GENETIC REFERENCE GUIDE

SPRINTER VS MARATHON RUNNER

Who wins the race?

A sprinter is highly productive during a short period, while a marathon runner is reliably productive over a span of time.

Think about your cows similarly. Genetics solely selected for high protein and fat production are the sprinters that have weaknesses that could lead to early culling before ROI is met. Whereas balanced cows are consistently productive, profitable, and remain in the herd because they are healthy, fertile, and longer-lasting.

Do you want your cows to be sprinters or marathon runners?

Genetic Progress and Profitability with ABS Balanced Sires

Today’s dairy industry demands more than single trait selection or industry favorites. To maximize your milk check, minimize expenses, and optimize beef-on-dairy production, a genetic plan tailored to your herd, goals, facilities, and environment is required. That’s when you’ll drive real profitability through measurable genetic progress.

As herd goals diversify and production systems evolve, success comes from leveraging the impact balanced sires have on improving longevity, health, fertility, milk production, and profitability, without sacrificing genetic diversity. At ABS, the focus remains clear: helping you profit from genetic progress by building the right cows for your operation

DRIVE REAL PROFIT WITH BALANCED SIRES

The classic comparison of a sprinter and a marathon runner can be easily used to describe dairy cattle. A sprinter delivers intense productivity in short bursts, while a marathon runner maintains a steady, reliable output over time. While the sprinter’s speed and power are impressive, it’s the marathon runner who ultimately lasts the longest.

Balanced cows are designed to stay productive over time, combining solid milk production with the fertility, health, and longevity needed to remain in the herd long enough to generate a true return on investment—like a marathon runner. Genetics solely selected for high levels of fat and protein production

SIRE SUMMARY TPI FORMULA UPDATE

This Sire Summary, the CDCB released a formulation change to the Total Performance Index (TPI). The numeric drop from the TPI formula update was the result of a shift in weight from Fat to Protein. Let’s be clear. This does not mean that a bull got worse overnight. The bulls are still the same, but the way in which they are evaluated for TPI has changed.

are sprinters with potentially other weaknesses that lead to early culling before return on investment is met.

The framework for a profitable cow includes a balance of good scores for Productive Life, Daughter Pregnancy Rate, Cow Conception Rate, Milk, moderate Stature, Fat and Protein, and health traits like Somatic Cell Score. At ABS, the objective isn’t to create “sprinter” cows for customers that excel briefly and leave the herd early. Our goal is to deliver marathon cows that perform consistently across multiple lactations, driving overall profitability for customers.

With the update, is TPI still aligned with your genetic plan direction?

If you select genetics using this index, it is critical for you to review your genetic plan to ensure you will still incorporate genetics that meet your herd goals with the new TPI formula update. The average TPI drop is 35 points for higher-end sires, whereas on an individual bull basis, the average is closer to around 20 points, give or take. Thus, this update will result in some slight re-rank.

PREVIOUSLY: 19:19 Fat:Protein ratio | NEW: 14:24 Fat:Protein ratio

APRIL 2026 TPI®

[24(PTAP) + 14(PTAF) + 8(FE) + 8(PTAT) + 11(UDC) + 6(FLC) + 5(PL) + 2(HT) + 3(LIV) - 4(SCS) + 13(FI) - 0.5(DCE) - 1.5(DSB)] 3.8 + 2845

This TPI formula update does put NM$ and TPI at opposite ends of the Fat to Protein ratio spectrum, meaning the two indexes are moving farther apart. Because ABS selects for a balanced ratio of Fat and Protein, the industry change leaves us in the middle ground as we create sires with many strengths and very few weaknesses. This is another example of why an approach focused on a balanced genetic profile with a customized genetic plan mitigates the impact of industry updates and reranking.

A BALANCED GENETIC PLAN DRIVES YOUR PROFITABILITY

Rather than chasing a single number or industry index, ABS emphasizes building a customized genetic plan centered on balance. Balanced sires transmit strengths across multiple profit driving traits, making them easier to use and more reliable across different herd goals and production systems. By prioritizing a balanced genetic profile, producers reduce the risk of creating unintended weaknesses, protecting long-term herd efficiency. This approach ensures cows are productive, fertile, and long-lasting—capable of adapting to changing markets, management styles, and environments while continuing to deliver profitability year after year.

As we close another Sire Summary, one thing is clear: no matter where you are in the world, ABS offers the genetics, tools, programs, and people needed to profit from genetic progress. We stand behind you, helping you maximize your milk check, reduce day-to-day challenges, and boost additional revenue from beef-on-dairy production through a genetic plan tailored for your herd.

Improve Genetic Selection

BY UNDERSTANDING TRAITS AND INDEXES

There is a lot of data to consider when it comes to selecting genetics. Traits, indexes, milk proteins, fertility - what do they all mean and how do you use them within your dairy? Use this as a resource to help you better understand what each trait, index, or other selection factors describe. Then, use it to understand the meaning of the values given on a bull proof as seen on ABS Bull Search or a female genomic evaluation result.

Today’s U.S. dairy genetic evaluations are computed in April, August, and December by the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB), Holstein Association USA, and American Jersey Cattle Association. For Holstein and Jersey sires, evaluations are genomically enhanced and represent a blending of genomic data, pedigree information, and results from progeny.

Build Longevity Into Your Genetic Plan

On a dairy, the main discussion isn’t usually about what a cow does best. It’s typically about her weakest link, which leads to her culling. This might be udder concerns, reproductive issues, production deficits, injury, lameness, transition diseases, and productive life. Which is why, creating more balanced, profitable, healthy, long-lasting cows is so critical. If you aren’t considering the longevity of your cow herd, you should be. Exclusively chasing yield can result in negative shortand long-term effects. Thus, we don’t suggest single trait selection and believe a comprehensive herd longevity evaluation is necessary for a profitable, efficient, and sustainable farm.

Genetic progress is all about making better cows, faster! The only way to do that is selecting the right genetics, creating the right number of heifers, and deploying the right product type—sexed or beef—into the right cows. And herd longevity touches all three!

Because balance is a focus of our breeding program, ABS has the highest average PL score of bulls marketed.

PRIORITIZE PRODUCTIVE LIFE

Productive Life (PL) is vital to a dairy because it affects many key operation areas like culling rate, milk production, replacement rate, beef cross production, operational efficiency, emissions intensity, and sustainability . Today, the industry is shifting, focusing on cow lifespan as fewer replacements are available. Also, older cows produce more milk and reduce the need for more heifers, opening more pregnancies to be used in beef cross production and generating increased profit all around. Keeping PL in check results in a lower culling rate, meaning you:

» Incur less heifer rearing costs

» Can sell more high-quality beef cross calves

» Can select fewer and better dams to produce the next generation

» Have fewer 2-year-olds as a percentage of the milking herd

Delayed culling puts more money in your pockets up front from Beef-on-Dairy production and increases your milk output from the additional Lactation Two cows in your parlor.

PRODUCTIVE LIFE IMPACTS YOUR BOTTOM LINE

Let’s take a simple scenario. Which of the following sires will create more Combined Fat and Protein in a typical 33% cull rate herd:

» A high production bull with +150 Combined Fat and Protein (CFP)

OR

» A balanced bull with +110 CFP but +1 PL higher?

Check out the math.

By properly addressing Productive Life, you can delay culling where needed and positively influence production, lifespan, and days in milk, increasing short-term cash flow and driving long-term profitability.

TRUST IN ABS FOR THE LONG-HAUL

ABS Global aims to support you with strategic and customized genetic planning and reviews, technical support, reproductive consultation, and more. While selecting solely for PL sounds like a no brainer to positively influence profitability, it all depends on the right, dialed in genetic plan. Again, we strongly advise against single trait selection.

A strategic plan must be in place to harvest all the benefits of selecting for Productive Life, meaning just using the highest PL bull won’t work. Conversely, focusing only on Combined Fat and Protein at the expense of Productive Life also won’t help you reach your genetics goals, meaning you don’t have to settle for low PL to get high fat and protein production.

Focusing too heavily on one single trait can create problems in others. That’s why we recommend using well-balanced sires to produce cows that are productive, fertile, healthy, and built to last . This approach drives genetic progress, efficiency, and profitability— without the risk of unintended setbacks

Profi t from genetic progress with a customized genetic plan from ABS.

The Power of Polled

Horned cattle are more prevalent in the global dairy population because few producers are choosing to select genetics for polled cattle. Genetic selection for production, health, and conformation traits have historically trumped the selection of polled genetics. It was kind of one or the other—but not anymore!

Times are changing as the desire to create polled cattle increases. Public awareness of dehorning practices is a main driver in recent polled genetic selections. Naturally hornless cattle appeal to off-farm consumers from an animal welfare perspective, but as a producer, eliminating dehorning promotes calf welfare, reduces management practices, and increases safety for those working on dairies.

POLLED: THE DOMINANT GENE

Most do not realize the polled gene is dominant. In simple terms, animals with one copy of the polled gene and one copy of the horned gene will not have horns. The illustration below demonstrates the breeding outcomes of using homozygous or heterozygous polled bulls. It is important to note that if you are working towards a polled herd, you can use a heterozygous polled (Pp) sire with 50% of the resulting calves being polled. You can also use a homozygous polled (PP) sire, resulting in 100% of the calves being polled. This means you can create a naturally hornless animal in one generation. Because the polled gene is dominant, this allows us to create polled animals faster than if the gene were recessive.

PHENOTYPES & GENOTYPES KEY

HORNED

PP = True Polled (Homozygous)

Animal has no horns and all offspring will be born without horns. Pp = Polled (Heterozygous)

Animal does not have horns, but offspring may or may not have horns depending on their mate.

pp = Horned (Recessive)

Animal will be born with horns.

ST. JACOBS

TYPE WITHOUT COMPROMISE OF KEY DAIRY

TRAITS

The St. Jacobs brand has a long-standing history of bringing bulls to the marketplace that will not only sire beautiful cows but cows that are very productive and fertile. The goal of the St. Jacobs brand is to create cows that last longer, are more profitable, and of course, just good to look at!

We invest in the most elite genetics in all ABS programs to give our customers the best opportunity to build cows that fit the needs of their system. St. Jacobs is no exception. Take a moment to get to know each of the programs within the St. Jacobs brand.

LINEAR CHOICE

The St. Jacobs brand should no longer be considered as genetics only suitable for the showring. Knowing some of our customers are looking for balanced cows, we launched Linear Choice. These sires are selected strategically based on their ability to create balanced cows that work in commercial dairies. These sires are proven to produce dairy cows that are well-built, productive, and healthy. This lineup includes sires featuring right side linear that will generate moderate size cows with strong production and health traits. Form meets function with Linear Choice!

ST. JACOBS CHOICE

Trust in St. Jacobs Choice to deliver type without compromise. St. Jacobs Choice was born after the fusion of Judge’s Choice and Breeder’s Choice. Those of you may remember that Judge’s Choice is how St. Jacobs got started with a primary focus on show type animals. Over time, selection began to focus on great functional type but with better production and health traits, thus, Breeder’s Choice evolved. The combination of two foundational lineups in one program is your opportunity to create functional cows who you’ll love to look at

RED AND WHITE CHOICE

Our Red and White Choice program is stacked with sires tracing back to the most elite Red and White cow families in the breed. Similar to St. Jacobs Choice, Red and White Choice sires are also selected for more production and health traits along with type to make outstanding and productive cows. With this program, we mix the best of today’s Black and White genetics into the Red and White population. However, all sires in the lineup will be Red and White.

JERSEY CHOICE

Jersey Choice is your opportunity to use some of the most elite Jersey genetics. Similar to St. Jacobs Choice, Jersey Choice strives to deliver type without compromise. This lineup is focused on providing for those customers interested in creating high type Jersey animals. Our Jersey Choice lineup includes sires that offer balanced genetics with production and health to go along with genomic type, specifically high Jersey Udder Index numbers.

COMPONENT COLLECTION

Component Collection includes sires from the Brown Swiss, Ayrshire, and Guernsey breeds. Much like the rest of the St. Jacobs product offerings, these sires are selected from their respective breed’s most elite genetic lines. It is important to note that the Component Collection program is not a program you can enroll in.

Beef InFocus®

PROVEN DAIRY PERFORMANCE WITH BEEF SUPPLY CHAIN MARKETABILITY

Today, we see more beef cross calves created than ever before as dairies zero in on their genetic selection and turn up their selection intensity. Utilizing beef sires on lower genetic quality females has been a game changer for the industry and is now a widely adopted management strategy. As a result, the beef supply chain is seeing more beef cross calves entering the market than ever before.

With so many beef cross calves now entering the marketplace, feeders and packers are increasingly focused on securing only high-quality, predictable animals for their systems. Yet there remains significant variation in the quality of these calves. This variation is driving the beef supply chain to place even more emphasis on separating truly superior beef cross cattle from average beef-on-dairy genetics. Because the supply chain rewards top tier cattle, the need to differentiate your dairy by producing a premium product is greater than ever as competition intensifies.

Beef InFocus is your ticket to producing a premium beef cross animal, and the beef supply chain is recognizing that.

THREE DIFFERENTIATING FACTORS OF BEEF INFOCUS

1. BRED BY DESIGN

Beef InFocus® is powered by ABS Global’s exclusive terminal beef genetic line, NuEra Genetics®, which is a SimAngus hybrid line designed as an ideal terminal solution that maximizes productivity, efficiency, and sustainability while complementing the dairy cow.

2. VALIDATED FOR DAIRY PERFORMANCE

Before any sire makes it to our Beef InFocus lineup, we measure their predicted performance compared to more than 4 million fertility records on over 1,000 farms and 1.6 million calving events to ensure they meet our program thresholds.

3. BEEF SUPPLY CHAIN MARKETABILITY

With a strong emphasis on terminal traits in our genetics, we have established beef supply chain networks that recognize the value of Beef InFocus and the investment we have made creating the highest quality beef crosses the market has to offer.

Maximize returns by creating the highest-quality beef cross calves the market has to offer with Beef InFocus.

To enter the Beef InFocus program, sires must be identified as the best terminal genetics by our NuEra Profit Index and complete rigorous testing to validate their performance on dairy. We’ve added a step to determine the best use of each sire, which includes a phenotypic evaluation of frame and muscle score. Based on this evaluation, sires that best complement the Jersey and Jersey-influenced population are identified with the notation "recommended for Jersey."

NuEra Profit Index

Many producers are still relying on $Beef ($B) to select beef genetics for their dairies. That isn’t the best option and is why ABS developed NuEra Profit Index. Simply put, NuEra Profit Index is ABS Global’s proprietary index that measures growth traits, carcass traits, and feed efficiency of our Beef InFocus genetics. The index removes the guesswork and helps you find the right genetics for your herd.

WHY NOT TO USE $B FOR BEEF ON DAIRY

$B is derived from native beef data, is designed to work in beef-on-beef systems, and DOES NOT incorporate beef-on-dairy data. It predicts profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for postweaning and carcass traits.

You would find that the individual traits of $B are the same as those included in NPI, simply because the economics of the beef supply chain are what they are. However, the individual trait weights within the buckets are different because a dairy cow brings different qualities and deficiencies to the table than a beef cow.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN $B AND NPI

» Developed with the beef cow in mind, which is reflected by the economics

» Underpinned by beef-on-beef data

» Downplays efficiency, the #1 profit driver in the beef supply chain and focuses more on quality grade or the traits where Angus excel

» Developed with the dairy cow in mind, which is represented by the economics and trait weights

» Designed to work in beef-on-dairy scenarios

» Underpinned by beef-on-dairy data with growing pipelines

» Places more emphasis on feed efficiency, the #1 profit driver in the beef supply chain

LINEUP*

*This subset of the full ABS Beef InFocus lineup represents the highest terminal-indexing sires.

DEFINITIONS

Post-Weaning Gain (PWG): Expressed in pounds. Predicts a sire’s ability to transmit post-weaning growth to their progeny.

Dry Matter Intake (DMI): Expressed in pounds of feed per day. Predicts the difference in feed intake of a bulls’ calves during the postweaning phase compared to those of other sires.

Carcass Weight (HCW): Expressed in pounds. Predicts differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Marbling (Marb): Expressed in units of marbling score. Predicts the difference in the fraction of USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Ribeye Area (REA): Expressed in square inches. Predicts differences in ribeye size of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Fat Thickness (FT): Expressed in inches. Predicts differences in fat thickness over the 12th rib of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

NuEra Profit Index (NPI): A genomic selection index for terminal performance of beef-cross calves. Traits included are those impacting profitability in the beef supply chain: growth and efficiency at the feed yard and carcass value (weight, quality and yield).

Beef Advantage Index (BAI): An index based on dairy performance of beef-cross calves that includes fertility, calving ease, gestation length and stillbirth. Reported in tiers of Silver (Good), Gold (Better), Platinum (Best).
