PIONEERS’ PARADISE

A LEADER IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Beverlyn Johnson Wilks NURSING ADMINISTRATOR

ON NAVIGATING THE COVID-19 GLOBAL OUTBREAK & SURVIVING THE DISEASE by Ann Marie Bryan

T

he rapid spread of the COVID-19 disease created challenges for healthcare systems worldwide. Today, healthcare workers continue to be integral in the global response to the pandemic. Despite facing significant health risks, these healthcare professionals have risen to the demands of treating COVID-19 patients.

VBD Magazine is delighted to feature nursing administrator Beverlyn Johnson Wilks, who navigated unfamiliar terrain during the COVID-19 global outbreak and, thankfully, has survived the COVID-19 disease.

12

FOR ME, NURSING IS NOT JUST A PROFESSION, IT’S A CALLING. “The most rewarding aspect of working in the healthcare industry is the satisfaction derived from helping patients to recover from their ailments and seeing improvements in their quality of life,” says Beverlyn. “For me, nursing is not just a profession, it’s a calling, so at the end of the day, my job is to help patients maintain their health as best as I can.”

During our interview, Beverlyn reveals her inspiration to serve others, the challenges of being on the frontlines during the COVID-19 pandemic, and how to prevent burnout while being a healthcare professional. BACKGROUND Originally from central Jamaica in the parish of Clarendon, Beverlyn is the second born of eleven children. She was encouraged by her now deceased parents, Stanley and Estrina Johnson, to pursue higher education. In 1976, she entered the 3-year Secondary Education diploma program at Church

VBD Magazine Teachers’ College in Mandeville, Jamaica. After graduating, Beverlyn sought and gained employment as a teacher at Denbigh Secondary School. A year later, she migrated to the United States of America. In 1984, she enrolled in the nursing degree program at City University of New York, and later graduated as a registered nurse in 1988.

PIONEERS’ PARADISE

I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN PASSIONATE ABOUT HELPING PEOPLE AND MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THEIR LIVES.

THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC The pandemic caused healthcare professionals to pivot to new protocols as they work and perform acts of heroism under stressful conditions. Before the pandemic, healthcare workers had been vigilant about protecting themselves while saving patients’ lives. However, the novel coronavirus has propelled healthcare workers into uncharted territory, where many patients with an infectious disease were housed in one facility.

As a graduate nurse, she worked at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. However, her goal was to specialize, so she began to seek opportunities elsewhere. Soon, she gained employment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at St. Mary's Hospital, New York, where she acquired a wealth of knowledge and experience. Later, she served as the nursing director for the unit, spending a total of 16 years there. In 2005, St. Mary's Hospital closed its doors, but Beverlyn was fortunate to move into nursing leadership at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn. She worked at the hospital until 2021, completing 33 years in nursing. INSPIRATION TO PURSUE NURSING The healthcare industry has many compelling careers, no matter your skill or educational level. Many of these jobs come with appealing earning potential, stimulating work environments, and flexible work schedules. “I have always been passionate about helping people and making a difference in their lives,” Beverlyn tells us with a smile. “From a tender age, I demonstrated compassionate tendencies towards the suffering of others, wanting to relieve their stress. When I played with my siblings or friends, I wanted to be the teacher or nurse. As I matured into adulthood, I realized the important role that nurses play in improving people’s lives. Plus, there are lots of opportunities for growth in the industry.” SERVING OTHERS “The healthcare industry offers an unparalleled opportunity to assist others, and I love that. Every day, I get to help patients, staff, and families, cope with challenging situations. Also, I get a chance to brighten their day, and hopefully, witness their improvements. That’s just amazing.”

such as professionalism, being able to work in a team, and practicing effective communication. Critical-thinking, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills are essential for success. These skills can have an enormous impact on patients, colleagues, and others.”

“The year 2020 was a significant year because as a healthcare worker the challenges were unbearable. Nevertheless, we encouraged and helped each other as we stood on the frontlines. We had to assess each situation and take into consideration the risk accompanying it. Of course, we followed the hospital’s new protocols.

THE YEAR 2020 WAS A SIGNIFICANT YEAR BECAUSE AS A HEALTHCARE WORKER THE CHALLENGES WERE UNBEARABLE. NEVERTHELESS, WE ENCOURAGED AND HELPED EACH OTHER AS WE STOOD ON THE FRONTLINES. To be a successful nurse you must fulfill the educational requirements. But how important are essential skills such as teamwork, communication, and work ethic? “A good work ethic is critical and goes a long way. In this fast-paced environment, you can’t go wrong with timeless skills

At that time, I served as an administrative nursing care coordinator covering a geriatric population of 220 residents. I made my faith bigger than my fear as I went to work each day. Once I hit the hospital floor, my knowledge and experience took precedence. Even so, the rate at which people were getting severely sick and dying was extremely scary. We faced staff shortages because my coworkers were also becoming sick. I pressed on though because as a registered nurse I had solemnly pledged, before God and in the presence of those who had assembled at my graduation, to practice my profession faithfully.” EXPERIENCING THE COVID-19 DISEASE “I’m thankful to be alive today. Lord knows, it could have been otherwise, because on October 3, 2020, I was diagnosed with COVID-19. The ambulance transported me to the hospital where I was currently employed.

friends, and God, the Almighty healer. Four weeks post discharge, my oxygen therapy was discontinued. Today, my respiratory status has greatly improved, and I continue to follow-up with appointments, treatments, and home remedies. The fact that I’m still alive means that the Lord has more work for me to do. I was intrinsically motivated by that and the fact that I would have more time to spend with my family, siblings, relative, friends, and associates. For sure, I have a testimony about the goodness of God.” TIPS TO AVOID BURNOUT Healthcare workers are unsung heroes. With many still in the COVID-19 warzone, we asked Beverlyn how they can prevent burnout. Here are her tips: • Set boundaries between your work and personal life. • Listen to your body. • Plan time for rest and relaxation. • Do self-reflection and make wellness a part of your daily routine. • Protect your mental health and get help when you need it. • Exercise regularly and practice stress reduction techniques. • Eat a well-balanced diet and get enough sleep. • Acknowledge your hard work and celebrate your progress. • Reach out to your supervisor or a therapist for help, if necessary.

The acute treatment started in the ER and as my COVID symptoms worsened, I was transferred to the ICU. I spent three weeks facing this intense illness and was cared for by my amazing coworkers. The quality of care I received made me love my coworkers even more. Kudos to them and cheers to all who visited with prayers, food, and words of encouragement. Sometimes, my visitors were not allowed into my room, but they could see me through the large glass window. I’m grateful to them for letting me know that they were standing with me. I will never forget all that they did to bring me back to life. They absolutely exceeded my expectation.

14

THE FACT THAT I’M STILL ALIVE MEANS THAT THE LORD HAS MORE WORK FOR ME TO DO.

I was transferred from the ICU to a stepdown unit and there I spent another three weeks, slowly recuperating. On November 10, 2020, after approximately six weeks of hospitalization, I was discharged. I went home with oxygen therapy and was further assisted by outpatient medical care, family,

WHAT’S NEXT “I’m relaxing and spending time with my family, siblings, and friends, and travelling. Next on my list is perfecting my skills in interior decorating, crafting, event planning, and writing. With respect to writing, my life lessons will be beneficial to those who will read my books. Of course, I’m available to do voluntary work in the healthcare industry. Above all, I’m open to where the Lord will lead for I am His workmanship, created to do good works, which He prepared in advance for me to do.”

POWERFUL IN PURPOSE DR. LUCIEN W. JONES MB. BS. CD.

Family Physician & Visionary by Ann Marie Bryan

F

or well over two years now, the COVID-19 pandemic has been impacting almost every area of our lives. While the outbreak has overwhelmed healthcare systems around the world, many doctors and other healthcare workers have gone above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that their patients receive proper treatments. At VBD Magazine, we salute and celebrate these selfless individuals who have the strength, tenacity, wisdom, and knowledge to keep us healthy. One such medical professional is prominent family physician Dr. Lucien W. Jones, who is highly revered for the trusted care he provides and the way he does it. Dr. Jones has been practicing medicine in Jamaica since 1978.

15

PIONEERS’ PARADISE During his distinguished career, he held many notable positions and has been the recipient of numerous accolades. He was Past President of the Medical Association of Jamaica (1993- 1995), Vice Chairman of the National Road Safety Council (1995 – Present) and was honored by the Government of Jamaica in 2012 when he was awarded The Order of Distinction, Commander Class, for outstanding and important service to Jamaica. In 1995, Dr. Jones was privileged to deliver the highly regarded Grace Kennedy Lecture - The Jamaican Society: Options for Renewal. Speaking exclusively with VBD Magazine, Dr. Jones shares the importance of balancing his career with other commitments, the challenges he faced in his career, and his thoughts on telemedicine. It’s your time to reset and refresh, so read on! VBD: Why did you pursue a career in medicine? DR. JONES: My older cousin the late Dr. Louis Jones was my inspiration. Unfortunately, he drowned shortly after becoming a surgeon. Initially, I was accepted in college to pursue studies to become a neurologist, but later shifted to family medicine after a long discussion with the Professor of Medicine at that time.

ON A DEEPER LEVEL, IT’S ALL ABOUT THE SERVICE TO MANKIND THAT REALLY INSPIRED ME TO CHOOSE THIS PROFESSION.

On a deeper level, it’s all about the service to mankind that really inspired me to choose this profession. Both of my parents were teachers who lived exemplary lives. My dad, a great dad, became a politician and rose to the rank of Minister of Government and President of the Senate in Jamaica. He lived a life of service, helping many Jamaicans to achieve a better standard of living. My father was my hero and he motivated me to live a life of service to others.

(L-R) The Hon Earl Jarrett, Deputy Chairman of The Jamaica National Group of Companies & CEO of Jamaica National Building Society, The Most Honorable Andrew Michael Holness, Prime Minister of Jamaica, & Dr. Lucien W. Jones

VBD: What experiences contributed to your success as a family physician? DR. JONES: I love people and really enjoy talking with them and resolving their health challenges. Early in my career, I was taught the importance of listening to the patient so that I can clearly diagnose the problem. So, the lesson is that careful clinical assessment is more important than depending on high tech equipment to arrive at a diagnosis, as useful as they are in the practice of modern medicine. In addition, as a doctor who is a Christian, I pray continuously for my patients. VBD: What challenges did you have to overcome in your career? DR. JONES: I have been practicing now for over 40 years, but it was hard as a young physician to establish a practice. I had to be patient while I gained the confidence of patients. As an entrepreneur, I had to adjust to managing staff and the business aspects of the practice. Reserving time for continued medical education is now less of an issue.

I AM PRIVILEGED TO BE THE DE FACTO LEADER OF THE NATIONAL ROAD SAFETY COUNCIL OF JAMAICA, BEARING THE TITLE VICE CHAIRMAN, WITH THE CHAIRMAN BEING THE MOST HONORABLE ANDREW MICHAEL HOLNESS, PRIME MINISTER OF JAMAICA.

Now, my main challenge is getting patients to understand the importance of lifestyle changes—diet, exercise, reduced stress, and taking medications regularly. As we go through the COVID-19 pandemic, I had to spend more time with patients, just to talk about their issues. Oftentimes, this is

spontaneous and not scheduled, but can be more critical than medical advice or prescription. VBD: The COVID-19 pandemic changed the way we live and work. What steps have you had to take to adjust to our “new normal”? DR. JONES: Now, I’m wearing masks all day. There is more space between myself and patients during the period when I am hearing about the challenges being faced. In addition, I limit the number of patients in the waiting room. There is a special examination room for patients suspected of having COVID-19. Thankfully, COVID-19 vaccines are now available. My staff and I have had our 2 shots, plus the booster. VBD: Do you think telemedicine is a viable and beneficial option for a patient and physician? DR. JONES: Absolutely, but not for me. I believe I would be offering my patients less than optimum care if I were to depend on

I LOVE PEOPLE AND REALLY ENJOY TALKING WITH THEM AND RESOLVING THEIR HEALTH CHALLENGES. I know it has become popular, but I have resisted going that route even though we are dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, because I am not comfortable treating my patients from a distance. My patients are grateful that I can still diagnose them face-to-face and that we continue to do home visits. VBD: What advice do you have for someone wanting to pursue a career in medicine? DR. JONES: Go for it. For the right reasons though—for the love of humanity, and for the help you can offer, and not only for the remuneration and status. VBD: How do you balance your career with other commitments?

18

DR. JONES: By the grace of God, I find the time to fulfill my commitments. Recently, I have modified my schedule so that I work four days a week as a physician, taking off weekends and Thursdays. I am privileged to be the de facto leader of the National Road Safety Council of Jamaica, bearing the title Vice Chairman, with the chairman being The Most Honorable Andrew Michael Holness, Prime Minister of Jamaica. This position carries with it international obligations and of course requires overseas travel to attend meetings, workshops, and conferences. Further, I am a trained evangelist with responsibilities at my place of worship. Also, for many years, I have been blogging . Helping me to balance all that I do is Vivienne, my wife of 48 years and counting. A faithful, loving, and patient wife is a gift from God. Vivienne is now retired, formerly worked as a Vice President at Victoria Mutual Building Society in Jamaica. We got married when I was just 22 years old and still in med school. Vivienne has been my rock and life partner. I’m forever grateful for the love of my life, well… except

VBD: What are your personal interests outside of medicine? DR. JONES: I have a deep interest in photography. I take pictures at church every Sunday and publish them with a summary of the sermon on Facebook Sunday Camera. I’m also an avid reader. I no longer read fiction, but mostly spend time reading books from nonfiction authors like Dietrich Bonhoeffer and John Stott, to name two. VBD: What’s next for you? DR. JONES: I would like to help my country develop fully as a sovereign nation and also rescue our people from the shackles of crime, injustice, and poverty.

CREATING BOOKS THAT EDIFY

Olivia Shaw-Reel

AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR & PUBLISHING COACH by Kerry-Ann McPherson

O

livia Shaw-Reel is like a field of bright and bold sunflowers. She radiates confidence, strength, warmth, and joy. No matter where you encounter her, whether in person at a book signing, or on social media, prepare for a pleasant experience with laughter, love, and encouragement. Her brand is one of positivity, purpose, and passion. This talented storyteller began writing short stories at the tender age of seven, completed her first full-length novel at nine, and was published by 10 years old in a young authors’ compilation. In 2015, she released her first novel, Soul Cry, which sat at #1 for 16 consecutive weeks on the Amazon Top 100 charts. Since then,

20

Olivia has written and published more than 25 novels and garnered two additional #1 bestselling books, Matters of the Hart: A Tale of the Dysfunctional Hart Sisters and What God Has Joined Together. Olivia wants her readers to understand that "we all go through hardships, but it doesn’t define us. There is always hope and a second chance waiting, as long as we have breath in our bodies.” Her characters overcome their unique situations, and she hopes that her readers know that they can too. Furthermore, Olivia enjoys helping others accomplish their literary dreams through her faith-based consulting company. To date, this 31-year-old has published, edited, and ghostwritten more than 200 books for

authors across the nation. She resides in Milwaukee with her husband and together, they host The Reel Love Podcast. We sat down with Olivia to talk about her craft, her secret to staying organized, and why it is important for authors to have a publishing coach. Here are some of the best insights that she had to offer. VBD: What affirmed your calling as an author? OLIVIA: God saw it fit that I would become a writer. For as long as I can remember, I have always enjoyed painting a picture with words. If I close my eyes, I can go back to my childhood room and feel so much comfort in the innocence of it all. Hundreds of notebooks with my scribbles

VBD Magazine filled my bedroom, and for hours I would get lost in each page, creating, writing, crossing out, and rewriting. It didn’t dawn on me until I became an adult that I had a gift. I’m blessed to be able to do what I love every day of my life. VBD: Who has been your greatest cheerleader? OLIVIA: My husband and family have been my rocks and biggest supporters, and I am so blessed to have them in my life.

LITERARY DEN

IN EVERY NOVEL, BEYOND THE JUICY STORYLINES, DEVELOPED CHARACTERS, AND SPICY TITLES, THERE IS AN INFUSION OF FAITH, REDEMPTION, AND HOPE.

VBD: As an author of 27 books, what’s your secret to staying organized? OLIVIA: Believe it or not, I don’t use any sort of outlines when I write, and I have no special formula. Whenever an idea, thought, or scene pops into my mind, I simply grab my laptop or a notepad, or use the Notes app in my phone, and just let the words flow. Consistency has been the driving force behind my 27 books and counting, and knowing that someone, somewhere can be touched or moved by my words is inspiring. Because of this, I strive to release a new project every few months.

I ALWAYS SAY THE THREE Es–ENCOURAGE, EMPOWER, AND ENTERTAIN–ARE WHAT I ENDEAVOR TO ACCOMPLISH.

VBD: Is there a central message that runs through all your books? OLIVIA: In every novel, beyond the juicy storylines, developed characters, and spicy titles, there is an infusion of faith, redemption, and hope. These books are more than just words; they’re a form of ministry for those who read. I always say the three Es— encourage, empower, and entertain—are what I endeavor to accomplish. If I can help someone escape to an alternate reality, where they can leave their problems behind, even for just a few hours, then I’ve done my job.

VBD: Why is it important for authors to have a publishing coach? OLIVIA: I wish I had someone to show me the ropes early on in my writing career. I could have avoided many mistakes—from signing bad contracts, to learning the importance of marketing and branding, to simply publishing a high-quality book. Publishing coaches offer solutions to problems you may run into while learning the industry and should be relied on for their expertise. That is where I come in. I desire to be that helping hand to new and aspiring authors by sharing my experiences and professional opinion where needed. VBD: What is your most rewarding experience as a publishing coach? OLIVIA: Seeing authors hold their book baby for the first time, after implementing my tools and resources, is the most rewarding experience for me. Every writer deserves to see his or her work come to life, and I love being part of that process as a publishing coach.

VBD: What are some ways that introverted authors can be successful in the industry? OLIVIA: People would be shocked to know that I am super shy, but introverted authors should be their authentic, genuine selves, and allow their natural, beautiful personalities to shine through. It may be tough getting out there and speaking about your work, but if I can do it, you certainly can. The next advice I would give is that you must always remember your ‘why.’ Set up mailing lists so you can interact with your audience without the intimidation of a public setting. Establish relationships with readers through book clubs and social media fan pages and allow them to be your street team or outreach team—let their reviews, word of mouth, and posts do the “hard” part for you. As I said, it may be scary to unveil yourself to the world, but you must show up and believe in your craft, even if you must do it afraid.

Click and get online VBD: What is something about you that your readers would be surprised to know? OLIVIA: Readers may be surprised to know that I am good with my hands beyond writing. I love painting, drawing, and making jewelry.

SPEAKING LIFE INTO YOUR STORY

Christa DelSorbo NARRATOR AND VOICE OVER ARTIST by Dr. Henritta Stewart

C

hrista DelSorbo was born and raised in the Appalachian Mountains. She grew up on stage dancing and speaking. Ever the science nerd with a love of anatomy and movement, she pursued and enjoyed a career in physical therapy and eventually stayed home to raise a family. She and her husband, Carl, have been married for 26 years and have two amazing sons who have flown the coop and gifted their parents with daughters to love as each one has gotten married this past year. In this new season of empty nesting, Christa began pursuing her dream of

22

narrating audiobooks. She has narrated 12 full length novels thus far and has 4 more “on the table” to complete early this year. Her specialty is working with southern accents. She loves the nuance of each one, Appalachian Highland to Coastal Drawl and everything in between. “I’ve dabbled in theater most of my life. I did a bit of radio voiceover work in college and have always enjoyed reading aloud,” says Christa DelSorbo, Narrator and Voice Over Artist. “My husband is actually the one who encouraged me to pursue this as a career. I contacted an author and asked her tons of questions… and the rest is history.”

Christa loves learning about characters and “hearing” their voices. “One of the things I find interesting about narration is the fact that everyone has different (and often strong!) likes and dislikes. Personally, I enjoy a sincere, clear voice. In fiction, character differentiation is crucial to be able to follow a storyline. Bonus points for accents done well.”

id you know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit? (1 Corinthians 6:19). Therefore, it is importance to exercise regularly to take care of your temple. Did you know that exercise can enhance creativity? Then why is it so difficult for authors to get started or to maintain a regular exercise regimen? Here are some of my favorite excuses for not exercising and solutions on how to overcome them. If you’re like me, you can probably name a few of your own. I don’t like going to the gym. If this sounds like you, perhaps a walk outside would do the trick. If you don’t like being alone, grab a friend and hold each other

accountable. If music is your thing, reach for your earbuds and get moving. Explore bike riding or learn a new sport. The point is to find something you enjoy and do it. I don’t have time. We all have busy schedules. The key to finding time to exercise is to make it important. Block time on your calendar for physical activity. Just 20-30 minutes of exercise each day can be effective. Walk in place, use resistance bands, or lift small dumbbells during the commercial breaks of your favorite television show. Remember, we make time for the things that are important to us. I’m tired. When we’re tired, the last thing on our mind is getting exercise. Did you know that exercising reduces fatigue and

improves energy? Exercise boosts endorphins, which make us feel rejuvenated and increases oxygen to the blood. It’s expensive. Just throw on a good pair of shoes and go outside. Walk tall with your head up, stomach slightly tight, and shoulders relaxed. Start with short walks with light intensity and gradually build up to longer walks with increased intensity. In summary, exercise is as important to our routine as writing itself. When it comes to health, we can combat excuses brought on by lack of exercise, sitting long hours while writing and even late-night writing. By developing strategies to commit to a better lifestyle, we can eliminate excuses and increase productivity.

All That Fills Us BY AUTUMN LYTLE

The journey toward healing starts with a single brave step, but it is never walked alone. All That Fills Us follows an anorexic woman named Mel Ellis who decides to embark on a cross-country thru-hike as a last-ditch effort to make something of herself. Along the way she meets strangers with their own stories, as well as ghosts from her past who can no longer be ignored. Despite the physical challenges of the thru-hike, her own dark thoughts pose the biggest threat she’ll have to overcome in order to find peace in the life and the body she has been given. 26

VBD Magazine

A Character Interview with AUTUMN Your main character, Mel Ellis, has a history of struggling with an eating disorder. What do you hope to portray by telling her story? I hope to portray an honest view of the disorder that will give readers a true glimpse of the realities of living with anorexia, as well as to make those suffering from it feel less alone. I want to turn my experience into something useful and life-giving to others. Like other mental health issues, anorexia can be a lonely and lingering experience. The road to recovery is never easy, straight, or smooth. Through Mel’s story, I hope to portray the difficult and winding road that accompanies a longing to get well, to show that doubting and backtracking and relearning the same lessons over and over are totally normal parts of the healing process. I also think Mel’s story speaks to anyone who has ever doubted their self-worth or felt like their story wasn’t big enough to matter. Mel meets a lot of people on her journey, and many of them are normal people whose normal lives were interrupted by this strange girl on a mission. They save her, bit by bit, not with grand gestures, heroic feats, or by saying the magic words to unlock healing. They do so by showing up, listening, and offering what little they have to give. I’m hoping readers can recognize the small, otherwise normal life-givers in their own lives and strive to be more like them, as Mel ultimately does. Can you tell us a little about the personal journey that Mel embarks on in this novel? The really cool thing about having an anorexic character head out on a cross-country thru-hike is that she’s forced to face her disorder head-on. She literally won’t survive the trip if she refuses to see what the disorder is doing to her, so she has to relearn that food is a life-giving thing instead of an

LITERARY DEN

area of her life where she can punish herself. Through the people she encounters and the natural world that constantly surrounds her, she slowly begins to understand the concept of grace and accept that she is a willing candidate for it. She is so hard on herself at the beginning of this book and honestly a little hard to love because of it. She hides behind a thick veil of sarcasm so people can’t see how much she’s grown to hate who she’s become.

where they need to be, even if it will take everything they have to get there. I’m not saying I do all these complicated feelings justice, but I try to use Mel and her journey to at least touch on those points.

My editor told me it was so hard to restart the book on each of her read-throughs because Mel grows so much over the course of her journey and it was painful to see her back at rock bottom. I wanted to avoid writing a story where all of Mel’s problems vanish and that by learning to love herself, she gets to live happily ever after. That’s not life and that’s not what recovery looks like. So even though Mel grows and heals, the ending of the book stresses that the process is never truly over. Why did you choose to have Mel embark on a physical cross-country journey while also taking on the emotional journey of facing her inner demons? What parallels can be drawn between the two? I wanted a more visual representation of the healing journey. Recovering from an eating disorder can feel so cyclical, so I wanted to show the reader that even through all Mel’s missteps, she is still moving forward. Still moving toward a goal. I also wanted to pick a route that wasn’t known for its beauty or popular in the thru-hike community because that’s how recovery feels. It’s not full of breathtaking views and it’s not an accomplishment that feels like a big bragging right. Recovering from an eating disorder looks odd to the outsider. We’re taught as a culture to eat less and exercise more, but in recovery we celebrate weight gain and rest days. And for that reason, I wanted a lesser-loved, lesser-known trail that doesn’t instantly endear the reader to the journey. Recovery isn’t something the addict sees as glamorous or even really looks forward to most of the time. They do it because it’s the only way to get to

I

n the novel, When the Day Comes, Elizabeth Conant-Wells is born with a unique gift: to live two lives simultaneously. When she goes to sleep in one, she wakes up in the other, without any time passing. In 1774, she’s Libby Conant, one of the first female public printers in Virginia. She’s helping the Patriots and providing for her family. The man she loves, Henry Montgomery, has secrets of his own. In 1914, she is Anna Elizabeth Wells, the daughter of a successful shipping magnate. Her family is “new money,” and her mother wants to marry her off to an English marquess to gain a title and prestige on the eve of WWI—but Libby would rather continue her work for women’s suffrage in America. On her twenty-first birthday, she must choose which life to keep and which to give up. But how does one choose to forfeit a life?

An Interview with GABRIELLE Your main character, Libby, lives in two separate eras, Colonial Williamsburg and 1914 New York. Which would you rather live in? I love both time periods, so it would be difficult to choose. Several of my ancestors arrived in America between 1607 and 1640, so I feel firmly planted in that era. I also love Colonial Williamsburg. Each time I visit, I feel at home walking the streets, visiting the shops, and interacting with the interpreters. With that said, the modern conveniences and advancements in 1914 might win me over in the end. Telephones, automobiles, movies, and indoor plumbing sound a lot more pleasant than colonial life. How did you choose the two time periods Libby travels between? From the moment the idea came to me, I knew Libby would live in Colonial Williamsburg in 1774. I had recently visited there, and it captivated my imagination.

LITERARY DEN As I considered other time periods for her second life, I wanted one that contrasted in a unique way. I had watched a documentary on the American Dollar Princesses, hosted by Elizabeth McGovern, who played Lady Grantham in Downton Abbey. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, English lords needed to save their crumbling estates, and “new money” Americans were looking to break into the upper echelons of society. They did this by marrying their daughters off to aristocrats to gain titles. It’s estimated that over two hundred American heiresses married into the British aristocracy, bringing with them over twenty-five billion dollars in dowry. As Libby is fighting to gain independence from England in 1774, her mother is trying to force her back into the English aristocracy in 1914. I love how these periods contrast. How does each time period impact Libby? The irony of Libby’s existence is that in 1774, she works hard as a public printer. She is trying to keep her mother out of debtor’s prison and her sister from becoming an indentured servant. Every day is a struggle. In 1914, her family is wealthy, and she leads a tedious existence, with little purpose beyond her work as a suffragette. There are aspects of both time periods that she identifies with, and aspects of both that frustrate her. Her biggest frustration is that in both eras, women are forced to fight for the freedom to choose their own paths. What do you hope audiences take away from When the Day Comes? As I wrote When the Day Comes, the theme that continued to play through my mind was the sovereignty of God. When events happen that are out of Libby’s control and she does not understand how anything good can come from them, she is reminded that God is sovereign. His plan is far better than anything she can imagine. We don’t always get to know why things happen, but sometimes God allows us to see His purpose behind our pain. I finished the last couple of chapters of When the Day Comes while I was waiting for the pathology report of a tumor I had removed. While I wrote, God’s sovereignty permeated the pages of the story as well as my own life.

He whispered His promises to me through Libby. He is in control, and no matter the report, His plan is perfect. That is what I hope my readers take away from this story. Thankfully, the tumor was benign.

WRITING IT, SPEAKING IT & BELIEVING IT by Icylin Morgan 38

VBD Magazine

B

estselling author Cheryl D. Tatum is a wise mother who foresaw the turbulence, pitfalls, and difficulties that come with teenage years, and took action. With great determination, she penned the words of her groundbreaking book, A Teenager’s Guide to Affirming, to prepare her now 15-year-old son Demariun for this season of his life. “The greatest moment of my author career was when I watched my son, who inspired the book, read, and apply the principles to his life,” says Cheryl.

LITERARY DEN

WHENEVER INSPIRATION HITS, WRITE! IF YOU HAVE TO JOT DOWN NOTES ON A NAPKIN OR IN YOUR PHONE, WRITE.

VBD: What kind of mindset does someone need to be successful? CHERYL: A mindset of “all knowing.” Knowing there are infinite possibilities out there. Knowing that anything is possible. Knowing that God gave us the gift of co-creating our reality. Knowing that God has already paved the way to a blessed life and all we have to do is know that whatever our heart desires within God's will is already created in the spiritual world and our believing faith brings it to pass in the physical.

Her daughter DeKauri is now six years old and will also learn the principles of speaking and affirming who she is with the power of her tongue. Cheryl is a shining example of Zig Ziglar’s affirming words that “you are born to win, but to be a winner, you must plan to win, prepare to win, and expect to win.” In her interview with VBD Magazine, Cheryl Tatum shares her wisdom on writing, engaging with readers, and the kind of mindset that is needed to be successful. VBD: Who inspired you to begin writing? CHERYL: As I look back, inspiration has always come from God. I didn't know it as a child, but I began writing poetry and songs at 8 years old. I only stopped when life became busier. I was nudged by the Holy Spirit around 2012 to begin writing again. VBD: What was the scariest part about becoming an author? CHERYL: It would be sharing my true feelings out into the open and giving intimate details about my experiences with God. VBD: What advice would you give to authors who just entered the publishing industry? CHERYL: Whenever inspiration hits, write! If you have to jot down notes on a napkin or in your phone, write. Also, never be afraid to voice your true feelings because I guarantee there is someone out there who feels the exact same way and you can never know who you'll be helping. I always add a disclaimer in my books, "This is solely my opinion and if this doesn't resonate with you, then it may not be for you at the present time."

VBD: What are two tips for engaging with readers? CHERYL: Let them know that you are human too, and you have made mistakes in your journey. Let them know the feelings that arise are feelings anyone could have. Let them know the experiences they experience can happen to anyone.

WHATEVER ENERGY, FEELING, THOUGHTS, OR EMOTIONS ENCAPSULATE MY SOUL, GOD WILL RESTORE IT BY MAKING IT ANEW AND PUT ME BACK ON THE PATH OF RIGHTEOUSNESS.

VBD: What is your go-to Scripture when things get tough? CHERYL: Psalm 23. I am reminded that there's no need to want anything because it's already done. God's blessings and blessings to come are laid out for me. Whatever energy, feeling, thoughts, or emotions encapsulate my soul, God will restore it by making it anew and put me back on the path of righteousness. Not only that, but even though I go through hard times, God's protection and love never leaves me; and His comfort is always there. When I consider my protection, this Psalm reminds me that when I feel wronged, God is the one to bring vindication. I do not need to utter a word unless it’s to thank God for His victory. Finally, I will forever have God's grace upon me, and I will forever dwell within the love of God. VBD: What's next for you? CHERYL: Currently, I’m working on more inspirational books to show people who they are in the eyes of God, letting them know just how God sees them. Also, I'm working on a podcast with a dynamic author and screenplay writer as my first guest.

THE CREW ROLLED OUT A LARGE TANK FULL OF WATER, BUT IT WAS WHAT RESIDED IN THE TANK THAT MADE ANDREW’S LUNGS DEFLATE LIKE A BALLOON. Coney Island. There are lots of places I drew inspiration from, and I’m really proud of how that book turned out. So now I have an officially published book that’s special to my heart because I love its message. It’s one I have felt on more than one occasion.

SilencingTheSiren

When I started writing fanfiction for my favorite book series all those years ago, I never imagined I would one day be an officially published author with more books in the works. It’s been a long journey, but I’ve learned so much along the way. I’m very grateful for the friends I’ve made along the way too. So many people have been a part of my writing journey, and I appreciate each of them. I’m most thankful for the Lord who has been with me every step of the way.

By Denise L. Barela

I

’m excited to share Silencing the Siren with you! This book was so much fun to write and research. I learned so many fun facts about old cars, old New York, and even doorbells! Yes, you read that correctly. Doorbells. These noisy items were such a novelty in the 1920s that they were often given as Christmas gifts! Writing is something I’ve loved doing for a long time. It really all started when I was eleven years old. I had a favorite book series, and I desperately wished I could be a part of its world. Since it wasn’t real, and I couldn’t actually join in all their fun, I decided to write my own adventures in their world. I had no idea at the time that this was called fanfiction.

As silly as it sounds, this really is where my writing journey began. It expanded over the years to include more fandoms as my interests grew and changed. Through writing fanfiction for an anime I enjoyed, I met someone who would become a good friend. She helped me get started on a fantasy book I wanted to write, and I ended up finishing it for my school program. As I worked on that book, my mom and Chautona Havig had the idea to write a fairytale Christian historical mystery series. I signed on with The Little Mermaid and got to work. Now I just had to figure out where I wanted to go with this story. The setting was the 1920s, and I had a mermaid I needed to incorporate. So, I went to a freakshow on

Though she underwent challenging times, Theresa rose from the ashes, and is now telling her story. There is no stopping this fearless warrior. VBD Magazine is delighted to introduce you to Theresa—her infectious laughter, her contagious passion, her audacious faith, and her miraculous testimony. Spend a few minutes with this down-to-earth author and she will leave an indelible mark on your soul. VBD: Who inspired you to begin writing? THERESA: My father and mother are the key to my walk to achievement. My mother was a spy for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). She would go and apply for jobs, and if there was discrimination, she would report it back to the chapter in Pensacola Florida. She passed away in 2016. My father is the son of a sharecropper. Life was hard, racism was evident, and there was very little money to spend. When he was just a young man, my father saw lynchings, and his family had to kill their pet pig to survive because they had no money to purchase food. Determined to be different, my father became a porter for the railroad and moved on to be an engineer. My parents taught us that education was the pinnacle. Most of my siblings went on to receive a higher education. That is why I am a proud graduate of Tuskegee University. VBD: Tell us about your book, She Wore the Name. THERESA: She Wore The Name is a Women’s Fiction book. It’s about how Sarai Chameleon wears her name in everything that she does. Good or Bad: She will affect the lives of those around her. She is from Black Southern Wealth. She must forge her way through demons of rape, family curses, voodoo, betrayal, lies, and so much

Click and get online more. It is a haunting tale of the survival of her soul! Will she win? Read and find out! VBD: What do you hope readers will get from reading your book? THERESA: My prayer is that readers will be encouraged to be more responsible for their actions and the direction of their lives. There is always someone looking at the spectrum of our hearts to see if we are good or bad. We can lead others to success or despair. It’s all in how we chose to live out the wearing of our names. VBD: Tell us about your scholarship program. THERESA: I love learning! It is classic, orgasmic, foundational, and necessary for success! I give away scholarships to young students heading to a two-year or four-year institution. They must maintain a “C” average. We do want to know how they intend to wear their names and how they will impact or change the world. We pay directly to the establishment of their choice. Two students are provided with $500.00 each twice a calendar year. We would like to do more, but it is based on sales of the novel as well. So read on proud parents and supporters! VBD: You are a two-time cancer survivor. Share with us how you overcame that challenge. What impact did it have on your faith?

I highly recommend to anyone undergoing cancer treatment to have a strong prayer team. I had emergency surgery because I also had blood poisoning at the time. In addition, please get a second opinion, if possible. Keep a strong mind by using the Word of God. I am also an ordained Minister and I assure you the Gospel of Jesus Christ provides solutions for emergency situations. Additionally, eating a balanced meal, lots of water, exercise, and laughter helps. I am still in recovery, but one step and one day at a time. VBD: What's next for you? THERESA: I will publish the second book in October. Look out for the many surprises in it! I will introduce my clothing line in the sequel. Both of my degrees are in Fashion/Merchandising. I want to open a recording studio in Kansas City for the young adults of the inner city to release their concerns and pain through rap and other genres of music. I would love to go back to Tuskegee and teach; motivational classes would be included. One day, I hope God will send my husband to find me. I would love to adopt children! I will be traveling soon and settling back down in the South. I love the red clay dirt, the smell of the air, and the old buildings that represent our black history. I am intoxicated by the greatness, and this makes me stand tall in my spirit, always with my back straight. In closing, I salute women of every ethnicity, no one wears their name the way that you do.

Meet TeresaB.Howell Bestselling Author & CEO, TB Productions by Dr. Henritta Stewart

“A

nd one day she discovered that she was fierce, and strong, and full of fire, and that not even she could hold herself back because her passions burned brighter than her fears.” This poignant statement by Mark Anthony aptly describes Teresa B. Howell, CEO of TB Productions. Teresa graduated from North Carolina Central University with a BA in Psychology, MA in Special Education, and MSA in School Administration. It was in her earlier years of education that she discovered her craft. After taking an English class, one of her professors read a short story she created and encouraged her to write.

WRITING BECAME A THERAPEUTIC TOOL THAT HELPED ME GET THROUGH THE GRIEF. Today, Teresa is known for her riveting narratives that touch the heart and soul. Articles about her unique fiction writing have been published in The Huffington Post, CEO Magazine, UBAWA, The Herald Sun, The News and Observer, The Carolina Times, Urban Tymes, The People of Carolina newspaper and Strawberry Lit Magazine. Her accolades extend to being included in Diamonds Literary World's top 20 books in 2016, Conversations Magazine’s top 50 books in 2017, and being Sistahs Place Magazine’s 2017 Author pick of the year, ACHI Magazine's 2018 Author of the Year, ACHI Magazine's columnist of the year 2019, ACHI Magazine's Playwright of the year 2019, and Gospel Image Award's Inspirational Author of the Year 2019. But how does this entrepreneur wear so many hats— author, playwright, producer, and director, host, distributor, marketer, and promotions guru—and balance it all? When she faces challenges, what does she do to overcome them? Best of all, how can she help you to thrive and succeed in the arts? If you feel like you’re going down a

the Year and Playwright of the Year. My goal is to continue making the pen hot! I love writing and between my books and my published magazines, writing will eventually become my life.

VBD: Tell us about the services offered by TB Productions. TERESA: TB Productions is a marketing and entertainment company designed to help individuals in the arts department. We assist with four categories: Publishing, Music Distribution, Theater, and Film Production.

VBD: How do you balance it all? TERESA: I don’t. It’s all prayer and a good meal here and there. Sometimes, I want to pull my hair out and sometimes I sit in awe, thankful for all that God has blessed me with.

VBD: What is the inspiration behind the “Amplified Exposure Live” show? TERESA: It came to me in a dream in 2017. I saw myself sitting on a sofa and interviewing celebrities. When COVID-19 hit, my mentor from Sony Music said, “You should interview celebrities.” I remembered the dream and started in hot pursuit with launching the podcast. It centers on A-C list celebrities in music, theater, film, and literary works. VBD: Why did you create The Heat Seekers Magazine? TERESA: My Sony records mentor came up with the concept of interviewing indie artists on a podcast, so for two seasons, we interviewed several inspiring artists that wanted exposure. A light bulb went off and I said, “Maybe this will work even better as a publication.” So, the creation process began and since I already had eight sessions of “Amplified Exposure Live” with very well-known guests, it was not hard to get them to grace the cover each month. VBD: Tell us about your author life. TERESA: I was inspired to write through tragedy in 2015. I lost my grandmother and then a year later I lost my mother to brain cancer. Writing became a therapeutic tool that helped me get through the grief. I was inspired to write Christian Fiction with an edge of drama. With this concept my first book That Church Life was born. I was not expecting it to make any noise but within a year it sold over 10k copies. I did not list what I was doing at the time, but I will be forever grateful for the mentors that stepped in and helped me out. So far, I have five published books and four in the making. I hope to publish all four this year. I have five awards for Author of

VBD: What is the most important lesson you’ve learned since becoming an entrepreneur? TERESA: My very important lesson is to stay connected with your audience no matter what. Engage them in everything you do so that when big things happen, they will be right there to support you. I am thankful for all my followers who have stuck with me through the growing pains of each project. They have helped make all things possible for me.

I AM THANKFUL FOR ALL MY FOLLOWERS WHO HAVE STUCK WITH ME THROUGH THE GROWING PAINS OF EACH PROJECT. THEY HAVE HELPED MAKE ALL THINGS POSSIBLE FOR ME.

VBD: What strategies do you use to ensure that you thrive when challenges arise? TERESA: I count to 10 and start all over again. There is no other way but to have patience and remain calm if possible. VBD: What’s next for you? TERESA: I have slowed down on the talk shows a bit so that I can now travel. I will be traveling to several broadcasts this year and working with a few producers. I am a writer and producer of a film called Blue Magic: The Frank Lucas’s Story. I will be working on that in the fall of 2022 along with touring with a few music artists that are on my Sony Orchard distribution label. The play That Church Life 2 will also hit the stage winter 2022 in several cities in the North Carolina area. I’m sure I’m forgetting something. But this is my life.

“I

t’s a business, but it’s also a ministry,” says Shaneil McGawn-Francis, Founder and CEO of Yahweh’s Anointed Publishing (YAP). “We are making a global impact with books that have blessed many lives.”

As an entrepreneur, McGawn-Francis is certainly wired to win! She is a wife, mother of three, deaconess, author, speaker, authorship coach, mentor/life coach, and publisher. Her greatest motivation comes from knowing that the Lord who called her to this great work is faithful to see her through it. As an author, she wants her books “to benefit others” and as a publisher, she ensures that “books reach the hands of the intended readers.” We absolutely enjoyed hearing the vision that led to the establishment of YAP and the services offered. VBD: What was the inspiration behind the name of your business? SHANEIL: The inspiration behind the name of the business was nothing short of a divine experience. In 2017, I was seeking the Lord for a publisher for my first book. One day, while in the shower, I heard clearly “Yahweh’s Anointed Publishing, where your writing comes to life, one page at a time.” I got the name for what I thought was a publishing house, but my search proved futile because that name was non-existent. It was not until 2019 that I stepped out to register YAP as a business and began publishing for others. VBD: Tell us about the services offered by YAP. SHANEIL: Yahweh’s Anointed Publishing caters to the full publication process of books, and journals, both print and electronic. We offer consultation, editing of the manuscript, beautifully created cover designs, graphical work, illustrations, publishing on online publishing platforms such as Amazon Kindle and Paperback, assistance for book launch ideas, soft marketing, and other services that are tailored to the needs of the authors. As an author, I offer a writing coaching program called “Birthing the Author Within” which enables me to play the role of a midwife in ensuring that the book(s) the Lord has

VBD: What is your advice for building a strong relationship between a publisher and an author? SHANEIL: Like any other relationship, a publisher and an author can build a strong relationship through communication. As the authors eagerly await their masterpiece, communication ensures that they are aware of the process and progress, as their involvement is critical. VBD: What hurdle did you have to overcome to become a publisher and how has your life changed since becoming one? SHANEIL: My greatest hurdle was the initial lack of knowledge in the area. This gave me the opportunity to broaden my knowledge as the Lord guided me, connected me with the right people and materials to develop my expertise, so that His agenda can be accomplished. I feel I have been given a

A CAREER IN MEDICINE

VBD Magazine is delighted to feature Dr. Dwaine Cooke, a Consultant Neurosurgeon. He shares the inspiration behind his career choice, details about a groundbreaking surgery he performed, and how he thrives during challenging times. “At different points in my life, I had entertained doing Art, Architecture, or Accounting,” Dr. Cooke admits. “In medical school, a few of my professors encouraged me to pursue internal medicine as they thought that I had good clinical examination skills, patience, and knowledge that were crucial to that specialty. But I always knew I had the hands of a surgeon.” Obedient to his calling, Dr. Cooke is a testament to the resilience of the medical

West Indies, Mona, where he completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree in 2005 and Doctor of Medicine in Neurosurgery in 2016, with multiple distinctions and honors. He has obtained fellowship training in pediatric and adult neuro-oncology, neurovascular disorders, and epilepsy surgery at Halifax Health Sciences in Nova Scotia, Canada. In addition, he has completed an Epilepsy Surgery fellowship training at Yale University, Connecticut, USA.

EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND Dr. Cooke was born in Westmoreland, Jamaica. After graduating from the Manning’s School, he attended the University of the

At a young age, Dr. Cooke knew he wanted to practice medicine. “Both my mother and father had medical issues that required frequent visits to the hospital or to the doctor’s office,” Dr. Cooke reveals. “This helped me to develop a caring attitude from a young age. Also, I was curious about how the body works, so I read any material I could get my hands on to fulfill this curiosity. My mom had a book called A Medical Guide for the Home, which piqued my interest when I was around seven years old. I started looking at the pictures in the book, but eventually started reading about medical conditions with keen interest. Interestingly, in high school I participated in the renowned Schools’ Challenge Quiz

Match, and when it was my turn to introduce myself, I told them that I will become a Neurosurgeon, as if predicting the future. The brain and neurological systems are so complex, that we continue to discover information about them. It provides that challenge that pushes me to want to know more. I chose a surgical specialty mostly because I can see a problem that I could technically fix.” PERFORMING SURGERIES Neurosurgery is a demanding field and as expected, Dr. Cooke has performed thousands of surgeries during his surgical training and professional years. “I enjoy doing all neurosurgeries. Working on the brain and spinal cord can be a nerve-wracking experience, so I perform surgeries with caution, patience, skill, and temperance.”

54

Dr. Cooke treats multiple diseases affecting the brain and spine including tumors, head injuries, seizures, intracranial bleeding, back pain, and nerve pain. He specializes in epilepsy surgery, which seeks to surgically remove tumors and other causes of seizures that are unresponsive to regular treatment. Depending on where he practices, he performs certain surgeries more often than others. “From my experience in Jamaica, trauma to the head contributes significantly to our surgical numbers. But I also perform surgeries for brain and spine tumors, bleeds, and degenerative diseases of the spine, such as a slipped disc.” Dr. Cooke also does neurosurgical consultation with other physicians and offers emergency services for head injuries, bleeding in the brain, injuries to the spine, aneurysm

ruptures, spinal disc herniations, seizures, strokes with brain swelling, hydrocephalus, severe sudden headaches, and brain and spine infections, among others. WORKING HIS CALLING In June 2020, Dr. Cooke led the medical team that successfully performed a groundbreaking brain surgery on Marjorie Pearson at the Kingston Public Hospital. “It was great to be a part of that team. This experience opened our eyes to see that we have the mindset and skill to perform difficult tasks if we work as a team.” Traditionally, patients are offered all the different treatment options available for a certain problem. In Marjorie’s case, a tumor was sitting on the brain over the area that controls speech. Leaving it alone

VBD Magazine was not an option because it was causing her speech to be intermittently affected as the tumor was irritating her brain. While removing the tumor was clearly the solution, the surgery could have caused a complete loss of her ability to speak. “We could have done the procedure while Marjorie was asleep using a local anesthetic and then waking her up at the end of the surgery and checking her speech. However, this would have been too risky as it would have been too late. We decided to

do the surgery with Marjorie fully awake, allowing us to communicate with her throughout the procedure and administer tests that reassured us that everything was going well.

of the procedure brought joy to many as Marjorie’s speech was successfully preserved and her ability to sing maintained.”

We prepared for this surgery by having team meetings to discuss how the procedure would be performed and all the medications and equipment that would be required. We had several sessions with the patient to explain what is required and to keep her level of motivation high. The success

“Growing up as the only boy in my household in the district of Lennox Bigwoods, Jamaica, meant that I had responsibilities for raising goats, feeding chickens, and fetching water from the community pond or tank. After that, I had to walk 3 miles to school and back.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES

Being the only male child in my family, it was normal to find a skill from a very young age, and probably not finish school. I’m thankful for a supportive family who insisted that I completed high school and get into a college. My mother and I used to attend the town’s market twice weekly to peddle our wares and sometimes, I missed school. When I started Manning’s School, a high school, my mom decided to relieve me of that responsibility. Every step of the way, the Lord opened doors to resolve my difficulties. Attending university was not something I could afford, but I kept working hard and was rewarded with the Government Exhibition Scholarship to pursue my studies at the University of the West Indies (UWI). I’m grateful that my hard work at the UWI did not go unnoticed. There, I was granted the Jamaica Flour Mills Scholarship and the Linda and Harvey Gellman Award. The latter I received after going to Canada as the UWI representative. I have been fortunate to train and work with many amazing people including neurosurgeons, both locally and internationally (Canada, USA, UK, Caribbean, and Italy). Today, I’m all about building others. I try to impart knowledge to whomever I can, whenever the opportunity presents itself. While there are resource limitations in Jamaica, I do the best I can with what is available. My goal is to see an Epilepsy Surgery program established in the Caribbean and neurosurgery evolve to a first world standard.”

VBD Magazine

LITERARYSTORY COVER DEN ADVICE TO ASPIRING NEUROSURGEONS “Most neurosurgeons can probably identify what initially attracted them to their specialty, so know and understand your ‘why.’ As with any medical profession, compassion and responsiveness are necessary since you will be interacting with people who are worried about their health. A strong work ethic is important in all medical specialties and neurosurgery is no exception. You will need to be proficient in problem-solving skills and have great amounts of patience and physical strength. The field of neurosurgery demands extensive education and training. All in all, it can take over 14 years to become a neurosurgeon, which includes completing the educational requirements, residencies, and fellowships. However, it is rewarding as you help patients recover from devastating neurological diseases. Also, it is worth the investment in terms of knowledge acquired and remuneration. During this period of acquiring your education and training is when most of your friends are excelling in their family lives. It can be discouraging at times because of the personal sacrifices in terms of relationships and hobbies. Nevertheless, keep working hard, hold your head high, and keep your eye on the prize as it will be worth it in the end.” BALANCING CAREER WITH OTHER COMMITMENTS “Having spent so many years studying, I thought that ‘life’ would start after completing my education and training, but it’s quite the contrary, you’re always on the go. However, I’m blessed to enjoy what I do so it doesn’t become a burden. I take time for my family, and we plan our travel adventures.” ADJUSTING TO THE NEW NORMAL We are all adjusting to the new normal caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, but Dr. Cooke is no stranger to this. As a phy-

56

sician, he is always mindful of infectious organisms that exist in the surroundings. “We have utilized measures to protect ourselves and even more importantly our patients. Hand hygiene, wearing of personal protective equipment such as a face mask, vaccination, and isolation of infectious personnel, are all principles that existed to minimize spread. It was no surprise that these were instituted in some form or the other in the general population to help reduce the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. I continue to practice these necessary principles, as the fight extends from beyond

the hospital to my household and other social environments. I conduct my daily activities with extreme caution, knowing that my health will directly affect my family and patients.” ON THE HORIZON “The sky is the limit for me. I will continue to keep a level head and seek out ways to improve myself and my work, while ensuring that the future is better by passing on my knowledge to the next generation. I desire to see brain and spine surgeries be more easily accessible to all, no matter their class status or background, so I’m working towards that goal.”

OVID-19 has affected all of us in one way or another. That’s why it is now more important than ever that we take care of ourselves, mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Two areas of our lives that have probably been most affected during this time are the mental and physical aspects of our health. Obesity was already an epidemic prior to the pandemic, however, on average, people have gained approximately 15 pounds during this time. You may have heard of this as “the COVID-15.”

On the other side of the spectrum, we have seen the rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide dramatically increase during this time. With the isolation, quarantines, remote work, and untraditional celebrations, it has been very difficult for people.

result, our minds and muscles are fatigued. So make sure you are getting 7-8 hours of sleep every night. Get a sleep routine, just like a baby, doing the same regimen nightly so your body and mind knows that it’s time to relax.

Here are 3 ways to improve your physical and mental health during a difficult time.

2. Stay Active Physical activity is not just good for the body. It’s just as good for the mind. When we exercise, we have an increase in “happy hormones” that elevate our mood. At the same time, activity has been shown to increase our longevity and quality of life. Working out 30-45 minutes daily 4-5 times weekly will change your life physically

1. Get Your Beauty Rest We have all heard this phrase, but it’s so true. Poor sleep can affect our memory, our energy, and our metabolism. When we don’t sleep well, our brains and bodies don’t get the time to rest that it needs. As a

and mentally. Don’t forget to mix it up a little with cardio and weights. 3. Make Time to Communicate More than ever, it has become easier to communicate with technology allowing us to see our friends and family via video. However, even with all these variations to communicate, people get busy. Schedules don’t match up. People prefer to text rather than to call someone else. But there is something innate in us that needs to hear someone’s voice and to feel someone’s touch. Make sure you are communicating with a loved one on a daily basis. Make sure you are taking time out to have a meal or watch a movie with a friend. We all need to decompress. We all need to be supported. ABOUT DR. MUSIELAK Dr. Delene P. n pediatrics, our patients are oftentimes the patients and their families. Recognizing the complexity of these interactions is extremely important and can translate to positive health outcomes in children. Parents should share any financial, housing, or access to care obstacles experienced with their child's pediatrician. There are many programs to assist with social determinants of health for parents and children alike.”

I am a board-certified pediatrician and current fellow in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine whose career and research interests include understanding population health, health equity, and evaluating health system strategies to improve quality of pediatric care and child health outcomes after pediatric intensive care unit (ICU) hospitalizations. During my training, I developed and spearheaded advocacy and health-equity curricula for pediatric residents and nurse practitioners. These were designed to improve the quality of healthcare delivery for local and global medically underserved populations through various initiatives, partnerships with community-based organizations, and initiating conversations with state and local representatives regarding proposed legislation affecting children and families. I have led and substantially contributed to programs and studies on contributing factors to health disparities and community-based interventions to reduce disparities among vulnerable populations. Currently, I serve as a Fellow Liaison in the Pediatric Diversity and Inclusion Council at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, partnering with fellowship program leadership and faculty to develop a curriculum geared toward the professional and career development of underrepresented fellow trainees. I am also participating in research to examine the mental health outcomes of caregivers and patients after pediatric ICU admission and the screening tools which may improve quality of life and reduce morbidities attributable to healthcare economics.

he day to day has been and will be demanding. Demanding of our time, our energy, and our patience. Don’t think it has to be draining though and don’t think it has to be a grind. Take time away for your families and take time away for yourself, even if it's just stealing away for a moment to grab lunch. Cultivate a “don’t know” mindset and allow yourself to approach each experience like a kid, with wonder, awe, and curiosity, as if everything is new, and scary, and awesome. Sometimes, all three. TAKE CARE OF YOUR HEALTH Find ways to take care of your physical, spiritual, and emotional health. Eat a healthy, balanced diet, exercise, manage stress, get enough sleep, and go for regular medical check-ups. In residency, I got really sick. After months of daily nausea, aches, weight loss, and being drawn thin, I was diagnosed with systemic sarcoidosis, and sent to a circus of specialists. There was a point of pride that I had in showing up every day. I never called out. I never stopped. The patients, the children, entrusted to my care came first. Always.

My cardiologist was the first person to tell me I was foolish. And he said to me, “fine young doctor you’re making.” I was indignant. How dare he? He asked me more questions—how much did I sleep? How often was I tired, angry, and not enjoying things? When was the last time I cooked dinner for myself? When was the last time I had gone running? Nearly 18 months later, I realized what he was getting at. It wasn’t until I met my cardiologist, who informed me that without proper care sarcoidosis can harden my heart until it doesn't respond anymore. That challenged me so I went home and started running. That one lifestyle change helped to improve my health. SUPPORT FOR INITIATIVES I’d love to shout out the work the March of Dimes does for prematurity, and The

Examined Life Journal, a publication that is a forum for people in medicine to publish stories of life in, around, and adjacent to our often strange occupations. ABOUT DR. KEVIN MCKIM I am an East Coast kid at heart. Living in California and having winters without snow still doesn’t feel right, even after I’ve been out here for a bit. Granted, I don’t mind the sunshine. I grew up in Massachusetts, and went to college, at first, for marine biology in Maine. I transitioned over to pre-med, and after graduating worked for 2 years in Boston at the Ragon Institute for HIV research, working on projects exploring why some people were immune to infection by the virus. I attended medical school at Temple University in Philadelphia, as a member of the inaugural class of the Saint Luke’s campus in Bethlehem, PA. Without my time at Saint Luke’s, I know I would not be the physician, or the person, I am today. I went on to residency at Cohens Children’s

Medical Center, Long Island, Queens, NY, to train as a pediatrician. My friends and family knew I would be a neonatologist before I did. The work was deeply satisfying, from the ICU care to the quieter moments of helping new parents burp their infants (they always tap too softly) or feedings (they always feed too much). Everyone heard my enthusiasm for the work, and it was no wonder I went on to a fellowship at Stanford in Perinatal-Neonatal medicine. There, I published research about systems to better measure changes in infants’ blood pressures, a case report about COVID-19 in neonates, and had my first short story, The Emu Wars, published in The Examined Life Journal. Most importantly, I met my fiancé, Lisa, in November 2019 in San Francisco, and got our Samoyed Belisarius together, whose relentless enthusiasm (and shedding) has forever changed our lives. TAKING THE LEAP & BUILDING WITH PURPOSE TAMMY AUSTIN, CEO OF JOURNEY’S END COUNSELING by Dr. Henritta Stewart

I

t all began in a staff meeting 19 years ago when Tammy Austin, CEO of Journey’s End Counseling (JEC), heard what sounded like an audible voice telling her that it was time to take a leap of faith and start her private practice. Concern and trepidation hit her as she tried to discern if she really heard from God.

“I had also received a prophecy from a woman with a prophetic ministry who was on a local Christian television channel,” Tammy tells us. “I phoned in a donation and a few days later, I received a cassette tape in the mail with the prophecy. In the message, I was told that the practice would be a healing place for many people and that courts would send people to JEC for help.” Following this, Tammy received a second prophecy at a women’s ministry event which confirmed that it was time to launch. There was only one thing to do: step out in faith. Tammy did just that. She left her job of 15 years and established JEC. In a candid conversation with VBD Magazine, Tammy shares her outlook on operating a successful business, mental health practice, and branching out into the literary world. Further, she reveals that the name Journey’s End Counseling signifies a place of rest after struggling with an issue, finding clarity, and gaining peace for the journey. “I’m on a mission to help all my clients experience rest and peace,” says Tammy. VBD: Tell us about the services offered by your business. TAMMY: The services offered include a mix of individual, couples, and family therapy. Individual therapy has been especially healing for women ages 25 and older who struggle with esteem, confidence, work/life balance and lost selves, mood disorders, and anxiety. For couples, we explore communication, conflict management, and emotional connection. Family therapy addresses challenges of blended families, parent-child conflict, and issues affecting healthy family functioning. Besides myself, there are two other licensed therapists and three pre-licensed therapists that work under supervision.

68

VBD Magazine VBD: What is the best way to improve our mental health? TAMMY: Some of my recommendations would first be to simply move. Have a structured routine and schedule, practice grace and self-compassion, feed your spirit, and explore and validate your feelings. Seek therapy when needed with a therapist who understands and “sees you.”

JOURNALING, EXERCISING, WALKING, AND PRACTICING MINDFULNESS HELP WITH SELF-AWARENESS AND CHECKING IN WITH ONESELF.

PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HAVEN I also created Therapy Unchained, my website for blogs, podcasts, and worksheets, and Virtual Date Nights, a monthly series for couples. I also launched It’s Just One Chapter for life, relationship, and parent coaching services, including a women’s group named, “I Rise: Evolving in 2022.” I am happy to see that more Black women have initiated therapy and are diving into the issues of Black trauma and our experience of living Black. VBD: As an author, what kind of legacy do you want to leave with your books? TAMMY: I want to be remembered for providing resources that support and validate growth and authentic and abundant living.

My currently pending works are 1) a couple’s workbook for emotional connection and intimacy, 2) a therapy journal to aid with the process of exploration, challenge, and growth and, 3) my first online course entitled “Conquering Your Inner Critic: Eight Weeks to Authentic Living” on Teachable. ABOUT TAMMY AUSTIN Tammy Austin is an entrepreneur, therapist, wife, and mother. She has been married to Andre Austin for 35 years. They have two daughters and most recently adopted a chocolate Labrador named Malachai. Tammy opened Journey’s End Counseling in 2003 and transitioned full time into her practice in 2006. In addition to therapy, Mrs. Austin is also a Qualified Clinical Supervisor and trains pre-licensed mental health counselors. She is a faith-based, trauma trained practitioner who brings clinical and spiritual perspectives into therapeutic work as expressed by the client.

VBD: Common mental health problems such as depression and anxiety have been on the rise since the COVID-19 pandemic. What steps should an individual take if he/she is feeling depressed? TAMMY: For many people, depression and anxiety were already on the forefront and were prevalent struggles. Here are my suggestions: • Talk about your feelings or fears. • Reach out and seek help. • Journaling, exercising, walking, and practicing mindfulness help with self-awareness and checking in with oneself. • Do not be fearful of medication, if it is recommended. To help overcome this, bring a friend to your appointment, ask questions, and follow up with your provider. VBD: How has the pandemic changed the way you live and operate your business? TAMMY: The pandemic made me slow down because I was honestly heading for burnout myself. I was able to slow down, trust and listen to God, and move my practice to a virtual platform. We are currently primarily virtual with limited in-person sessions: a hybrid model. Clients love the convenience of sessions that fit their schedules and routines and my session attendance rate is roughly 98%.

WANT TO BE REMEMBERED FOR PROVIDING RESOURCES THAT SUPPORT AND VALIDATE GROWTH AND AUTHENTIC AND ABUNDANT LIVING.

I AM HAPPY TO SEE THAT MORE BLACK WOMEN HAVE INITIATED THERAPY AND ARE DIVING INTO THE ISSUES OF BLACK TRAUMA AND OUR EXPERIENCE OF LIVING BLACK.

Tammy Austin is also a speaker and has facilitated sessions for women’s encounter groups, women’s health conferences, and the Central Florida International of Black Women’s Congress Red Dress Event. To aid with her own emotional health and wellbeing, Mrs. Austin is an avid cyclist who completed her goal of 2400 cycling miles in 2021. Additionally, she participates in half marathons and 5k races which support women’s issues and the Rock and Roll Series which promotes healthy lifestyles.

WORKING IN REVERSE

Why You Need a Career Development Plan

T

he best way to achieve a goal is to plan for it. If we want to get fit, we develop a diet and weight loss plan and exercise routine. If we want that well needed rest for our bodies, maybe we schedule some “me time” or a spa day. So if we want to be better professionally, why not create a career development plan? WHAT IS A CAREER DEVELOPMENT PLAN? This is simply a roadmap for your career with a destination, travel stops, and a starting point. It captures the goals you want to achieve and the actions you will do to get there. Notice that I wrote it in reverse. I believe this is the best approach to career development planning because we start with the end in mind. It is said that managers should have oneon-one meetings to create and monitor an employee’s career development plan. But suppose the last thing on your manager’s mind is helping you draft a plan that could

70

end with you leaving the company? Suppose you’re the manager? And what if you’re an entrepreneur or investor? We do not need to wait until someone decides to formulate a plan with us. We can take the initiative and begin writing one for ourselves. WHERE AM I GOING? Since we are working in reverse, let’s begin with the first of the three: the destination. This is the hardest part. But I have a reflection question that could help you think this through. “If you are 90 years old and you look back at your life, what would be your greatest professional regret?” Your answer to this question will tell you where you do not want to be. That way, you will know where you really want to be. If you know the answer to this question, what are you going to do about it? HOW DO I GET THERE? Zig Ziglar said, “If we aim at nothing, we will hit it every time.” This is why our roadmap will have travel stops along the

way. These are the specific goals we need to accomplish to arrive at our destination. The good thing is this part gets easier. We can search for someone who is in the career we desire and ask them what they did, research the necessary qualifications and experience, and make a budget. The ideas and options are endless, and you should be as creative as possible. WHERE AM I NOW? We are at the easiest and final part of the career development plan process. Take an honest look at your current position, industry, and area of focus. Assess your strengths and weaknesses and everything you bring to the table. Write it all down. Your current position is the result of past lessons and achievements. In the words of Danielle LaPorte, “Pull over to the side of your journey and look how far you’ve come.” You’re at a great place! Now is the time to take responsibility and be intentional with your choices for your career and professional development.

A HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN

H

ealth insurance is one of the most crucial, yet most confusing and expensive benefits offered to individuals. Health insurance is for the what ifs; it takes care of the unexpected. It is a known fact that one can look healthy but not be completely healthy, or you may be healthy but have an accident caused by a careless driver or by your own carelessness. People insure their homes, vehicles, and pets against unexpected events, so why not their health? Having coverage: a. Improves access to care which improves health outcomes. b. Helps to better manage chronic conditions. c. Reduces financial burden and risks. Healthcare Landscape 2020 changed the healthcare landscape when COVID-19 landed on our doorsteps. The costs associated with hospitalizations related to COVID-19 were astronomical. Due to job losses, there is now a greater risk of more people losing their health insurance. Further research from the Urban Institute shows that Medicaid enrollment has risen substantially since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic with 9 million signing up from February 2020 to January 2021. Medical Plans The three most common medical insurance plans are HMO, POS, and PPO. When choosing a medical plan, consider your current medical and financial status, and the flexibility you desire. 1. HEALTH MAINTENANCE ORGANIZATION (HMO) Advantages: • Lower premiums than Point of Service (POS) and Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans. • Usually don’t have deductibles – mostly it has copays which are for office visits, medical tests, and prescriptions. • Focuses on wellness and preventive care.

Disadvantages: • Does require a primary care physician (PCP) to “coordinate” care. • No out-of-network care (special allowances usually given when travelling). • Tight controls can make it more difficult to get specialized care. Inference: • Opt for this benefit if your PCP and other providers are in the network, you don’t see many specialists and don’t need referrals often, cost is more important than flexibility, and if you want to pay as little as possible and not face high deductibles.

2. POINT OF SERVICE (POS) Advantages: • Does not require a PCP and is a mirror image of HMO if you stay in-network. • Has flexibility to stay in or go out-ofnetwork. • No deductibles when you choose to use network providers. Disadvantages: • Premium is higher than an HMO. • Out-of-network is costlier because you may be subjected to balance billing (defined in definitions below). • Has higher deductibles than HMO and PPO.

73

• Co-insurance – the percentage you pay after you have met your allowed deductible. • Out of pocket limits – the total amount of money you pay for deductibles, copayments, and co-insurance before the medical plan pays 100% of covered benefits. • Balance billing – difference between the provider’s charge and the contracted amount (mostly happens when individuals see out-of-network physicians). Medical insurance coverage is important so you must get coverage in a plan that is right for you and your family. This could mean the difference between frustration and peace of mind.

References U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. (n.d) Glossary of terminologies. Retrieved from Healthcare.gov. Inference: • Opt for this plan if you don’t mind filling out forms when care is out-of-network, if you want the flexibility of going out of network like a PPO, and don’t mind paying the higher out-of-pocket fees when you go out of network. 3.PREFERRED PROVIDER ORGANIZATION (PPO) Advantages: • Has a very large network with choice of any provider. • Enrollees can utilize out of network services and do not need referrals for specialists. • Out-of-pocket costs are generally limited.

74

Disadvantages: • Higher premiums than HMO and POS. • Must meet a deductible before payment for care. Inference: • Opt for this benefit if you utilize physicians and specialists regularly and do not want to get referrals. HEALTH INSURANCE TERMS According to healthcare.gov, here are the definitions of some everyday terms: • Deductibles – the amount you pay out of pocket before your insurance plan starts to pay. • Co-payments – a fixed amount you pay for service.

PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HAVEN EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND I work as a nurse practitioner in the Anesthesia Department at NYU Langone, mainly in the PACU setting. I have thirteen years of nursing experience with a clinical background in the Neurosurgical ICU; six of those years as a nurse practitioner. I am a board-certified nurse practitioner in Acute Care and Family Health. I completed my Master’s in Nursing at Molloy College and Post Master’s Certificate at the University of Pennsylvania. I also have a degree in Human Biology, which I received from the State University of New York at Albany. I am currently pursuing a Ph.D. in nursing and health care policy at Molloy College. My dissertation research focuses on developing a standardized screening tool for human trafficking victim identification by the health care provider. GOAL My goal is to empower all staff members in the health care setting from intake until discharge. I have hopes of one day working for a federal agency so that I can be instrumental in policies that improve healthcare in this country and abroad, especially healthcare disparities among immigrant populations.

THINK BIG & CHASE YOUR DREAMS SHANEKE PRYCE, MSN, ACNPC-AG, FNP-C, CCRN Committed to improving our healthcare policy by Dr. Henritta Stewart

N

urse practitioner Shaneke Pryce is working towards fulfilling her dream of enhancing our healthcare policy. To rise to the occasion, Pryce completed a Master’s in Nursing and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in nursing and healthcare policy.

“My advice to anyone wanting to pursue studies in nursing and healthcare policy would be to go for it. The world needs change agents to advocate for individuals.

As one of the largest groups in healthcare, nurses have the numbers to produce and affect change,” says Pryce. Committed to making a difference, Pryce is practicing physician-level care while bringing a comprehensive perspective and personal touch to her patients. It was great to chat with Pryce about her reasons for pursuing a Ph.D. in nursing and healthcare policy, balancing her studies with other commitments, and dealing with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES The biggest challenge I have had to overcome is time management in balancing work, school, and personal life. Although I love to procrastinate and put things off, I have found that making a to-do list and checklist is most beneficial. I set goals for the day and try my best to accomplish them. I find that it is best to be realistic and not overwhelm myself. THE EFFECTS OF COVID-19 As for many healthcare providers, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the landscape in how we provide care and view infectious diseases. At the beginning of the pandemic, we saw surgeries cease and the entire hospital becoming COVID-19 wards. This virus spread across the globe infecting millions in a matter of months. It is very important for everyone to stay the course, continue social distancing, and take precautionary measures.

Guarding Your Heart

FOR A HEALTHIER YOU by Stacy-Lee Abrahams

E

xercise, eat healthy, and quit smoking are just a few of the great tips your doctor would likely give at the end of a cardiovascular visit. I think “manage your emotions” would be a great addition to that list. The way we react to life’s experiences signals that our minds and hearts are directly connected, and that we must be able to guard our hearts to prevent our thoughts from sabotaging our health. Guarding our hearts is a biblical truth which we are encouraged to obey. “Above all else, guard your heart because everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23 NKJV) SOMETIMES, THE FEAR OF BEING ALONE CAUSES US TO PUT THE UNHEALTHY CHOICE OF ACCEPTING THINGS THAT ARE SELF-DESTRUCTIVE OVER THE HEALTHIER OPTION OF SELF-PRESERVATION. Guarding our hearts is the purposeful act of shielding our minds and bodies from negative influences, toxic behaviors, and thoughts that are just not life-giving. However, this does not permit us to hide behind walls and become anti-social, cold, and distant, nor should it foster fear of taking risks in building relationships. When we speak of the heart, we are referring to our emotional center where feelings, thoughts, and reasoning dwell. Our thoughts control our attitudes, attitudes lead to actions, and these actions determine our

76

achievements. Unfortunately, our thoughts are developed from encounters and experiences which are not always positive, and while negative emotions can create enough discomfort to lead us in making some necessary personal adjustments, they can also find ways to dwell in our hearts and affect our lives and livelihood. GUARDING OUR HEARTS IS THE PURPOSEFUL ACT OF SHIELDING OUR MINDS AND BODIES FROM NEGATIVE INFLUENCES, TOXIC BEHAVIORS, AND THOUGHTS THAT ARE JUST NOT LIFE-GIVING. The truth is that we may not be able to control our feelings in certain situations, but we can learn to connect the brain with our heart, and in so doing control our reactions. The extent to which we can control our emotions will not only guard our heart but also have a positive impact on our health and by extension the way we execute our jobs, attend to our families, and relate to our friends. As we put this into practice, here are a few tips: 1. Take time to assess how people around you affect your thoughts, actions, attitude, mood, and the decisions you make. Choose your friends wisely and ensure there is substance in all your relationships. 2. Believe in your independence. Sometimes, the fear of being alone causes us to put the unhealthy choice of accepting

things that are self-destructive over the healthier option of self-preservation. 3. Stay alert. Seemingly innocent comments or jokes drenched in negativity can over time seed doubt, worry, confusion, anger, and eventually a full-grown tree of depression. 4. Find your center. Often, we become fixated on what is happening around us and engage in negative thoughts which become difficult to control. Being centered means having a positive reference for those days when the emotions and stress of life takes you off balance. 5. Seek good advice. When stuck in an emotional rut, turn to someone you trust and respect. This could be a positive family member or friend, a spiritual leader, or a psychologist, if there is a need for professional help. We are never too experienced to learn. BEING CENTERED MEANS HAVING A POSITIVE REFERENCE FOR THOSE DAYS WHEN THE EMOTIONS AND STRESS OF LIFE TAKES YOU OFF BALANCE. In continuing the journey of personal development, we must pay attention to our emotional intelligence which includes learning to guard our heart. When we are effective in guarding our hearts, we are better able to manage our emotions, make healthier decisions, and live in peace with ourselves and others.

ehydration can range from mild to severe and it affects the homeostasis of your body. Dehydration can be recognized many times because it could be accompanied by thirst that is not relieved by drinking water. This can be caused by medications, too much caffeine, salt, garlic, or soy sauce, excessive alcohol, dry climate, and high altitudes. Certain medications like Metformin can also be implicated.

THE DANGERS OF DEHYDRATION At times, you only need to make sure you’ve had sufficient water intake. If you know you have had sufficient water and you are still feeling thirsty, you may be suffering from some form of dehydration. Dehydration can be dangerous and can lead to a heart attack, cause you to pass out, and could even cause death. An article by Consumer Reports published in the Washington Post on August 13, 2017, states, “A lack of sufficient fluid in the body can temporarily cause confusion and put you at risk for falls. When severe, dehydration can lead to a rapid or irregular heart rate, low blood pressure, fainting, and even death. ’How much water you have affects every body system,’ says Jodi Stookey, an epidemiologist in San Francisco.” HYDRATION MIX FORMULA Here is a simple hydration mix you can make almost anywhere:

YOU COULD BE DEHYDRATED AND NOT KNOW IT by Damaris Nightingale

78

CASE IN POINT This is a simple mixture that I used to save my mother’s life, literally. I jumped into action as soon as I had arrived at her home on a late evening flight. My mother is a diabetic and was suffering from severe dehydration, due in part to some medications. She was feeling extremely thirsty and was drinking a lot of water which was further diluting all the minerals in her body.

SNEAKY DEHYDRATION

In a 12-ounce glass of water add a pinch of salt, about a ¼ teaspoon. This mixture should taste like tears, so slightly salty. To this add about 1 teaspoon of sugar or any sweetener. Drink and notice how your thirst is relieved almost immediately.

When I saw my mother, my heart sank into the bottom of my stomach, but I forced myself to maintain a joyful and positive attitude. My mother had signs of severe dehydration. She looked totally dried up and had these jerky, spastic movements, cracked lips, and ashy skin. I made sure that Mama drank approximately 64 ounces of my homemade hydration mixture each day to hasten her recovery. In addition, I started relating family stories that I know would be amusing to my mother. The saying “Laughter is the best medicine,” has been attributed to Henri Mondeville, a 1300s professor of surgery who used post-operative humor therapy to help his patients’ recovery. So next time you are dealing with a sick loved one, try injecting them with a little humor. Healing has a lot to do with our mental and

emotional state. Although well-meaning, the last thing a sick person needs is your tears and mournful sighs. Instead, shower a sick person with love and cover him/her with hope and little laughter. Thankfully, Mama started to feel better immediately and by the third day she was almost fully recovered. The spastic jerky movements were almost gone, and the excessive thirst, dry lips, and ashy skin were all gone. I sometimes become dehydrated from coffee or eating or traveling to a place with high altitude. I recognize it as dehydration because my thirst is not relieved by drinking water, and my throat feels a bit dry. You already guessed! I drink a glass of sugar, salt, and water. This solution usually makes me feel more alert and takes away that excessive thirst.

re you searching for love in all the wrong places? As cliched as this might sound, it reflects the painful reality of many unhappy and disappointed Christian women. Fortunately, your search is over, thanks to Dr. Velma Bagby, a certified relationship coach and Bible teacher, who has been happily married for almost 50 years and faithfully served in Christian ministry for 35 years. She is a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC) and has helped numerous women find rewarding godly relationships.

Further, Dr. Bagby is an award-winning author of Christian fiction/creative nonfiction, co-author with her granddaughter on her children’s books, an ordained Minister (Th.D.), and Speaker. She is the CEO of Adoni Publishing LLC and has a passion for writing about the Christian experience. God is at the forefront of everything she does in ministry, writing, and in serving others. In her first book, Dr. Bagby detailed conversations about men between a mother and her daughters. In her upcoming release The Catch No One Wants, she explores dating and marriage through the eyes of a father and his daughter. The book will be eye-opening and valuable for women who want to discover the husband they deserve through intentional dating.

Dr. Velma Bagby is no stranger to VBD Magazine because she is one of our prolific contributing writers. You will certainly not want to miss what this woman of God has shared exclusively with us. VBD: What inspired your first book? VELMA: Your Adam is Asleep Until God Opens His Eyes was based on my conversations with my adult daughters about men. Each time we had a discussion, they shared it with friends. The friends, in turn, wanted to know more, and my daughters saw the interest. They suggested I write the book, and the rest was history. VBD: Tell us about your upcoming book. VELMA: I’m excited about my upcoming release which is set for April 22, 2022. The

story is about Greyson Dawson and his daughter Veronica. It tells of his frustration as a father, watching his daughter’s obsession with getting married. It reveals how she is looking for love in all the wrong places in a frantic search for a husband, leaving a trail of hurt and brokenness. Frustrated, Greyson seeks God’s direction. Greyson’s answered prayers prompt him to use what he knows as an expert fisherman. He sees the behavioral similarities between men and fish, so he invents five metaphorical stories he shares with his daughter on their

trip. Four stories represent the men she has dated: the Catfish, who enjoys hanging around garbage, the Salmon who does not want to get caught, the Sturgeon who likes to nibble, and the Pufferfish, who is beautiful until agitated—and they all highlight the dating mistakes his daughter continues making even now. While the fifth story—the Goldfish, represents the husband she deserves… the man God has chosen just for her. He is “The CATCH No One Wants,” and he is standing right in front of her.

LOVE ZONE VBD: What’s one thing you’d want your readers to remember after they read this book? VELMA: My Aunt had a saying which says, “Something beats a blank.” In terms of this book's topic, our “something” is the scripture we have been given, and without it, we have a blank (nothing). There is a reason God gave us over sixty scriptures describing the behavior of a fool, warnings not to associate with them, not to become one, and not marry a fool. Use the wisdom we have been given, the tools to help assess who you are dating, and date with an intent (goal) to marry. Trust that this will help you date wisely and safely. VBD: As an award-winning author, what advice would you give to an aspiring author who is hesitant to start writing? VELMA: Discover the reason for the hesitancy. Encourage yourself, read “how-to” books or take a class to help you understand writing rules. Become familiar with the genre you have chosen. Join Facebook groups related to your topic and establish relationships with fellow authors. VBD: For the authors who decided to start, how can they overcome ‘writer’s block’? VELMA: Writing has seasons. There is a season to rest and step away from writing— writing block. There are seasons of plenty where you are full of ideas and inspired to write on topics you are passionate about. And there are seasons where you must be poured into—through training, classes, et cetera. So, pay attention to your writing seasons.

VBD: Now for the published authors, what steps should they take to build their reading community? VELMA: Everything concerning our lives as authors centers around relationships. Your reading community includes influencers, fellow authors, promoters, and those who are readers only. Take your time to get to know them. Connect based on your genre, join groups related to your topic, acknowledge, and comment on their posts and add them to your social media. VBD: We’re going to now switch to your role of relationship coach. What is the greatest part about being one? VELMA: It is when I see the insights I have been given to share and how it shines light in the heart of those who need this wisdom. It’s then I know that what I have been given to share touched that life. VBD: Why should someone make an investment in a relationship coach? VELMA: Growing up, we had a senior family member who exuded wisdom. In my case, my senior Aunt served as our family coach. Like the author with writer’s block, if we found ourselves stuck and unsure of the direction to move forward or if we

found ourselves repeating the same mistakes, whatever the situation—we sought wise guidance from the family’s senior members. The slow demise of the family unit created a void of seniors available to us now, and the coach is simply assuming their role—to impart wisdom to those seeking guidance. VBD: What’s one of the blessings you’re most grateful for in your own relationship? VELMA: I am most grateful that I had the sense to keep God at the forefront from the beginning. He has guided and directed our path and, in doing so, helped us to overcome the challenges of maintaining a blessed marriage of 48 years. VBD: If you could give one relationship advice to your younger self, what would it be? VELMA: Ask God to change what you need changing and trust the God in your husband to do the same in his life.

I

LOVE ZONE n our society, we are conditioned to make regular or yearly appointments for what we call check-ups or wellness checks. In some cases, you even get good incentives for doing so.

Well, today, I want to remind you that your marriage requires check-ups. I’m not talking about the long conversations you have after you’ve been wronged or the heated arguments you get into after an infraction or marriage violation. See, some of these very things have occurred because you forgot, neglected, or even decided that your marriage had no need for a yearly, monthly, weekly, or daily checkup. I find it oddly strange that some people will neglect this important process, when even Satan himself does daily and routine checkups on you. He is described as a thief, and his objective, to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10), never waivers nor changes. So, once you understand this, it is your responsibility to make sure that your marriage is intact. Okay, Pastor Scroggins, I see where you’re going with this. However, I don’t know who we would go to as a couple to institute these wellness checkups or even how they are performed? That’s why I’m here. The Bible is so resoundingly efficient when it comes to marriage and there is not a physician on earth more educated than the greatest physician of all…The Father. My first advice to you would be, study the Word of God for clear directives for marriage.

Photo by Nevels Media on Unsplash

Based upon a few of the Scriptures, the Father would say to you both as the physician performing a routine checkup:

THE MARRIAGE

CHECK-UP by Pastor Danyelle Scroggins

• Is your marriage held in honor? Hebrews 13:4 • Are you loving one another the proper way? 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 & Ephesians 5:25 • Are you adhering to conjugal rights of one another? 1 Corinthians 7:1-40 • Do you both know your position? 1 Peter 3:7 • Can you see the results of the Lord’s favor upon you? Proverbs 18:22

Right there, I’ve answered the who (The Father) and the how (The Scriptures) your marriage checkup can be performed. Now, my doctors always say to me that preventive maintenance is the greatest source for living a well and whole life. As for me, I believe in making sure I’m staying on top of things when it concerns my health. The same efforts I put forward in health wholeness, I must also do the same things for marriage wellness or wholeness. I hope you see where I’m going with this. If you are not doing the things that are required to keep your marriage healthy, don’t expect it to be. I must disclose these things because we are held accountable for the things we know. I found that these are some of the best medicines or maintenance tools for marriage: • Communication, which involves disclosing and exposing all emotional, physical, or spiritual situations and full talks in what we consider as no judgment zones. • Forgiving, which will forever be a method to counteract any madness. • Love, that covers all faults and is the foundation of a God-ordained marriage. • Sex, the act of connection that explores the institution’s spiritual alignment.

Now, if you’ve been neglecting your marriage checkups, today is a great day to start implementing them into your marriage. Only you know how often your checkups are needed, but I can tell you at the beginning, you must implement them a lot until your marriage health is excellent. The healthier your marriage is, the less you’ll have to do checkups. But just know you’ll forever be responsible for having them.

NURSING SHORTAGES & THE RISE OF TRAVEL NURSES MEET TRAVEL NURSE

Toni-Ann Miller by Icylin Morgan

A

re you a registered nurse who could do with a change of scenery? If so, it may be time to consider becoming a travel nurse. The COVID-19 pandemic created a nursing shortage and as a result there is a surge in demand for travel nurses. If you enjoy getting to know people and taking in new sights, then take this leap to build your nursing career.

INSPIRATION OASIS

In 2020, the ICU that I worked in was at capacity, so we eventually had to open makeshift ICUs elsewhere in the hospital. We were understaffed, yet we still tried to give the best care that we possibly could.

VBD: What was the experience like? TONI-ANN: This experience has been life-changing. The good thing about nursing and being specifically trained for a certain area is that it is the same everywhere. I have the opportunity to visit states and countries that I could only dream of while working. You could call it a working vacation if you wish. VBD: What is next for you? TONI-ANN: Currently, my eyes are set on medical school, which has been my dream for as long as I can remember. At this time, I am in the process of applying to Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Programs across the country. Luckily, I have had the chance to experience medicine from the eyes and hands of doctors, and this knowledge will set the foundation to eventually be a physician.

While traveling nurses are usually employed on a short-term basis, you will gain valuable experience and the opportunity can be rewarding. Ready to get started? Check out our interview with Toni-Ann Miller, a travel nurse. VBD: Why did you choose nursing? TONI-ANN: I chose nursing as a career because I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives daily. When you come into the hospital sick, you are generally feeling at your worst. Nurses are who you correspond and bond with the most while treating your ailments. I have the opportunity to visit states and countries that I could only dream of while working. You could call it a working vacation if you wish.

VBD: Why did you choose Critical Care as your specialty? TONI-ANN: I wanted to work in a specialty that would challenge me mentally, emotionally, and physically and Critical Care is just that. Critical thinking is a learned ability, and it enables us to treat quickly and prevent adverse outcomes. Working in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is difficult; however, it is especially rewarding when we get to see patients who had a 20% chance for a good quality of life walk out of our doors, happy, healthy, and grateful. VBD: What has your experience been working in the Intensive Care Unit during the pandemic? TONI-ANN: The COVID-19 pandemic increased ICU admissions, which left us overworked and stressed our emotional capacity. In 2020, the ICU that I worked

in was at capacity, so we eventually had to open makeshift ICUs elsewhere in the hospital. We were understaffed, yet we still tried to give the best care that we possibly could. Patients were constantly dying as we tried to understand this virus, how it presents, and how to treat it. We cried with families daily as they grieved their loved ones, while trying to have a positive attitude for our other patients fighting. We gave it our all 24/7. VBD: Who is a Travel Nurse? TONI-ANN: Travel nurses are registered nurses that choose to work short-term contracts, usually from about three weeks to several months, at hospitals all over the country. This began as a response to a national nursing shortage, but some nurses like myself use this as a medium to travel the country and expand our nursing knowledge.

ABOUT TONI-ANN MILLER Toni-Ann Miller was born and raised in St. Ann, Jamaica, where she attended St. Hilda’s Diocesan High School. She later earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Charleston Southern University in Charleston, South Carolina. As an Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurse, she monitors and administers treatment to the most critical patients. When she isn’t at work, she can be found at the beach or exploring each city that she visits.

INSPIRATION OASIS

5 Ways

TO MAXIMIZE YOUR PEACE by Shanita Rowsey

Here are 5 practical ways to maximize your peace: 1. DETOX YOUR SPIRIT Oftentimes, persons carry their burdens and the burdens of others, without giving the load to God. To maximize your peace, you must release what you are holding. Learn to let go. Learn to cleanse your mind and heart of everything that is not giving you peace. Sometimes, detoxing your spirit looks like forgiving someone. Finding peace involves making peace. 2. SPEND TIME WITH GOD Isaiah 26:3 (KJV) says, “Thou will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee, because he trusts in thee.” When you take your focus off God, you lose your sense of peace. Make an effort to spend time with God for comfort, guidance and peace. His presence makes the difference. 3. LEARN TO SAY NO Limit your commitments. Sometimes, you can create your own chaos by overcommitting yourself which causes you to feel overwhelmed. Focus only on the things that get you closer to your vision and goals. Forget the need to be looked upon as the one who always does everything. It is burning you out. There is peace in saying no.

W

hen it comes to wellness, some people assume that it only means being well physically. Many times, someone is not physically well because they are not spiritually or emotionally well. In a world where events and activities are constantly occurring that can trigger different emotions, opinions, and reactions, we must consider our own well-being, especially learning to maintain our peace.

90

5. LIVE It is easy to get caught up in the weekly activities of work, church, and home that you forget to live. Create harmony in your life by getting a life. Plan a trip. Get a hobby. Get active. Learn to express gratitude. Don’t just settle for being alive but learn to create experiences and make memories. Remember, your peace has power, maximize it!

4. SELF-CARE Be aware of what you need at any given moment. Sometimes, you ignore the signs of your mind and body when it comes to taking care of yourself. You may need to get more rest. You may need a solo vacation or a scheduled appointment with a therapist. Make self-care a priority.

Healing

THROUGH THE POWER OF FORGIVENESS by Ramona Powell Dennis

W

hen we have colds, we use whatever remedies we can think of or go to the doctor for medicine to get rid of it. When we break bones, we must give them time to heal. The mind and spirit need the same kind of attention.

There are times when we will go through issues in life that can drain us mentally, tugging at the very core of our being and even challenging our beliefs. Just like our bodies, we need to allow our mind and spirit to be healed, which can start with forgiveness. We’ve heard it said time and time again that forgiveness isn’t just for the other person, but it is also for us. We can be bound by the chains of anger and hurt and allow them to damage our mind and spirit. We can be consumed by the weight of it all without realizing that it is the source of our discomfort.

THERE ARE TIMES WHEN WE WILL GO THROUGH ISSUES IN LIFE THAT CAN DRAIN US MENTALLY, TUGGING AT THE VERY CORE OF OUR BEING AND EVEN CHALLENGING OUR BELIEFS. We tend to be too hard on ourselves. As much as we want to believe that we are perfect, we are not. We will make mistakes and just as we want God and others to forgive us, we have to be willing to forgive. “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32 NIV

Did you know that healing can start with forgiveness? First, forgive yourself and then ask God to help you to forgive others. Ask Him to help you to acknowledge the fault and give you the strength to put emotions aside and forgive. I’m not saying that this will be an easy task, but it is obtainable. If you don’t think that you need to forgive anyone, ask yourself this question: Who is it that can come into your presence and change your mood in a negative way? That is the person that you need to forgive. No one should be able to affect you in that manner. If they can, you need to acknowledge the issue, address it, and forgive. Allow the power of forgiveness to break the chains of bondage that have taken hold over your life. When you do, you are one step closer to the healing of the mind and spirit that you deserve.

HE STILL HEALS by Rose-Ann Durant

“Healing does not mean the damage never existed. It means the damage no longer controls our lives.”

A

nd what a life I have had. For 12 years, I have been bleeding which left me broken with resources depleted, but still desperate for change. I have visited many doctors with the hope that one could help, but as the years went by, no one could find an answer to my problem. MY BACKGROUND I was poor. I was so desperate for healing that I spent all I had trying to find relief. I yearned for a cure, but none was found. I was an outcast. According to the Jewish laws, I was ritually unclean, and as such, I needed to stay away from others until my bleeding stopped. It never did. I felt dirty, stigmatized, and isolated… alone.

JESUS BRINGS HOPE One day, I heard that Jesus was coming. I heard that he had healed many. The deaf could hear, the lame could walk, the blind could see, the dumb could talk, and

92

I thought maybe, just maybe, he could heal me. Desperate for change, I broke the law. Though I was unclean, I went into the crowd, and tried to touch Him. There were so many people! I thought to myself if I could only touch the hem of His garment, then I could be healed. So, with renewed strength and determination, I pressed, pushed, and stretched forth until I touched Him. Immediately, I was healed. JESUS OFFERS RESTORATION Jesus knew what had happened and asked who had touched Him. When I realized I could not hide what I had done, I fell at his feet trembling and explained why I had touched him and how I was immediately healed. Instead of being angry or even disgusted, Jesus responded with grace, peace, and love. I believe that today, if you come to Him for healing, whether of the body or of the mind, that His response will be the same: grace, peace, and love.

When Jesus healed my body, He made it possible for me to develop relationships with those around me as well as go about without being scorned. That may not be what you need, so it is important to know that healing looks different for all of us. Also, it is important to know that what we think we want is not always what we need. Sometimes, we go to God to heal our bodies and He does; Other times He doesn’t, but instead provides healing in other places we didn’t realize we needed. My sickness no longer has control over my life and yours doesn’t have to either. Go before God and allow Him to work on you, in His way and time, and as you do, you will realize that in Him you have what you need to live victoriously.
