Thank you for this Opportunity Wow, it’s hard to believe it’s May already. As I write this, it’s even harder to believe that this is my last magazine message as your Chair. Time truly flies!
Tanya Hanson Rocca Chair of the Board
What an incredible year it has been for the ABSDA - 70 Years Strong! That’s a huge milestone and one we can all be proud of. A heartfelt thank you goes out to Denis and the entire team for the dedication you bring to our members every single day. You genuinely care and it shows in everything you do. Kudos to our extraordinary show this year! Wow! You had me at bagpipes! From the trade show to the dinner and entertainment, right down to the free beer – it was truly a show to remember! I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. It was one for the books!
It has been an absolute pleasure serving as your Chair on the ABSDA Board. I’ve learned so much and I’ve had the privilege of meeting so many fantastic dealers and associates. If you’ve ever considered getting involved, I highly recommend joining the board. It’s a rewarding way to give back, expand your network and have a little fun along the way. Trust me - it’s a win-win!

Please join me in congratulating Jay Milton of Gillfor who will take over as Chair in June. And don’t hold it against him that he’s a Leaf ’s fan- he’s a great guy! (Just kidding Jay!) Also, congratulations to the most famous Islander I know - Duane McDonald from Callbecks HHBC - as he steps into the role of Vice Chair. Well deserved! With spring finally here and the warmer weather setting in, I wish you a prosperous selling season as we shift gears into our busiest time of the year. Thank you to all the members for your continued support of the ABSDA. I’ve truly enjoy connecting with so many of you and look forward to seeing you at washer toss and golf in July---you’ll probably hear me yelling “Fore:! Looking Back to Lead Forward:
70 Years of Building Supply Excellence
As spring arrives, it brings with it a spirit of renewal, growth, and reflection. In that same spirit, 2025 marks a defining milestone for our association—the 70th anniversary of the Atlantic Building Supply Dealers Association (ABSDA).
It’s an opportunity to look back on where we’ve come from, celebrate the progress we’ve made together, and most importantly, chart a course for the future of our industry.
Denis Melanson President
Founded in 1955, ABSDA was born from a simple but powerful idea: that dealers, distributors, and suppliers in the building materials sector could achieve more by working together than they ever could alone. In the early years, our founders faced a very different industry landscape—one where communication was slower, information harder to share, and collaboration across regions more complex. Yet, even then, the value of connection and community was clear. By pooling knowledge, building relationships, and supporting one another’s growth, our early members laid the foundation for a resilient and forwardthinking association.

Over the past seven decades, we’ve seen incredible change—both in our industry and in the association itself. The 1970s and ’80s brought consolidation and expansion. The 1990s ushered in new technologies and a growing awareness of customer experience. And in the past 20 years, we’ve navigated economic cycles, supply chain shifts, and most recently, a global pandemic that tested our adaptability and strength. Through it all, ABSDA has remained a steady partner to its members, evolving to meet changing needs while staying true to our core purpose: to support and Richard Hamel strengthen the building EASTERN QUÉBEC & NORTHERN NEW BRUNSWICK supply industry in Atlantic (418) 520-6244 rhamel@castle.ca Canada.

Today, we are proud to serve close to 600 members across the region
and country. Our offerings have expanded well beyond what our founders could have imagined—from workforce development programs to a rejuvenated Expo and digital tools like the ABSDA member app, product training video libraries, and social media connectivity. We’ve launched career awareness campaigns aimed at inspiring the next generation of industry professionals, and we continue to advocate for the interests of our members at every level. Yet even as we celebrate this milestone year, we know that the work is far from over. Our industry faces important challenges: labour shortages, the rapid pace of digital transformation, the growing demand for sustainable products and practices, and a competitive retail landscape that requires agility and innovation. These issues are not just trends—they are signals that we must continue to evolve, learn, and lead.
As we look ahead, ABSDA remains committed to being a catalyst for progress. That means listening closely to our members, anticipating what’s coming next, and investing in the tools, knowledge, and connections that will ensure long-term success. It also means recognizing that while our history is important, our future will be defined by the choices we make today. Throughout 2025, we will continue to celebrate our 70th anniversary with our upcoming summer events and our Leadership Conference later this year. These aren’t just celebrations—they’re reminders of the relationships and shared values that make our association strong. I encourage you to take part, to reflect on your own journey in this industry, and to engage with the many opportunities ABSDA is creating for collaboration, learning, and leadership. On behalf of the entire ABSDA Board and staff, thank you for being part of this incredible legacy. As we honor the past and embrace the future, let’s continue building something great—together. We’re Rethinking Training—Here’s Why! Ask any building supply dealer what makes their business run, and they’ll tell you: good people. But getting those people trained, confident, and ready for the job? That’s a constant challenge— especially when time is tight, travel is expensive, and many of our members are working out of rural or remote communities. That’s why, at the ABSDA Academy, we’re rethinking how training works.
PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE PROJECT Onboarding on Steroids
Looking to the future, our most exciting initiative this year is the Product Knowledge Project, introduced during the ABSDA EXPO Gala. This project leverages AI technology to create an on-demand training platform that will help members train employees more effectively. Phase One focuses on developing onboarding videos that introduce new staff to the fundamentals of key product categories—giving them a solid foundation from day one. Focusing on Mental Health Partnering with the Canadian Mental Health Association While Mental Health Week (May 5 to 11) may be over, the importance of mental well-being continues every day.
Bu Welln ilding Menta ess Togeth l Healt e h Awa r reness
This year’s theme, Unmasking Mental Health, encourages open conversations about mental health and the barriers that prevent individuals from being their true selves. What is Masking? Masking is the act of hiding or suppressing aspects of ourselves— our emotions, traits, or behaviors—often to fit in, feel safe, or avoid judgment. While masking can sometimes help us navigate social situations, it becomes harmful when individuals feel forced to hide who they are day after day. Over time, this can lead to exhaustion, isolation, and a loss of self-identity, deepening mental health challenges. Let’s keep unmasking the stigma, supporting one another, and creating environments where people feel safe to show up as their true selves—not just for a week, but always.
