Marie-José Van Hee architecten: More Home, More Garden
This publication is dedicated to projects by Marie-José Van Hee – from small interventions and furniture to award-winning outdoor spaces. Nine key projects are examined in detail, while various essays and an interview provide a comprehensive overview of her work. Furthermore, three photographers present Van Hee’s architecture from their personal perspectives, while three clients report on their lives and their impressive houses. The publication is rounded off by a small selection of Van Hee’s “black drawings”, affording insight into contextual relationships between architecture and nature, as well as an updated project list.
New, revised edition of the volume published in Belgium in 2019.
Marie-José Van Hee (born in 1950) became a RFABSA Fellow in 2008 and a RIBA International Fellow in 2017. Her work has won numerous awards. She was nominated twice for the European Union Mies van der Rohe Award for contemporary architecture and her work has been the subject of several exhibitions.

Stefano Passamonti: Robaldo Morozzo della Rocca Experimental attitude
Robaldo Morozzo della Rocca (1904–1993) shaped the architectural landscape of Italy – especially Genoa – through changing times. His work is impossible to categorise and, without taking any political stance, expressed itself in a variety of styles between the periods of the monarchy and the republic.
This monograph not only reconstructs the past, but also reveals the present-day relevance of Morozzo della Rocca’s approaches. It demonstrates how it is possible to take an autonomous path and simultaneously develop a universal vision of the world through architecture. Presenting his most important works – ranging from villas and palazzi to apartment buildings and his INA Casa projects – this publication traces the story of an architect who was ahead of his time and whose influence is tangible to this day.
Architekt Krischanitz
Die Schweizer Projekte
The work of Adolf Krischanitz, one of the most important representatives of the Viennese architectural scene in the 1980s and 1990s, which is based on creating something new from existing structures, as well as an inherent, deep-rooted cultural responsibility. This is demonstrated with ten selected projects as well as the not yet published Quai Zurich Campus, the headquarters of the Zurich Insurance Group (2021).
An essay by Hubertus Adam and interviews with Krischanitz, as well as other colleagues, highlight the successful path that Krischanitz has taken in Switzerland and his stance towards the constructed environment. His collaboration with artists such as Helmut Federle and other architects including Herzog & de Meuron is also presented to indicate Krischanitz’s perspective on the Swiss architectural scene and the question of the difference between building in Switzerland and Austria. The Zurich Archive presents the insurance corporation’s historic milestones.

Atelier Scheidegger Keller Workbook
This volume compiles the buildings and projects produced by Atelier Scheidegger Keller since 2009. The collection is not a traditional architectural monograph, but is instead comparable to the logbook of a ship’s voyage: it records all the particulars and actions on the journey. Models, diagrams, codes, texts, maps, plans, sketches, mock-ups, building and detail plans, engineering and workshop drawings, building-site images and photo series all document the process, as well as the spatial, typological and constructive research involved. The result is direct insight into the multifaceted working methods and conceptual world of Atelier Scheidegger Keller.
The four constructed buildings include the highly-acclaimed House with two Columns in Wilen (2014) and the Rosengarten student accommodation in Zurich-Wipkingen (2020), with its raw materialisation and doublestorey halls and loggias.

CHRISTIAN DUPRAZ
114 Renato Maurizio Architekten
Founded in Maloja in 1981, the practice in the Val Bregaglia region designs buildings that are highly usable, with a strong connection to the location and great artisanal precision. The exterior and interior spaces combine with existing and new structures to form an unpretentious, harmonious unity. A prime example of the practice’s work is a solid stone building from 1719 in Montaccio, Bregaglia, that interprets the Alpine building tradition in a respectful, contemporary way.

111 LVPH
Founded in 2003 by Laurent Vuilleumier and Paul Humbert, the practice LVPH (Pampigny/Fribourg) primarily works on projects in Western Switzerland. Its tasks range from an autonomous residential building in Treyvaux supported by 14 columns, to larger projects such as the monolith of a sports hall in Geneva with a colourful anodised, expanded steel façade. All of the practice’s works have a poetic character expressed in reduced, radical architecture.

109 Brandenberger Kloter
A series of residential buildings and four school buildings have been created by Basel architects Oliver Brandenberger and Adrian Kloter since 2011. They are all characterised by a virtuoso interplay of raw and finely crafted materials. The renovations are also characterised by a subtle merging of old and new. The most recent examples are the kindergarten and the school in Birrwil: here, concrete and wood were combined seemingly without hesitation, resulting in a harmonious, poetic expression.

Founded in 1999 by Damien Chevalley, Patrick Longchamp and Gilbert Russbach, CLR architectes have constructed a wide range of schools, administrative buildings and housing. Always in search of new typological solutions, the Geneva-based practice is characterised by regular competition participation and the reinterpretation of historical models, as exemplified by the Ecole du Petit-Lancy – a user-orientated extension to existing structures that enhances its urban environment.

107 Frei Architekten
Buildings by the Aarau-based practice Frei Architekten AG, which was founded in 1988 by the brothers Peter and Christian Frei, do without extravagant designs and use a reduced range of materials to achieve a powerful building presence. For instance the replacement building in Zurich’s Engelstrasse is subtly integrated into the historical row of houses. The wooden façade of the new storage depot for the Weinkellerei Aarau reflects the activities inside, while also adapting to the industrial character of its surroundings.

105 Sollberger Bögli
For each building presented in the volume, Biel architects
Ivo Sollberger and Lukas Bögli describe a central idea that aptly symbolises the project, referring to the buildings themselves, which carry a narrative force within them. The rows of seats at the new Stade de la Tuilière in Lausanne, for example, are housed in a mighty gestural shell. And the structure of the Raiffeisenbank in Sonceboz-Sombeval appears as an impressive, dynamically-structured crystalline sculpture.

Darlington Meier Architekten operate confidently on a variety of scales – from housing to urban-planning interventions. The Zurich office’s sense of the effect of classic concepts characterises its designs, as do its harmonious use of materials and the goal of creating locations with a specific identity. Their design for the Mathilde Escher Home for disabled adults in Zurich is an example of confident urban-planning placement that is equally able to ensure an agreeable residential atmosphere.

Contemporary architects and their buildings
PETER ZIRKEL – Dresden
34 Peter Zirkel – Dresden
In search of a cultural identity, the Dresden-based architect Peter Zirkel has produced materially aware buildings dedicated to a poetic realism since 1995. For example the church in Canitz (2022) is built upon the ruins of its 13th-century predecessor using a sophisticated wooden structure. The Museum Lützen 1632 (2024) exhibits a mass grave that was excavated in 2011. representing a silent place of remembrance, while also fulfilling the demands of a modern place of knowledge and cultural education.

Work reports on young architects
KUNIK DE MORSIER
55 Kunik de Morsier
Founded in 2010 in Lausanne, the practice of Valentin Kunik and Guillaume de Morsier is shaped by its context-related projects, which are often implemented in experimental collaboration with engineers, photographers, philosophers and scenographers. The resulting spaces interact with their environment. For example, the Le Pont residential building is completely made of wood and based on an innovative construction system.

54 Soppelsa
Soppelsa Architekten focuses on the relationship between spaces – their qualities, materialisation, proportions and light guidance – and the project programme. Already in the early years after founding their office in 2012, the brothers Mario and Nino Soppelsa managed to apply that approach in a number of competition successes. In 2015, the semi-detached house in Esslingen was their first constructed project. However, their work is not limited to housing and also includes successful projects on all scales: their Hagmannareal Winterthur-Seen residential estate has won several awards, while their Oberrüti double sports hall was included in the list of Best Architects 2023.

53 SAAS
After studying human medicine, Guillaume Yersin earned a Master’s degree in architecture at ETH Zurich. In 2012, he founded his own office, SAAS, in Geneva and has since realised several smaller, exquisite buildings that bear witness to an exceptional sense of construction: for example, an observation platform over the Rhone in Bernex, which –constructed in wood – pointedly expresses architectural themes such as supporting, bearing and joining.

52 Kollektiv Marudo
The spectrum of the young Baden-based office Kollektiv Marudo ranges from conversion and renovation projects to large housing estates. Its founders Alexander Athanas, Ole Bühlmann and Rafael Zulauf strive to achieve sustainable architecture through the integral observation of each building task, while its innovative character never contradicts tried and trusted approaches. Instead, their architecture unfolds between the coordinates of flexibility, local and use-related specifics, and innovation, representing consistent further developments of existing qualities. One such example is the new Brühl school in Solothurn (2022).

50 Baumgartner Loewe
Since 2010, Marcel Baumgartner has worked in his Zurich office on projects with a wide range of tasks and scales, including prolific competition participation. In 2020, Claudia Loewe joined him, co-founding the company Baumgartner Loewe Architekten in 2022. Their design stance is characterised by committed engagement with current building tasks and respect for existing architectural structures. For example, in the case of the extension to Röhrliberg School in Cham, they ensured an impressive, harmonious synthesis of old and new elements.

51 Stefan Wülser +
For Zurich architect Stefan Wülser, architecture is not reduced to the craft of designing and implementing the design, but also involves thinking about its socio-cultural significance in contemporary society. With the house in Bassersdorf, for example, he developed a programmatic building that rises above an existing supporting structure in a direct, bricollage-like construction that is gestural and expressive.

49 Javier Müller
The Spanish architect Javier Müller has managed his office in Geneva since 2017. His striving for radical reduction is manifested in timeless architecture that fully exploits its social potential. Subtle measures and the economic application of means creates uncontrived architecture in which the form entirely serves the function and its users’ quality of life. One example of such abstraction through rationalisation is the conversion of Duplex B in Bernex. Liberated from all unnecessary elements, this timeless architecture is exclusively defined by geometry, light and spatial proportions.

TWO LAKES
Two Lakes
Lake Lucerne
and
Lake Biwa:
A Comparative Study on the Culture of Water
The publication Two Lakes is the result of a comparative study of two cultural regions – Lake Lucerne in Switzerland and Lake Biwa in Japan. Based on the results of a five-year cooperation entitled The Culture of Water (2018–2023) between the Lucerne School of Engineering and Architecture and the Kyoto Institute of Technology, it engages with the architecture of the future. Addressing the core themes of danger, beauty, commons and eternity – and their according relationships to water – it develops hypotheses on both regions with respect to the interdependence between people and the architecture they produce. The book is rounded off by in-depth articles, two photographic essays and archive documents. This publication is a special edition in the Laboratorium series.

Stephen Bates: Tent poles in the ground
Tent poles in the ground is a collection of twenty-one texts by Stephen Bates. Like Papers (2001), Papers 2 (2007) and Papers 3 (2016), which were written in collaboration with Jonathan Sergison, co-founder of Sergison Bates architects, Tent poles testifies to the importance of writing as part of a form of practice that includes building and teaching. The reflections included are part of the process of developing and testing ideas in Sergison Bates’s London studio and in Stephen Bates’s teaching studio at the Chair of Urbanism and Housing, TU München. Covering a range of themes, from domesticity to the city, landscape and the design process, they record both the fundamental principles that inform his approach to architecture and the shifts in thinking that have come about in thirty years of practice.
While these are personal reflections on buildings and spaces, they were inspired by discussions across the table in the London studio, with teaching colleagues and students in Munich, and meetings with interesting people from different creative disciplines. Like the making of buildings, thinking and writing about them, too, is always the result of a process of collaboration.

Five Good Swiss Plans
Apartment floor plans profoundly influence our daily lives. In the last 30 years, flexible floor plans with undesignated uses have gradually established themselves as an ideal in Swiss residential architecture.
An in-depth study initiated by two Australian universities investigated this highly relevant architectural theme, demonstrating how contemporary housing floor plans can be adapted to changing requirements over the years. Key aspects include taking into account that an apartment’s residents are no longer pre-defined (thereby moving on from the traditional nuclear family), as well as the questions of how spatial qualities and the positions of doors either enable or prevent specific lifestyles.
In this volume, five Swiss architects present “good plans” designed by their practices, using short texts and images:
– Elli Mosayebi (EMI Architekten)
– Jeannette Kuo (Karamuk Kuo Architects)
– Maria Conen (Conen Sigl Architekt:innen)
– Thomas Padmanabhan (Lütjens Padmanabhan Architekten)
– Philipp Esch (Esch Sintzel Architekten)
The book is supplemented with essays by Irina Davidovici (ETH Zurich), Jonathan Sergison (USI Mendrisio), Alan Pert (University of Melbourne) and the editors Kate Finning (University of Melbourne) and Guillermo Fernández-Abascal (University of Sydney).

The House That Kahn Built
The National Assembly Building in Dhaka by Louis Kahn
Photographed by Kashef Chowdhury
Working from his Urbana practice in Bangladesh, Kashef Chowdhury designs architecture that is rooted in the history and nature of its location –whereby the latter also relates to a spiritual and cultural level. This explains his fascination for Kahn’s parliamentary building in Dhaka, which inspired this volume of photo essays.
Kahn’s design is characterised by an innovative architectural language that combines western and eastern traditions, forms and materials. For instance, in view of the great importance of water in Bengali tradition, he placed the building complex by an artificial lake. Furthermore, although it is defined by strict geometrical forms, the parliamentary building reflects the transcendental nature of the National Assembly, defining the hopeful founding years of the independent state of Bangladesh.

Kora Bürgi: Der architektonische Einfluss von Frank Lloyd Wright
in der Zentralschweiz
Building on her experience following a several-week trip to Taliesin West, Kora Bürgi investigates Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture and traces his work in the USA and Switzerland. The result of the field research is a presentation of his influence on the Central Swiss architectural landscape – a theme that has not been studied before. That influence ranges from partial copies of elements of Wright’s architecture to own interpretations of his architectural ideas.
This publication analyses 14 buildings in Central Switzerland – from the Heimbach school and the Villa Schnyder (both in Lucerne) to the residential buildings in Brodhubel (Canton of Obwalden) – including Wright’s influence on various architects, such as Josef Gasser, Lisbeth Sachs and Otto von Deschwanden. The author also sheds light on the distribution of Wright’s urban-planning principles and the future of his architecture in Switzerland.

Rising Oceans & Spaces That Care
Complexities and ideas behind the Friendship Hospital by Kashef Chowdhury / URBANA in Bangladesh
In times of global crises, architecture must also seek new sustainable approaches to climatic and social challenges. Designed by Kashef Chowdhury / URBANA, the Friendship Hospital in southern Bangladesh can be regarded as pioneering in this respect. The hospital, which was awarded the 2022 RIBA International Prize, provides life-saving healthcare, as well as enhancing the identity of a coastal region that has been devastated by cyclones and soil salinisation as a result of rising sea levels. A profound architectural stance developed out of the geography and history of the local context makes this work globally relevant. This book, which includes a photo essay by Hélène Binet, presents plans, diagrams and model photos that offer insight into the design and construction process in one of the world’s most climate-affected regions.
Kashef Chowdhury, The Consciousness of Place
In his office Urbana, Bangladesh, Kashef Chowdhury designs architecture that is rooted in the history and nature of the location. All of his projects have the common feature that they are based on comprehensive research work, aimed at applying an awareness of a specific location and its nature to achieve a high degree of innovation and original expression. The Consciousness of Place is Chowdhury’s philosophical engagement with his own understanding of architecture. It focuses on the significance of architecture, which is able to connect us to nature and liberate us from hectic urban life. This publication is a manifesto of a form of architecture that harmonises with the respective location, reflecting the identity of its culture and people.
Chowdhury’s constructed works have attracted international attention and have been awarded prizes such as the 2022 RIBA International Prize.

Anna Maria Kupper – Journale 0–13
In 14 journals, the Lucerne sculptor Anna Maria Kupper presents a documentation of her work since 1970 using photographs and reproduced drawings and sketches. In the form of a loose report, the “Tour d’Horizon” describes all her pieces produced in various phases between 1970 and 2017, beginning with her very first contributions to international sculpture symposia. They are impressive works of sculpture in polyester, papier mâché, plaster, sheet iron, stone, adhesive-bonded sand and wood. Often they are spontaneously, playfully abstracted figures or portraits. Later, the artist’s work transformed into geometrical panel paintings on wood with gold plating and colour framing. Drawings and sketches accompany the sculptural works through all their creative cycles. Initially, they are prefigurative studies on sculptural pieces, while later, the drawings increasingly become autonomous artistic pieces with their own expression, always created spontaneously, with confident strokes, leading to large images. Each of the numerous drawings reflects the artist’s joy and passion in creating visual art. In this way, Anna Maria Kupper delves deep into the world of observation. Each of the 14 volumes includes one or more articles by authors who engage with and describe the artist’s work from a specific perspective.
To mark the 20 th anniversary of Quart, this edition is published in the form of journals by the sculptor Anna Maria Kupper, who founded the publishing house together with Heinz Wirz in 1999.
