellence in international schools. She also had the opportunity to meet with ACS Athens BoT members and ACS Athens alumni.
At the Near East South Asia Council of Overseas Schools (NESA) 2025 Fall Leadership Conference in Istanbul, Dr. Peggy Pelonis and MaryAnn Augoustatos delivered a professional development presentation focused on empowering educators and transforming learning in international schools. Drawing on research-based approaches, they showcased how Action Research projects at ACS Athens are used to drive meaningful improvements in student learning and highlighted collaborative professional development practices, including innovative work from Hisar School in Turkey. Their session emphasized shared learning, evidence-informed practice, and strategies for fostering educator growth across diverse school communities.
AIE Alliance for International Education
In September 2025 at the Alliance for International Education (AIE) conference in The Hague, Dr. Peggy Pelonis and Ms. Julia Tokatlidou presented a session on Conscious Global Citizenship, sharing Dr. Pelonis’ educational model for empowering learners to lead with a focus on peace, justice, and global awareness. Their presentation explored how schools can intentionally cultivate global citizens who are reflective, ethically grounded, and committed to positive change in a complex, interconnected world—a key theme aligned with the AIE conference’s focus on peace and social justice in international education.
The leadership thread
The Leadership Thread is a video-podcast series hosted by Dr. Peggy Pelonis that explores how influential leaders are shaped from the inside out. Rather than focusing solely on titles or achievements, the show delves into the early experiences, challenges, values, and personal stories that quietly form each guest’s approach to leadership. By tracing these formative influences—often rooted in childhood— the series reveals not just how leaders succeed, but why they lead the way they do, offering listeners insight into resilience, purpose, character, and the human side of leadership. Athens Innovation Summit, Odeon of Herodes Atticus, September 2025
Our ACS Athens Academy students and administrators had the unique opportunity to attend the Athens Innovation Summit 2025 at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, where Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, explored the future of AI, ethics, and democracy.
FACILITIES PROJECTS 2025
Several projects were carried out during the summer of 2025 targeting the improvement of premises and raising the campus standards, for the safety and benefit of our students and community.
Structural reinforcement of Elementary school –phase B
Following the successful completion of the Elementary School’s structural upgrade (Phase A), during the summer we initiated and successfully completed phase B.
This phase primarily concentrated on the required structural reinforcement of the building’s eastern and western sections. The intervention involved two main elements:
Column Reinforcement: The columns were strengthened using steel plating.
Wall Enhancement and Integration: Strength was further enhanced by connecting the reinforced columns with HEB beams. These beams were then integrated into the wall areas between the columns using the Gunite technique (a method of spraying concrete), remarkably strengthening the load bearing structure as a cohesive whole.
Additionally, a key technical objective was to strengthen the foundational bond of the structure with both the ground and the adjacent building.
The project timeline for Phase B was exceptionally demanding, requiring the expertise and close collaboration of multiple parties to ensure its successful and timely completion.
Solar Panels installation
The installation of the photovoltaic system for electricity production has been completed and put into operation. Our system comprises 181 solar panels placed on various terraces. We have a total capacity of 100kWp (kilowatt peak), the output of which can be either directly consumed or fed into the city grid; this practice is known as net metering. Production is monitored via a dedicated application, and by the end of next year, we will have actual data from a full cycle.
Air Conditioning of Elementary school classrooms
To enhance student comfort and ensure a pleasant learning environment, we initiated and implemented a plan for centrally air conditioning of the classrooms campus-wide. This year, we successfully installed a modern, centralized air conditioning system in all sixteen Elementary School classrooms.
The air conditioning system’s design adheres to the latest standards, is highly energyefficient, and maintains high coefficients of performance (COP). It is capable of providing sufficient cooling and heating capacity for all classrooms.
The system has been engineered for resilience and maximum functionality. It comprises two independent and integrated sub-systems which, in the event of a major failure, ensure the system retains a minimum of 50% of its cooling capacity.
Furthermore, each classroom is equipped with two autonomous and independent inverter units of 18,000 btu each, which may operate partially or fully depending on the specific needs of the space.
Dehumidification of the indoor swimming pool
A long-standing challenge requiring improvement in the indoor swimming facility was the enhancement of hygienic conditions, with the goal of controlling and maintaining low humidity levels within space.
Given the unique conditions of a heated, enclosed swimming pool, which is a continuous source of humidity production, this project was particularly demanding from an engineering point of view.
Taking into account the existing building infrastructure, we proceeded with the installation of a new system. This system consists of two dehumidification units and one fresh air handling unit, all harmoniously connected to the existing infrastructure and fully integrated into the main Building Management System (BMS). This setup ensures the monitoring and control of air quality are continuous, efficient, and fully automated.
The new system is modern and sophisticated, controlling both the humidity and temperature of the pool area in conjunction with the ambient environmental temperature at any given time.
Crucially, the system features a built-in energy recovery system. This system utilizes energy that would otherwise be wasted by using it to primarily heat the pool water and secondarily the pool air.
The entire undertaking was exceptionally difficult, both due to the complex engineering design required for such an application and the constraints imposed by the existing infrastructure. The installation has been successfully completed, and comfort conditions in the pool area have been significantly improved.
Repairs of Facades & Painting
As we do every year, we carry out repairs on the buildings’ façades before extensive corrosion builds up on the steel reinforcement of the concrete structures. We perform specialized treatment on the steel reinforcement at the initial stage of corrosion, thereby restoring the design strength and hindering further deterioration.
Renovation of Lab 101
Following the campus lab renovation plan, Lab 101 in the Academy was renovated this year according to the same high standards as the others.
During this process, all electromechanical infrastructure, including water supply, drainage, sewage, and electrical installations, was entirely
replaced with new components, aligning with the latest safety and operational standards.
The lab space is functionally separated into two areas; one dedicated to experiments and another featuring desks for typical classroom teaching. The overall design is modern and contemporary, offering numerous educational opportunities for students. All the furniture was replaced with new, custom-made pieces to precisely fit our needs, both educational and storage related. The materials chosen are of the highest quality and suitable for heavy use, capable of dealing with chemical agents and corrosive liquids. Furthermore, a natural gas system was installed in the lab, accompanied by all the necessary safety measures, providing the capability to conduct a variety of experiments.
Gym floor
The parquet flooring of the indoor basketball court was fully replaced with new, solid oak hardwood flooring. New line markings and court colors were applied to give it a look consistent with contemporary trends.
Fire Doors – Fire resistant stairways
Aligning with Fire Service regulations, we converted all the main stairwells of the Middle School and Academy into protected stairwells (fire-rated compartments), establishing safe and fire-protected escape routes in case of a fire. This year, we completed the installation of the fire doors, rated for 60 or 90 minutes of fire resistance as required by the specifications.
Renovation of Learning Commons floor
Painting of the Elementary School
Several interventions were made at the elementary school with the aim of changing the external appearance of the building to make it cheerier and more appealing for young children. For this purpose, some vibrant colors were chosen, which were used to paint sections of the exterior walls under a uniform pattern, and to an extent and degree that creates a pleasant aesthetic result without being overwhelming.
Extension of Innovation Lab
Due to increased needs, the Innovation Lab was expanded and a new supplementary space of approximately 100m2 was constructed, which includes a teaching and learning area for students, an office, and a storage room. The areas are fully airconditioned and appropriately configured for the students’ needs.
Continuing the renovation plan for the Learning Commons from last year, this year we replaced the old flooring on the first level with woodlooking tiles, giving the entire space a unified, appealing look.
Waterproofing
Renovation of Accounting
The Accounting and Financial Services office space was redesigned and fully renovated to meet the needs and accommodate more employees. The new space can host 12 employees in a welcoming and modern environment. During the renovation, provisions were made for the replacement of the basic electromechanical infrastructure, plumbing, heating, and electrical installations, as well as the air conditioning and ventilation of all areas.
In line with our maintenance plan, this year we maintained the waterproofing of the Annex terrace, waterproofed a main drain channel at the pool, and carried out necessary repairs for the Elementary School reinforcement project.
Electrical main switchboards
According to the plan for the staged replacement of the main electrical infrastructure, during this period we undertook the upgrade of the main switchboards coupled with the reorganization and rearrangement of key electrical loads. The objective was to promote an even distribution of electrical
loads between the two substations by partially unloading one and transferring loads to the other, thus achieving a more balanced operation. In this context, we replaced and upgraded a Main Distribution Board (MDB) to facilitate the targeted load redistribution.
Preventive Maintenance Plan Works
As in previous years, we successfully executed numerous maintenance tasks on all main machinery and equipment according to our annual Preventive Maintenance Plan. This systematic approach is critical for ensuring the reliability and longevity of our core assets, minimizing the risk of unexpected failures, and maximizing operational uptime.
