I started doing ballet for fun, not because I thought it would become my main workout. But honestly, it’s turned into one of my favorite ways to move. It’s low-impact, which I love, but it still builds strength, balance, and control. It also makes you way more aware of how your body moves. There’s something about it that feels both calming and challenging at the same time, and it’s been an important part of my life and routine for years now.
Along with ballet, I make time for strength training. It helps improve my performance, prevents injuries, and just makes me feel stronger overall. I focus on lighter weights, good form, and slow movements. Things like core workouts, leg strengthening exercises, and upper body movements make a big difference, especially when paired with ballet.
FOCUSING ON ARMS & CORE
Because ballet already uses the lower body a lot, I try to be intentional about balancing things out. I mainly focus on:
• Upper body strength and definition
• Core strength and stability
• Controlled movements over heavy weights
• Consistency instead of overtraining This combo helps me build total-body strength without feeling worn down.
Nutrition has honestly been the hardest part for me. I used to think I had to follow super strict rules, but that just wasn’t sustainable. Instead, I’ve been focusing on fueling my body in a more realistic way by eating balanced meals, getting enough protein, and not stressing over being perfect. Some days are better than others, but consistency matters more than being extreme.
What’s helped the most is keeping things simple:
• Prioritizing protein at meals
• Adding in fruits and veggies when I can
• Staying consistent instead of all-or-nothing
• Drinking more water
These little habits support my muscles and my recovery, and they make everything feel way more manageable.

• Confidence
• Playfulness
• Genuine connection
Men vs. Women
Men tend to show interest by moving closer to you –scooching their chairs nearer, for instance. Women, on the other hand, tend to show their interest by using their body language, and listening intensely.
• Remeber you lose tone when you’re not directly speaking with them, so be careful.
• Ask interesting questions = Take a geniune interest in their interests.
• Be chill. Be patient.
• Mind your emojis, especially if you’re a man. Use sparingly and carefully.
• Make eye contact. (duh!)
• Mirror their body language. ex. When they lean in, you lean in.
• Keep the conversation positive. Stay away from anything that’s negative.
• Go with the flow. Be laid back and don’t take yourself too seriously.
Directness is appreciated, as men tend to respond positively to clear signals of interest. Compliments on physical appearance or accomplishments are adored.
Flirting with a woman may involve more subtlety and emotional connection. Women often appreciate attentive listening, genuine compliments, and displays of empathy.

When exploring the local real estate market this week, I was struck by a fascinating contrast. Homes in the same general area ranged from $118 to $820 per square foot—a dramatic difference that couldn’t be explained by location alone. Instead, the true distinction lay in the details. These subtle yet powerful elements are what transform a beautiful house into a genuinely luxurious home.
Luxury is not simply about size or price; it’s about the experience a home offers. High-end properties are thoughtfully curated, with every feature contributing to comfort, functionality, and aesthetic appeal. From the moment you arrive, curb appeal sets the tone. Professionally designed landscaping, elegant exterior lighting, and the way a home is positioned on its lot create a sense of arrival and exclusivity.
Inside, quality finishes immediately signal refinement
Premium materials such as natural stone, wide-plank hardwood floors, custom millwork, and designer tile elevate both durability and visual impact. Even the smallest elements—solid-core doors, bespoke cabinetry, and distinctive door hardware—convey craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Lighting is another defining feature of luxury. Layered lighting plans that combine ambient, task, and accent fixtures enhance both functionality and mood. Statement chandeliers or designer pendants often serve as artistic focal points, while strategically placed lighting highlights architectural features and artwork.
Equally important is the flow and functionality of the home. Luxury properties are designed with intentional layouts that support modern living and entertaining. Seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces, well-proportioned rooms, and intuitive circulation patterns create a sense of ease and sophistication.
Finally, interior design and color palettes unify these elements. Cohesive, professionally curated interiors provide a timeless elegance that resonates with buyers seeking more than just a residence—they seek a lifestyle.
Ultimately, the value of a luxury home is defined not merely by its address but by the thoughtful details that enhance everyday living. These elements create an emotional connection, transforming a house into a sanctuary and setting it apart in a competitive market.
For those inspired to explore Birmingham’s real estate market, expert guidance is essential. Through Ray & Poynor, I offer a refined and personalized real estate experience tailored to discerning clients who value privacy, discretion, and exceptional service. Welcome to Stirring the Aesthetic Pot, where beauty trends get questioned - and occasionally roasted.
By Nancy Higginbotham COO, Rousso Adams Facial Plastic Surgery
I’m not a doctor. But I spend every day with two of the best in the business-and a team of master estheticians who live, breathe, and lose sleep over skin health. What I bring to the table is honest curiosity, lived experience, and a front-row seat to what actually works… let’s stir, shall we?
THERE’S A NEW PATIENT IN THE CONSULTATION ROOM.
They’ve done their research. They arrive with edited images, often AI-generated, showing a sharper jawline, a tighter neck, more definition through the lower face. It’s presented as a before and after, except the “after” was created without ever accounting for anatomy.
And yes, it usually looks good. That’s what makes it convincing. These tools operate on the surface of a photograph. They refine contours and smooth transitions, but they have no awareness of the structures that actually create a jawline or define a neck. Bone, muscle, fat compartments, skin quality, the position of the hyoid bone and the voice box, all of the fixed anatomy that determines what a lower face can become, is simply not part of the equation. So the software does what it’s designed to do. It idealizes.

Just as importantly, it is influenced by deeper, non-negotiable anatomy, specifically the position of the hyoid bone and the larynx, or voice box, which sit at the base of the tongue and anchor the upper neck. If those structures sit lower or more forward, the neck will naturally appear fuller and less angular, regardless of how much tightening is performed. That is anatomy. Not a limitation of technique.
AI removes all of those variables. It assumes ideal structure, perfect support, and full correctability. It gives you a neckline that exists independently of the framework that has to carry it. That’s where the disconnect happens.
The problem is that the lower face and neck are not abstract shapes. They are structural systems. The angle between the underside of the jaw and the neck, what we refer to as the cervicomental angle, is one of the primary markers of a defined neckline. When it’s sharp and well supported, the jawline reads clean and distinct from the neck.
But that angle is not something you can just draw in. It is shaped by mandibular projection, the tone and position of the platysma muscle, the presence of submental fat, and the elasticity of the skin.

FROM THE CHAIR:
Dr. Austin Adams
In reality, surgical planning is about working within those constraints, not ignoring them. The goal is not to impose a perfect angle, but to refine what is already there in a way that is anatomically sound and holds up outside of a photograph.
That’s why we photograph patients in-house and review potential outcomes directly with the physician, adjusting images based on their specific structure rather than a generalized template. Same face. Same anatomy. Just moved toward its best version. Technology has made patients more visually articulate, and that’s useful. But there is a difference between recognizing what you like and understanding what your anatomy will support. Aesthetic surgery lives in that distinction.
And the most important thing a surgeon brings to the conversation is not better software. It’s the judgment to know where the image stops and reality begins.
“Patients today come in with plenty of visual references, which helps, but the consultation is about translating that into a realistic outcome. Setting expectations is everything. AI images don’t account for anatomy, so they’re not a reliable guide. Older photos of yourself are far more useful. They’re a far better guide to what your anatomy will support.”

Get Outside Birmingham!
BY: LAUREN VOGEL
Birmingham is in bloom, and there’s no shortage of ways to get outside and feel a spring in your step again.
Whether it’s a new flame, a best friend, your partner or your entire family, it’s time to wrangle your people and welcome back the sunshine. After a cold, rainy winter, it’s reset time. Less screen time, more sunshine. Less scrolling, more exploring. Turn off the TV, close the laptop, and put on your adventure gear. As a lover of nature, I’m always looking for ways to soak in the sunny vibes and make the best out of every day. And as a mom of two boys who literally climb and jump on everything in sight, I’m always hunting for ways to channel that energy into something fun, active, and a little bit magical. This, my friends, is your guide to a magical spring season.
A city in the spring feels alive. Patios fill up, music drifts onto the sidewalks, and suddenly everyone is outside again. It’s the perfect setting for an easy (maybe even romantic) day.
Pepper Place Market
Fresh flowers, local produce, live music. It’s a whole vibe. Wander the booths, and let the morning unfold. You’re likely to run into a friend or make some new ones.
Mural Gazing
Explore downtown, and you’ll find murals everywhere—tucked along side streets, across brick walls, and in places you don’t expect. No need for a map. Just wander, look around, and let Birmingham surprise you.
Highlands Park Picnic + Stroll
The historic Highlands area comes to life in the spring. Wind along the sidewalks past charming, old homes full of character and then set up in Rhodes, Rushton or Caldwell Park with a blanket and a frisbee.
King’s Chair Hike at Oak Mountain
If you’re up for a little challenge, the King’s Chair hike is absolutely worth it. It’s steep in the beginning, but levels out as you go and rewards you with a beautiful vista. You can go out-and-back for a shorter 2.5-mile hike or turn it into a full 4.3-mile loop. Mom Tip: I did this with my nature-loving 6-year-old, and he loved it. The grumpy 8-year-old had to be encouraged, but he made it.
Bike, Walk or Run the Double Oak Lake Loop
The Double Oak Lake Loop Trail at Oak Mountain winds along the water, with plenty of shade and just enough elevation to keep your heart rate up without overdoing it. With plenty of parking, plus bathrooms, a playground, basketball courts, and pavilions, it’s easy to turn this into a full-day outing. Mom Tip: My boys bike, I walk, my husband runs. Everyone wins.
Paddle Boarding
This adventure is equal parts workout and therapy. Quiet and grounding, but challenging enough to keep you engaged. Rent boards at Oak Mountain or try the new Blue Water Park in Pelham for a surprisingly Caribbean-blue option.
Rock Climbing (Outdoor + Indoor)
Moss Rock Preserve is a local gem for bouldering and exploring. It’s one of the easiest places to dip your toe into climbing. The rocks are low, approachable, and perfect for kids. My boys have climbed all over every boulder, jumping from one to the next and walking through the narrow gaps in between like it’s their personal obstacle course. Mom Tip: Keep a close eye on your littles. Some of the rocks are tall with high drop-offs.
Spring doesn’t last forever. Before you know it, we’ll be into full-on summer heat. This is your moment. Get outside. Try something new. Let your kids get dirty. Stay longer than you planned. Life feels better out there.

Garden Shop Wandering
Spring makes me want to plant something. Or at the very least, pretend I’m going to. Being surrounded by greenery, fresh air, and rows of plants instantly shifts my mood.
• Trellis in Cahaba Heights is new, beautifully curated, and feels more like a boutique than a garden shop.
• Leaf & Petal is longtime local favorite, full of inspiration for porches, patios, and plant lovers.
• Collier’s Nursery is a hidden gem with a more local, laid-back feel. Perfect for slow wandering.
Ice Cream Stop
Sometimes the entire outing can revolve around ice cream, and honestly, that’s enough.
• Mountain Brook Creamery is classic, nostalgic, and always crowded for a reason.
• Big Spoon Creamery in Homewood offers unique flavors and a fun atmosphere.
• Bluff Park Ice Cream in Hoover is my personal favorite. Simple, sweet, and delicious.
Scenic Walk
Leave your phone and earbuds at home and immerse yourself in the sound of water, the rustle of leaves and the way the light filters through the trees. Less about the destination and more about giving your mind a break and your spirit a boost.
• Jemison Trail is shaded, peaceful, and perfect for strollers, dogs, or an easy reset. Mom Tip: My boys love throwing rocks in the river and walking barefoot on the rocky shores.
• Birmingham Botanical Gardens is, of course, always a favorite, especially in the spring when everything is in bloom.
• Aldridge Gardens in Hoover gives you open spaces and quiet corners that feel like stepping into a painting. Also, you’ll see plenty of ducks and koi in the pond.
Not all patios are created equal. Give me some breezy, outdoor seating that doesn’t connect to a parking lot, please! I want charm, a little ambiance, maybe some greenery or a tucked-away corner that makes me feel like I’m on vacation.
• Juniper has an enclosed courtyard with a small fountain and seriously delicious food. It’s peaceful, a little romantic, and the kind of spot where you can slow down and savor the moment.
• La Fête feels like a little escape to Paris tucked right into downtown Birmingham. You can’t help but slow down and relax under the string lights in the French bistro energy. Share a few small plates and sip a glass of wine while pretending you’re somewhere far away.
• Golden Age Wine is a perfect late-afternoon stop. Tucked in downtown, it’s part wine shop, part indoor-outdoor wine garden with a great atmosphere and thoughtfully curated wines.
• Elysian Gardens is like stepping into a hidden backyard party. The lush green space, lawn art, and laid-back, open-air vibe are hard to beat. With live music, drinks, and room to spread out, it’s the kind of place where you can settle in and just enjoy being outside.
• The Garage is a Birmingham classic that always delivers. The character-filled patio feels like part antique shop, part hidden garden. Private and enclosed, you can get cozy with a partner or settle in with 20 of your best friends.
Natural and timeless—how do you keep patients from crossing into “overdone?”
The biggest factor is restraint—and the willingness to say no. We see patients all the time who want “just a little more,” whether it’s Botox or filler, but more isn’t always better. In fact, that’s exactly how people end up looking overdone. Our philosophy is rooted in balance and anatomy, not volume. I also think it’s important to normalize imperfection. I’m 47—I have lines, I have texture, and that’s what real skin looks like. Interestingly, I’ve even seen photos of myself where AI editing removed those natural features, and it actually made me look unnatural. That really reinforces my message: perfection isn’t the goal—authenticity is.

We’re not a high-volume med spa, and that matters. There’s a lot of pressure in that space to do more—more syringes, more treatments— but as highly trained dermatologic providers with innate clinical discernment, our responsibility is to the patient—not the sale. We focus on subtle, strategic treatments and offer a range of options beyond injectables, like skin tightening, where you don’t run the same risk of overdoing it. Natural results come from knowing when to stop.
What’s something you wish more women understood about their skin that would completely change how they approach beauty?
That healthy skin is not perfect skin. We’ve created this idea—largely through filters, airbrushing, and AI—that skin should be completely smooth, poreless, and flawless. But skin is a living, breathing organ. It has pores. It has texture. And as we age, it will have lines. Even younger patients come in wanting “zero pores,” and that’s simply not realistic—or healthy. The goal shouldn’t be to erase every sign of life from your face, but to support your skin so it functions at its best.
I always emphasize aging gracefully rather than trying to erase it entirely. That mindset shift alone changes everything—how you treat your skin, how you choose treatments, and how you see yourself. Personally, I lean toward a more natural aesthetic—I’m big on sunscreen and minimal makeup. To me, confidence comes from healthy skin, not covering it up.
My Top 3 Sunscreens for Summer; and Ingredients to Look for.
Sunscreen is non-negotiable—especially in the summer. I always recommend SPF 30 or higher, and ideally something water- or sweatresistant for at least 80 minutes if you’re outdoors. My go-to favorites are:
• SkinBetter Science Sunbetter Tone Smart Compact
• Alastin Hydratint Pro Mineral Sunscreen
• EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46
When choosing a sunscreen, look for broad-spectrum protection (UVA and UVB) and ingredients like zinc oxide for reliable coverage. For acneprone or sensitive skin, lighter, non-comedogenic formulas tend to work best. The best sunscreen is the one you’ll actually wear every single day—so texture and feel matter just as much as protection.
There’s a lot of noise in skincare right now—how do you help patients cut through trends and focus on what truly works?
Skincare is a multi-billion-dollar industry, and every brand wants to be the next “miracle.” But truly innovative ingredients don’t come around very often. As a physician and scientist, I look for evidence—not marketing. The reality is, even the best skincare can only reverse aging to a limited degree. It can improve texture, support collagen, and reduce inflammation—but it’s not going to take 10 years off your face. A lot of confusion comes from misleading before-and-after photos, where patients may have also had lasers, injectables, or even surgery. That creates unrealistic expectations.
In our practice, we focus on education and customization. Every patient receives a tailored routine—what to use in the morning, what to use at night, and in what order—and we adjust it over time based on how their skin responds. I also care deeply about value. You don’t need to overspend to get effective skincare—what matters is the formulation and consistency, not hype. There’s no miracle cream—but there is a smart, consistent plan.
If someone gave you 6–12 months to transform their skin, what would your strategy look like?
It would always be a multi-modality approach—never just one treatment. If someone wants meaningful, long-term change, we combine therapies that address different layers of the skin. That might include resurfacing treatments, skin tightening, and collagen stimulation, paired with maintenance using Botox and very strategic filler when appropriate. I often describe it as a “liquid facelift,” but done conservatively— restoring structure and balance rather than adding volume everywhere. We refine details, like smoothing around the lips and improving skin texture, to elevate the overall result. We also incorporate advanced technologies that strengthen muscle, improve ligament support, and enhance overall skin quality. Treatments like Ellacor Micro-Coring and Tetra Pro Resurfacing, combined with carefully placed fillers, can truly rejuvenate and restore.
The goal is comprehensive, natural rejuvenation—not chasing one wrinkle at a time. And in many cases, with the right plan and consistency, you can achieve beautiful transformation without ever needing a surgical approach.

Birmingham’s food scene gets plenty of its props. But what are the places that are uniquely Birminghamian? What would be the spots in town you would bring an out-of-towner to?
This what Birmingham looks like. Since 1957, Niki’s West has had parking lots full and lines out the door for their southern cuisine and soul food. Dishes are served cafeteria-style, making it a quick spot to dine in or grab a to-go plate during your lunch break. This legendary spot has an ever-changing menu, with fan favorites including center-cut pork chops, Greek chicken and catfish.
Gus’s Hot Dogs, known for its Greek-style hot dogs and rich history, is a family-founded Birmingham staple. Founded in 1947 by Greek immigrant Gus Alexander, the establishment has stuck to its Greek roots through decades of leadership. With multiple locations across Alabama, you can find eclectic flavors around any corner, meeting any craving you have. From a chili dog to a slaw dog, you’re going to keep coming back.

“Eat by color” is O’Carr’s motto. This beloved gem is serious about sourcing and serving fresh ingredients, locally sourced from farmers. Since 1975, O’Carr’s has been serving vibrant dishes to the community and even icons like Billy Joel, Jimmy Buffet, Dolly Parton and more! The chicken salad is a must-have, making up 45 percent of sales. To end with a sweet treat, try out O’Carr’s milkshakes or a slice of cheesecake.
Yes, we know it’s in Bessemer, but it’s close enough, and few places have such a passionate following. What started as a 12-seat bar in the early 1900s, the Bright Star Restaurant quickly turned into something iconic. Since 1925, generations of the Koikos family have poured their passion and hearts into this gem, making it more than just a restaurant; it’s a legacy. The tile floors and hand-painted murals carry the love over the years, enhancing the restaurant’s beautiful past. From the mouthwatering Southern “meat and three” lunches to the savory steam and seafood dinners, the Bright Star is a go-to destination..
I guess we’ll never be able to say Highlands anymore? But her little sister is still great. Disappear in Five Points for a little while and immerse yourself in French-inspired flavors. Chez FonFon is a bistro classic with comfort dishes like steak frites that reflect chef Frank Stitt’s love for food, farming and travel. From gaining experience in San Francisco to the South of France, Stitt found his way back to Alabama and has created an authentic space with European wines and a touch from Lyon. 304
You can’t call yourself a Birminghamian without having been to these quentessential Birmingham restaurants.
Sunday’s lunch menu reads like this: Menu: Baked Chicken and Dressing, Chitterlings, Fried Pork Chops, Ox Tails, Neckbones w/ Potatoes
Sides: Au Gratin Potatoes, Macaroni and Cheese, Blackeye Peas, Candied Yams, Collard Greens, Green Beans, Fried Corn.
Dessert: Banana Pudding, Peach Cobbler.
Need we say more? That’s as soul as it gets, my friend.

An intimate and beautifully architectured building, Bottega is a Birmingham favorite that fuses Southern ingredients with rich culinary heritages of Italy. Since 1988, Bottega has been a charming establishment for thoughtfully crafted Italian dishes and cocktails that bring pieces of wine bars and trattorias from Italy’s most sacred places. Staple dishes include the Risotto and Beef Carpaccio, leaving you to dream of your next visit.
243 W Valley Ave
We couldn’t let west Homewood’s incrediblely diverse food scene go unrecognized. Red Pearl has been a go-to spot for Asian cuisine for over 20 years, with authentic Chinese and Cantonese dishes. Red Pearl has a large selection across its menu, with dishes perfect for sharing. Upon entry, you walk through the restaurant’s oriental supermarket supplied with fresh meats, snacks and household supplies, ensuring you check two things off at once: dining and speciality shopping.
In a city known for BBQ, Saw’s may be the best, at least according to our annual Reader’s Poll. It started almost two decades ago when Mike “Sorry Ass Wilson” turned a fun time barbecuing with friends into a spot that Birminghamians can recognize. This flavorful gem built its reputation on Carolina-style smoked meat and house-made sauces. Despite its humble beginnings, Saw’s BBQ quickly grew into multiple locations thanks to the quality and flavors that ignite taste buds and create good memories.
2805 Cahaba Rd
Feel like you’re walking back in time! Once a neighborhood drugstore, it is now a cozy, intimate kitchen-style sandwich shop known for its warm and welcoming service. Regulars are often known by name, making you more than just a customer, but part of the family. Fan favorites are the Egg Salad Sandwich and the Pimento BLT, paired nicely with homemade limeade, keeping locals coming back!

From generations of flavor and a story that feels like it came straight from a movie, Chef Timothy Hontzas brings a multitude of flavors to the table. His grandfather’s legacy, brought from Greece to New Orleans and just $17, is what led his family to Birmingham. Chef Timothy opened Johnny’s Restaurant in Homewood, blending Southern “meat and three” flavors with Greek staples like spanakopita and souvlaki. The result? A special place with unforgettable dishes

Vlada Groysman, M.D.
DERMATOLOGY
205-214-7546 | cahabaderm.com
Dr. Vlada Groysman is the founder and Medical Director of Cahaba Dermatology & Spa, a comprehensive skin health center serving the Birmingham community. She is a board-certified dermatologist specializing in medical, surgical, cosmetic, and advanced laser dermatology, with a particular passion for women’s health, including vulvar dermatology. She also serves as a national trainer and master injector for Galderma and Allergan Aesthetics, focusing on refined, natural injectable outcomes and facial balancing.
In addition to her clinical practice, she leads the clinical research division, where they have participated in numerous trials across a wide range of dermatologic conditions, helping bring innovative therapies to patients.
At Cahaba Dermatology & Spa, they emphasize a results-driven aesthetic approach, offering cutting-edge laser technology and combination treatments designed to improve skin quality, restore more refreshed and youthful appearance, and achieve elegant, natural-looking results.
Current Trends: One of the biggest shifts in dermatology right now is moving away from “overdone” treatments toward subtle, regenerative approaches. Patients are no longer chasing quick fixes—they want long-term skin health. Collagen-stimulating injectables, advanced lasers, and combination treatments are allowing us to improve skin quality from within. There’s also a growing emphasis on personalization—treatments tailored not just to the face, but to lifestyle, hormones, and overall wellness. It’s a much more thoughtful, holistic approach to aging.
Most Rewarding
Practice: What I find most rewarding is the trust my patients place in me. Skin is deeply personal, and being able to improve not just how someone looks, but how they feel about themselves, is incredibly meaningful. I also love the balance dermatology offers—combining science, precision, and artistry. Beyond patient care, mentoring other providers and participating in clinical research allows me to contribute to the future of our field, which keeps the work both dynamic and fulfilling.
Motivation: My family is at the center of everything I do. I have two children, and they constantly remind me why balance matters. We have a simple philosophy: work hard, but fully enjoy the time you have together. Whether it’s traveling or just being present at home, those moments keep me grounded. They also motivate me to keep growing—both as a physician and as a person—so I can lead by example in both my career and my life.

Gregory B. Gullung, M.D.
ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY
(205) 228-7600 | orthoalabama.com
Dr. Gullang graduated from medical school at Louisiana State University of New Orleans in 2005, and came to Birmingham to do his residency at the University of Alabama. It is a five-year residency for orthopedics, and then he did an extra year that focused solely on spine training in Jackson, Mississippi at the university there. He is certified with the American board of orthopedic surgery. He has been practicing at the same group for almost 15 years. His focus is on cervical (neck) and lumbar (back) degeneration and disc pathology. But he treats many different types of issues. One thing that is important for him is to always strive to improve, and to provide the best care for patients regardless of the problems they’re having. What he’s found is the number one thing you can do is listen to what patients are saying when they come into the clinic because if you pay attention, they will be able to tell you what’s going on before you even look at any x-rays or MRIs. Plus, it allows you to see what is really important to them based on the activities they perform and about the activities they wish they could do.
Current Trends: Minimally invasive surgery has been trending. And while there are certainly benefits to small incisions and less local tissue disruption, it’s important for the surgeons to realize the work on the inside has to be there or there will be a very suboptimal outcome. I think it is important for surgeons and patients to be aware that there could be a steep learning curve for some of these procedures and you want to make sure your surgeon is experienced with multiple treatment options since there is not one size fits all. Another thing on the horizon is the development and refinement of robotic and computer navigated surgeries. What these aim to do is assist the surgeon in placement of certain components and provides back up as well as double checking in real time in the environment. These technologies are always advancing, and while it is not a substitute for training, care and experience, it does provide valuable assistance during surgery.
Most Rewarding Aspect of Practice: One of the best things about this job is being able to help people to get their lives back. With surgeries involving the spine, it is very common that there is some severe pain component or neurologic deficit that is preventing someone from living a life they want. It is a huge reward for me when someone comes back or you see them out around town and they tell you that you saved their life. Of course there’s a little exaggeration there, but to them they had no quality of life or a life that wasn’t even worth living. And being able to give that back is amazing.

PLASTIC SURGERY
(205) 980-1744 | heddenmd.com
Their team includes board-certified plastic surgeons and a facial plastic surgeon dedicated to providing comprehensive aesthetic care. Their practice features four QUAD A–accredited (AAASF) on-site operating rooms, reflecting their commitment to safety and the highest surgical standards. As one of the highest-volume plastic surgery practices in the country, they bring extensive experience across a wide range of procedures while maintaining a personalized approach focused on achieving natural, confident results for each patient.
Current Trends: One exciting innovation is Motiva Preservé, an advanced, minimally invasive breast augmentation technique designed to preserve internal breast support structures, allowing for a more natural look, feel, and recovery experience. Another major shift in our field is the rise of GLP-1 medications. Historically, significant weight loss was most often achieved through surgery. Now, with more patients losing weight medically, we’re seeing increased demand for skin-removal procedures to address loose skin after successful transformation.
Most Rewarding Aspect of Practice: The most rewarding aspect of our practice is seeing the meaningful increase in confidence patients experience after surgery. While the physical transformation is important, the emotional impact is often even greater. Watching patients feel more comfortable in their own skin, participate more fully in daily life, and carry themselves with renewed assurance is incredibly fulfilling. It’s a privilege to be part of a process that supports both aesthetic goals and overall well-being.
Motivation: We are motivated by a constant commitment to growth—continuously learning new techniques while refining the trusted methods that produce safe, consistent results. Plastic surgery is always evolving, and staying at the forefront of innovation allows us to offer patients the most thoughtful, effective care possible. At the same time, perfecting foundational techniques ensures reliability and precision, which ultimately supports the highest standard of outcomes for our patients.

Dr. Sarah Sawyer and Dr. Marilyn Zabielinski
COSMETIC DERMATOLOGY
(205) 870-3303 | birminghamskin.com
Dr. Sarah Sawyer is a board certified dermatologist and founder of Dermatology & Laser of Alabama with advanced training in cosmetic dermatology, including a laser fellowship. She specializes in injectables, laser treatments, and comprehensive aesthetic care with an emphasis on natural, long-lasting results. She’s also certified in functional medicine, which informs her holistic approach to skin health. Her focus is on thoughtful, customized treatment plans that prioritize aesthetic longevity, balance, and helping patients look refreshed and like themselves, but better!
Dr. Marilyn Zabielinski is a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist specializing in advanced aesthetic injectables, including neuromodulators and biostimulatory and hyaluronic acid fillers. After years of practice in Miami, she brought her expertise to Dermatology & Laser of Alabama. Her approach is tailored and detail-oriented, creating an effortlessly elevated, balanced, and harmonious look.
Current Trends: (Dr. Sawyer)- I’m glad to see a stronger focus on longevity—building and maintaining results over time guided by how the skin truly ages, rather than relying on one-off treatments. I’ve always been drawn to regenerative medicine & integrative aesthetics, incorporating IV therapy, PRP, and collagen stimulators. We’ve also long embraced a membership model to support consistent skincare, making it easier for our patients to achieve long-term results. (Dr.Z)We’re seeing a move away from chasing trends and toward more individualized, thoughtful treatment—because faces aren’t trendy. It’s about doing what’s appropriate for each patient. There’s also increasing focus on the science of aging, with treatments that support collagen and improve skin quality over time.
Most Rewarding Aspect of Practice: (Dr. Sawyer)- The relationships we’ve built over many years. I started this practice in 2007 as a young mother, and it’s been incredibly meaningful to grow alongside so many of our patients for the past (almost 20!) years. Many patients and staff members have been with us for years, which creates a real sense of trust and loyalty. Being a trusted part of patients’ skincare journeys—boosting confidence between weddings, milestones, and life changes—is truly special.
Motivation: (Dr. Sawyer)- Spending time with my boys as they transform into young men is a focus right now. And I genuinely love what I do, so continuing learning keeps me focused, curious, and committed to excellence in my practice. (Dr. Z)- My family is a huge part of what keeps me grounded and motivated. My three boys remind me of the importance of balance and being fully present. That carries into my work, where I strive to be fully intentional with every patient.

Scott Appell M.D., Ashley Whitsett, CRNP, Robert Sorrell, M.D.
METABOLIC AND HORMONE HEALTH / MEDICAL WEIGHT MANAGEMENT
(205) 593-4371 | appellsorrell.com
Scott Appell, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon. He earned his medical degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine and completed his orthopedic residency at UAB. He has extensive experience in medical weight management to improve surgical outcomes and overall quality of life. Ashley Whitsett, FNP-C, earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Auburn University and her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Ashley is a board-certified family nurse practitioner through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and specializes in aesthetics, hormone optimization, and peptide therapy. Robert Sorrell, MD, a Birmingham native, has practiced orthopedic surgery in Birmingham since 1992. He earned his medical degree and completed his orthopedic residency at UAB. Dr. Sorrell is passionate about preventive healthcare, with a focus on helping patients return to active, functional lifestyles.
They began using weight loss medications in their orthopedic practice to help patients lose weight to minimize surgical complications and improve outcomes. They saw firsthand how truly life-changing these treatments can be especially when paired with hormone optimization and a more holistic approach to health. Their clinic specializes in aesthetics, hormone optimization, gut health, and metabolic health, focusing on prevention and longevity. At the heart of what they do is a simple goal: helping their patients feel better, look better, and live longer so they can fully enjoy their lives.
Current Trends: We found that combining weight loss medications with hormone optimization leads to improved outcomes. GLP-1 medications can be associated with a loss of lean muscle mass; however, when used alongside hormone optimization, patients are better able to preserve muscle mass while reducing stubborn abdominal fat. With the right combination of peptide therapies and hormone optimization, we’re seeing positive changes in how patients feel and look, with a focus on supporting long-term vitality.
Most Rewarding Aspect of Practice: Watching patients regain energy, improve their mental health, rekindle the spark in their relationships, and finally feel like themselves again is the most fulfilling part of what we do. We recently had a patient share that she “finally felt like a girl again,” and that she didn’t realize how poorly she had been feeling until after treatment, having gradually become accustomed to feeling unwell over the years. At her follow-up, the joy on her face made all the years of training, education, and work to build this clinic feel deeply worthwhile.
Motivation: (Scott Appell) Guided by my passion for active living, meaningful connection, and family, I am dedicated to empowering patients to achieve sustainable wellness. (Ashley Whitsett) The joy my children bring into my life is the light I carry into every patient room. My 3-year-old son’s zest for life, along with my one-year-old daughter’s pure joy reminds me to slow down, listen deeply, and care with intention. (Robert Sorrell I’ve always been very active, and at 66, staying healthy enough to keep up with my two children and be present in their lives matters most to me.

ORTHODONTICS
(205) 564-6776 | bhamorthodontics.com
Dr. Erika Hartman’s orthodontic training, including graduating from UA Birmingham and Meharry School of Dentistry, followed by a Certificate in Orthodontics from Howard University, informs her commitment to creating confident, healthy smiles. They focus on fostering trust and long-term relationships with local families. This shared commitment is the strength of their practice.

Current Trends: Orthodontics is evolving rapidly, driven by digital technology. Innovations like 3D scanning and custom-made clear aligners are making treatments more precise and comfortable. We utilize the latest advancements to offer tailored treatment paths that minimize treatment time and enhance results for our patients. Our team regularly completes advanced training to stay at the forefront of these specialized techniques, ensuring we deliver world-class care.
Most Rewarding Aspect of Practice: The most rewarding aspect is witnessing the transformative impact a confident, healthy smile has on a child’s life. As a team of six orthodontists, all parents, we understand the privilege of caring for children. Our mission has remained unchanged since opening our doors - to provide affordable orthodontic treatment while never sacrificing quality. We believe that anyone who comes in (patients and parents) should leave with a smile. I have a goal to positively impact at least one person everyday.
Motivation: My children always motivate me to be a better person since I know I am setting an example for them. Dr. Ferreira shares our dedication, further strengthening our commitment to the Birmingham community.

Blake S. Raggio. M.D., FACS
FACIAL PLASTIC & RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY (659) 272-0092 | raggiomd.com
Dr. Blake Raggio is a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon focused exclusively on the face and neck. He co-founded Raggio MD with his wife, Kristin, and together they’ve built a boutique, highly personalized practice centered on trust and attention to detail. He made a deliberate decision to focus entirely on facial surgery, particularly advanced facelift and rhinoplasty, because he believes true mastery comes from repetition, refinement, and an unwavering commitment to one area of expertise.
Current Trends: Facial Plastic Surgery is evolving toward preservationbased techniques that restore rather than alter. I developed the PreservaLift™, my approach to advanced facial rejuvenation, centered on structural support, natural movement, and long-term results, addressing multiple areas simultaneously to create a more harmonious result. At the same time, patients are becoming more discerning, often traveling to seek surgeons who focus exclusively on the face and consistently perform facelifts and rhinoplasties at a high level, recognizing that natural results come from experience, precision, and specialization.
Most Rewarding Aspect of Practice: The most rewarding part of my work is helping patients feel like themselves again. Refreshed, confident, and aligned with how they feel internally. These decisions are deeply personal, and being trusted with that process is something I take seriously. My goal is always to create results that feel natural and undetectable, where patients simply look like a more rested, vibrant version of themselves. Seeing that quiet confidence return is what makes this work meaningful.
Motivation: My family is at the center of everything I do. I grew up in New Orleans, where hospitality and attention to experience were part of everyday life, and that perspective continues to shape how we care for patients. Working alongside my wife, Kristin, and raising a young family, we’ve built both a life and a practice grounded in shared values—discipline, integrity, and genuine care. That foundation influences every decision we make and every patient we serve.

Dr. John Harrison Irons
ANESTHESIOLOGY & PAIN MEDICINE (205) 557-2253 | southernketamine.com
Dr. Irons is a board-certified anesthesiologist and pain medicine physician, trained at the University of Alabama at Birmingham with fellowship training in pain management at the University of North Carolina. He is the medical director of Southern Ketamine and Wellness, where he specializes in ketamine therapy for treatment-resistant depression, PTSD, and chronic pain conditions. His background allows him to integrate interventional pain expertise with innovative mental health treatments.
Current Trends: One of the most exciting developments in medicine is the use of ketamine and related therapies for treatment-resistant depression and chronic pain. Many patients are unaware that rapid-acting treatments now exist for conditions that historically took weeks or months to improve. There is also growing integration between mental health and pain medicine, recognizing how closely these conditions overlap and how treating both simultaneously can significantly improve outcomes.
Most Rewarding Aspect of Practice: The most rewarding part of my practice is seeing meaningful, often rapid improvements in patients who have struggled for years without relief. Whether it’s a patient with severe depression finding hope again or someone regaining function after chronic pain, those transformations are incredibly impactful. Being able to offer treatments that truly change quality of life—and sometimes even save lives—is what makes this work so fulfilling.
Motivation: I have unfortunately lost several close friends to suicide, which has deeply shaped my perspective on mental health care. Those experiences drive my commitment to helping patients who feel like they’ve run out of options. I am highly motivated to provide effective, compassionate treatments that can intervene before it’s too late, and to ensure patients know there is always hope and help available.

Dr. Daniel Rousso and Dr. Austin Adams
FACIAL PLASTIC AND RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY (205) 930-9595 | www.drrousso.com
Rousso Adams Facial Plastic Surgery Clinic, P.C. brings together over three decades of combined experience in facial plastic surgery.
Dr. Daniel Rousso, a triple board-certified facial plastic surgeon, and Dr. Austin Adams, a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon, specialize in advanced facial rejuvenation, including the deep plane facelift, as well as rhinoplasty and hair restoration. Their work is defined by a commitment to natural, lasting results and thoughtful judgment, knowing when to proceed and when to guide a patient in a different direction.
Current Trends: Facial plastic surgery is moving toward highly individualized approaches that prioritize structure, longevity, and restraint. The deep plane facelift remains a cornerstone technique, allowing for natural repositioning of facial tissues without a pulled appearance when performed with precision. There is also increased focus on the neck and jawline, along with fat transfer to restore volume in a more lasting, biologic way, particularly as GLP-1 medications contribute to facial volume loss. At the same time, more men are seeking treatment, with an emphasis on refinement that preserves strength and character.
Most Rewarding Aspect of Practice: The most rewarding aspect is being part of the full experience, not just the procedure. Many patients travel from across the country, choosing to recover in Birmingham where the pace is slower and the environment allows for a more comfortable, private healing experience. Care does not begin and end with surgery. Patients remain closely supported throughout recovery, with thoughtful follow-up and therapies designed to promote healing, comfort, and confidence.
Motivation: A deep sense of responsibility to patients is what continues to drive the work. This is not just about surgery, but about walking with someone through a very personal decision and the time that follows it. Guided by an artistic eye, the goal is not to change how someone looks, but to restore a sense of alignment between how they feel and how they are seen. Patients are known, supported, and never left to navigate the process on their own.

Dr. James Libecco and Dr. Holly Gunn
DERMATOLOGY
(205) 415-7536 | gunndermatology.com
Dr. Holly Gunn is a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Gunn Dermatology, specializing in both medical and cosmetic dermatology. She is recognized for her refined, results-driven approach to cosmetic and laser treatments, while also providing comprehensive medical care for a wide range of skin conditions. She earned her medical degree from the University of South Alabama and completed her dermatology residency at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. With additional training in advanced aesthetic techniques and a Master’s in Public Health, she combines technical precision with an artistic eye to deliver natural, highly individualized results.
Dr. James Libecco is a board-certified dermatologist with more than 20 years of experience, specializing in both medical and cosmetic dermatology. He is widely regarded as a trusted authority in complex medical dermatology, while also offering expert cosmetic care grounded in decades of clinical experience. He earned his medical degree from Northeastern Ohio Medical University and completed his dermatology residency at the Cleveland Clinic, where he served as chief resident. Known for his depth of knowledge and clinical judgment, he is often sought out for challenging cases and is highly respected within the dermatology community.
Current Trends: (Dr. Gunn)- Dermatology is evolving toward regenerative, subtle treatments that enhance rather than alter. Innovations in energybased devices, biostimulatory injectables, and combination therapies allow us to improve skin quality at a foundational level. Achieving these outcomes requires not only advanced training, but a disciplined, detail-oriented approach and a deep understanding of facial balance and long-term aesthetic planning. (Dr. Libecco)- Medical dermatology has advanced significantly with the development of highly targeted therapies for chronic inflammatory conditions and skin cancers. These treatments are transforming patient outcomes but require significant expertise to apply effectively.
Most Rewarding Aspect of Practice: The most rewarding aspect of our work is helping patients feel confident in a way that looks effortless and entirely their own. When cosmetic treatments are done well, the results are quiet, but powerful. What we find most rewarding is helping patients navigate complex dermatologic conditions and improving their quality of life in a meaningful way. Many of these cases require thoughtful problem-solving and long-term management.
Motivation: (Dr. Gunn)- Outside of medicine, my greatest joy is my family. Life is full, active, and deeply rewarding. That sense of balance, energy, and perspective carries into my practice and shapes the way I care for patients—with intention, attentiveness, and genuine connection. (Dr. Libecco)- Family plays an important role in grounding and motivating me. I have three children and value the time we spend together. Since marrying Dr. Gunn in October 2025, our shared commitment to family and adventure has only grown.

Ben Pearce, MD
PLASTIC SURGERY
(205) 408-9787 | revealbeauty.net
Known for his compassionate bedside manner and modern approaches to aesthetic surgery, Dr. Ben Pearce is a double board certified surgeon, holding certifications in Plastic & Reconstructive surgery as well as Surgery. Dr. Pearce is the owner of Reveal Beauty Plastic Surgery, a clinic solely focused on aesthetics, both surgical and non-surgical.
Dr. Pearce completed his medical school training locally at University of Alabama at Birmingham, followed by a 5 year surgery residency at Louisiana State University. After obtaining board certification in surgery, he elected to complete a 3 year Plastic & Reconstructive fellowship at Vanderbilt University, in Nashville, TN. Dr. Pearce’s training encompasses aesthetics of the face, breast, and body – enabling him to help his patients achieve their goals through the utilization of modern, safe, and advanced techniques.
Current Trends: Today’s plastic surgery trends are all about creating a natural, effortless look. Unlike the plastic surgery of generations past, the goal is effortless beauty. The vast majority of our patients are no longer trying to mimic appearances seen on TV or social media; instead, they are looking for treatments that truly encompass their best attributes with subtle improvements. These ideas are echoed throughout our practice: facial rejuvenation patients seeking a “rested and renewed” appearance, our breast patients seeking a “youthful and lifted look,” and our body contouring patients seeking a “healthy lifestyle look” that helps rewind the years.
Most Rewarding Aspect of Practice: From the first meeting to the final follow-up, there are so many special moments that I get to experience with my patients. Seeing a renewed sense of confidence in our patients, is always humbling and rewarding. When a patient entrusts us with their care, it a truly gratifying experience that I cherish deeply.
Motivation: I am always motivated to be the best person I can be in all aspects of my life. I strive to be the best husband, father, medical provider, and colleague at all times. My alma mater (Spring Hill College) instilled in me that one should always strive for excellence in your talents and interests to best serve your community and mankind. This is something I live by every day.

The literal translation is, “Would you like to go for a walk?” But, as often happens when one translates, there is much more meaning than the words state. It is a long revered Italian tradition to go for a stroll, or a passeggiata (pass-uh-JAH-tuh), after dinner. Somewhat interestingly, various mayors have started to use a passeggiata as a way to connect with their constituents. The most famous modern example may be in the town of Valdobbiadene where Mayor Luciano Fregonese began his nightly passeggiate (passeggiata is singular, while passeggiate is plural) in an attempt to get in daily movement and interact with his electorate.

Alabama summer nights with a nice dry Prosecco? Perfect. And, of course, we had to start with a Prosecco in honor of Mayor Luciano Fregonese. He is the mayor of Valdobbiadene, in the heart of Prosecco. We don’t know for certain, but we have a feeling that the Ostro might be right up his alley. See, Mayor Fregonese is trying to be a bit healthier, and the Ostro has one of the lowest sugar contents of any Prosecco we carry. Perfect match.
The Italians are not the only ones to appreciate the virtue of a passeggiata. The French concept can be found in reference to a flâneur. Mainly found in a more urban setting, a flâneur is one who goes on a leisurely stroll. This Oregon Pinot Noir is delightful and relaxing. The bright fruit and subtle spice make it a summertime treat. It is perfect for a moonlit passeggiata with your dog.
Why are we bringing this up in an article about wine? So many reasons! First, everyone is trying to be a bit healthier nowadays. There are many scientific reasons why a stroll after dinner can benefit (cortisol levels, digestion, blood sugar, metabolism) us, as well as the general sense of just enjoying a walk after a big meal. We strongly recommend taking the dog on this walk as well.
We have chosen four wines which we think are great for a passeggiata. We’ve also done some research on these. You could say that we’ve “road tested” them.

The notion of passeggiata is certainly not new. As a matter of fact, the promenade along Lake Como (Lago di Como) was created by then Mayor Lino Gelpi for citizens and tourists alike. We chose this Valpolicella because Lago di Garda is another beautiful lake quite near Lago di Como and Valpolicella is another great summertime red. Try this one with grilled sausages, charcuterie, or a simple pizza. This is a bit more lush, but still close enough to Pinot Noir to be comfortable – yet different enough to be interesting.
This is as subtle as a sledgehammer. While the Flâneur and the Tenuta Sant’Antonio have elegance and nuance, The Walking Fool has intensity and bravado. Created by the Wagner Family, of Caymus fame, this Zinfandel based blend is bold and rich.
