Chairman’s Welcome

Good afternoon everyone, and a very warm welcome to Ash Grove for our President’s Luncheon and our final home game of the season, as Amersham & Chiltern take on league leaders Colchester RFC. It’s fitting that our last home fixture brings together two clubs at opposite ends of the table, but united by a shared love of rugby and the spirit of competition. Colchester have been outstanding this season and fully deserve their place at the top, so we know we face a real challenge today. But as we all know, rugby has a way of producing special days, and with so much at stake for our survival in Level 5, I’ve no doubt our players will give everything for the badge, the club and all of you here supporting them. Today is also a chance to reflect and to give thanks.

A huge thank you to our President and the volunteers who have put together today’s luncheon - one of the highlights of our social calendar. And, of course, an enormous appreciation goes to every volunteer, sponsor, coach, team manager and supporter who has given time, energy, and commitment throughout the season.

Clubs like ours simply don’t function without that selfless effort, whether on the gate, behind the bar, marking pitches at dawn, or nurturing our minis and juniors on a Sunday morning. You are the beating heart of Amersham & Chiltern RFC. To our players, from 1st XV through to colts and minis, thank you for representing our colours with pride. To our coaching and support teams, your hard work and professionalism are hugely valued. And, especially to our sponsors and partners whose backing sustains us week in, week out - we’re incredibly grateful.

So, as we head into this decisive match, let’s make today one to remember - full of pride, passion and support from touchline to terrace. Enjoy the lunch, enjoy the rugby, and let’s get behind the boys one last time at home this season. Come on you Chilts!

MATCH REPORT

TIME FOR PRAYERS AS CHILTERN LET SLIP AT GALLANT WESTCLIFF

Livin’ on a prayer - Bon Jovi 1986

‘We’ve gotta hold on to what we’ve got It doesn’t make a difference if we make it or not We get each other, and that’s a lot for love We’ll give it a shot’

With 2 matches remaining - this week league leaders and unbeaten Colchester, we will need all the President’s men and ladies supporting just like a Westcliff Ladies Day, and who knows. Then it’s an away trip to Southend for the fight to stay up to continue

Exciting stuff!

Both these matches follow our fine away victory against Shelford a couple of weeks previously. All teams, though, suffer a bit of the stop-andstart which results from the 6 Nations. England apparently needs as much help as possible, and therefore, players are encouraged to go and support them. Very noble, really. Winning for all teams is crucial, and therefore, the hope has been for maximum points from all of them. We did give it a good go.

Saturday 7th March 2026 - Weedon Lane, Amersham

Amersham and Chiltern 1XV - 29 Medway 1XV 22 (H/T 19-5)

12th V 10th - Previously, in November 2025, it was Medway 29, Amersham and Chiltern 28 on a windy and wet day, where the wind and rain advantage was undoubtedly to Medway’s advantage in the 2nd half. This match was well timed as it fell on ‘Digger Day’ - always a busy one with a big lunch and big hospitality from all at Arnolds Funeral Care. Big crowd and Big relief after another fine win. A&C’s dominant

early possession and strong defensive pressure led to Medway making mistakes as they tried to break through. A&C’s opening try came from a Medway knock-on on the halfway line, with the ball spun out through the backs, with Centre, Sammy Sinclair, then cutting through before Ben Harris (Stand-off) sprinting into space and off-loading to 2nd Row Jordan Scott for the try under the posts. Conversion from full-back Louie

MATCH REPORT

Mould (7-0). Then, on 25 mins, it was Jordan again getting our 2nd try after a maul over the line - missed conversion (12-0). Dave Francis then celebrated our 3rd try on 39 minutes again from a resulting maul - converted by Louie (19-0) and very well deserved. Consolation Medway try just before half-time and unconverted 19-5 (HT). After taking a quick penalty, Medway secured their 2nd try (19-10) - missed conversion. Conor Segre then found space after being camped on the Medway line for the bonus point 4th try - missed conversion (24-10). Jordan Scott

MATCH REPORT

then secured his third try and our 5th finishing an excellent forwards attack (29-10) - missed conversion. Frustratingly, we gifted Medway an intercept and another soft try, handing them what could be 2 very valuable points. Chiltern dominated, and the form looked good.

Team - 1. Doug McGregor-Smith 2. David Cole 3. Charlie Swerling 4. Harry Bradshaw 5. Jordan Scott 6. Mike Everett 7. Josh Finch (c) 8. David Francis 9. Conor Segre 10. Ben Harris 11. MATCH REPORT

Saturday 21st March 2026 - The Gables, Rochford

Westcliff 28 Amersham and Chiltern 17 (HT 23-12)

10th v 11th - Previously, in November 2025, it was Amersham and Chiltern 17, Westcliff 6. Mike Everett was the most impressive, flying into Southend Airport, climbing over the fence after flying in from the Alps. Also, Cam Shaw’s big day as a bus virgin. He took it well. It was hoped that this would be our 3rd win in a row and give us a decent chance of securing a home play-off place. Westcliff started well and put us under pressure from the outset. With it being ladies’ day for the club, they were not short of loud support. It was a bit like a choir with the bass and soprano in perfect blend. Westcliff had a cautious opening, selecting to kick the penalties after poor Chiltern discipline. The first kicked penalty in the 7th min (3-0). Then a terrific opening Chiltern try from Mike Everett - unconverted (3-5). Another kicked Westcliff penalty 17th min (6-5). Westcliff then applied more pressure, and a good backs move got their second try - converted (13-5). A 3rd duly followed in the 26th min - unconverted

(18-5) and then a 4th and bonus point try in the 30th min - unconverted (23-5). Just before the h/t whistle, Jordan Scott went over for our second try - converted (23-12). Just the 2 tries in the 2nd half, Jordan Scott again applying the pressure with our 3rd on 46th - unconverted (23-17), and then a 5th try for Westcliff in the 49th - unconverted. A&C applied a lot of line pressure on Westcliff to try to take the lead. Good game management, slowing the game down with scrums, etc., meant that momentum was hard to maintain. Brave effort from Westcliff and rewarded.

Team - 1. Doug McGregor-Smith 2. David Cole 3. Charlie Swerling 4. Harry Bradshaw 5. Jordan Scott 6. Mike Everett 7. Josh Finch (c) 8. David Francis 9. Ben Harris 10. Alex Bower 11. DAY Friday 8th May

VIEW FROM THE TOUCHLINE

Pete Gibson - March 28th, 2026

The second half of the season is well underway. We are looking forward to the evenings drawing out and some drier pitches for training and playing on. Expectations remain high for all senior teams as we come into the business end of the season.

1st XV Update: It’s been a turbulent season so far with many great performances and just too many near win opportunities. As of today, we are sitting eleventh on the league table.Played 20 – lost 14, won six. With 37 points.

The last league game loss against Westcliff was a tough pill to swallow. Both teams requiring to win. On this occasion Westcliff made less mistakes and took the chances when they arose. Half time was 2312 to them and a final score of 27-17. We entered the red zone on many occasions in the second half but just couldn’t finish with the tries required to take the game away from them.

Upcoming games:

Colchester today Sat 28th Feb (Home)

Southend Saxons Sat 11th April (away)

Coaching Update:

1st XV & Senior Head coach, Rich Hoskins has decided to take a step back after this season.

I would just like to take this opportunity to thank Rich myself personally and the entire club for all the hard work and dedication over the past seven years. Rich has been a massive part of the club’s overall success in the past five years particularly and has been solid throughout. Achieving 1st XV promotion to level 5 rugby in the 23-24 season by winning the Reginal 2 Thames league.

Rich has gone over and above time & time again and has put in many extra hours to the coaching of the senior set up.

We wish Rich the very best in his future rugby endeavors and wish wife Sara, daughters Molly & Rosie a very successful future.

You are welcome at A+C anytime – you are all part of our rugby family.

Thank you for all you have done.

2nd XV Update: Continuing the absolutely outstanding performance so far in the Counties 2 BBO East League. Sitting forth in the league with 56 points as of today, (equally on 56 are Maidenhead 2’s) and only four points behind local rivals Beaconsfield with 60 points and with a game in hand.

The 2’s game scheduled for last Saturday was called off late Friday night as Marlow 2’s could not field a team – this was a great shame put we did obtain full points.

Today our 2’s play Bracknell III. Bracknell has also been struggling with fielding a regular team so, figures crossed the game goes ahead as I write this.

Still, everything is to play for in the second half of the season.I’m 100% confident that the players, coaches Phil John and Dan Burke and skipper Dave Cole will bring the “Winner’s Trophy” back to Weedon Lane.

3rd XV Update: It’s been a frustrating season so far. Bad weather and player availability form A+C and opposition teams has been a challenge. It’s never easy and I believe we have the making of a good fun and friendly league structure moving forward. Maybe mixing club sides and players together is a way forward - let’s see. It is very clear though, that the appetite for Senior men’s social rugby is on the decline. The only way to improve this is that younger players when they finish playing 1st XV / 2nd XV rugby is to continue to enjoy the game for what it is at a more social level.

VIEW FROM THE TOUCHLINE

Pete Gibson - March 28th, 2026

The game planned for Friday 20th March vs Marlow away was sadly cancelled by A+C because we were unable to raise a team….again very disappointing.

The next game is scheduled for Friday April 10th vs Maidenhead (Home) – fingers crossed for that one to go ahead.

Colts Update:

The Colts had an amazing season winning the OBB Div 2 League.

We won 9 out of 10 league games and only just missed out on a perfect 10 out of 10 with a lastminute try scored by Henley.

It was a season where we have often turned up with only 15 players which meant that ALL the guys had to dig deep, work hard for each other and they still came out on top – often with a good points margin difference!

They also often played out of their own preferred positions which was testament to their abilities & selflessness to the team.

This season the coaches worked hard on building strong bonds across the squad and the boys really performed & built a great team spirit – this had a massive impact on the season & their results.

ALL the players were outstanding & its very difficult to highlight any of them over the one another but one or two mentions would go to:

Joe Wildman for a great season as captain and often leading the charge on the pitch

Rory Webber who played every game at SH and was absolutely solid providing great service, a calm head in the team chats and laser focused tackling Ranulph Lockwood – was a great leader on the pitch and a brilliant laugh off the pitch playing every game at hooker – helped us dominate lineouts and provided solid attack and defence. Also brought

back “the shoey” after winning the league……. For those that don’t know its taking libation from a team mates shoe.

Tino Takavadiya – he was a new player this season – he was the smallest player on the pitch but probably had the biggest heart – never took a backwards step, often targeting the oppo’s biggest lad and often had to get told by the coaches to stop carrying into contact! He was fearless and had heaps of gas often showing the oppo his speed & footwork by leaving them in his wake

We could seriously keep highlighting other players because they all played so well and the coaches were hugely proud of each and every one of them –lastly we hope we can deliver a number of great u18 players who will join their other teammates already in the seniors and help keep A&C the dominant club it is !!

“Colts coaching perspective”

If it’s too late - no problem….

Women’s Update: Vicky, Simmo & Gareth continue to drive the women’s team forward. Thank you for all the continued support and effort.

No matches over the past week to report on but training continues each week along with gym sessions taking place on Thursday evenings. Keep up the good work everyone.

Upcoming matches.

Tomorrow, Sunday 29th the woman play a combined A+C / Aylesbury team vs Abingdon side.

KO 2pm – Home.

See you all on the touch line soon.

U16sBUCKS CUP CHAMPIONS 2026

OUR U16 CHERUBS ARE FULL OF TRICKS AS WE TAKE OFF OUR HATS AND SALUTE OUR 3-TIME BUCKS CHAMPIONS

Three Times a ladyThe Commodores - 1978

‘Thanks for the times that you’ve given me

The memories are all in my mind

And now that we’ve come to the end of our rainbow

There’s something I must say out loud

You’re once, twice, three times a lady

And I love you

Yes, you’re once twice, three times a lady

And I love you, I love you’

Milton Keynes may well have been home to plastic cows and quite a ridiculous number of roundabouts, but Polo Mint City is now synonymous with Chiltern success as we pay homage to a group of boys who have excelled for a very long time. As next year’s Colts, we can only now look forward in hope of a quadruple of Bucks Cup wins and a number of fresh initiations to senior rugby at A&C.

Nothing beats a bus on a warm Spring Day. The smell of suntan cream - factor 50- for the fairheaded and a supply of cold cider sitting in ice within a collection of ice boxes. A repeat of last year’s U15 cup final, the pitch was firm, dry and

ready to support the champagne rugby that was to follow. Amersham and Chiltern versus High Wycombe - never for the faint-hearted, and the crowd stood in universal expectation.

The toss was important as the pitch sloped. HW won the toss and chose to receive. A&C chose to run up the hill - in a Kate Bush kind of way - whilst they were fresh, with the plan to then run down the hill in a charge for victory. Very Wise!!

And so to the action. HW penalty (0-3). A&C took a deep breath before running up that hill and scoring the best try of the day with George W putting winger Oscar B into a gap before diving over. Seb S converted (7-3). HW were up for it though and soon scored their 1st try with a slick move from a lineout. Duly converted (7-10). Noa F then got our 2nd try cutting through a diminishing defensive line and going for glory under the posts - duly converted by Seb S (14-10).

HW, though, wouldn’t roll over, and with A&C being a bit naughty on a few occasions, HW ensured some sustained pressure to get their next try from close range and a well-deserved (14-17) lead at half-time. A&C had played up hill. The 2nd half charge was planned.

15 mins into the 2nd half was the nerviest period, and a single score came by way of a penalty for the trusty HW stand-off (14 -20). They were just making things exciting as the moment came and the charging ensued (just like Braveheart on the Bannockburn field). Theo D finished off a terrific running move, scoring in the corner with Noa F, then stepping up and converting (21-20). Oscar B then does what he does and turned the HW inside out before scoring under the posts

- converted Noa F (28-20). After all this backs play the forwards then started to rumble before Fabian J-M received a fine off-load before diving over (35-20) conversion Seb S. Fabian J-M then was on a roll and presented Theo D with a chance to use the afterburners from inside our half before bursting clear and scoring another. Seb S converted (42-20).

All credit, though, to HW, they never gave up. Some more naughtiness and poor game management by A&C saw 2 good late tries from HW as a deserved reward. Final Score 42-34

A&C U16’s Joint Head Coach Richard Clifford commented, “I am so proud of everyone involved in the age group, players, coaches and parents. They are such a special group and fully deserve this ending to their time in Junior rugby. Massive credit also has to go to High Wycombe for their performance today and in last year’s final. I hope their players are proud of how they played”

SPONSORS AND ADVERTISERS

Why do we need Sponsors and Advertisers?

The rugby club is run as a charity and in a good year the income from subs and the clubhouse events and sponsors means we just about break even.

Last season we celebrated 100 years of our active presence in the local community. The senior club was founded in 1924 and just as importantly we were one of the pioneer clubs who started mini rugby 51 years ago. We continue to provide a wonderful rugby experience for players and supporters of all ages.

Peter, pictured here, always in his A&C attire, chatting on match day

Our loyal members are very supportive and over the years we have done various fundraising schemes to improve every aspect of the club. The clubhouse itself was the biggest and others have followed such as the solar panels, the new car park and of course the borehole. All of these investments make it possible to start the season.

Incidentally with our energy costs increasing dramatically we need to focus on ways to become more energy efficient. We continually invest and the Centenary fundraising offers a great opportunity to make more progress. One reason for doing this is to make the club house the kind of place people will want to use for events, from private parties to corporate away days.

Of course, our sponsors and advertisers are always welcome at the club for lunch on home match days.

So, without the support of our sponsors and advertisers it would just not be possible to contemplate the level of capital expenses we face every year. We have a huge responsibility to our members and to the wider community, we get no external support even though we are one of the biggest sports clubs in the area and provide outstanding pastoral care and specialist coaching to players of all ages and their coaches too.

We recognise that in return for the fantastic support we get we need to work with our sponsors and advertisers to see how we can help them.

Ruthie Brockett, our Sponsorship & Publicity Manager, will be delighted to hear from you with ideas and suggestions. Please contact her on sponsorchilternrugby@gmail.com

Most importantly we want our members to enjoy using the products and services in this programme.

Thank you for supporting our great Club.
