Why I have spent over 22 years of my life helping widows I have spent over 22 years of my life helping widows in the developing world. I have been passionate about helping widows ever since I saw the way my mother was treated when my father died. I was only 10 years old at the time. I also vividly remember my mother being asked by the priest to leave the room when I was going through my wedding rituals with my wife to be. This made me angry. How can my mother, who has looked after me all my life, bring me bad luck? When I first started my charity I didn’t have a clue where this journey would take me and I didn’t realise the extent of the problem around the world. Widows suffer in South Asia and in many parts of Africa in particular. It is my job to make a difference to the lives of widows directly and indirectly. Directly though our empowerment and child education programmes and indirectly through lobbying governments and other institutions to create change that will filter down to help widows. Today, I would like to share some stories of some of the widows we have come across and helped. These are real stories from real widows whose lives we have changed through our empowerment programme in Varanasi in India which we launched in 2017. I’m also going to share details of one of our current projects that we are working on in conjunction with Rotary India Literacy Mission.
