The sizes of all the works are expressed in centimetres. All the works are, unless otherwise specified, single-print etchings on paper, some of them put on canvas and some of them painted or heightened in acrylic paint. Most of the etchings were printed by Roger Van Akelijen’s Panter Print etching studio. All drawings illustrated with a 29 20,5 format are in gouache and mixed media.

Writing about Fred Bervoets’ work is frustrating, like trying to evoke a particularly fine culinary experience or recount a gripping film. Already while searching for the right words, you sense that they will be inadequate. It sounds a cliché, but it touches the core of the problem. Bervoets’ works seem to tell all there is to tell, not only through the stories and motifs, but at least as much through the form in which the artist has cast them. For this reason, putting words to Bervoets’ plastic intensity seems totally unnecessary. Of course, the writer has various tricks up his sleeve with which to squeeze Bervoets’ iconoclasm into verbal form. You can outline the evolution of his work and link it to the artistic Zeitgeist. You can recount how his work has been and continues to be presented and appreciated in exhibitions and publications. You can compare Bervoets’ method with that of historical or contemporary artists. You can talk extensively with Bervoets and paraphrase his words. Supposedly someone once tried to summarize his work in 26 short statements. Situating, contextualizing, analysing, paraphrasing, summarizing... since 1992, I have applied each of these methods, with varying success.
Plan B And yet — and perhaps precisely for this reason — a sense of verbal helplessness creeps over me at the sight of the fathomlessly rich plasticity that Bervoets continues to exhibit even today. Overcome by methodological despondency, the author is in real danger of resorting to poetic outpourings, romantic clichés or loaded metaphors borrowed from nature such as volcano, hurricane and primal power, and in so doing laying bare his own terminological bankruptcy. To avoid these pitfalls, I set out recently, in high spirits, to Bervoets’ studio intending to have him speak for himself. My contribution to this publication would consist of a dialogue with the master. Anyone who knows him is aware that Bervoets is particularly eloquent and is able, like none other, to put words to his work. Catchy intensity, contagious enthusiasm, genuine surprise and amusing self-deprecation go constantly hand in hand. Fred Bervoets is a master storyteller, as is evident not only in his visual work. When Bervoets narrates, he puts his whole self into it, just as when he is etching, sketching or painting. And, as in his visual work, form and content are inseparable.

During the day, painter and graphic artist Fred Bervoets (1942) works almost routinely at his large format etchings. At night, he lets his imagination run wild. The hundreds of drawings, sketches, doodles and paintings done ‘in the margin’ today fill almost the entire ground floor of his studio home. The one thing they have in common, apart from their maker, is their modest A4 format. The spontaneous gestuality of these small works on paper forms the heart of this book, which also includes Bervoets’ more monumental etchings since 2013. This one-of-its kind ‘print room’ offers an impressive kaleidoscopic self-portrait of an absolutely unique artist.
