Onyx inflatable Life Jackets – Are they right for you?

Onyx inflatable life jackets are lightweight and comfortable, offering safety and peace of mind for a wide variety of recreational boating activities, such as fishing, flat water paddling, stand up paddling, or just relaxing on the water. You won’t even know you have it on until you may need it.

Advantages:

• Comfortable for continuous wear; especially in warmer weather

• Lightweight, compact design

• 22.5 lbs. of buoyancy when fully inflated (traditional life jackets offer 15.5 lbs. of buoyancy)

• Available in one universal adult size

Cannot use for:

• Not recommended for weak or non-swimmers

• Not for skiing, tubing, wakeboarding, white water paddling or personal water craft

• Not for individuals under 16 years of age

• Not for individuals under 80 lbs.

U.S. Coast Guard Approved:

• Look for the USCG certification on the product label

• Regular maintenance is required to ensure the life jacket functions properly

Inflation Methods:

MANUAL: Chamber is inflated by CO2 cylinder only when “jerk to inflate” handle is pulled or by breathing in to oral tube. Manual inflation is a good choice for paddling or fly fishing.

AUTOMATIC: Chamber is inflated automatically by CO2 cylinder when submerged in water, or when “jerk to inflate” handle is pulled. Also has oral tube back-up. Automatic inflatable life jackets are a good choice if you don’t expect to end up in the water, but want the peace of mind that it will inflate automatically if this does happen.

• U.S. Coast Guard approved Type III life jacket

• In-Sight – a cylinder seal indication window that shows GREEN if the product is properly armed and ready to use; shows RED if not ready to use

• Protective cover uses 400 denier nylon ripstop and nylon oxford

LIFE JACKET TYPES

TYPE I – Off-Shore Life Jacket / minimum buoyancy requirement 22.0 lbs., best for open, rough or remote water, where rescue may be slow coming.

Advantages: Floats you the best. Turns most unconscious wearers face-up in water. Highly visible colors.

Disadvantages: Bulky.

Sizes: Two sizes to fit most children and adults.

TYPE II – Near-Shore Buoyant Vest / minimum buoyancy requirement 15.5 lbs., good for calm, inland water, or where there is good chance of fast rescue.

Advantages: Turns some unconscious wearers face-up in water. Less bulky, more comfortable than Off-Shore Life Jacket.

Disadvantages: Not for long hours in rough water. Will not turn some unconscious wearers face-up in water.

Sizes: Infant through adult.

TYPE III – Flotation Aid / minimum buoyancy requirement 15.5 lbs., Good for calm, inland water, or where there is good chance of fast rescue.

Advantages: Generally the most comfortable type for continuous wear. Designed for general boating or the activity that is marked on the device. Available in many styles, including vests and flotation coats.

Disadvantages: Wearer may have to tilt head back to avoid going face-down. In rough water, a wearer’s face may often be covered by waves. Not for extended survival in rough water.

Sizes: Many individual sizes from small-child through adult.

TYPE IV – Throwable Device / minimum buoyancy requirement – Ring buoys 16.5 lbs., Boat cushions 18.0 lbs. Good for calm, inland water with heavy boat traffic, where help is always nearby.

Advantages: Can be thrown to someone, good back-up to wearable PFD’s. Some can be used as seat cushion.

Disadvantages: Not for unconscious persons. Not for nonswimmers or children. Not for many hours in rough water. Kinds: Cushions, rings, and horseshoe buoys.

TYPE V – Special Use Devices / minimum buoyancy requirement 15.5 to 22.0 lbs. Only for special uses or conditions. See label for limits of use. Varieties include boardsailing vests, deck suits, work vests, hybrid PFD’s and others. Advantages: Made for specific activities, such as white-water rafting.
