Chairmans Welcome Welcome to Amersham and Chiltern’s online match programme. A particular welcome to the players, officials, and supporters of our visitors. As we have for the past few years, for 2021/22 our 1st XV will play in the London 1 North league of the RFU’s London and South-East Division. This is Level Six of the RFU pyramid and provides a standard of rugby that is very testing for a club from a relatively small town like Amersham. We are proud to compete here. We are also very proud to be the current Bucks County champions. Thanks to the vagaries of RFU administration, our 2nd XV is in the South West Division, and play in Bucks, Berks and Oxon Division One. This Level Eight league is as high as they can go in the pyramid as a second team. The Third XV play in the Herts and Middlesex Merit Table 4 and provide competitive but social rugby for those who cannot commit to weekly league matches and training. Like most clubs we are always looking for new players. If you would like to join in, at any level, please contact our Club Captain Jack Kenyon, through the club website. Alternatively, go old school and ask at the bar, or speak to anyone involved with one of the teams. You will be very welcome.
Sections, providing rugby for children from Under 6 to Under 18. We currently hold the County Cup at every age group. The club is absolutely buzzing on a Sunday when training and matches take place. If you have a child who would like to try rugby or one who already plays, please contact Rob Elms (Minis) or Duncan Yarroll (Juniors) through the club website - or just bring your boy or girl along. Please take some time to read the other pages of this programme and check out our fantastic sponsors. They are all great local companies; without their support it would be very difficult for us to continue. If you could use any of them, and mention where you saw their name, you would be doing the club and the game a real service. I wrote the first draft of this introduction in September 2020. A year later, you’ve no idea how pleased I am that you’re finally leaning on the fence on a Saturday afternoon, waiting for your Chiltern boys to come out and play some 15-a-side rugby. Let’s go!

FROM THE TOUCHLINE by Huw Thomas Today we are very happy to welcome the players, officials, and supporters of Southend RFC back to Ash Grove. Although they are two places above us in what is a very congested L1N table, both teams have the same number of points, so we are looking forward to a very close game. Mr Ian Townsend will be refereeing the match; he is very welcome too. Pete Gibson brought his little black book along to our last home game against Chingford and inspired/scared the boys to a 40-12 win. Dave Francis grabbed two tries and Will Drewett, Peter Hughes, Dan Kingsley and Jack Kenyon also crossed the whitewash. Reviewing the game on our new Veo camera (that big tripod thing), the coaches thought we left a couple of tries out there, but they can be picky. Our defence was strong and our discipline was good and we’d definitely have taken that result at kick-off. Pete says it was a one game only appearance, but you never know. Last week, we travelled by various modes of transport to Eton Manor, who were riding high in the table. A blown tyre on the M25 meant that Ross Bugden and Jack Kenyon were severely delayed, and we had to start the game with a squad of sixteen. It was good to see Stuart Rogers and Kieran Booth back on the field, and Andrew Toole making a well-deserved 1st XV starting debut. Miraculously, a hastily reshuffled team produced probably our best forty minutes of the season and we were 19-5 up at half time. Eton Manor asserted themselves in the second half and we lost some shape and concentration, making the eventual result a 38-29 home win, but all in all it was an encouraging outing. Peter Hughes and Dan Kingsley scored another try each (yawn), as did Robert Hughes and Charlie Bourne. Once again, thanks to the wonders of the RFU’s fixture ‘system’, the Second XV are at home today. Ed Wainwright’s men are currently fourth in the BBO1 table, but they have only lost once so far, to leaders Chinnor. Today they entertain second-placed Rams (Redingensians in old money) in what will be a tough game. Rams put 100+ points on their opposition last week, but we beat a strong Oxford Harlequins in a five tries apiece thriller (Alex Bower’s three tries earning him a spot in the 1s squad today). We have what looks like a decent side and the boys are looking forward to the test. It’s good to see Ollie Cato’s name on a Chiltern team sheet again. Mr Phil Featherstone will referee the game. They are not at home today, but I should let you know that the Third XV are also doing very well. First, Doug Smith is getting a team out, which, sadly, many clubs are not doing in this Covid twilight. Last week, we sent a squad of eighteen to The Mount prison to play a game, an effort for which the prison staff were extremely grateful. Secondly, the team is usually winning, and they are definitely in contention at the top of HMMT4 (chances of a league and cup double?). It will be interesting to see just how manic Doug gets if this trend continues. Finally, a reminder about the supporter’s lunches before every home game: make a day of It and have something to keep out the cold as winter comes on!
