From the President Leadership

It is hard to imagine that I write this last report for The Mole in my role as President. The with much progress and still more work to be done to pursue and achieve the key strategic priorities of College.

In this time, we have faced on our sector by federal and state governments in the areas of specialist accreditation and expedited IMG pathways, which has led to strong collaboration between specialist colleges to advocate for the profession.

Parallel to this, the Council of Presidents of Medical Colleges (CPMC) is undergoing structural governance reform and changes to its Constitution resulting in a board similar to that in New Zealand, which is felt will strengthen our processes and representation.

As a College we continue to work on our key strategic priorities to address workforce shortage in particular in regional and rural areas, improving member services, evolving our training program and extending beyond our trainees and members.

Dr Haley Bennett and myself have had the opportunity to attend the AGMs of the Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia Faculties and thank you all for your welcome. These meetings

highlighted to me the value of the connection with our Faculties and the incredibly hard working, committed Fellows who continue to advocate for our specialty with the goal of improving dermatology services to our patients. Dr Adrian Lim as President-elect will attend the NSW Faculty AGM shortly and I apologise that our Board Meeting clashed with the Victorian Faculty meeting.

Our Annual General Meeting

Meeting in Brisbane at the end of May are rapidly approaching and this will herald in the new President, Dr Adrian Lim. Dr Lim needs no introduction having contributed to College at many committee levels over many years and I want to thank him for his support, sage advice and counsel.

Dr Eleni Yiasemides will complete her two consecutive terms as Board Director, and her invaluable contributions including serving on both the Audit and Risk Committee and

her commitment to College and we thank Dr Yiasemides for her contributions in these roles.

I have been fortunate to have worked with an incredible Board – including Dr Catherine Drummond as Dean of Education, Prof Kiarash Khosrotehrani, Mr Andrew Herrick and Ms Carden Calder along with Dr Lim and

Dr Yiasemides. The robust discussions, thought provoking contributions and measured functioning board committed to our strategic priorities. I extend my gratitude to them, previous Board Directors including Ms Genevieve Dolan and Mr Philip Hyde, and to many other College Fellows, past Presidents and friends who have provided me with invaluable advice and support. In the coming weeks we will also welcome a new President-elect and Board Director and I encourage any Fellow to consider these roles in the future, which are both challenging and very rewarding. It has been an absolute privilege to work closely with our CEO Dr Haley Bennett and the hard working executive

a dedicated, innovative and inspiring leader and I look forward to seeing the progress College makes under the direction of Dr Lim, the Board and Dr Bennett.

I hope to see you all at the AGM and in Brisbane at the ASM. It has been an honour and privilege to serve as the President of College and I wish Dr Lim the very best for the coming years. I am very College.

From the CEO Leadership

It is with great fondness that we farewell Dr Adriene Lee as College President in May. Dr Lee has served on the Board since 2018 –three years as Dean of Education, two as President-Elect and two as President. It has been an honour to have worked so closely with Dr Lee over the last seven years. She has overseen many changes and challenges, having calmly guided the training program through the pandemic and along with immediate past-President Dr Clare Tait and the Board, the recovery and transition to our new normal. Over the last two years as President, Dr Lee has barely stopped to take a breath, never missing an opportunity to advocate and represent College and the profession for the betterment of Fellows, trainees and patients. Her leadership style is a wonderful mix of intelligence, humility, warmth and diplomacy and her passion and dedication to College is inspiring. I personally am so grateful to have had the opportunity to work alongside her and to have learnt so much. While Adriene certainly deserves a break from College duties, I am ever hopeful that she will be back before long!

Dr Lee’s impressive term on the Board is equalled by our incoming President Dr Adrian Lim, who has also served as Dean of Education (2015-18) prior to returning to the Board in 2023 as President-elect. I very much look forward to working with Dr Lim in his new capacity as President and assisting him to

deliver his vision for College over the next two years.

Looking ahead, there are attention of Fellows involved in training. Firstly, in response to government focus on training site accreditation, the Australian Medical Council was tasked by Health Ministers to develop a set of model cross-college site accreditation standards, the aim of which is to streamline processes for hospitals. The standards have recently been endorsed by the Health Chief Executives Forum, which comprises the Secretaries/ Director Generals of each state and territory health department. It is the expectation that all specialist medical colleges will adopt the new standards, with some allowances

individual requirements.

The new standards comprise four domains – Trainee health and welfare; Supervision, management and support structures; Educational and clinical training opportunities; and Educational resources, facilities and equipment – and align relatively well with ACD’s existing accreditation standards. To assist with the transition, College will work with the AMC over the next year as an ‘early adopter’, developing the templates and tools to support implementation. This is resource-intensive work that will require the focus of the Training Program team and the National Accreditation Committee, and I am

very grateful to everyone involved as we navigate this change. We will communicate with Heads of Department and others impacted well in advance, noting that a timeframe for the new standards to

A second critical piece of work is to better support clinical supervisors. An update of the supervisor training modules is nearing completion and work is underway to develop a framework for supervisor performance to address a remaining AMC accreditation condition. This is particularly important given the new site accreditation standards mentioned above, as it is likely that supervisor ratios will not be permitted and that colleges will be expected to demonstrate quality supervision by other indicators or metrics. All colleges will be attending an upcoming workshop with the AMC to consider as a group what constitutes quality supervision and how this can be

doubt will be an interesting meeting. Finally, please note in your diaries our upcoming Annual General Meeting on 7 May, followed by

commencing 31 May. We have a fabulous program planned and I look forward to seeing many of you in person in beautiful Brisbane – our new Olympic city!

Dr Neville Collins

Dr Neville Collins completed his dermatology training in Melbourne and received his Fellowship in 1984. He practised in outer Eastern Melbourne and Bendigo before moving to Cairns in 1987, where he was the sole dermatologist for many years.

Together with Dr Bert Pruim (Darwin), Dr Rob Miller (Townsville) and Dr Leith Banney (Cairns), they formed “GONAD” - the “group of north Australian dermatologists” – and had several conferences in regional Australia including Port Douglas, Hamilton Island, and Adelaide (kindly hosted by Dr Lachlan Warren).

Dr Collins was a Consultant Dermatologist at Cairns Base Hospital for 15 years where he was involved with registrar training and a whole generation of registrars remember visiting his practice for tutorials.

He and his wife Judy always enjoyed hosting visitors and he was instrumental in organising some fabulous conference events and several College meetings in Cairns. He was always organised with a booking at the best restaurant available!

remembered as a pioneer of our profession. In 2017 he was the recipient of the Mervyn Gold Award for services to regional dermatology.

Dr Collins passed suddenly on 2 December 2024 and will be missed by colleagues, friends and family, as well as the regional dermatology community.

Prof Greg Goodman AM

The ASCD has just celebrated 10 years of service to education and training in cosmetic dermatology. Prof Greg Goodman co-founded the Skin Health Institute (SHI), formerly known as the Skin and Cancer Foundation Inc. in Melbourne, with Dr Michael Rich. Together they subsequently established the ASCD within SHI in late 2013 as a unit. In 2019, with a large membership across Australia and NZ, the ASCD separated and became its own legal entity, Cosmetic Dermatologists Education, Inc, while continuing to trade under the now well-known business name ASCD.

Since its inception 10 years ago, Prof Greg Goodman has been the ASCD’s President and its guiding light. During his tenure, he has been a leader, visionary, and ferociously hard-working president, devoting many hours of personal time to the ASCD’s growth, development and ultimately, success.

I feel it is timely that we celebrate not only the success of ASCD, but most particularly the exceptional contributions Greg Goodman has made. Greg has been successful in drawing to him like-minded dermatologists, cosmetic clinicians, sponsors and others more broadly within the

cosmetic dermatology industry. His vision has created an organisation which is widely recognised as the leader in education and training in cosmetic dermatology. Greg’s reach is not only within Australia and New Zealand, but also extends internationally. For example, at the last symposium in March, 22 overseas speakers contributed to the 2024 symposium.

Greg has inspired many others to join him in the quest to provide high quality cosmetic dermatology education led by dermatologists, who are, owing to their specialist training, the skin experts. He has led the expansion of registrar training to include cosmetic dermatology within the Australasian College
