This certainly seems to be the year for Western North Carolina to have a real winter! I’m writing this message on yet another snow day. And yet, just this morning, I noticed tulips beginning to push through the soil in my yard, a quiet reminder that change is always happening, even when we can’t fully see it. That feels especially true in economic and workforce development.
During the February Leadership North Carolina session in New Bern, we focused on how states compete and grow through smart workforce strategy. We heard from Secretary of State Elaine Marshall and Christopher Chung, CEO of the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, about what it takes to build strong communities: investing in people, supporting business growth, and aligning education with opportunity.
Recently, Governor Stein announced that North Carolina was named number one in the nation in workforce development. That recognition reflects a deliberate strategy – investing in jobs, people, and places, and creating clear career pathways for residents. Closer to home, A-B Tech was recognized by the Mountain Area Workforce Development Board for our NC Edge Customized Training Program in advanced manufacturing. These acknowledgments affirm what we already know: when we work together, our region is competitive and resilient.
So how does it all come together?
We stay connected to state leaders, regional partners, and local employers. We listen carefully to where industries are growing and what skills are needed next. Then we translate that information into practical training, certifications, degrees, and short-term programs designed to help you step into opportunity. Our goal is not only to keep North Carolina competitive, but to ensure you can participate fully in the prosperity that follows.
I spend a lot of time at meetings, staying close to what’s happening in the community. Those conversations help us anticipate new companies, emerging technologies, and workforce needs before they become headlines. And that preparation allows us to serve you better.
Spring is coming. Change is already underway. If you’re thinking about your next step, whether that’s a new job, a promotion, or a completely different career path, now is the time to explore how A-B Tech can help. We are here, year-round, ready to equip you with the skills and credentials you need to move forward.
We look forward to welcoming you,
Deborah D. Bailey Vice-President, Economic and Workforce Development & Continuing Education
A-B Tech is here to support you through this challenging time, and we want to help make the decision to stay in or return to school a bit easier. But you’re faced with giving your fictional people inner lives, of writing emotion in a way that isn’t cold or corny or obvious. You've heard the old creative-writing adage "show, don't tell" -- but what does it really mean, and how is "showing" achieved? How do you believably convey love, grief or (hardest of all) happiness? In this four-week class with international award-winning author and editor Melanie McGee Bianchi, you will sift through good and bad examples of emotion in literature, considering excerpts from contemporary commercial and literary fiction and elite classics. Discover how to make your readers feel what you're feeling.

Brian Swahn, 43, has always been a DIY kind of guy. After taking a couple of college courses early on, he decided college wasn’t for him, and spent 12 years teaching himself software development and video game design. A longtime Dungeons and Dragons fan, Swahn decided to try his hand at creating a video game that would capture what he loved best about the fantasy genre. His first roleplaying video game, The Great Gaias, was a surprise success. But when Swahn released a second game in 2023, it didn’t sell as well, and the father of two was forced to reconsider his life plans. He and his wife had recently sold their Long Island home to move to Bent Creek, NC where they purchased land to be near family. Soon after the move, Swahn began to search job listings. “I thought I got to get a real job,” he said.
Swahn’s sister told him about a short-term manufacturing course at A-B Tech that came with the promise of a job at Pratt and Whitney after training. The course fee would be covered by the state as part of NCEdge, North Carolina’s customized training program.
“I knew nothing at manufacturing,” Swahn said. “It was a word I’d hear politicians talk about. I had no idea what the job would entail, but my wife said take it and keep your mind open. I told myself I’d give it a year and if I don’t like it, I’ll leave.”
The Pratt and Whitney new hire course focused on safety and CNC machining, and to Swahn’s surprise, he had a natural knack for G-code, the type of programming the machines used. “Coming from a software background, I had taught myself how to code JavaScript and Python. I thought it’s another programming language I can learn; that’s interesting!”
After landing a new job at Pratt and Whitney, Swahn felt a similar sense of excitement walking into his new place of employment for the first time. He compares the sensation to the first time he attended a gaming convention in Boston in his late twenties. “The wide open spaces and futuristic machines gave me the same feeling,” Swahn said. “I fed on that. I said, ‘there’s something special going on here and it’s happening now, and I want to be a part of it.”
For a year, Swahn worked as a machine operator creating parts for jet engines. In January 2024, he was promoted to Team Lead for his leadership abilities. The job is extroverted and changes day to day, offering lots of opportunity to solve problems.
Learn more about Swahn’s story at abtech.edu/news and NCEdge at abtech.edu/NCEdge

A mission driven business stays grounded in purpose, guiding every decision with intention and clarity. When a company knows why it exists beyond profit, it builds trust, attracts loyal customers, and inspires employees who feel connected to something meaningful. This sense of purpose fuels resilience during challenges and creates lasting impact within the community. That strong mission becomes a compass that helps businesses grow with integrity, authenticity, and lasting value. A 2025 report from Chief Executives for Corporate Purpose found that companies aligning operations with a defined purpose achieved 25% higher revenue and 22% higher pre tax profit than non purpose aligned peers.
The A-B Tech Small Business Center is excited to host Johanna Patrice Hagarty (JPH), Cofounder and CEO of Biz Hero, as she leads the following programs during the month of May. These FREE programs will be held in-person at the A-B Tech Small Business Center.
Tuesday, May 5, 2026 (11:00 am – 1:00 pm)
This interactive session helps aspiring nonprofit founders and changemakers understand the risks, realities, and rewards of launching or growing a purpose-driven organization. Participants learn how to structure their ideas, diversify revenue, and establish strong operational and financial foundations before seeking grants or external funding.
Tuesday, May 19, 2026 (11:00 am – 1:00 pm)
This interactive session helps purpose-driven founders define, articulate, and operationalize their core values to guide business decisions and brand direction. Participants will explore their personal motivations, clarify what they stand against through “Enemy Statements,” and craft the opposite— “Ally Statements” or Guiding Principles—that reflect their commitment to ethical growth and conscious leadership.

Johanna is a founder, strategist, and coach who helps missiondriven businesses and cultural organizations grow with purpose and creativity. With 15+ years of experience in the arts, healthcare, hospitality, and retail sectors, Johanna has trained and supported 2,500+ small businesses, produced events drawing 150,000+ participants, and built partnerships that fuel cultural vitality and sustainable growth.
Her career began in the arts - opening venues, marketing local Arts Councils, and collaborating with icons like John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) and Billy Strings. Through her newest venture, Biz Hero, and proprietary Mission Critical Method™, she helps purpose-driven founders, businesses, and nonprofits cut through the noise with clear marketing strategies, development systems, and fractional support that honor their unique identity while driving measurable growth.

What is your business?
Rooted and Gather is a Christian café, bookstore and gift shop that hosts craft classes and community events for all ages—designed to be a warm, welcoming space for connection, creativity, and faith.
Why did you start your business?
God placed this idea on my heart over 30 years ago, and it’s been quietly growing ever since. I knew I wouldn’t feel complete until I brought it to life—and now, getting to watch it continue to evolve has been incredibly fulfilling.
Have you started other businesses?
Yes. I’ve owned several businesses over the years, including a gift basket and Christian welcoming service, gratitude seminars, and an aviation English business. My daughter and business partner, Cassie, is also the owner of Rooted Photography, a Christian-based family photography business.
How has the A-B Tech SBC assisted you?

Through A-B Tech’s Small Business Center, I completed over 20 workshops—both online and in person—worked one-on-one with a business coach, and had ongoing support to ask questions as they arose. They also connected me with key individuals who helped meet specific business needs along the way.
What is the most challenging aspect of owning a business?
The biggest challenge is balancing what we envision for Rooted and Gather with learning—through listening and observation—what our customers are truly looking for, and allowing the business to grow in response to that.
What kind of progress have you made on a business and/or personal level since you started working with the SBC?
We went from a mere idea that lived in my head for 30 years to operating Rooted and Gather in a 100-year-old former schoolhouse and church. Today, we’re open, growing, and meeting wonderful neighbors and guests every single day
What advice would you give aspiring entrepreneurs?
Take full advantage of every resource available to you. While there are certainly foundational principles in business, it’s also important to give yourself space to let the business unfold—and allow it to reveal what it’s meant to become. For us, it was important to stop and go to God to see what REALLY needed to be done and what was something we thought we should do because "that's the way it's always done."
Is there anything that you want people to know about you or your business that they may not already know?
More than anything, we want people to know they’re welcome to linger. Whether you’re coming in to work, to sit quietly, play a game, or simply to enjoy a cup of coffee, Rooted and Gather is a place to slow down and feel at home—not just grab and go.
