Dear Connections Reader,

Fall is upon us—football games under the lights, crisp mornings, and the comforting return of routines that mark this season in Georgia. Here at ACCA, fall also brings reflection and preparation as we look ahead to important shifts in how we imagine aging well in our community.

You’ll notice this issue of Connections looks a little different. As part of reimagining what it means to age well, we are also reimagining the role this magazine plays in connecting, inspiring, and informing our community. What hasn’t changed is our commitment to sharing the essentials—our full program of offerings, upcoming special events, and plenty of opportunities to learn, create, connect, and thrive.

From day trips to overnight excursions to creative outlets, this issue is brimming with ways to engage. Our adventurous dining group continues to discover new flavors, and our Happy Hours prove that laughter shared among friends is one of the best forms of wellness. This spirit of connection and exploration was on full display when a group of 60 ACCA travelers returned from a once-in-a-lifetime journey through Greece. And the adventure doesn’t stop there! We’re already counting down to our next international trip to Ireland this spring.

Fall also marks Medicare Open Enrollment. We know that navigating health care choices can feel daunting, but please remember you are not alone. Our trained benefit counselors are here to provide free, unbiased guidance to ensure you, or your loved ones, feel confident in the decisions you make.

As we continue shaping this new vision together, one truth remains constant: the power of community. Whether you’re traveling with us, gathering for a class, volunteering or simply sharing a meal, you are part of the story we are building. You belong here. Please enjoy this refreshed issue of Connections, and stand by, the best is yet to come.

With gratitude,

Connections is a quarterly publication distributed by ACCA throughout Northeast Georgia. The information contained herein has been obtained from sources believed to be reliable. At ACCA, we believe aging is worth celebratingevery season, every story, every step. From new partnerships to old favorites, the past few months have been full of moments that prove just how important relationships are and how vibrant aging can be. We’re excited to give you a look at our mission in motion!

Cultivating Community with Creature Comforts

With gloves on and spirits high, about 20 volunteers from Creature Comforts Brewing Co. rolled up their sleeves to support ACCA. They spent three hours mulching, weeding, and preparing our community garden for a bountiful fall planting—all while sprucing up our campus grounds. Their hard work and heart for service proved once again that when neighbors come together, great things grow.

Navigate Medicare with Confidence

Medicare’s open enrollment season is October 15 through December 7. With it comes a flood of choices, deadlines, and details that can feel overwhelming. That’s where ACCA’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) steps in.

Our trained, unbiased counselors are here to help you understand your health and drug plan options, compare benefits, and make informed decisions with confidence.

No one should have to face Medicare alone. Whether in person or by phone, ACCA’s SHIP team will guide you through the process and help you find the plan that’s right for you. To schedule an appointment, contact Louise Platter at 706-549-4850.

Pizza and Police at Adult Day Health

Nothing brings people together quite like good food and a chance for good conversation. Adult Day Health participants recently welcomed members of the AthensClarke County Police Department for a lively pizza luncheon. We’re grateful to our local police for spending time with us and to our ADH family for reminding us how community is built.

Advocating for Older Adults on Capitol Hill

ACCA President & CEO Eve Anthony and COO Erin Beasley traveled to Washington, D.C. to participate in the National Council on Aging’s annual “Hill Day.” The event brought together aging advocates from across the country to meet with lawmakers and discuss critical issues impacting older adults. From program funding to policies that support healthy aging, Eve and Erin shared the voices and concerns of our community directly with decision-makers- ensuring that the needs of older adults in Northeast Georgia are represented at the national level.

Celebrating Impact with the United Way

On August 28, ACCA joined fellow nonprofits at Finished Goods Brew Works in Winder for the 2025 United Way Community Celebration. ACCA proudly received support for our Grandparents Raising Grandchildren program as one of the 2026 Community Impact Grant recipients. This vital resource provides support groups, case management, family activities, parenting education, and emergency assistance for non-parent caregivers across six counties. We are deeply grateful to United Way for recognizing and uplifting this essential program. Congrats to all of this year’s recipients!

Celebrating Angela Chavous: Direct Impact Award Honoree

We are proud to share that Angela Chavous, ACCA’s recently retired Long-Term Care Ombudsman (LTCO) Coordinator, has been honored with the Direct Impact Award at the Georgia Gerontology Society Conference. This prestigious award recognizes individuals who exemplify excellence in direct service to older adults and adults with disabilities. We are pleased to celebrate Angela’s legacy of service.

Sails, Sunsets & Memories: ACCA Travelers Cruise the Mediterranean

From the iconic ruins of the Acropolis to the sun-soaked shores of Santorini, ACCA travelers recently returned from an unforgettable Mediterranean cruise filled with history, culture, and camaraderie. The group explored breathtaking ports, shared countless meals, dancing, and fun on deck, while creating memories that will last a lifetime. We can’t wait for the next adventure!

More Than Miles, More Than Meals: A Season of Thanks in Athens

For the Athens Community Council on Aging (ACCA), November is more than a month on the calendar — it’s a season of gratitude, giving, and community.

The festivities begin with Turkeypalooza (Nov. 1–10), a 10-day fundraiser and community effort that ensures every family has the chance to gather around a holiday table filled with a fresh turkey, vegetables, and all the fixings. Thanks to the support of UGA’s Office of Service Learning, Campus Kitchen, and partners like Epting Events, more than 1,400 meals will be shared with older adults and their families this year. But Turkeypalooza is about more than food. It’s about connection, nourishing spirits, and making sure no neighbor feels forgotten during the holidays.

That spirit of togetherness carries into Thanksgiving morning with the Give Thanks 8k, Athens’ favorite holiday tradition. Hundreds of runners, walkers, and families will take to

the streets of downtown Athens, celebrating community, movement, and meaning before the turkey goes in the oven. Proceeds from the race fuel ACCA’s year-round programs helping older adults across Northeast Georgia live well and age vibrantly.

Together, Turkeypalooza and the Give Thanks 8k remind us that Thanksgiving isn’t just a day to eat, watch football, and hang out with the in-laws. It’s a season of showing up in gratitude, creating memories, and ensuring our older neighbors feel loved and supported.

Learn more or get involved at accaging.org or GiveThanks8K.com.

SCAN TO REGISTER FOR THE RACE

“Every mile, every meal, every moment shared is a way we can work together to touch lives this season.”

The Impact of Giving

• 1,400+ meals shared each November through TurkeyPalooza.

• 26 counties served by ACCA’s programs across Northeast Georgia.

• 40% of older adults in our region live on Social Security alone, making food support critical.

• In Athens, 1 in 5 seniors is at risk of food insecurity.

• Every race registration in the Give Thanks 8k helps fund Meals on Wheels, wellness classes, and companionship visits yearround.

How You Can Be Part of It

• Run or Walk: Register for the Give Thanks 8k or Kids Fun Run at www.GiveThanks8K.com.

• Volunteer: Sign up to distribute meals during TurkeyPalooza or cheer at the race start line.

• Sponsor: Partner with ACCA to make both events possible and showcase your business’ commitment to community.

• Give: A $30 gift provides a full Thanksgiving meal to a senior and their family.
