The Debate Chamber, Oxford Union Located in Frewin Court, the Oxford Union is one of the oldest debating societies and almost certainly the most famous. Founded in 1823, it has been independent of the University ever since. The Debate Chamber hosts high class debating during the traditional Thursday debate, and regularly includes prestigious guest speakers.

May Morning The traditional May Morning celebrations begin at 6am, with Magdalen College Choir singing a hymn from the top of Madgalen Tower. At one time it was popular to celebrate by jumping from Madgalen Bridge once the choir had finished singing.

Originally from Belgium, Douglas Vernimmen gained his PhD at the University of Liège before coming to Oxford to continue his studies. He developed an early interest in photography, and his work has been widely exhibited by many salons of photography in more than 50 countries, from Asia to the USA. He is the recipient of numerous international awards and several distinctions for his international contribution to photography. A dozen of the works included in this book have received awards in prestigious international photography contests. Douglas is currently a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh.
