A 1.5-mile paved pathway connects both parks, which also offer tennis courts, picnic shelters, mountain bike trails and access to the River Walk. Hickory was founded in 1870 as the Town of Hickory Tavern which was known as a respite for stagecoach travelers and pioneers. Henry Robinson first built a tavern made of logs under a large Hickory Tree, thus giving its name: the Town of Hickory Tavern. The community became a haven for settlers and was later renamed to Hickory in 1889. Over 150 years have passed and this vibrant city is now home to a bustling downtown area for visitors to walk around and explore. Explore the Catawba River
Emanating from the Wateree River in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the 220-mile Catawba River winds along Catawba County’s northern and eastern border and is the source of the county’s three lakes.
Riverbend Park: This 690-acre park includes 1.25 miles of shoreline along the river with access for paddling and an observation deck perfect for viewing Oxford Dam or casting a line.

Encompassing nearly 1,500 total acres of preserved natural habitat, Catawba County Parks offer an array of amenities embedded into large-scale, beautifully scenic and highly diverse habitats that allow visitors to immerse themselves in Catawba County’s great outdoors. The county’s parks are open seven days a week, 362 days a year (closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day), starting at 8:00 a.m. with seasonal closing times to maximize daylight hours throughout the year.

The Riverwalk
Running a little over two miles through Geitner Park, the Riverwalk provides public access to Lake Hickory with an overwater bridge and a combination of waterfront and wooded trails.
The OLLE Art Walk
The OLLE Art Walk— named for Old Lenoir Road—connects visitors to Hickory’s vibrant arts district through a growing collection of murals, public art and historical markers. While the full walkway is still in progress, many of the stops along the route are already open and ready to explore. 3
The Aviation Walk
As part of the larger trail system, the Aviation Walk provides bicycling and pedestrian connectivity from the Riverwalk and OLLE Art Walk, across U.S. 321 via a steel pedestrian bridge, past L.P. Frans Stadium and Winkler Park and up to the Hickory Regional Airport. 2

The City of Hickory has been hard at work developing a network of 10-foot-wide paved trails connecting popular destinations and amenities in the city. Spanning 10 miles across the community, the Hickory Trail provides a safe and convenient path through changing scenery for both pedestrians and cyclists out for a little exercise or commuting between locales.
The Historic Ridgeview Walk
The City Walk
Connecting Lenoir-Rhyne University to Downtown and onto other sections of the trail, the City Walk follows the train tracks past City Walk Brewing and Olde Hickory Station and is a prime spot for a stroll with beverage in hand.
The Historic Ridgeview Walk stretches a little over a mile to connect the City Walk to other parts of the Hickory Trail through the historic Ridgeview community. The route incorporates historical markers to recognize and celebrate people and places of historical significance in Ridgeview.
Hickory FC just won championship league
A recent addition to Hickory’s growing sports teams is the Hickory Football Club, a semi-pro soccer team that kicked off in 2024. The club saw major success in its inaugural year by taking the title of the Southeast Conference Champs! They also won the National Premier Soccer League national championship in 2025. The team and coaching staff are made up of athletes from all over the world and is a feeder league for MLS. Whether you’re able to catch a home game or you’re a longtime football fan, watching the Hickory Football Club play is always a blast! You may even notice that the player’s jerseys tie into the history of Hickory with the Hickory tree that the original tavern was built beneath in the 1850s, inspiring the name of the city itself! There are also railroad tracks within the jersey’s logo, paying homage to the city’s ties to the railroad industry. The season runs from May to July.
The Epicenter for Sporting Events: Hickory Metro Convention Center
Whether you’re here participating in a sport or here to support as a spectator, the Hickory Metro Convention Center is a growing location for the North Carolina Sports scene. While the center has previously held tournaments and events for cheer, dance, wrestling and martial arts, the expansion of the center allows for many more events to come to life. In 2024, the center wrapped up its sizable expansion by adding over 46,000 additional square feet of space. Within that space includes a 35,000-square-foot multipurpose sports complex that includes eight volleyball courts, four basketball courts and twelve pickleball courts making it the perfect spot for many sports events.

Our area is home to premier public golf courses where you can spend the afternoon playing a round or watching a home game from one of our legendary sports teams like the Hickory Football Club or the Hickory Crawdads! For NASCAR fans, be sure to check out the iconic Hickory Motor Speedway, famous for its history as the birthplace of NASCAR legends like Junior Johnson, Harry Gant, Ned & Dale Jarrett and Richard Petty.
A Homage to the Community: The Hickory Crawdads
Originally known as the Gastonia Rangers, this minor league baseball team relocated to Hickory after the 1992 baseball season and has been legendary ever since. The Hickory Crawdads are the Single-A Affiliate of the Texas Rangers and can be seen during home games in Hickory at the L.P. Frans Stadium. For those who aren’t local to the area, crawdads or crayfish can be found in the waterways around Hickory which was the inspiration for the team’s name as many residents grew up catching these tiny crustaceans. The homage to the residents of Hickory will be further seen in the team’s new alternative identity as the Hickory Goat-Karts which will take the field in 2025. Hickory has a long history of wagon-making with the Piedmont Wagon Company which made recognizable dark green wagons with red wheels and yellow trim in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Both the colors and nod to the iconic wagons will be seen on the team’s jerseys. The company also made a model for children who were pulled by goats hence the name “Goat-Karts” for the team. As an additional fun element, the team’s goat can be seen with racing goggles to tie in Hickory’s legacy to the racing industry. The Hickory Crawdads are a community staple and offer a fun night for all ages at the ballpark. Catch a game from April to September!

The Crawdads have called Hickory home since 1993, moving from Gastonia where they played as the Gastonia Rangers.
Once they moved to Hickory, the new ownership wanted to pick an unusual and creative name for the team that resonated with the local community. Over 700 names were submitted in the name the team contest. The submissions were whittled down to a final five: the Hounds, River Cats, Valley Cats, Woodchucks, and Crawdads. Ultimately, the Crawdads name stuck as many locals grew up catching the critters in nearby creeks. Crawdads are also more active at night, fitting for a team that would play most games under the lights of newly constructed LP Frans Stadium. Contests were also held to name the team mascot Conrad and his long-time love interest, Candy. Conrad and Candy were married in an on-field ceremony during the 2018 season which was the first mascot wedding in Minor League Baseball.
The ‘Dads have been a Minor League affiliate of the Texas Rangers since 2009 after being originally affiliated with the Chicago White Sox (1993-1998) and
the Pittsburgh Pirates (1999-2008). Some notable Crawdads alumni that have been gone on to the Major Leagues include Magglio Ordonez, Jose Bautista, Carlos Lee, and Andrew McCutchen. The Rangers 2023 World Series winning roster featured 11 former Crawdads, including Evan Carter, Jose Leclerc, and Josh Jung.
The Crawdads have won three league championships (2002, 2004, and 2015) and hosted three SAL All-Star Games (1994, 2001, and 2014).
Part of the fun in Minor League Baseball, is the theme nights and giveaways that are paired with the 66 home games. The ‘Dads host traditional theme nights such as Princess Night, 80s Night, Christmas in July, Star Wars Night, and many others that a refreshed or introduced on a yearly basis. Giveaway items include jerseys, bobbleheads, tee shirts, and other unique items.
The Crawdads also introduce fun alternate identities that they take on for a weekend during the season. In 2026, the team will take on the identity of the
LLAMAS IDENTITY
For select games every season, the Crawdads take on the alternate identity of las Llamas de Hickory as part of Minor League Baseball’s Copa de la Diversion initiative. The logo features a llama chewing on a furniture leg in a tribute to the Hickory Metro area which is known as the furniture capital of the world!
Hickory Goat-Karts, which pays tribute to one of Hickory’s first major industries in wagon making and the city’s roots in racing. Past identities include the Hickory Couch Potatoes and the Hickory Dickory Docks, which were featured on MLB Network and ESPN’s SportsCenter.
A typical homestand runs from Tuesday night, with $1 hot dogs and dogs are welcome for $1 plus craft beer is discounted, through Sunday. On Wednesdays, kids 12 and under get in free, Thursdays feature discounted domestic beer and Pepsi products, Fridays have post-game fireworks, Saturdays feature giveaways or post-game concerts, and on Sundays fans can bring in church bulletins to get a discounted ticket with money going back to the respective church.

The Green Room Community Theatre
Established in 1987, this historic theatre emphasizes a love of the performing arts and gives locals an outlet to express their creativity. Beginning with just two shows per season, The Green Room Community Theatre has since grown and expanded into the old Newtown Post Office building, located in Newtown’s Historic Courthouse Square. After renovations, the theatre opened its doors back up in 2010 and has been putting on nine shows per year, along with special events. Hickory Community Theatre
Visit downtown Hickory and experience a true creative relic from 1948: The Hickory Community Theater! This theater originally consisted of a series of radio dramas aired on WIRC, however, in 1976 the city decided to update City Hall, gifting the old building to the community, allowing more space for productions to truly shine. Today, many are welcomed by the beautiful columns and regal architecture of this historic venue. Each season boasts new shows for all ages, including the ever-iconic Rocky Horror Picture Show!

Through the use of vibrant hues, this mural captures the story of the diverse men, women and children from various eras who worked in North Carolina’s textile industry. Art can be found in many forms in Hickory, including our public benches! This incredible piece is a dynamic visual of animals found in nature with a black and white color palette. Miracle of Hickory Park Mural

Another great addition to Hickory’s art scene is this mural that was designed and painted by local artist DeNeer Davis and art students from Hickory Career & Arts Magnet High School and OUTright Youth. Paying tribute to the artist’s old dream of playing professional basketball that never came true after an injury, the mural represents how art can be a vehicle to express oneself.
SALT Block
Foundation
As you explore Hickory, you’ll find our SALT Block, a place where art, science and literature coincide and flourish. This unique foundation helps fund the maintenance of buildings and other issues that arise for organizations in the area. The SALT Block campus first opened its doors as a cultural arts complex in 1986 to allow visitors and members of the community to experience art, science and literature in one area. It is home to the Hickory Museum of Art, Arts Culture Catawba, the Catawba Science Center, the Western Piedmont Symphony and the Hickory Choral Society.
Hickory Museum of Art
Founded in 1944, the Hickory Museum of Art represents the Unifour region, housing a collection of 1,500 objects alongside rotating exhibitions. Recently undertaking big renovations, exciting new developments are on the horizon for this beloved museum!
Hickory Choral Society
After its beginnings in 1978 as a place where locals would gather to create choral sounds together, the Society has become an integral part of Hickory’s music scene. They host a variety of events including concerts and children’s music camps.
Arts Culture Catawba
This organization helps to strengthen and support the culture of the community by providing grants, education, marketing and advocacy to organizations in the area. They also host a United Arts Fund campaign which raises money for eight funded affiliate organizations.
Catawba Science Center
This 35,000 sq ft center offers a variety of engaging exhibits along with a planetarium and aquarium galleries.The galleries at the center contain freshwater and saltwater galleries giving visitors the ultimate experience.
Western Piedmont Symphony
Have you ever had the opportunity to attend a live orchestra concert? If not, a trip to Hickory’s legendary Symphony is in order. They put on a variety of productions including a classical Masterworks series, Foothills Pops series, Youth Orchestra and other exciting programs!

The name of Hickory Tavern is changed to the Town of Hickory

The Piedmont Wagon Company is established by founders George Bonniwell and Andy Ramseur
The History Museum of Catawba County
This unique museum is housed in the former Catawba County Courthouse which was built in 1924 in downtown Newton. Here, you’ll discover the story of the Scots-Irish, Germans and English peoples who followed Native American trails along the Catawba River, looking for a place to call home. Their collections include intriguing artifacts from wagon benches and plantation desks to agricultural tools and more.
Hart Square Village
In 1967, Dr. Bob Hart purchased a 200-acre property that is now Hart Square Village to serve as a nature preserve. After years of finding historic logs from the North Carolina region and transporting them to Hart Square, Dr. Bob and a team of volunteers used the logs to build recreated historic buildings. These structures range from a Blacksmith Shop to Teague Cabin, Yount Tavern and others. The site operates on a membership basis but day passes can be purchased for those not local to the area.

1944: Hickory becomes the center for the worst outbreaks of polio, leading to the Miracle of Hickory

The Hickory Passenger Depot is rebuilt by the Southern Railway Company
1967: Catawba Valley Medical Center opens its doors
Harper House
Managed by the Historical Association of Catawba County, this historical home was constructed in 1887 and now serves as a museum. Inside, you’ll find beautiful Queen Anne styling and craftsmanship featuring details including intricate stained-glass windows and ornate brass doorknobs. Several families occupied this home, each appreciating the architectural beauty and preserving its legacy. Today, you can explore the restored home along with another historical property known as The Lyerly House on-site.
1951: The Hickory Motor Speedway opens as a ½ mile dirt track, leading to Hickory becoming known as the birthplace of NASCAR legends
1986: The SALT Block cultural arts complex opens
1993: The Hickory Crawdads baseball team is established

Olde Hickory Station
Constructed in 1860, this railroad allowed for Hickory to become a major trading center throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. After being decommissioned, it became the Olde Hickory Station restaurant and market in 2013 after renovations by Olde Hickory Brewery. Today, you’ll find that the inside pays homage to the station’s roots with a fun ambiance along with a stellar menu of food, drinks and craft beer.

Murray’s Mill
Spend the day exploring this historic site that has been owned by three generations of the Murray family. Visit the 1913 mill with original French buhr millstones used for grinding corn or check out the 1890s Murray & Minges General Store for a tasty snack!

Farmers markets offer the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in a new community. While some markets are only open seasonally, Hickory is proud to be home to a year-round farmers market so no matter what time of year you decide to visit, you can shop seasonal goods and unique gifts.
Hickory Farmers Market
Hickory’s Farmers Market is conveniently located in our downtown area at Union Square. With the market being open year-round outside, there are regular season hours and winter hours so plan accordingly! The regular season market is held on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. As for the winter market, you can find it on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The market keeps an updated list of vendors for each year on their website that you can look at before you go! You’ll find that Hickory’s Farmers Market has pretty much everything from bakeries and microbreweries to farmers selling seasonal produce and even artisan booths selling pottery, handmade candles and so much more. Even if you can’t take home the fresh veggies and fruit, there are plenty of locally made items that you can buy as a memento. Pro-tip: have a fresh bouquet of seasonal flowers made before you leave! They make the perfect splash of color for your home as a take away from your visit to Hickory!
Conover Farmers Market
This nearby market got its start in 2008 when community members wanted to create a place to bring together handcrafted goods and fresh produce. They’ve recently relocated to the heart of downtown Conover, where the new arched Conover walkway sign is!
Newton Farmers Market
Located in downtown Newton, this new seasonal market features a variety of local vendors selling everything from tomato & turmeric soap to jarred pickles, produce and other goodies. They operate from May until October on Thursday evenings at Herbert M. Yount Memorial Park.

A. At Cranford Brother’s Barbecue it has to be our smashburger, made from our brisket trim and rendered beef fat. It’s a traditional Okie smashburger with tons of pickled onion and cheese smashed into the two patties served with our house burger sauces and pickles.
Q. If you were to recommend a restaurant in Hickory besides your own to go to for lunch, what would it be?
A. Sundays at Tacos El Tio Chetos are a secret gem of Hickory, they specialize in lamb barbacoa and consomme soup made from the drippings of the lamb and top it off with live Mariachi bands.

A. Our most popular dish is the Market Melt. Tucker Bell, our Executive Chef, and I wanted to design a perfectly balanced burger that hit all the flavor notessalty, sweet, sour, spicy and umami - and we definitely accomplished that with the Market Melt. Hands down, the best burger I’ve ever had.
Q. What is the most popular drink you serve and why do you think guests love it?
A. Our Market Mai Tai is one of our most popular cocktails. We make all of our syrups and mixers in house and the Mai Tai highlights our house-made Orgeat. I wanted our bar to be Rum focused and the Mai Tai is the perfect drink to experience it.
Q. If you were to recommend another restaurant in Hickory (besides your own), where would you send someone for lunch?
A. While I tend to eat lunch every day at the Market, I would send people to Center Street Eats. I’ve enjoyed everything from there and like their grab-and-go approach.

A. My go-to drink recommendation would be a Cranberry Kiss. It has vodka, St. Germain, white cranberry juice and muddled red cranberries, so it’s very tangy, sweet and refreshing. Everyone loves that drink; it’s a real crowd pleaser.
Q. Can you describe the most popular drink people order at your work and why you think it’s so popular?
A. Espresso martinis reign supreme! Thanks to the rise of coffee culture and the irresistible allure of Instagramworthy moments, these bold, dark and frothy creations in their elegant coupe glasses have become a true classic, especially popular among guests who are new to cocktails, offering an indulgent and sophisticated experience without straying into overly complicated or experimental territory.
For those looking to mix things up, we offer a tiki espresso martini—a playful twist featuring rum and pineapple juice. And if you’re feeling adventurous, our “pantry” of housemade bitters, syrups, tinctures, infused spirits and even non-alcoholic options provides endless opportunities for experimentation.

A. That’s a tough one, but I’d have to suggest Engine #3 and Pontoon Party.
At No Entry, our “Engine” series of smoked cocktails pays tribute to our neighbors at Hickory Fire Station #1. Engine #3, a standout in the series, is a signature smoked old fashioned featuring City Walk Bourbon, tobacco bitters, a hint of orange peel and a Bordeaux cherry for a rich, layered flavor experience.

A. The most popular drink right now is the First Frost martini. It’s a very visually appealing drink so when people walk by a table that’s ordered one, it makes them want to try it. When they taste it too, they fall in love with the tropical yet tangy notes.

A. If we’re talking pure popularity, our Honey Chipotle Salmon is definitely the crowd favorite. But if you ask me what my personal favorite is, I honestly don’t have one. I kind of look at the entire menu as an art easel. I’ve spent my career traveling and cooking up and down the East Coast, and my goal has always been to bring all of those skills and acquired knowledge back to the kitchen. We put a ton of work into creating a seasonally rotating menu that focuses on comfort food, but always with a twist that’s loosely inspired by international flavors. More importantly, the inspiration behind the food isn’t just mine. We push really hard for creativity and continuous learning across our whole back-of-house team. The menu at Fourk isn’t just one person’s vision; it’s really a montage of all our different personalities,backgrounds and experiences coming together on the plate.

A. The most popular dishes at Plant Based Boss are definitely the Olmec bowl and Uncle John’s BBQ sandwich. The Olmec bowl is our signature burrito bowl, which features a house-made spicy and crunchy Mexican salsa from Vera Cruz. The Uncle John’s BBQ sandwich is a Carolina-style pulled-no-pork (made in-house), which has my uncle John’s BBQ sauce recipe that has been in the family for 100 years. Really, what makes all of our dishes stand out is that almost everything is made fresh daily in-house.
Q. If you were to recommend a couple of restaurants in Hickory besides your own to go to, what would they be?
A. My suggestions for restaurants in the area would be a bagel from North Hickory Market for breakfast with our plant-based meat on it, for lunch a vegan bahn mi from Hatch and dinner is any of the vegan options from Las Isabella’s. Being raised in California, Las Isabella’s has the most authentic Mexican flavor to me.
