Chairmans Welcome Welcome to Amersham and Chiltern’s online match programme. A particular welcome to the players, officials, and supporters of our visitors. As we have for the past few years, for 2021/22 our 1st XV will play in the London 1 North league of the RFU’s London and South-East Division. This is Level Six of the RFU pyramid and provides a standard of rugby that is very testing for a club from a relatively small town like Amersham. We are proud to compete here. We are also very proud to be the current Bucks County champions. Thanks to the vagaries of RFU administration, our 2nd XV is in the South West Division, and play in Bucks, Berks and Oxon Division One. This Level Eight league is as high as they can go in the pyramid as a second team. The Third XV play in the Herts and Middlesex Merit Table 4 and provide competitive but social rugby for those who cannot commit to weekly league matches and training. Like most clubs we are always looking for new players. If you would like to join in, at any level, please contact our Club Captain Jack Kenyon, through the club website. Alternatively, go old school and ask at the bar, or speak to anyone involved with one of the teams. You will be very welcome.
Sections, providing rugby for children from Under 6 to Under 18. We currently hold the County Cup at every age group. The club is absolutely buzzing on a Sunday when training and matches take place. If you have a child who would like to try rugby or one who already plays, please contact Rob Elms (Minis) or Duncan Yarroll (Juniors) through the club website - or just bring your boy or girl along. Please take some time to read the other pages of this programme and check out our fantastic sponsors. They are all great local companies; without their support it would be very difficult for us to continue. If you could use any of them, and mention where you saw their name, you would be doing the club and the game a real service. I wrote the first draft of this introduction in September 2020. A year later, you’ve no idea how pleased I am that you’re finally leaning on the fence on a Saturday afternoon, waiting for your Chiltern boys to come out and play some 15-a-side rugby. Let’s go!

FROM THE TOUCHLINE by Huw Thomas Happy New Year! Isn’t it great to see the days getting longer and the light coming back? This afternoon, we welcome the players, officials, and supporters of Thurrock RFC for a London One North league game at Ash Grove. This is our first home return fixture of the season; we visited Thurrock in September and held on for a close win by 39-33. Let’s hope for an equally exciting game today. Mr Ainsworth-Taylor of the London Society will be keeping order and he is very welcome too. This is the First XV’s first home game since we played league challengers Shelford on 4 December, when we conceded a last minute try to lose 29-25. Despite the result, it was a very good performance, so it was all the more disappointing when, the following week, we failed to capitalise on a substantial lead at Old Haberdashers and went down 18-15. Covid ruled out the Harpenden match on the last Saturday before Christmas. Last week, the boys upped their game again against high-flying Colchester: two tries from Jacques O’Driscoll and one from Robert Hughes were allowed by the referee but another two were chalked off for apparently forward passes. Colchester, who were awarded seven points for bouncing the ball over the try line, were gracious enough to concede that the 34-17 final score flattered them – but winners can laugh….. These results leave us ninth in the table, two places above our guests. Our second XV are also at home today, against Windsor in a return BBO1 fixture. Mr James Dowds of Bucks RFURS is in charge, and it is good to see him again. We won 6414 at Home Park in September, but we had a very strong side that day and Windsor have had a couple of decent results lately, so it could be a lot closer this afternoon (not that Ed Wainwright hasn’t got a good team out). Although they are having a great season, the 2s have lost their last two games. They went to Reading on 11 December with fourteen men, largely to ensure that the club could honour the third team fixture. They lost what sounds like a fantastic game by 39-32, and still believe that they could have won. Last week, they made the short trip to Thame to play Chinnor, where the home side prevailed 22-17. Back on track today, boys! Finally, it’s my great pleasure to welcome Nathan Wilkinson back to Chiltern today – it’s been too long, Ginge. I believe that Nathan played a few games for Thurrock before realising that Bucks was the place to be, so this is an obvious day for (no doubt, one of) his 50th birthday celebrations. He’s assembled a faintly alarming group of people to mark the occasion, and our treasurer Ross Bugden is anticipating a bumper day at the bar. Huw
