A story is told of a man named John Griffith. He worked as a bridge controller for the railroad. His son Greg enjoyed watching the trains rumble across the bridge and observing the passengers inside. One day while John and Greg were fishing along the riverbank, a ship approached the bridge, so John had to draw the bridge to let the ship go past. Afterward, he briefly stepped away to inspect some of the equipment. Just as the ship went past, he noticed smoke rising in the distance—a passenger train was quickly approaching. He rushed back to the control room to lower the bridge, but
He wasn’t by the river fishing anymore; to his horror, he saw him climbing around in the massive gears of the drawbridge. John dashed outside hoping to reach him in time, but the train was already too close. He shouted desperately for Greg to get out of the way, but the noise of the ship and the coming train made it impossible for the boy to hear. John realized his dilemma: if he saved his son, the train would crash, but if he closed the gears, he would crash his son. John made the decision to pull the lever and closed the bridge. The train crossed safely, but the decision cost him the life of his son.

In like manner, the Lord God sent his only son to redeem humanity, a people undeserving and ungrateful. He moved in love past our flaws before we ever cleaned up our act and made a way for us to be restored to the original order—a wholesome life. “… the lamb slain from the foundations of the world" (Revelation 13:8).
