AN INVITATION
There are many ways to craft a cultural tour.
At ACE, we are guided by the most remarkable sites, experiences and discoveries; the most sparkling musical performances; or by the highlights of each season. Yet we are rarely more captivated by the tour creation process than when we are able to tell a good story.
Stories not only help us to make decisions about what to include, they provide a sense of momentum and purpose. Whether following in the footsteps of an artist, author or composer, or charting the evolution of a city, stories enable both us – and those who travel with us – to connect with our visits in a more personal and powerful way.
We returned to storytelling for our Advent Rhine Cruise because we realised that the time leading up to the winter solstice and Christmas forms a central narrative within so many traditions: a voyage from darkness towards light, and the realisation that warm, illuminated spaces can only exist in relation to darkness and shadow. We will see this, aided by art historian Marie-Anne Mancio, in the chiaroscuro of the Renaissance masters, amongst the light and shade of Gothic and Romanesque architecture, and at the heart of the region’s famous Christmas markets.
“ACE Cultural Tours are seasoned providers of stimulating and well-thoughtout cultural tours on a wide variety of subjects”
- ACE traveller on tour in 2025
Stories also reach across rigid subject boundaries. By taking light and darkness as our central theme, we can integrate musical illustrations and embodiments of these ideas. Concert pianist and musicologist Emilie Capulet will be joined by celebrated cellist Joseph Spooner to help us discover these details and recreate the enthralling musical atmosphere enjoyed on so many ACE cruises.
And of course literature itself – the craft of storytelling – will run throughout, from Dickens and Narnia to the fairytales and legends associated with the Rhine River. Writer and expert Caroline Hopkinson-Woolley will introduce these narratives and conjure up the ambience of one of Advent’s quintessential genres: the ghost story.
The planning team at ACE is thrilled to have created this magical winter journey, and we very much hope you will join us. Decorative details of a hut at the Koblenz Christmas Market

ROUTE MAP
Our route begins in Cologne, home to the illuminated artistry of Stefan Lochner’s 15th century Madonna of the Rose Bower and the light-filled interiors of the city’s Gothic cathedral, where the Shrine of the Three Kings resides.
Koblenz’s St Castor, Liebfrauenkirche and St Florin are more mysterious, their Romanesque features weaving and directing light through greater areas of shadow.
From here, we plunge into the darkness of German fairytales, travelling through the Rhine Gorge – one of the most beautiful cruising stretches in the country – to reach the enchanting town of Rüdesheim, famed for its excellent coffee, collection of self-playing musical instruments, and array of taverns along its famous Drosselgasse.
We emerge into the clear dawn of the Enlightenment: one of Europe’s oldest universities, Heidelberg is a celebrated centre of learning and literature, and its radiant Great Hall – part of the university buildings in the old town – stands as a testament to centuries of scholarship and discovery.
Throughout our journey, the glow of Germany’s iconic Christmas markets – which emerged as ‘markets of necessity’ to help communities store up against winter –will draw us away from the shadows and towards festive chalets offering hot drinks and festive treats, a physical embodiment of warmth and light during Advent.

OUR VESSEL
We look forward to working once more with our regular cruising partner CroisiEurope – a highly experienced operator who have collaborated with ACE for journeys along the Seine, Danube, Rhône, Vltava and Mekong – on board the wonderful and welcoming MS Lafayette.
The MS Lafayette is a five-anchor vessel, completely refurbished to a four-star hotel standard in 2015 and privately chartered for ACE’s Advent on the Rhine Cruise in 2026.
The ship’s 43 light and spacious ensuite cabins are split across two decks. All the cabins feature large windows, allowing travellers to enjoy the wonderful scenery. On the upper deck, these are full height, floor-to-ceiling, with a french balcony. The ship’s beautiful communal areas are a central feature of our cruise, whether savouring a threecourse meal or relaxing with an evening drink and recital or carol concert in the lounge.
Please note that this is one of ACE’s larger cultural cruises and there will be a maximum of 58–60 participants on board, who will split into smaller groups for the majority of the visits.

OUR ON-BOARD EXPERTS
We are delighted to welcome several expert Tour Directors aboard the MS Lafayette, who will offer illuminating talks on the sites and themes we will explore during the days.
Art historian Marie-Anne Mancio will introduce us to the spectacular art and architecture of Cologne, Koblenz and other centres on our main route; while writer Caroline Hopkinson-Woolley will illuminate the literary and cultural legacy of the Rhine and seasonal genres across the centuries, from German fairytales to the ghost story.
Music is uniquely capable of expressing light and shadow, to convey conflict, explore key characters’ inner workings and juxtapose moods or ideas. Through a series of illustrated talks and recitals, concert pianist Emilie Capulet and cellist Joseph Spooner will explore how composers have played with these themes through texture, key and other techniques – as well as celebrate some of the most delightful music of the season.

MUSIC ON BOARD

ACE Tour Director and concert pianist Emilie Capulet is joined by cellist Joseph Spooner for a series of three intimate recitals aboard the MS Lafayette, exploring the heart of German Romanticism.
Inspired by the legends, fairytales and landscapes of the Rhine Gorge, the programmes will include the passionate first cello sonata by Johannes Brahms, Robert Schumann’s imaginative works for solo piano, the visionary tableaux of Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner, Chopin’s dramatic Ballades, the striking interplay of light and shadow in Beethoven’s variations and the rediscovered works of Emilie Mayer and Hélène Liebmann.
