WHAT'S THE SCOOP?

Hey DiG Fam! Spring has officially sprung and Gwinnett is looking downright green and gorgeous. Time to trade winter hibernation for sunny strolls, flower-sniffing and brunch on a deck that smells like fresh blooms. Can you hear it? The birds singing, the bees buzzing and your backyard calling your name.

For brunch that is basically a garden party on a plate, don’t miss Taste Test (pg. 8) featuring the Bloom Room in Suwanee. Sunlight streaming through windows, fresh flowers everywhere and dishes that are basically edible bouquets. Sip, nibble and soak up the spring vibes. You might never want to leave.

Next, let’s get our hands dirty for a good cause with Diggin’ For Good (pg. 14) featuring Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful. These folks are all about green thumbs and community love. Whether it is sprucing up a park, planting a community garden or just making our streets look extra fresh, they have it covered. Spring is the perfect excuse to roll up your sleeves, grab a trowel and dig in. Bonus points if you leave smelling like dirt and sunshine.

We’re also shining the Norcross Spotlight (pg. 16) on one of Gwinnett’s greenest, most sustainable cities. Parks, art installations, spring festivals and outdoor eats? Yes, yes and yes. Take a walk, grab a bite and don’t forget to check out the interactive feature where you can imagine your dream garden right in the heart of the city. We dare you not to get inspired.

If you fancy a shopping spree, our Small Biz Spotlight (pg. 24) on Good Things Home & Garden in Norcross is a must. Trust us, this place is like a treasure chest for your inner gardener. Think colorful planters that scream “plant me!”, artisan décor that is almost too pretty to touch and plants so fresh they practically wave hello. Pop in, get some tips and leave with your hands full and your heart happy.

Finally, our 5 Within 50 (pg. 30) feature sprinkles a little wanderlust into your spring. Five incredible gardens around the county, perfect for strolls, photos or stealing ideas for your own backyard paradise. Pack a picnic, lace up your walking shoes and let the blooms show you a good time.

So grab your sunnies, your hat and maybe a watering can. You are about to make the most of spring in Gwinnett. Share your green adventures with #DigGwinnett and #WeDigIt and follow along on Instagram, TikTok and Facebook @diggwinnett. Let’s make this season bloom together.

EATS GRAB & GO: REFUGE COFFEE IN NORCROSS

Coffee is that one beverage that has stood the test of time. Whether you like it hot and black on a cold winter day or sugary and dolloped with whipped cream on a summer's eve, it’s evergreen. This spring, however, local coffee tastes even sweeter than usual.

2026 is the year of loving our neighbors, being sweet and showing love to small businesses, so we’re shopping locally this spring. During this season of growth, expand your palate past $9 caramel macchiatos and visit the multifaceted coffee shop that does it all – Refuge Coffee Co. in Norcross. This shop offers patrons tasty pastries, smooth espresso and specialty drinks, but they also dedicate themselves to serving each and every member of their community past the realm of caffeine delights.

Refuge Coffee Co.’s mission is to serve tasty, quality products, provide a welcoming and inviting service to all and aid refugees and immigrants in programs like job training and education. Refuge Coffee Co. prides itself on providing people from all walks of life with “a place to dream and a place to breathe.” Cozy, relaxed and endlessly accommodating, Refuge keeps you comfortable while serving patrons with the utmost respect.

But what does it mean to serve the global community? It’s more than serving people good coffee; it's a matter of philosophy, both in business practices and in the way they define their community. There is no singling out, no isolation; this company is an amalgamation of cultures and backgrounds that have come together to support each other in every way possible. This world has become increasingly frightening for refugees and immigrants, so in reaching out, in creating a fun, multi-ethnic safe space, and providing endless opportunities and support, Refuge Coffee Co. lives fully up to its name as a place of welcome and safety.

The core goals of Refuge Coffee Co. are simple to adopt as your own: be generous, relational, dependable, restful and humble. To connect with your community, Refuge believes, is to be kind and welcoming to all. A simple but important mission we should all share (which you can, by donating to the link on their website). Supporting this coffee shop helps your community, so be sure to shop local this season and keep your neighbors in mind. Visit one of the three locations closest to you to take part in Refuge Coffee Co.’s philanthropic mission. The impact of your dollar is greater than you might think.

P.S. Their Clarkston location was recently used as a filming spot for Regretting You!

TASTE TEST: BLOOM ROOM SOCIAL

If you haven’t heard the news, a delicious brunch spot called Bloom Room Social has recently opened its doors in Suwanee! This trendy restaurant has a vibrant ambiance, tasty cocktails and an incredible food menu. I stopped by with some of my girlfriends to enjoy a weekend brunch and let me tell you, it was the perfect place to catch up and debrief!

Every exceptional brunch spot must have a menu of cocktails and Bloom Room Social doesn’t disappoint! From a layered Lavender Collins to a fruity Passionfruit Margarita, there are so many options to choose from. We decided to go all out with their $30 bottomless mimosas special, which was the perfect vibe.

For entrees, we each chose something a bit different to get a taste of everything they have to offer! I went with The Thickness, a breakfast sandwich featuring bacon, eggs to order and cheddar cheese which is served on sourdough bread with a side of breakfast potatoes. I’m a sucker for a breakfast sammy and this one didn’t disappoint! My friend decided to take things on the sweet side with their Flight of Waffles. This decadent dish features three sugared waffles flavored as banana fosters, wild berry and butter pecan. If you have a sweet tooth during brunch time, you need to try this plate!

The next time brunch plans actually make it out of the group chat, make sure to stop by Bloom Room Social. Everything from the atmosphere, food and speciality drinks will have you coming back again and again.

IN SEASON: VEGETARIAN DISHES

Vegetarian dishes and mock meats, wholesome soups and fabulous fiber, welcome to the spring where we’re eating green! It’s that time of the year when your mental health tells your gut health that you need a double dose of high fructose corn syrup right now but what you really need is a good cruciferous veggie. I’m here to be the angel on your shoulder, to show you delicious vegetarian recipes that not only taste fantastic but make you feel great too! Now is the time to shop seasonally and discover what veggies best suit your spring diet!

Adding a couple of vegetarian dishes to your week can have an immensely positive impact on your health, so here are a few of my very own favorite dishes that help me stay happy, healthy, clean and green throughout the spring season!

If you are a meat-and-potatoes kind of individual, then I have just the dish for you. You’ve heard of portobello mushroom steaks by now, but have you ever tried one? Savory, juicy, with just a bit of char but light in a way that a ribeye never is, portobello mushrooms absorb flavor like a dream.I prefer to go all the way and prepare my mushroom steaks in a marinade, then grill and serve them with a side of creamy roasted garlic mashed potatoes and some pan-fried broccoli. Impressive, flavorful and easy, it fills you up and it pairs really well with a nice glass of cabernet. This is a dish perfect for date night!

Or, you could skip date night and go right into Marry Me Beans! This dish is a favorite of mine and has received rave reviews from many tummies in my area. Sun-dried tomatoes, caramelized onions, garlic, butter and basil - what’s not to love? Adding cannellini beans to the mix only makes this dish better, giving you the boost of protein and fiber you need to get through the day. I like to serve this meal with crispy garlic bread on the side for dipping and if you have any leftovers in the morning (you probably won’t), try heating the Marry Me Beans in a pan and crack a few eggs in there for a flavorful and creamy shakshouka!

Overall, the most important aspect of vegetarian cooking is to find produce that is in season. The fruits and veggies always taste and look better when they’re ripe, so be sure to do your research to find out what produce you can buy this spring to start your own list of vegetarian recipes. From quinoa taco bowls to green bean frittatas, lentil soups, chickpea burgers, black bean enchiladas, cauliflower fried rice and so many more inspired dishes, the list of vegetarian meals is long and endlessly delicious. Join me in escaping the ground beef and bacon rut, and cook your own veggie-rich dishes that are chock full of the things you need to lead a happy and healthy life today!

TIPSY: FLORAL COCKTAIL INFUSIONS

Wake up and smell the roses or drink them! Whatever you prefer, the esteemed boozehounds at The DiG have some tipsy tips on how to spruce up your cocktails this spring with a number of floral infusions and inspired recipes.

Much like steeping tea, infusing spirits is low commitment and high reward. All you have to do to create the perfect floral infusion is add fresh or dried flowers and the spirit of your choosing to a sealed jar, leave it in the dark for a few hours (if the flowers are fresh) to a few days (if dried) and shake the jar about once or twice per day.

Supplies:

• A large glass jar

• A cheesecloth or fine mesh sieve

• An empty bottle to store your flowery spirit

Once you achieve the flavor you like, strain the liquid and enjoy your infusion neat or add it to any cocktail recipe to put a springtime spin on your favorite sip! Here are a few delectable drinks to get you started!

Rose Gin in a French 75

DiGGIN' FOR GOOD: SUSTAINABILITY MADE EASY

No more messing around! Going green is a necessity this year. With fossil fuel emissions and deforestation on the rise, our individual efforts to improve the earth are more important than ever! This is our planet and we should care for it as such, so this spring, we’re recycling, composting, thrifting and donating. Most of all, we’re following the easy sustainability tips provided by local nonprofits like Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful.

Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful encourages you to get involved with your community and save the planet one recycling bin at a time. Here are some small tips on going green that you can add to any routine:

1. Swap from plastic to reusable water bottles or start composting food scraps to lessen your non-recyclable waste significantly.

2. Use LED bulbs in your house to help with energy efficiency and take shorter showers to save water.

3. Bring sustainability with you to work by starting a recycling initiative among your coworkers or buy a few plants to purify the air in the office. There are plenty of ways to make big differences with the smallest of acts!

Now that your personal and professional lives are as green as can be, it's time to extend a green thumb to your community. When visiting locally owned shops, bring a reusable bag with you. Take part in a community garden (or start your own). Volunteer at one of Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful’s events, like the Great American Cleanup or the Adopt-a-Road initiative.

There are plenty of communities leading the charge on repairing and cultivating a cleaner earth and Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful is one of them. Their only goal is to share insights on how to live more sustainably and to provide the people of Gwinnett County with a clean and enduring environment. Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful engages tirelessly in efforts to create a sustainable county through community engagement, education and volunteer programs, so sign on today and take part in saving your planet!

CITY SPOTLIGHT: NORCROSS

As one of Gwinnett’s greenest and most sustainable cities, Norcross is in full bloom this spring. The city is accredited as a Tree City USA and certified as a Platinum Green City, and it’s home to Gwinnett’s first arboretum in Pinnacle Park, making it a must-visit for plant lovers and outdoor explorers. From sun-drenched strolls to outdoor brunches, it’s the perfect place to soak up spring in style.

EATS

Norcross’s dining scene is as fresh and vibrant as its parks. The Crossing Steak House, in a historic train depot, pairs bold flavors and hearty portions with outdoor patio seating, supporting local sourcing when possible. Over at Bleu House Café, tender brisket, savory pulled pork and homemade desserts come with mural-adorned charm and al fresco dining, perfect for enjoying sunshine responsibly.

ARTS

Art in Norcross grows alongside its green initiatives. This Free Little Art Gallery (FLAG), built and stocked by Norcross Public Arts Commissions, turns unused space into a sustainable showcase of creativity. The playful Bench Frog and Painter Frog, crafted in copper by Beau Smith with proceeds from the Norcross Art Splash Festival, highlight the city’s eco-friendly spirit through funding and outdoor installations. Every sculpture and gallery piece blends creativity with green living, encouraging residents and visitors to explore art in harmony with nature.

EVENTS

Spring in Norcross means getting outside and giving back. Pedal Norcross invites the whole family to enjoy a 2.8-mile ride through Historic Norcross, celebrating outdoor activity and community connection. For hands-on impact, Neighborhood Cleanup & Recycling Day helps residents safely drop off recyclables, electronics and scrap metal. Both events promote eco-friendly practices and support the city’s sustainability initiatives, making it easy and fun for everyone to enjoy the outdoors while contributing to a greener, cleaner community.

COLOR YOUR OWN GARDEN

Norcross is home to many wonderful green spaces. Give these garden scenes your own creative touch by filling them in with your favorite colorful fruits and veggies, and don't forget to show off your creation by posting and tagging us at @diggwinnett!

DiG-WORTHY DISCOVERIES: THESE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS: SPRINGTIME EDITION

Raindrops on roses and… Springtime calls for sprucing up your yard, refilling your front porch pots and getting that summer garden started. Pick up your seasonal color while also supporting budding horticulturalists (see what we did there?) at Gwinnett Technical College’s Spring Plant Sale. The sale includes well-priced annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables, trees, shrubs, houseplants and native plants. Plants are propagated and grown by Gwinnett Tech students in the spring semester’s greenhouse management class and all proceeds go to the GTC horticulture department.

April 21-23, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Gwinnett Technical College greenhouse, near Building H (5150 Sugarloaf Parkway, Lawrenceville)

…Light comfy chairs

Time to get back outside however you can. Whether your travels take you to a campsite or a sandy beach, your backyard fishing pond or an all-weekend soccer tournament, stay comfortable in the Nemo MoonLite Reclining Camp Chair. This easy-to-assemble chair is one of the few travel chairs we’ve seen with adjustable reclining support. And since it was designed for camping, it weighs a whopping two pounds and packs down to roughly the size of a water bottle.

Nemo MoonLite Reclining Camp Chair - $160 High Country Outfitters (5145 Peachtree Parkway, Peachtree Corners)

Bright copper cans and…

Do you need a brand-new fancy-schmancy watering can? Probably not. Would your janky old plastic one continue to get the job done sufficiently? Most likely. But would the chore of watering plants be made ever so much more delightful whilst using a beautiful new copper watering can that matches the moscow mule cup that you’re sipping out of? Absolutely.

Brushed Copper Two Gallon Watering Can - $68 Outdoor Environments (68 Zion Church Road, Braselton)

…Bird feeder stares

Want to feel outdoorsy without getting outdoorsy? Acrylic window bird feeders suction cup to the window of your choice, allowing you to get up-close-and-personal with the birds without actually getting up and going outside. Imagine having your breakfast while the birds have theirs – you’ll basically be a Disney princess. As an extra perk, these feeders can be placed in a way that squirrels can’t plunder them – “Rats in cuter coats,” as Carrie Bradshaw would say.

Multiple options under $40 Wild Birds Unlimited (1630 Scenic Hwy N 124 Suite U, Snellville)

Maintenance-free patio furniture and swings…

Relaxing and dining outdoors shouldn’t include splinters, nor should it include an annual sanding and repainting job. SoPoly combines Southern craftsmanship, American-made quality, and sustainable materials to create practically maintenancefree outdoor furniture. Every rocker, swing, table, loveseat (and more!) is made from weather- and fade-resistant HDPE poly lumber that is extruded, assembled and finished by hand in SoPoly’s Eastman, Georgia headquarters. It’s not painted (i.e., doesn’t need repainting), made of stainless steel hardware (i.e., no rust) and comes with a 20 year warranty (i.e., this is a no-brainer).

WOULD YOU RATHER...? HOMEGROWN VS FARMERS MARKET

Let’s start with what we know to be true: locally grown food is more nutrient-dense, fresher and generally yummier than its supermarket counterparts. Anyone with a Netflix subscription and a penchant for documentaries knows that.

So now the question becomes: do you grow your own food or do you have a standing Saturday morning date with the farmers market? The answer is that it depends on your love of the outdoors and ability to provide the time and labor required.

Homegrown

Nutritional Value

Homegrown barely squeaks out the win here, since the food is eaten immediately upon harvest.

Immediate Gratification, Part II

Have a hankering for salsa? Check the tomatoes and jalapeños in the pots outside your front door. Baking cookies and need three eggs? Walk across the backyard to the coop.

Quality Control

You control pesticides, soil quality and fertilizers in your own garden.

VS.

Farmers Market

Immediate Gratification, Part I

Tomato plants typically produce their first ripe fruit 60 to 100 days from when the seeds are planted. Hens need to be four to six months old to lay eggs…you get the picture! But most farmers markets occur weekly during the growing season (see the box for local farmers market dates and times!)

Freshness

Farmers market freshness is extremely high as produce is picked at peak ripeness. But farmers market produce travels across town while homegrown travels across the yard.

Tie

Cost

This one is a little trickier. There are a lot of upfront costs when starting a garden or homestead, such as acquiring plants/livestock, fencing, building housing, etc. But once all the needs are acquired, growing food at home is generally cheaper over time, though it requires significant time, labor and space. We’ll call it a toss-up.

SMALL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: GOOD THINGS HOME & GARDEN

73 S Peachtree Street, Norcross, GA 30071

Spring is finally here and the weather is perfect for spending a day out of the house! But whatever will you do? Take a bit of inspiration from me (your favorite small town explorer) and show some love to a local business this spring season. 2026, after all, is the year to show up and shell out for all the local small businesses that make Gwinnett County so special, so buckle up, roll the windows down and enjoy the ride, because we’re going shopping! What better way to kick off the season of growth, creativity and connection than a trip to one of Norcross’s oldest booming and blooming small businesses: Good Things Home & Garden.

What began as a small-town fresh flower shop slowly evolved into a quirky and creative gift shop with innumerable trinkets, tchotchkes, garden decor and more in the heart of historic Norcross! The owner, Randy Hamilton, opened the shop in 1980 and has since relocated to expand his business into the ever-evolving gift and garden emporium it is today. He enjoys the “hometown” feeling of operating out of Norcross, the feeling of greeting his regular customers, giving amateur gardeners insights on how to care for their own plants and chatting with the members of his community.

Here, you can find seasonal merchandise and clever creative displays, home decor, garden accessories, fragrances, funny gift cards and even a selection of homemade dips to snack on as you shop. A true feast, both for the eyes and the belly, and a bang-on bargain for the bank account, the selection at Good Things is broad, odd and covers every imaginable gift-giving ground.

Unsure of how to spend the delightful spring day ahead of you? Make yourself an itinerary around visiting some of the small local businesses in your area, grab a light lunch, maybe a couple of cocktails (sit on the patio if you’re like me and need a little extra vitamin D) and then take a walk through the nearest park. This kind of plan works for every occasion and for almost every season, though winter gets a bit nippy. Whether it's a first date, an outing with mom, a friendly hang or a simple self-care day, the secret to a nice spring is to surround yourself with good people and things!

Some say the shop smells like sunshine, others claim that entering the shop is like falling down the rabbit hole and seeing Wonderland before you. Whatever your fancy or fantasy, Good Things Home & Garden is the place to go for all your most whimsical household needs.

EXPLORE ROAD TRIP: CLOUDLAND CANYON IN RISING FAWN

Fall gets all the mountain hype, but I’ll argue this every time: spring deserves just as much love. You get the same sweeping views, minus the peak-season crowds, with days that are warm (but not too warm) and nights that still feel refreshingly cool. And after another unpredictable Georgia winter that can’t seem to make up its mind and delivered us all four seasons in one week, we’re more than ready to see flowers bloom and the landscape come back to life.

That springtime craving for fresh air and views is exactly why you should add a road trip (or, if you can, a weekend getaway) to Cloudland Canyon in Rising Fawn, just shy of the Tennessee line. Cloudland Canyon is one of the largest and most scenic parks in Georgia and is home to thousand-foot deep canyons, cliffs, caves, waterfalls, wildlife, mountain biking, horseback riding and more.

While we’d love to opt for a whole weekend in North Georgia, that’s not always possible. Luckily, even a day trip delivers. The park is known for its dramatic overlooks and waterfall hikes and it doesn’t waste time getting to the good stuff. The West Rim Loop Trail is a favorite (5 miles round trip, moderately strenuous) and was ranked by Backpacker Magazine as One of the Top 10 Hikes in the United States. It offers the type of views that make it hard to believe you’re still in Georgia.

For an easier trail for beginners and children, the Overlook Trail (1 mile roundtrip, easy) runs along the rim of Cloudland Canyon for approximately a ½ mile and you can hike down to Main Overlook, arguably the best view in the park. The Waterfalls Trail (1.8 mile round trip, strenuous) involves 600 stairs one way, but after the stairs, you’re rewarded with the sight of Cherokee Falls after ½ mile and then Hemlock Falls about ½ mile further down the canyon. The quantity of water over the falls varies greatly from month to month, but, in general, winter and early spring offer the greatest flow, so it’s perfect to add to your itinerary for your spring visit.

If you can swing a weekend, even better. Staying nearby lets you slow the pace, soak it all in and truly unwind. While there’s plenty of Airbnbs, yurts and campsites to choose from, I stayed at the brand new Cloudland Canyon Resort just minutes from the park. The panoramic mountain view from the pool alone makes it worth the stay. It’s the perfect place to reward yourself after a day on the trails and a strong argument for turning your day trip into a weekend getaway.

To add a unique activity for our DiG readers who double as adrenaline junkies, add Lookout Mountain Flight Park to your itinerary. Known as the largest and most popular full-time hang gliding school and resort in the country, it’s one of Rising Fawn’s most unexpected experiences. Hang gliders launch from 1,340-foot McCarty’s Bluff, soaring above the valley below. Certified instructors lead tandem flights and lessons, making it the perfect activity for adventure lovers.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

• Go early to beat the crowds (and the heat) with a morning start.

• Wear comfortable hiking shoes: waterfall hikes mean stairs… lots of them.

• Stay the night: The Cloudland Canyon Resort makes turning a day trip into a weekend easy and the view from the pool makes the entire stay worth it.

• Bring layers: Mountain weather, much like Georgia weather, does what it wants.

• Watch the skies: Hang gliding at Lookout Mountain Flight Park is weather-dependent and worth checking before you go.

DATE NIGHT: DOGGIE DATE ITINERARY IN GWINNETT

With the days finally getting longer giving us more time to enjoy the outdoors, it’s easy to fill them with new adventures, especially when you have a fluffy companion by your side. Gwinnett is a bustling county, always growing and constantly on the rise. Yet, it’s easy to forget the many parks and hidden spots our community has to offer.

In an effort to discover some of these new places, I turned to Explore Gwinnett’s website for inspiration. My dog, Honey, is a three-year-old rescue from the Cobb County Animal Shelter whose love for running wild matches her ability to meet new furry friends. After a bit of research, we discovered McDaniel Farm Dog Park in Duluth, located near Gwinnett Place Mall. With two entrances connected by a two-and-a-half-mile trail that loops back to the start, the park is truly a hidden gem. The dog park itself sits near the east entrance, offering plenty of parking and an easy walk so that the fun can start right away.

The park features two play areas: one for smaller dogs under twenty pounds and another for larger dogs. While Honey believes she’s 20 pounds, she doesn’t fool anyone. I wasn’t the only owner enjoying the beautiful weather; golden retrievers, huskies and Saint Bernards all romped together, clearly as happy as their humans.

Honey, being part boxer, is always ready to live up to her breed’s lively reputation. It didn’t take long before she met a golden retriever named Penny, who was more than up

for a friendly wrestling match. Thankfully, the park’s water fountain came in handy for two tired, thirsty pups after 10 minutes of non-stop play.

The park offered more than just space to run; it provided laughter, community and joy as we watched the many personalities of both dogs and owners mingle. When Honey finally decided she’d had enough of her “doggy fight club,” I knew we weren’t ready to head home just yet. A nice Saturday shouldn’t be wasted, so we made our way to downtown Duluth, only eight minutes away!

Downtown Duluth was bustling with activity. The parks were lively, shops were open and many businesses had water bowls waiting for their four-legged visitors. It made for a perfect walk to our next stop: 6S Brewery. This dog-friendly spot offered a relaxed atmosphere with a fantastic selection of beers, from lagers to IPAs and a few German-style favorites of mine. It was the ideal place to unwind and meet new friends, all while Honey basked in the attention of her newfound fans.

As the day came to a close, I headed home feeling grateful. After so many icy winter days we received at the start of the year, it felt amazing to finally get outside and explore the beauty our county has to offer. Gwinnett is full of wonderful places to visit and people to meet and with summer just around the corner, there’s no better time to make the most of where we live.

CALLAWAY RESORT & GARDENS

17617 US-27, Pine Mountain, GA 31822

A bit farther from Atlanta than the other gardens on our list, Callaway Resort & Gardens more than earns the drive. From vibrant floral displays to peaceful walking and biking trails, it offers something for every pace and interest. Callaway Gardens is home to more than 3,000 hybrid azaleas, tulip and topiary displays during their Spring Flower Fest. They also have a butterfly center where typically 1,000 or more butterflies flutter freely in one of North America’s largest tropical butterfly conservatories.

SMITH-GILBERT GARDENS

2382 Pine Mountain Rd, Kennesaw, GA 30152

While not quite as popular as the other botanical gardens on our list, Smith-Gilbert Gardens is one of the metro area’s most delightful hidden gems. This intimate garden includes curated plant collections, rotating sculptures, thoughtfully designed spaces and an outdoor art gallery. Its walkable size, convenient location and ever-changing displays make it ideal for repeat visits throughout the year. Lowkey, lovely and well worth the stop. It’s a reminder that you don’t have to go far to find something special.

GIBBS GARDENS

1987 Gibbs Dr, Ball Ground, GA 30107

Spring is in the air at Gibbs Gardens, with cherry blossoms, tulips and daffodils all a part of the garden’s early spring seasonal lineup. Voted the #1 Flower Festival in America by USA Today, and ranked the 10 Best Places in the World to See Daffodils, Gibbs Gardens is a must-visit. More than 20 million daffodils will bloom during the garden’s six-week daffodil season, so while reservations are not needed to visit the gardens, you may want to consider buying your tickets online to avoid lines. DiG tip: Plan on 3–4 hours to explore most of the gardens.

BOTANICAL GARDENS

After a winter that couldn’t quite make up its mind, with ice storm threats one day and 60-degree afternoons the next, spring in Georgia feels like our cue to step outside and start fresh. The air is warmer, the sunset sets later and weekend plans shift from indoors to anywhere with sunshine. As you’re making plans for spring, consider adding these botanical gardens within 50(ish) miles from Atlanta to your bucket list.

ATLANTA BOTANICAL GARDEN

1345 Piedmont Ave NE, Atlanta, GA 30309

Yes, it’s the most recognizable garden on our list and yes, you’ve probably been before. But the Atlanta Botanical Garden earns its spot every single time. With world-class plant collections, seasonal installations and an unbeatable midtown setting, it remains a must-visit no matter how many times you return.

GOIZUETA GARDENS AT THE ATLANTA HISTORY CENTER

130 W Paces Ferry Rd NW, Atlanta, GA 30305

Goizueta Gardens at the Atlanta History Center is a 33-acre experience featuring award-winning exhibitions, historic houses, enchanting gardens, interactive activities and a variety of year-round programs for adults and families. Their Quarry Garden is a native garden that contains herbal medicinal plants, the mysterious lost camellia, quiet waterfalls and Georgia’s largest native plant collection in one place. Goizueta Gardens has nine distinct gardens, capturing the variety of landscapes that have shaped Atlanta’s history.

DAY TRIP: DOGHOBBLE WINE FARM

Before I went to Doghobble Wine Farm, I was apathetic about wine. I would enjoy a glass with friends and family if there was an open bottle, but I would immediately go back to my comfort zone of cocktails and the occasional beer. I tended to avoid wineries but Doghobble feels like something completely different.

Located 15 minutes from downtown Dahlonega, Doghobble sits right along the Dahlonega Wine Highway. As I arrived on the wine farm, I was greeted by the first of Doghobble’s many unique features like a massive outdoor pavilion that overlooks the watershed on the wine farm’s 80-acre property. This is the first of two tasting spaces the farm has constructed, the second being a farmhouse with an indoor tasting room that the folks at Doghobble said would be ready for guests in early 2026. Walking past the wine counter, I saw a pasture full of goats, sheep, donkeys and alpacas. I took my glass of Doghobble’s Lenoir, a full-bodied red, and went over to pet as many of the animals as I possibly could.

The animals aren’t the only friendly faces at Doghobble, though. The staff at Doghobble are kind and knowledgeable,

and helped me find a wine that would best cater to my palate. Whether you’re a wine aficionado or someone trying to find your perfect glass, I’d recommend starting with a wine flight: five tastes of different wines that let you find your favorite without breaking the bank…or your liver. Since I tend to prefer darker, more bittersweet flavors, I opted for the red flight. The Saros stood out as my favorite, with its notes of stone fruit and soft spice. If reds aren’t your thing, there are white wine and sweet wine flights, as well as a wine slushie! The whole menu at Doghobble felt tailor-made for me, allowing a newcomer to the wine world to feel at ease.

That sense of welcoming is one I felt frequently from the Doghobble team, who work hard to foster a sense of community on the wine farm. The owner told me that many of the staff live on the property, in homes set further into the watershed. He also does a lot to give artists and artisans a place to share, hosting everyone from authors to jazz bands to professional chefs. That is what sets Doghobble apart: they’ve created their own community and you’re welcome to join anytime.

WELLNESS EXPERIENCES: ANIMAL THERAPY

With spring in full bloom, there’s no better time to focus on your wellness. Prioritizing your wellness doesn’t have to just be about getting active, though; it can take on many forms, such as animal therapy! Interacting with animals has proven to help release endorphins, which are those feel-good chemicals in your brain that help you de-stress. Check out these three can’t-miss spots where you can unwind with an adorable furry companion.

THE CATFÉ

If you’ve ever wanted to experience a cat cafe like the ones in Japan, look no further than The Catfé in Lawrenceville. Owners Roger and Brittany opened the establishment after backpacking across Europe and discovering this sense of community at local pubs and gathering spots. They combined this with their love of cats and opened up The Catfé! Here, you can enjoy locally roasted coffee from Phoenix Roasters, a menu full of tasty sandwiches and homemade pies, along with adorable cats that roam the space.

GOAT YOGA GEORGIA

Another popular trend that’s recently hit the wellness scene is goat yoga! If you want to experience it for yourself, check out Goat Yoga Georgia in Loganville. The class is taught by a certified yoga instructor from 3 Down Dogs Yoga and is open to all ages and skill levels. During the class, Nigerian Dwarf Goats roam the area and they’ll even jump on your back for a fun photo op! For more information, head over to their website at www.goatyogageorgia.com for upcoming class dates.

DRAGONFLY FARMS

Take your animal therapy to the next level with a Highland Cow Meet & Treat experience at Dragonfly Farms. Located in Cleveland, this farm is home to a herd of Scottish Highland Cows that are truly adorable! Their Meet & Treat experience features a 45 minute private session with the Highland cows, hand-feeding the cows with treats, photo ops and a small memento to remember your visit. Head over to their website at www.dragonflyfarmsga.com to book your experience!

Animal therapy is a great way to focus on your wellness goals while having fun with adorable furry friends! Whether you’re looking to experience a cat cafe, enjoy a goat yoga class or interact with some fluffy Highland Cows, there are plenty of places near Gwinnett to have the perfect experience.

NOT THE NoRm

UNEARTHING A YEAR OF HIGHLIGHTS

It has been over a year since I first took my position as mascot and columnist here at the DiG. In that time, I have brought grounded, down-to-earth stories and thought-provoking conversation to the county through my articles. Together, you and I have tried dining in the dark, learned Gwinnett’s rich history through the names of our streets, discovered the wide variety of pink foods available in our county and, of course, paid homage to some of the finest restrooms around. While the publication has always offered readers a snapshot of Gwinnett through its plentiful offerings, I sought out to bring something out of the ordinary to the table, something Not the Norm, and in 2025, we certainly did. To thank you all for joining me on my journey of unpredictable twists and turns, I thought we could take the next 270 words to reminisce about some of the greatest hidden gems we dug out of Gwinnett’s rich soil.

Looking back, I of course am first reminded of my first article: Gwinnett’s Best Bathrooms. There were so many to choose from: with Umaido’s heated seats, LR Burger’s vibrant neon signs and Two Cities Pizza’s full-on New York subway aesthetic, I was reminded of a famous children’s book: “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”.

Speaking of places, we followed that exploration up with a deep dive into the fascinating world of street names and their origins. Many of Gwinnett’s more unique street names have straightforward explanations, like Netherworld Way being the street where the renowned haunted house lies. However, I discovered that Norcross’s Beaver Ruin Road had a much more storied history, coming from a Cherokee man named Beaver whose home was ruined by a flash flood from a nearby creek. The creek became known as Beaver Ruin Creek and later the road borrowed this name, and the story along with it.

Just as the places of Gwinnett can take on stories of old, so can the items! This past summer, my team and I went on a thrifting expedition to find the most abnormal pieces the county had to offer. Some highlights included an old VHS camera, a chicken-shaped wine bottle holder and a storage tin made to look like a tub of cream cheese.

With all of these discoveries last year, I think we can safely conclude that Gwinnett has plenty to offer that’s Not the Norm. I can’t wait to see what other oddities we can unearth in the issues to come!

WE DiG: GROW & LEARN WORKSHOPS

We’re all looking for ways to improve ourselves this spring but many people struggle with knowing where to begin this journey. Of course, there are plenty of options for self improvement but my all time favorite way is to get out of the house and into the community. With the help of Grow & Learn Workshops, people like you and I can absorb a number of skills, from classes on sustainable gardening to yoga in the yard, community service and more.

Looking for something casual? Head over to Downtown Lawrenceville’s upand-coming plant store, T&T Plants and Things. Here you can participate in terrarium building workshops and bond with other plant lovers in your community as you learn to build your own micro-ecosystems. T&T also hosts plant care education classes as well as plant themed bingo nights, where you can learn, compete, mix and mingle with the other botany-loving individuals near you!

Plant-lovers, stick around, because there are more nature-forward classes available to you! While these workshops have less to do with succulent terrariums and more to do with perennials and produce, Live Healthy Gwinnett’s hands-on gardening workshops will show you tips and tricks for

keeping the perfect plot. Join gardeners of all skill levels and equip yourself with knowledge and tools about agriculture and environmental enrichment that will transform your backyard garden into a botanical nirvana.

But, if you’re like me, and you have the opposite of a green thumb, there is hope for you yet! You can still get connected with nature while attending a free outdoor fitness workshop in Johns Creek. Hosted in both Newtown Park and in Cauley Creek Park, these lessons are free, open to the public and all fitness levels are welcome! Here you will receive guidance from experienced instructors and can participate in anything from sunrise yoga to Zumba, weighttraining, walking classes and more! Make the time to treat your body right this season and get those gains!

And, if working out is less of a priority than socializing, consider attending a Flow & Grow yoga class at Cultivation Brewery in Norcross! Here you can enjoy hops and headstands, sip a beer while you stretch and enjoy the relaxing routines, while spending time out in nature (with all the convenient indoor amenities refreshingly close by).

Whatever class you choose to attend, remember to acknowledge and feel pride in the hard work that you are putting forth this season to better yourself and the environment around you.
