INTRODUCTION

This is a guide to the Barcelona that almost no one knows. It takes you off the beaten track to discover the city’s hidden gardens, littleknown museums and best tapas bars. This book was written with the ambition to escape the tourist-saturated areas and get the total Barcelona experience. So while there is room for Camp Nou, Barça’s famous soccer arena in the Les Corts district, you’ll also find 5 other reasons to visit this district. We’d like to think that this book suggests exciting ways to spend your Saturday night, as well as guide you towards the best brunch places and beautiful parks to enjoy the day after. To top it off, we added plenty of wild cards, like 5 urban legends and why you shouldn’t be shy about glancing into people’s porter’s lodges.

The 500 Hidden Secrets of Barcelona doesn’t mention everything there is to see. There are already enough guide books and websites that cover the familiar sights. This is rather an intimate guide to the places the author would recommend to a friend who wants to discover the real Barcelona.

HOW TO USE THIS BOOK?

This book lists 500 things you need to know about Barcelona in 100 different categories. Most of these are places to visit, with practical information like the address and sometimes the opening hours. Others are bits of information that help you get to know the city and its habitants. The purpose of this guide is to inspire you to explore the city, but it does not cover every aspect from A to Z.

The places listed in the guide are given an address (in which ‘C/’ is short for ‘Carrer’), including the district, and a number. The district and number allow you to find the locations on the maps at the beginning of the book: first look for the map of the corresponding district, then look for the right number. A word of caution however: these maps are not detailed enough to allow you to locate specific places in the city. They are included to give you a sense of where things are, and whether they are close by other places of interest. You can obtain an excellent map in most hotels and at the Barcelona Tourist Information office, Plaça de Catalunya 17. Or the addresses can be located on a smartphone.

Please also bear in mind that cities change all the time. The chef who hits a high note one day, may be uninspiring on the day you happen to visit. The hotel ecstatically reviewed in this book might suddenly go downhill under a new manager. The bar considered one of the 5 coolest music clubs might be empty on the night you visit. This is obviously a highly personal selection. You might not always agree with it. A good seafood restaurant, but the reason to come here is the view: it’s high up on Montjuïc and overlooks large parts of the city, the harbour and the sea. An ideal place for a romantic evening.

Overlooking the beach without being overpriced because of it, the restaurant on the ground floor of the CNAB gym serves a great lunch with a focus on fish (12 euro at the time of writing). It’s right by one of the city’s most popular beaches and within walking distance from several landmarks.

The tower where you can get a cable car up to Montjuïc also houses a restaurant with a spectacular view of the city, its seaside, and Montjuïc. The restaurant, headed by chef Albert Dolcet, serves a highly refined local cuisine. If you’re spending New Year’s Eve in Barcelona, this is the place to be.

This pretty swanky restaurant is part of the Barceló Raval Hotel and boasts a 360-degree terrace. The food is fine, decently priced and you get a wonderful view of one of Barcelona’s busiest, most colourful neighbourhoods.

If you take the Tramvia Blau up Tibidabo hill, this restaurant is where the streetcar will drop you off. The restaurant faces the sea, which makes for a view (the city, Sagrada Família, the sea, Montjuïc...) that never gets dull. Mainly tapas, with a slightly adventurous touch.

Freshly ground beans, straightforward advice and (if you can’t wait until you get home) a coffee to go, made by a fine barista: El Magnifico is the real deal in coffee expertise. Prefer tea? They sell that too. The large cookies they keep enticingly close to the counter are a must.

The espresso machine here has had the plastic case removed, so you can see its insides. It’s a wink at the customers: Satan’s Coffee Corner is about the content, not about the bow people can put around things. Lunch and breakfast suggestions are carefully rhymed with coffee types. Also sells an interesting collection of magazines.

Caelum Bakery sells pastries and cookies made by monks and nuns in Catalonian monasteries, and the adjoining coffee shop adds caffeine to that (already very convincing) offer. If you haven’t reached heaven (caelum) by then, you can choose one of various liqueurs. Pick up a jar of artisan jam on the way out.

Mesón del Café goes for a laidback approach. The interior basically hasn’t been touched since 1909 and the coffee machine is supposed to be the oldest in town. It looks surprisingly like a German beer bar, but if you can get over the culture shock, you’ll notice they do make a wicked cup of coffee.

If you’re visiting Gràcia, under no circumstance miss the opportunity to boost your caffeine intake at Syra Coffee. Excellent coffee, in traditional formats –no Starbucks eccentricities here. Have a dulce de leche cookie to go with your coffee and pick up a copy of Syrazine, Syra Coffee’s bi-monthly fanzine with coffee facts and illustrations by local artists.

Elisabet Vallecillo and Javier Blanco, the duo behind Colmillo de Morsa, do everything themselves: they create, make and sell. Both their clothes and their shop ooze a classy, elegant starkness. Colmillo de Morsa (it means ‘walrus tusk’) values sustainability and local production. The shop also sells clothes by other local designers. Everything is handmade and therefore unique by definition.

Founded in 1843, Santa Eulalia is a Barcelona classic. Whereas many brands these days don’t even have a website, Santa Eulalia has its own Wiki page. There’s more to Catholic Barcelona than the Sagrada Família or Santa Maria del Mar. This chapel, for instance: dedicated to the Virgin Mary but named after Bernat Marcús, the Greek-Catalan banker who paid for its construction back in the 12th century. It’s one of the oldest catholic buildings in town, with a crypt where religious services were held.

This Benedictine monastery was built in the 10th century outside the city walls. It came under attack and was destroyed multiple times, yet it’s one of the bestpreserved Romanesque buildings in town. It’s an oasis of otherworldly calm, amid the buzz of El Raval neighbourhood – as if it maintained some of its original, rural charm.

A 14th-century Gothic church, the Santa Maria del Pi (Blessed Lady of the Pine Tree, one of the titles of the Virgin Mary) is most notable for its large rose window. Also note the octagonal bell tower and the beautiful alabaster altar.

You know this church, even if you don’t realise it: it’s the fairytale-like presence on top of Tibidabo Hill (next to the amusement park), shrouded in golden light at night. You saw it from the plane, right before it landed on El Prat. It looks impressively huge on the outside but inside it’s mainly details that grab the attention. There’s an elevator to the roof, from which point you get a great view of the city.

This is a church, a convent and a chapel, in neo-Romanic style with modernist elements. The outside is worth a closer look, but the interior won’t excite many visitors. The highlight is the painting of the Blessed Petra de San José, by Isabel Guerra, in Spain well-known as ‘the painting nun’.
