Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland, Yesterday evening, I had the privilege of attending the annual Mathex Competition held in the stadium over in Kohimarama. Not the easiest location to get to from West Auckland but, after negotiating the Auckland traffic, we arrived to find literally hundreds of top mathematics students from around Auckland, with their maths teachers & parents, all trying to organise themselves before the start of the event. Mr Devereux is Mr Mathex here at Sunderland, and has been running the teams here for many years. I wish to personally thank him for the energy he brings to this event – looking after eight teams over two nights. Thanks are also due to Ms Ngoh, was also a huge help on the nights, too. The competition involves teams from each school in Auckland – many with two teams just like ours. Three players try to answer tough maths questions, while a runner is taking the answer to a marker to check progress and get the next question. On Wednesday night, both the Year 9 and 10 teams did not win but did incredibly well scoring 90/85 and 90/70 between them.
