A LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCE DEBBIE TAYLOR REDISCOVERS HER FREEDOM AND INDEPENDENCE, WITH HER FOLDING MOBILITY SCOOTER EBBIE TAYLOR, 53 from Luton has been an Efoldi customer for over three years. Debbie requires two knee replacements, has extremely limited mobility and is not able to walk unaided. Debbie explains how her MK1.5 Efoldi scooter has changed her life, giving her more freedom and independence. “I already had a foldable mobility scooter, but it was no longer suitable for my needs. To be lifted, it had to be dismantled – I had to remove the seat and the battery. The battery was so heavy, and without any help I could not manage it. Not only was it heavy but it took quite some time to dismantle and fit back together.

D

Design-led product It’s such a modern and trendy looking thing! When you are younger, you don’t want to look like an old person on a scooter. I am only 53, and a very young 53! The Efoldi

scooter doesn’t look like a mobility aid, it actually looks really modern. The Efoldi is also very robust and can carry passengers up to 120kg (19 stone), unlike many other folding scooters.

Exceptionally portable With my Efoldi I can easily lift it in and out of my Vauxhall Mokka MPV. It is so light, I can lift it unaided. I am awaiting two knee replacements, and I have a split tendon and sciatica in both legs. Even with all of those issues I have no problems lifting my Efoldi. Without it, I wouldn’t be able to go anywhere. I cannot walk at all now so this really is my lifeline. It is always in the car, I use it everywhere I go.

Ideal for train travel and cruise ships Train travel is easy with my Efoldi. With the Efoldi you can just fold it up, lift it onto the train, and even use it as a seat when all the seats are taken! Or it can easily be stored in the luggage compartment. I don’t have to plan ahead, I can just decide when and where to go. We also went away on a cruise, and my Efoldi worked so well. The corridors are quite narrow, so a larger scooter wouldn’t have worked and I would have to keep taking it apart. In the cabin I could also fold it up to the size of a suitcase and it would sit in the corner.

Impact on quality of life

Please visit www.classiccanes.co.uk to view our full range and find a stockist. Trade enquiries welcome.

6

My Efoldi has impacted hugely on my life. It has enabled me to go out so much more than before. Before I had my Efoldi I never used to go out, my mom and dad had to do all of my shopping for me. Now I have got my freedom and independence back and I can go out whenever and wherever I want. I would describe Efoldi as a life changer, it creates independence and is extremely easy to use. It makes you wonder why no one thought of this invention years ago! For more information about Efoldi, please visit: www.efoldi.com Ability Needs Magazine

Bryon Chappell of N&C Phlexicare shares his knowledge and considerations for creating a dementia friendly bathroom S AN ENVIRONMENT used on a daily basis, the bathroom is an important space to make safe and secure, whilst maintaining the dignity of the individual using the bathroom. The design of a bathroom needs to be one that takes into consideration the mental and physical challenges brought on by dementia, whilst future proofing the environment to cater for the progressive nature of the disease. Adaptations carried out at later stages could be counterproductive and cause a great level of disorientation, confusion and distress. Adaptations should ideally be carried out directly after an early stage diagnosis.

A

1. Preventing Falls Removing all slip and trip hazards within a bathroom is the first step, so the installation of a level access or low level showering area helps to reduce trip and slip hazards within wet areas. N&C Phlexicare offer a comprehensive selection of specially designed wet room shower decks that are exceptionally strong (accepting up to 470kg) with pre formed gradients built into the decks for the fast and effective removal of water from the wet area. If a wet room isn’t appropriate for the location, a low-level shower tray with slip resistant surface is a safe alternative. N&C Phlexicare’s Nova Anti-Slip Low Profile shower tray features a 40mm overall height for a minimal step into the wet area. Stepping out of the showering area with wet, bare feet can also prove a threat. Therefore, consider the use of slip resistant floor tiles that have a PTV rating of 36+, which prevents slips for bare foot traffic in wet areas. The alternate option is the use of plain coloured slipresistant vinyl flooring.

2. Colour Contrast Effective colour contrast is a fundamental factor in dementia-friendly design. In the bathroom, a selection of well-placed grab rails which contrast vividly with the colour of the walls enables easy visual identification and can help dementia patients negotiate their way around the bathroom effectively; in turn minimising the potential for slips or falls. Strategic colour contrast is an intrinsic part of many of the N&C Phlexicare core healthcare product range, making the range suitable for dementia-friendly adaptations in residential and healthcare settings. N&C Offer a range of contrasting bathroom products and accessories such as shower seats, grab rails to name a few, such as the N&C Evolve Shower Seat.

3. Mirrors & Reflective Surfaces Some people with dementia can lose the ability to recognise their own reflection and may be alarmed by seeing themselves in a mirror or reflective surface. Ideally, mirrors should be removable or have the option to be covered, to avoid undue distress. The same goes for objects which may have a reflective surface. For example, chrome towel rails can be replaced with anti-scald radiators, and reflective shower screens can be replaced with non-reflective or frosted types. N&C can assist with offering an LRV rating that measures the light reflection within a bathroom setting and the proposed contrast required for the user.

4. Safety When Showering An electric shower, with scald-prevention thermostatic controls, is the preferred option for dementia-friendly bathrooms. Many inclusive showers have colour-contrast buttons to enable ease of use. Mixer showers are not recommended because the reflections in the mirrored surface can be cause for concern to a dementia patient as mentioned above. As many dementia patients become less aware of their surroundings, flood prevention is a significant issue. As such the Illusion shower tray from N&C Phlexicare offers a tray with assisted water removal in the pre formed falls on the shower tray encouraging the fast and effective removal of water.

5. Bathroom Lighting Appropriate lighting is incredibly important within a dementia-friendly bathroom adaptation, as poor lighting can cause nervousness, apprehension or fear; leading to slips or falls.

rise and glide showering system Designed with useability and practicality in mind, the N&C Pro-door Advance Rise and Glide system features an air assisted push paddle that, when depressed, raises the door by 20mm for comfortable and easy manoeuvring of the 360 degree hinged doors. This feature prevents the seals from dragging and damaging due to wear and tear, whilst keeping water within the wet area. Once in place, the doors can be locked into place by pressing down on the door pads to create a water tight seal.

New report reveals chronically ill and disabled workers endure regular discrimination in UK workplaces NEW REPORT has revealed the discrimination experienced by chronically ill and disabled people – who comprise 1 in 4 of the UK workforce. It shows they face uncertainty and disruption in the workplace and lack of career opportunities, due to their health, with more than 1 in 3 (38%) reporting that their health needs were not taken seriously at interview. Released by UK charity Astriid, ‘Employment and Long-Term Illness: The Invisible Talent Pool’, pulls together research and advice from UK-wide organisations and from polling one third of Astriid’s candidates. Candidates reported that when it came to applying for a new role, many were concerned about disclosing their long-term illness due to fear of discrimination. One of the respondents reported: “I was made to feel like a waste of time and energy, being told a lot of times ‘We’re taking a chance on you’ which I don’t feel would have been said to someone who wasn’t ill.” The report also highlights that traditional 9 to 5, 35plus hour roles are unsuitable for most job seekers with long-term health concerns. However, only 6% of vacancies in flexible roles that would suit this workforce offer a salary that sufficiently covers the cost of living. Despite the 2010 Equality Act, the paper identifies a nervousness from those with an illness or disability to ask for reasonable adjustments at work. More than a third fear being treated differently and more than a quarter don’t want to approach their employer. In response to the report, Astriid, which was founded by the late David Shutts OBE in 2018 after a cancer diagnosis left him feeling ignored and ‘on the scrap heap’, has launched the Astriid Challenge. The monthlong virtual event during July, which has already attracted 400 global participants, aims to raise awareness and bring much-needed monies into the charity. It also hopes to show the plight of people suffering with long-term health conditions who have been “living in isolation” long before the pandemic began. Steve Shutts, CEO of the charity and David’s brother, explains: “As the majority of the population countdown to freedom, many of those with chronic health conditions, or their carers, will continue to experience isolation, restrictions and limitations on their daily life.

A

Steve Shutts with brother David Shutts OBE

“So, we’re asking people to set themselves an individual or team challenge to carry out during the month of July, in recognition of the millions of people who face challenges every day as a result of a long-term health condition or disability. Between 1-31 July 2021, we want to collectively travel the distance around-the-world, covering 40,075 kilometres.” “We hope that by spreading it across one month, it will allow many with health conditions to take part when their symptoms are at their best. Anyone can participate – whether they walk 1km or run 100km – it will make a difference to us reaching our overall goal.” Steve says any funds raised will go towards several projects, including a training and reskilling programme, back to work support and a research study to attract more prospective employers and live job roles. Astriid actively matches its members, who it has coined ‘The Invisible Talent Pool’ - the 10 million-strong community of talented UK professionals who are turned away from career opportunities because of their health with meaningful employment. With roles spanning a wealth of sectors and specialisms, it has an enviable collection of blue-chip partner employers on its books, including Ageas UK, Salesforce, and Altran. Steve concludes: “Covid has been a great catalyst for change in many workplaces – flexible and hybrid working patterns and more of a focus on health and wellbeing are becoming widely accepted. We truly hope this inclusive outlook extends to the invisible talent pool – those who have plenty to give but are treated differently or overlooked because of gaps on their CV or ill-health.”

The Astriid Challenge runs from 1st July and is sponsored by Salesforce, Twelve Tabulae, Advanced, and Cognizant. For more information, to register or to donate, please visit: https://www.astriidchallenge.org/ 12

Spotlight on Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) suppliers he Motability Scheme works with a network of expert Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) suppliers who play a crucial role in helping customers get mobile and enjoy worry-free motoring. You might already be aware of the role they play in converting vehicles into WAVs – but do you know all the other things that WAV suppliers look after during your lease?

T

Ordering and delivery First and foremost, WAV suppliers aim to help you choose the best vehicle for your needs. They will offer expert advice on everything from seating layouts to ground clearance and arrange a home demonstration to help you decide which WAV is right for you. Once you’ve decided which WAV you’d like to order, your WAV supplier will then place your application and get to work converting the standard, or ‘base’ vehicle, into a WAV. Depending on the complexity of the vehicle you’ve ordered, this can take several weeks or several months, but your WAV supplier will keep you up to date throughout the process. They will also liaise with the adaptation installer if you are also having adaptations fitted to your WAV. Once your vehicle is ready, they will deliver your WAV to your home address and give you another demonstration to make sure you are comfortable with your new vehicle. All of our dedicated WAV suppliers offer a nationwide service and can visit you at home for any demonstrations and test drives. You can find the full list of WAV suppliers and their contact details here.

Familiarisation check About a month after you take delivery of your new WAV, your WAV supplier will be back in touch to offer a free check at your home to make sure you are getting the most out of your new vehicle. The check will cover a reminder of how the features and functions of your new WAV work, and ensure it is meeting your needs and expectations. If you are having any difficulty getting used to your WAV, this is a great opportunity to get more comfortable and confident in using your new vehicle with the help of your WAV supplier.

Servicing, maintenance and repairs The next thing that your WAV supplier looks after for you is the routine servicing and maintenance of your vehicle.

As WAVs are converted from standard vehicles, you need to keep up with the manufacturers servicing schedule to keep the vehicle in good working order. Your WAV supplier may complete these services for you or arrange for your WAV to go to the vehicle manufacturer’s local dealer instead. For example, if you lease a converted Vauxhall Combo your WAV supplier may arrange for it to be taken to a Vauxhall dealer for the service. Three years into your lease, your WAV supplier will also arrange the first MOT on your WAV and will continue to arrange this annually until you return the vehicle.

Annual WAV check On top of arranging the regular servicing for your vehicle, your WAV supplier will also carry out an annual WAV check for the conversion elements of your WAV. This is carried out each year, usually at your home address, and will cover things like the ramp or lift and wheelchair tie downs to ensure they are working correctly and still meet your needs. If the supplier identifies that some of the conversion items need to be repaired, they will usually try take care of it there and then, but this is dependent on them having the parts they need with them at the time. If they need to order replacement parts, your supplier will arrange another convenient day with you to carry out the work and where possible will aim to complete the repairs at your home address. Outside of any scheduled servicing or maintenance, your WAV supplier should still be your first point of contact for any mechanical concerns that you might have with your vehicle.

We’ve got you covered The annual WAV check is just one of the ways that our all-inclusive lease aims to provide worryfree motoring. You can find out more about the other benefits of your lease and what to do if something goes wrong in our dedicated customer area at: motaility.co.uk/your-lease/car.

Remember, we’re here to help however we can, so if there are other things that you would like to talk to us about, just call when you are ready. Or you can request a call back at a time that’s convenient for you. You can reach one of the team on 0800 694 9000

ParalympicsGB join forces to launch From Home 2 The Games OR THE FIRST time ever UK Sport and the English Institute of Sport (EIS) are collaborating with ParalympicsGB, Team GB, and 19 Olympic and Paralympic sports to launch its latest search for the athletes of the future – From Home 2 The Games. The search is the 17th to be run nationally since 2007 by UK Sport, in partnership with the EIS and the UK’s Olympic and Paralympic high-performance community, with From Home 2 The Games the first to leverage the power of both ParalympicsGB and Team GB. From Home 2 The Games has been specifically designed to engage and encourage young people from all communities in the UK to explore their possibilities in Olympic and Paralympic sports that they may never have thought about getting involved with before, and consequently, discover untapped potential. It is seeking to reach and engage 15-34-year-olds with an impairment that makes them eligible to participate in Paralympic sport and 11-23-year-olds who are sporting or physically active to participate in Olympic sport Launched at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, potential athletes can now join From Home 2 The Games by completing three simple challenges and submitting their results at www.FromHome2TheGames.com. The challenges are: · For Paralympic sport, potential athletes need to complete a 20m push or sprint, a pick-up and throw and an open skill challenge. · For Olympic sport, potential athletes need to complete a 20m sprint, a broad jump and an open skill challenge. As part of the process, potential athletes will be encouraged to upload their scores and fill in a short form about themselves and their sporting background. Submissions will close on midnight of Monday 6 September and then be reviewed by a team of expert sport scientists and coaches. A select number of potential athletes will be invited to progress to the next stage of the process in the autumn with sessions held to further explore their opportunity to be a future Olympian or Paralympian and the possibility that a number will be selected to join

National Governing Body development programmes. From Home 2 The Games is digitally driven and working with seven athlete ambassadors who will utilise their channels to tell their own personal stories of engaging with sport, where their journey has taken them and some of the challenges they have faced along the way. The seven athlete ambassadors are Adam Peaty, Ali Jawad, Bianca Walkden, Laura Muir, Kadeena Cox, Kye Whyte and Tegan Vincent-Cooke. Cox herself first engaged with UK Sport and the EIS as a potential athlete during the 2014 campaign. Since 2007 UK Sport has worked in partnership with the English Institute of Sport and over 22 sports within the Olympic and Paralympic high-performance community to run 16 national searches for the athletes of the future, engaging more than 11,000 young people. Among those athletes to have successfully made their way through a recruitment campaign and onto National Lottery-funded World Class Programmes are number of Olympic and Paralympic champions and medallists including Lizzy Yarnold, Helen Glover, Lutalo Muhammad, Laura Deas, Jon-Allan Butterworth, Joanna Butterfield as well as Kadeena Cox.

Tanni’s View Baroness Grey-Thompson DBE writes for Ability Needs

Y DAUGHTER is of an age where the only internet technology that she can remember is really wi-fi. I try to explain dial-up to her and she thinks it is something out of the dark ages. I love technology because I still believe that the good outweighs the bad. I am a prolific Tweeter, much to my husbands amusement as he asks me frequently whether I tweet my every waking thought. My reply is, only some of my more sensible thoughts. I have not done any solid research in this area, but I am convinced that I get more responses to the strange food that I eat on trains as opposed to how I vote in the House of Lords. I don’t often get a lot of abuse on social media but it does come, and I accept that most of it is part of the deal for choosing to be involved in Politics. Much of it I can laugh off. I

had to be slightly amused when someone launched a tirade at me and then told me he felt ‘duty bound’ to tell me that I was ‘stoopid’. I don’t find it funny that anyone may struggle with spelling, but the rest of the communication was so beautifully crafted that it must have been an auto correct gone wrong But technology when it is used well is something to behold. My daughter takes something like Skype for granted. At her age we had a few sci-fi films that showed what one day might be possible. I am not sure that you could count Blakes Seven as part of that, although the ‘portable’ computer Orac (really just a perspex box with some coloured wires in it), could communicate and make decisions. I always thought it was strange that something that was meant to be amazingly intelligent, had a box that Ability Needs Magazine

AN_p20_p21 tanni_18-19_AN306_Tani's_view.QXD 01/07/2021 13:14 Page 2

you had to clip in to the side to make it work; surely a design fault. To think that people who use sign language can communicate around the world, without anyone needing to join in what could be a private conversation. With the flick of a button you can open and close your curtains, and carry out a myriad of tasks that even a few years ago were not possible. There is no doubt that the comparative cost of the development of technology has come down. I don’t want to even think about the price I paid for the first lap top that I bought back in the 1990’s. When I look at the capability that it had, it was considerably less than what I can do on my phone, it makes me shudder slightly. But how much of a barrier is the cost of technology to helping people do the things that they want to do? I have no problem in that companies need to make money, and a profit in order to be able to carry on developing equipment. There is a reason that they are called companies and not charities. I also have an unresolved issue with charities buying equipment for disabled people. It may be that this is the only way that disabled people can access some of the technology that will change their lives, but

then it fulfills the circle that disabled people need charity. I am personally conflicted because there are several charities that I work with to raise money for what I think are good causes. I will ponder that when I have more time. Disabled people are a significant group of people who are not online; several million in fact. In a world where you actually never have to go to a supermarket again, if you can afford the technology, the internet connection and be prepared to have everything from one shop, your life becomes different. But if you can’t afford the technology in the first place, then there is the potential that some disabled people will be left behind as technology develops and improves. But there are also fads in technology. Older versions of hardware are discarded as soon as the new one comes out. My parents generation didn’t have things that were disposable. You kept everything for a long time and recycled and reused. We cannot turn back the clock, and I wouldn’t want to. Technology in all its forms has the opportunity to radically change disabled people’s lives but they cannot be left behind in the process of change. And we won’t know it has happened until it is too late.

People with a learning disability and/or autism restrained over 100,000 times – equivalent to once every 12 minutes – in modern-day asylums housands of people with a learning disability and/or autism have been locked away in modern-day asylums at increased risk of abuse despite Government promises following a shocking hospital abuse scandal, survivors’ families and charities Mencap and the Challenging Behaviour Foundation (CBF) have revealed in a new casebook. At least 2,040 people are still locked away in mental health hospitals, often many miles from home. Families and charities warn that they are in danger of physical and emotional abuse. The charities’ analysis shows that there have been at least 102,010 recorded reports of restrictive practices, like physical restraint, chemical cosh and solitary confinement, since October 2018 when figures were first reported. This is equivalent to one used every 12 minutes. Mencap and CBF say these figures are likely to be ‘the tip of the iceberg’ due to low numbers of hospitals providing data, despite it being mandatory. The horrifying figures come ten years, this month, since a BBC Panorama undercover investigation at Winterbourne View Hospital, near Bristol, aired. Viewers were shocked to see footage of disabled people repeatedly being pinned down, slapped, dragged into showers while fully clothed, taunted and teased. Although the private hospital closed and several staff members were charged with criminal offences, families of the survivors have spoken out about their ongoing worries about these institutions. Six families have shared their own personal accounts of the impact on their loved ones after being locked away at Winterbourne View in a casebook to mark the anniversary. They make clear their outrage that people are still being admitted and poor treatment is still widespread. Despite Government promises to reduce the number of people locked away in these units, there have been 9,490 admissions – equivalent to 4 a day – since its Transforming Care Programme began in 2015. While some Winterbourne View survivors have flourished in their communities with the right social care support, many have experienced long-term side effects of being at Winterbourne View, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and meltdowns. Families live in fear that, without specialist social care support in the community to meet their loved one’s needs, they are at risk of readmission into an inpatient unit. Shockingly, some Winterbourne View survivors continue to be locked up in modern-day asylums today. Ann Earley, mother to Simon, now 47, who was at Winterbourne View hospital between 2010-2011, says: “When there was a shockwave of horror after the abuse of our sons and daughters was aired on national TV, we naively hoped that the promises made by government would change the system forever. Yet, here we are 10 years on still having to fight. “For many, the promised support failed to come, not just for our loved ones, but for their families who were also left traumatised by the events. Our loved ones were left struggling within a failing system and some were readmitted, commencing the sad, sorry cycle again and again. “The failure to extricate people entrenched within the system is pathetic, but it is the failure to stop others being pulled in that’s even worse. The dangers have been exposed, the failures noted, the appalling damage catalogued but still decision-makers and commissioners condemn our loved ones to a life of misery. Still other settings like Winterbourne Views are built and their beds filled. There should never be the opportunity for another Winterbourne View to be created under the guise of providing care.” The families have joined together to write a letter to the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, demanding action and deliver “real, enduring change” to stop this domestic human rights scandal. They, alongside Mencap and CBF, are calling for his Government to: Immediately publish the cross-government action plan on Transforming Care, which was promised in response to a 2019 Joint Committee on Human Rights’ report,9 and ensure it has a strong focus on preventing admission; Provide ongoing support for people and their families who have been traumatised by the inpatient system; Properly fund specialist social care in the community to stop more people from being admitted in the first place and get those who are still locked away out.

BESPOKE UNILITE WHEELCHAIR LIFT MADE FOR MOTORHOME WHEELCHAIR USER, that dreamed of exploring the UK and Europe in her motorhome, has realised her dreams with the installation of bespoke wheelchair lift. Leading provider of access solutions, Faiveley Vapor Ricon, assisted customer Birgitta Kronqvist, a carriage driving competitor from North Yorkshire, with a lightweight lift to prevent the vehicle exceeding its maximum legal weight and provide easy access whilst competing in the North Eastern Driving Trials. “Birgitta came to us with a really niche issue, but our team were easily able to find a lift solution that worked perfectly for her,” said Michael Dickinson, Sales Manager, Faiveley Vapor Ricon. “The lift that was fitted to her motor home when she purchased it was too heavy and cumbersome, and our Ricon UniLite lift was the perfect solution solving the issue Birgitta had experienced and unlocking the possibility of more travel when permitted to do so.” The lift design offers an aluminium construction and has electric power rather than hydraulic, further reducing the weight. In addition, it has added safety features including rollstops to prevent a wheelchair or scooter inadvertently falling from the platform. Furthermore, the controls for the lift are handily placed on the handrails for easy, independent operation. “A specialist installation was carried out to ensure the floor and ceiling supports were correctly situated for a motorhome installation and to allow easy access to the vehicle and also around the vehicle when the lift was not in use,” said Michael. Birgitta Kronqvist commented; “This has been a bit of a game changer for me and has made travelling even more enjoyable. The lift is made with beautiful simplicity and the weight is unbeatable when compared with other similar products. Having the option to take a friend with me has allowed me to enjoy some great times and I shall look forward to many more. The lift makes accessing my motor home so easy and its space saving credentials means that when it is not in use, it is not obtrusive in my home. When I arrive at parks people are often

astonished that I exit my home completely unaided! “The [FVR] team were so helpful and professional from my initial enquiry, and I commend them for making the entire process so simplistic and enjoyable. Their range of solutions means that wheelchair users can enjoy travelling and exploring with confidence; anyone who is a wheelchair user should check out what they have to offer.” Faiveley Vapor Ricon is proud to offer a wide range of domestic and commercial products to aid vehicular access for those with limited mobility. Accessibility & our high streets: why is this relevant to inclusion? UR GRANDPARENTS would probably be surprised and even shocked by how little human contact we have with others – in banks, post offices, shops, Council offices, and elsewhere, compared to their lifetimes. This fundamental change has been due to different factors, including a more recent and key factor, the Covid 19 pandemic. But this isn’t all down to Covid 19. The reduction in contact began years before the pandemic. Why is this relevant to access and inclusion? The simple fact is that as a species, humans need faceto-face contact in order to function. It’s relevant to our roles in society, our wellbeing and mental health, and to access the services available as consumers.

O

Changes in staffing & service delivery

that large mole on your back, via a smartphone. Whilst that change has been positive, nothing really replaces a face-to- face consultation. There may be matters of a more personal nature, which you would prefer to discuss face to face, in a consulting room.

Changing spaces need Changing Places The rise of Changing Places facilities at this time is not just a coincidence. Public toilets on stations and in transport hubs are either being closed or opening hours severely reduced ‘due to anti-social behaviour’. This is a real problem if you need the loo quickly. It disproportionally affects older people, people with Crohn’s disease, pregnant ladies, those with young children, and many disabled people. In many areas local authorities have removed all public toilets, relying on shopping mall developers to make provision as a condition of the planning application. But that logic fails when the developer goes into liquidation, as some have.

Commercial organisations, as well as public authorities, have been gradually reducing staffing of their shops, offices, and transport facilities, to save money. With the pandemic, this accelerated due to reduced footfall. Prior to the pandemic one major high street bank closed five established branches within a relatively limited geographical area, offering customers to access their services online. And these bank closures continue now. Of course, many transactions and services can be managed online. But while this has its benefits, services can fail due to their technical nature and IT hiccups. Trying to pay a bill online recently, required the use of my laptop, telephone, bank card, a security device, … and a lot of patience. If you are disabled or older, it may be that accessing online services is just not ideal.

Many of us have become used to online meeting platforms. Good as they are, many workers will become relatively isolated constantly working from home. Yes, there will be less traffic congestion, and a reduction in fares for commuting, but there is a price to pay in loss of human contact. And, with less opportunity of conversing with the person next to you, we are slowly but surely losing the art of face-to-face conversation. When personal meetings are again possible, these should be encouraged.

Retail closures

The mass closure of department stores, shops and other retail premises limits our choice and the high street, post Covid 19, is likely to look very different in years to come. As centrally based retail and offices close or move out-of-town to retail parks where rents and rates are cheaper, additional travel is now more likely. This means more use of cars or public transport. Older and disabled people living in areas with only one or two buses per day will find this a challenge.

The question is, who will be monitoring the mental health of those working from home and online? Who will monitor the mental health of retired and older people, who can’t get out? Who will monitor the accessibility of the provision of goods and services to disabled people, and the impact on their lives? Digitalisation may have saved us all during the pandemic, but it also brings a considerable loss of human personal contact. And I can’t help but wonder, what will save us from that loss?

Bidets brought into 21st Century b OES your bathroom have the right equipment available to maximise independence? Here, Stuart Reynolds, Head of Product and Marketing at AKW, discusses why this is an important question to ask, particularly in the context of toileting. Promoting dignity and long-term health Making toileting as straightforward as possible is key to promoting not only dignity but a person’s long-term health. This is because those that find toileting difficult are prone to limiting the amount of liquids they consume, in order to reduce the number of times they e need to use the toilet, particularly when they need assistance and perceive a loss of dignity. Limiting liquid intake in this way however is dangerous, can actually increase the frequency of visits to the toilet and can lead to dehydration, with older people being particularly vulnerable to this.

D

Could a bidet be the solution? Bidets can play a key role in helping those with disabilities achieve toileting independence for longer and are ideal for use in home and care settings. However, it is advised that advice is sought from an occupational therapist or appropriate healthcare professional to ensure a bidet will meet a person’s ongoing needs.

AKW Bidet The Solution to Intimate Care

21st Century bidets Bidets have evolved to offer more flexibility than ever before. Free-standing bidets have become less common, and a less permanent solution enables the provision of more cost-effective flexibility. Two modern options are built-in or two-in-one bidets and an overtoilet seat attachment. Benefits of seat-like attachment bidets Ideal for existing toilets seat-like attachment bidets are cost effective to buy and install compared to other options (cost and installation is typically less than £1,000). The solution is also transferable, so can be removed and refitted elsewhere if a person moves home. Where space is a premium the seat-like attachment also overcomes the need for additional floor space in the bath, shower, wet or washroom. Wide range of functions AKW’s latest intimate care seat-like attachment bidet offers users:

Eddie It’s all in the mind? RE YOU OLD ENOUGH, or brave enough, to admit to remembering “Little Joe”? He was one of the Cartwright family in a dusty old TV cowboy series called Bonanza. In my memory it was on every week, and I cannot recall that anything of any importance ever happened although it was reassuringly entertaining to a growing boy.

A

!

!

I would like you to meet another little Joe. This one is our grandson. Although we must confess to a certain amount of bias, with great respect, he has it over the dashing Hollywood version. Our one is 4 years old with golden blonde hair, endless energy and is bursting with fun. He came wandering into the kitchen the other day holding a small piece of cellophane. He held it up for us to see and declared “Look, I have found some invisible rubbish”. He brought the proverbial house I down! I find it heartening that one comment can bring so much warmth, pleasure, and fun into a routine day. It is even more striking that this pearl of wit and wisdom came, in total innocence, from a small boy. It certainly set my mind into action. If you are W inclined, and you have a copy of the King James Bible handy, you will find in Psalms 8:2 the famous quotation, “Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength.” Well Joe certainly gave us some strength and caused us to reflect and enjoy a precious moment together. We sadly saw little of Joe or any of our grandchildren during the past year owing to this W coronavirus. Joe and his lovely family live quite close so we managed to see them, albeit for very brief moments. The duration of our reunions were frustratingly limited to conversing through their living room window. These visits were, for many months, also restricted by the British winter weather! The rest of our family are spread around the country 32

and, as a result, we were not able to see them at all. We did try “video” sessions and whilst these are fine, they just ain’t the same! We are not special or more disadvantaged than anyone else. One of the most irksome by-products of this freak event is that everyone has been challenged one way or another. Daily life is gradually improving, but we have yet to completely shake off the effects of the wretched COVID pandemic. Our little Joe`s shrewd observation made us consider the plight of millions around the world who are grappling with its repercussions. In truth, many of these are just as invisible to us as we soldier through our own daily routines. Here, in our own back yard, the elderly and physically disadvantaged are often finding themselves isolated and lonely. Lockdowns and tier systems have understandably added anxiety and stress. It is very easy to become depressed as a result. It can be difficult to maintain some perspective through these testing times. Plenty of self-motivation is required to avoid becoming lonely and downcast. It is also more than possible to become lonely even when surrounded by friends or family. Mental illness is becoming as popular a subject on my radio as the weather. Having spent my working life in the mobility industry I have been privileged to meet dozens of people experiencing the effects of all sorts of horrible debilitating diseases. I was, and still am, amazed at how many of these people cope with the physical aspects of their plight through their strong mental capacity. This strength was also invisible to the naked eye. The flip side of this is, sadly, that many people are not naturally emotionally strong. It is easy to slip into a

Eddie Peacock has worked in the mobility industry for “rather a long time”. mood of not bothering to eat well, exercise or even maintain basic levels of hygiene. Developing this state of mind is the work of a truly invisible enemy.

Maybe this is where we can learn from our Joe. There are definite benefits in looking at things from a fresh perspective. After all everything is seen as fresh when you are 4 years old. There are, perhaps, plenty of stimulants to keep us going and many of them can easily become invisible if we fail to see them; Sunrises, sunsets, clouds, frost (best if observed from indoors!) If you are lucky

the UK. In recent years he held the post of Marketing Manager for Mobility which also involved supporting and working with the BHTA. He has now retired and is looking forward to finding the time to perform useful tasks in the industry, playing drums in a blues band, travelling and most important, being silly with his grandchildren.

enough to have a garden; squirrels, birds or maybe even next door`s cat. From the comfort of your favourite armchair in the living room there are puzzles, the radio, books and, of course, plenty of TV programmes. Even COVID need not be a totally negative experience This pandemic has exposed manifold examples of kindness and generosity. Neighbours have kept an eye on neighbours. There have been countless acts of kindness from shopping to collecting medicines. Even a regular weekly 20 minute visit makes a difference to a person living alone. We should all share some level of responsibility. We can all keep a closer eye on neighbours, friends and family. Just before we were invaded by the pandemic the much-abused BBC broadcast a documentary about “Britain`s greatest generation”. These were my parent`s generation, who lived through World War 2 and the extreme deprivations which ensued. That little fracas actually lasted for 6 years and was followed by a decade of austerity which, with great respect, puts our present predicament into some perspective. There is little to be gained by simply comparing the numbers of dead. WW2 450,00, COVID 127,000 (currently) but the effect on daily life back then was staggering by comparison. How about, for example a weekly butter ration of 2 ounces? If that doesn’t shock, how about 1 egg per person per week and 2 ounces of tea? Even after the war, bacon was rationed to 3 ounces per week. Sugar rationing only ended in 1953, 8 years after the war had finished. There were certainly no Big Macs on offer back then and, dare I mention it, obesity was not as common. Such comparisons deserve more detailed analysis but the overall point I am trying to make is that their spirit was recognised as an invisible and powerful force. We could learn a lesson from these recent ancestors when grizzling about a lack of holidays abroad. Perhaps we should cheer ourselves up with a good dose of “invisible” medicines……. Anyway, I am off to visit our little Joe. I need some focus and uplift in my life, and he is just the man for the job. FAQs from the Motability Scheme regarding COVID-19 (Coronavirus) S THE COVID-19 SITUATION changes we understand that customers have a number of questions. We are continuing to update this page regularly to ensure we cover the most frequently asked customer questions. Dealership showrooms across the UK are open and able to offer test drives and face-to-face appointments to help you choose your next car. As they were closed for a number of months earlier this year, dealerships are currently very busy and expected to remain so for the coming weeks. If you are planning to visit a dealership, we recommend contacting them now to make an appointment. Please be reassured that all of our dealers will adhere to social distancing measures and do all they can to create a COVID-19 safe environment for you. If you are shielding or do not feel comfortable visiting a dealership at this time, your dealer may still be able to manage your application without your needing to be at the dealership. However, this will be down to individual dealerships and whether they have capacity to manage your application, so please contact your dealer directly to discuss this. Our Customer Services team is currently dealing with a high volume of calls, we hope you find the answer to your question here. If you do need to call, we ask for your support if you are unable to get through to us as quickly as usual.

VEHICLE HANDOVERS AND NEW APPLICATIONS I am an existing customer. When can I place an application for my next car? If you are in the final three months of your lease or have had your lease extended due to the COVID-19 situation, you can order your next vehicle now. Please contact your dealer to make an appointment to discuss your next car. I am an existing customer, but do not want to place an order for my next car at the moment, what are my options? Where possible, we recommend customers start their search in the usual way and place an order in the last three months of their lease. Social distancing and disrupted supply chains for manufacturers mean factories are producing fewer cars than usual which may mean that deliveries of some new cars will take longer than usual. Our current price list (until 30 June 2021) includes over 500 cars with an Advance Payment of less than £500 – over 200 of these cars have no Advance Payment and a further 50 cars are available for less than your higher rate mobility allowance. I have a Motability Scheme car; how can I get help if I’m in temporary financial need owing to the COVID-19 situation? Until 31 July 2021, Motability Scheme customers who are experiencing temporary and exceptional

34

financial need in relation to COVID-19 are able to access an advance of the £600 Good Condition Bonus (GCB) usually paid at the end of a lease. This GCB payment can be brought forward to provide support during the COVID-19 situation, ensuring that customers in need have access to money during a period when they may need it most. Please note that customers who choose to take this payment early would not therefore receive a further GCB at the end of contract – a point when some customers like to put this towards an Advance Payment on their new car. The advance of the GCB can only be paid once per customer. My lease has been automatically extended for six months, what will happen with my Good Condition Bonus? The Good Condition Bonus (GCB) will be paid when you hand back your car to the dealer. If you are in line to receive the bonus, there is no need to contact us – we will automatically send you a cheque within 28 days of the car being returned. I was due to be reassessed for my allowance but the DWP have suspended my assessment for 3 months; can I stay in my current vehicle? If your lease is due to end before your reassessment, please contact us on 0300 456 4566 so we can apply a lease extension for you. The Department for Work continued on page 36

INDUSTRY INSIGHT

Time to end the cancel culture

Angus Long PART from the pandemic, the other issue dominating the news over the past year has been the threat to freedom of speech and the rise of what is being referred to as the ‘cancel culture.’ Cancel culture is an overarching phrase that covers various forms of ostracism where people who express views, ideas or actions that other people or groups disagree with are attacked and often forced out of social or professional circles via onslaughts on social and mainstream media or in person. Occasionally, it has also led to threats of violence, physical assaults and in some cases mass protests and civil disobedience. I have written before about the rise in extreme political correctness and wokism and how, in my view, it is dividing society rather than uniting it. Freedom of speech is an intrinsic component to

A

38

a free and democratic society. “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it” is a well-known phrase often quoted by defenders of free speech. However, these days it does appear that there are serious threats to that freedom. For those on the receiving end of cancel culture, the consequences can lead to insults, loss of reputation, loss of work and in some cases threats of violence. The rise of social media, and other digital platforms, has made it much easier for proponents of the cancel culture to attack their targets and whip up widespread support to join in. No doubt, too, the fact that most people have been confined to their homes during the pandemic has also led to an increase in use of social media and thus fanned the flames of attacks on the marks of those the wokes wish to cancel. Most of those on the receiving end of the cancel culture activists tend to be celebrities and Ability Needs Magazine

AN_p38_p39_industry_10_AN406_IL_Scotland.QXD 29/06/2021 09:26 Page 2

key public figures. Some well-known examples include Harry Potter author, JK Rowling, who was attacked for her remarks on gender that seemingly outraged the trans community. More recently, GMTV presenter Piers Morgan was attacked for saying he didn’t believe the allegations of Royal racism by Meghan Markle during the Oprah Winfrey interview. His refusal to apologise and stand by his view led to a salvo of online abuse, threats and the largest ever number of complaints to Ofcom. Morgan chose to resign rather than recant. The likes of JK Rowling and Piers Morgan are wealthy enough, and tough enough, to weather the attacks on them. Indeed, many celebrities and public figures acknowledge that being famous and well known you often have to take the rough with the smooth when it comes to public relations. However, these days more and more of the victims and targets of the aggressive wokes and cancel culture activists are not well known celebrities but ordinary folk just trying to get by. People like the Religious Education (RE) teacher at Batley Grammar School. This teacher has become the target of angry protests after showing pupils a copy of the Charlie Hebdo cartoon image of the prophet Mohammed during one of his lessons. Charlie Hebdo is well known for creating controversial cartoons that some people find obtuse. Many Muslims consider it blasphemous to visually depict the Prophet Mohammed. As word spread, the protests and anger intensified to the point that the teacher and his family were receiving death threats and have had to go into hiding. While we must acknowledge that images of the prophet can be deemed offensive to some, we need to put some sensible perspective to this. From what I have read, it appears this RE teacher Ability Needs Magazine

was trying to provide some sensible education on different religions and differing types of blasphemy for the children. No doubt, hoping they will take on board the key points of the lesson and thus be more tolerant and accepting of others’ beliefs. I believe his motives were wholly genuine and innocent with no intention to deliberately offend. Given this, it does seem that the protests seem to be wholly disproportionate. The teacher has been accused by community leaders of “sadistic behaviour” and some protesters have said they will return to the school gates every day until this teacher is sacked. I would argue that those advocating harm to him and his family are themselves guilty of disgraceful, unacceptable and extremely offensive behaviour. In a decent and tolerant society, there is no place for such overt hatred. The head teacher’s decision to issue an unequivocal apology before any investigation has even started, let alone concluded, was wrong and likely to fuel further unrest and demands the teacher be punished. It was also disappointing the teaching unions have been equally craven by failing to support this teacher at his hour of need. But this is the fundamental problem with the militant wokes; they believe only their point of view is right and no one should be able to question it and those that do are often verbally and physically abused. That is deeply concerning as the right to freedom of speech is the bedrock of a fair and decent civilisation. To the cancel culture wokes, it’s not so much “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it” but more ‘I disapprove of what you say and will stop you from saying it”. ShopMobility UK launches new accessible website for customers and scheme members ShopMobility UK, the nationwide network of charitable/local authority centres that loan out mobility scooters and wheelchairs for shopping and leisure activities, has launched a new website for easier access to information and membership services. https://www.shopmobilityuk.org/

The new streamlined ShopMobility UK website is easy to use for both service users and scheme members

ShopMobility UK has recently become part of Driving Mobility – the nationwide charity, supported by the Department for Transport, which accredits assisted driving and mobility assessments centres so elderly and disabled people can gain or retain independence. This new leadership has led to a ShopMobility rebrand and reinvigoration of its equipment loan services across the UK. Part of its new communication strategy to service users and centre managers has involved the development of a new website. This website now reflects the modern approach of the scheme supported by clear, easy-to-understand information which explains the service alongside a simple ShopMobility centre locator. There is also a trade login area for scheme members so they can access useful resources. Most ShopMobility centres hire equipment such as manual wheelchairs, powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters. These reliable products ensure people with restricted mobility or walking difficulties can enjoy independence outdoors, particularly around shops and leisure facilities. Hire services are

low cost or sometimes free to all ages of people – representing an essential and affordable solution for many especially during the current pandemic. The new ShopMobility UK website includes a topical news section which provides an opportunity for centres to share their updates and learn from other scheme members. This engaging content is being supported by managed social media aimed at service users and centre managers – focused on increasing awareness of services through a collective approach. Edward Trewhella, Driving Mobility CEO, said: “It has been exciting times for service users and scheme members since we evolved from The National Federation of ShopMobility (NFSUK). Now known as ShopMobility UK, we are delighted to see renewed enthusiasm from our scheme members as they embrace change and work closely with our dedicated national coordinator. The new streamlined website perfectly reflects our rejuvenated approach and I would encourage all with an interest in accessibility and personal mobility, to engage with us and share our news.”

Creating better lives for people with disabilities and their carers OR PEOPLE with impairments, accessibility is key. Regardless of whether it is in their private home, public spaces or professional health care environments, the interior needs to take special needs into account. Sadly, this is often not the case. In many cases, wheelchair users have difficulties reaching the tap in the kitchen and too little space to manoeuvre the wheelchair in the bathroom. People with reduced mobility struggle to reach the upper kitchen cabinet contents and need assistive aids to use the toilet. These are just a few of the everyday challenges that people with impairments face. Using clever solutions can make a world of difference in these situations. Imagine if there was plenty of room under the kitchen table, or if the upper cabinets could move downwards within reaching range for seated users. And what if the bathroom was equipped with aids that enabled people with impairments to use the washbasin and toilet with a minimum of assistance?

WELCOME TO SCOOTER STORE LIMITED cooter Store Limited is an established company with over twentyfive years’ experience, which has become very popular especially with the elderly and disabled community nationwide. The concept of a small, easy to use store for securing mobility vehicles has been extremely well received by many local authorities. Housing Associations, County, City and Borough Councils as well as charitable organisations have installed Scooter Stores throughout the country with great success; whilst thousands have been exported to Europe. This has solved storage and independence issues for many people. In our experience we have found that many people who use mobility scooters find it very difficult getting their scooter in and out of their property without help or assistance. Storing them in living rooms and hallways is not always ideal as they take up a lot of room and can cause fire hazards. The scooter store itself is simple and was designed in response to a demand from the public. The standard unit is 1525mm long x 1220mm wide x 1070mm high and made of 2mm steel the store comes in a green finish. Bespoke scooter stores can be manufactured to different sizes to suit your specific mobility scooter requirements. Our Scooter Stores are delivered flat packed for installation to inaccessible places and are installed by our fully trained engineers. Our scooter stores are all push button controlled and fully lockable. A socket for charging the scooter is provided within the store. The Scooter Store requires very little maintenance. The Scooter Store is such a marvellous alternative which is secure and theft proof, and because it is so easy to use independence can be greatly improved for mobility vehicle users.

Dance Dosti: Multi-lingual, dance-on-demand for people with sight loss UNDED by the Vision Foundation, Dance Dosti is supporting people from a South Asian background with sight loss to be active through dance. The first phase of the project is Dance Dosti digital – a website containing over 100 dance sessions in English, Bengali, Gujarati and Hindi. All sessions are delivered by South Asian dancers, with a choice of seated and standing dance, and video and audio formats for different abilities. Step Change Studios Founder Rashmi Becker, who was recognised with an MBE for services to disabled people in the Queen's Birthday Honours List said: “The idea for Dance Dosti came from seeing the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on people from certain demographics. People from a South Asian background and disabled people have reported greater isolation and inactivity. As an inclusive dance provider, we know the positive difference dance makes to our quality of life, irrespective of age or ability. It benefits both body and mind. “Our free digital programme is designed as short sessions that can be fitted in to daily life. We want to support people to enjoy learning to dance, to be active at

home, and to transition to creative and physical activity outside the home.” The Dance Dosti project will promote physical activity and use the benefits of dance to bring people together and improve health and wellbeing. The project combines different elements including home and community-based dance, engaging local partners and volunteers to support participation, and providing advice for dance and fitness providers on inclusive practice. A series of free community-based programmes will be piloted from Autumn 2021. These accessible sessions will be tailored to local communities, supporting blind and partially sighted people to learn to dance and to develop their potential. Dance Dosti will monitor the impact of dance on a range of measures including mental and physical health, confidence, friendships, increasing independence and learning new skills. Learning from the programme will inform the development of more diverse, inclusive opportunities to be creative and active. To take part in Dance Dosti digital visit: www.dancedosti.com

disabled loo in the carpark area. We headed on up the coast with the intention of calling in at Craster. This is a small fishing harbour and is the place from which boat trips to the Farne Islands leave. It is also the home of Craster Kippers! The carpark is on your right as you approach and has adequate disabled parking. This is the nearest parking, so leave your car, cross the road and follow the pavement down a steep hill to the small harbour. This little harbour with its famous lifeboat station is extremely picturesque – don’t forget the camera! If you follow the road past the harbour and up the hill, you will find a pub and just opposite is Craster Kippers! These are world famous and I strongly recommend taking a couple home for your supper.

We now returned to the car and set off for the last of the three coastal castles! This one is still lived in and open to the public. It is also disabled friendly with parking near the gatehouse. Known locally as Mighty Bamburgh, this is a truly magnificent pile on top of its hill and well worth a visit in its own right. But it is not what we have come to see! Nor is it the Grace Darling Museum, even if it is disabledfriendly. No, we have come for something only locals know about, Bamburgh beach. Dog requires a run! Sorry but this is not accessible by wheelchair and would be difficult for the walking disabled as you have to traverse a wide strip of sand dunes to reach it. Still, please enjoy the photographs instead. From here, follow road signs to the A1 and Alnwick for the road home.

Penguin Random House boosts RNIB library with thousands more audio books NE OF the world’s largest publishers, Penguin Random House has bolstered the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) Talking Books Library by donating all its audio books to the charity. The new collection currently includes around 6,000 titles and will be gradually added to RNIB’s Talking Book platform in instalments on an ongoing basis. Amongst the books to be uploaded are novels from some of the world’s best-selling authors, such as James Patterson, Lee Child and Sophie Kinsella. Anna Tylor, Chair of RNIB and a regular RNIB Online Library user, said: “I am thrilled that Penguin Random House is boosting RNIB’s library collection. Talking Books are essential for thousands of blind and partially sighted people across the country who, like me, enjoy getting stuck into a good story. “In the last year alone, we have provided 1.33 million Talking Books to blind and partially sighted

O

people, so it’s fantastic that such a prestigious publishing house has gifted us its entire cache of audio books to grow our collection.” Richard Lennon, Publisher, Penguin Random House Audio said: “At Penguin we are determined to make sure that everyone has access to books and that the joy of reading is truly accessible to all. We’re excited to be able to connect our books and authors with new audiences through the RNIB’s brilliant Talking Books service.” RNIB produced the first audio book – or ‘Talking Book’ – in 1935. Since then, the charity has provided Talking Books in various formats to blind and partially sighted people across the UK for free, recording them in its own studios in Camden, London. Last year, RNIB launched a new online library offering people with sight loss instant access to thousands of free books in formats they can read – including audio. The library now has 33,000 Talking Books in its collection.

NOW is the time!

AM SURE that readers and subscribers to Ability Needs Magazine will agree that since March 2020, our lifestyles, health and wellbeing have been affected in many different ways by the Covid Pandemic. During the last 16 months I have had the opportunity to be involved in numerous digital meetings with senior academic personnel all of whom are qualified in medicine, nursing or social care and two particular subjects have been raised during these discussions. Namely those of isolation and loneliness and how these can have a serious impact on physical and mental health, especially to disabled and elderly people. Since MASIS became a Registered Charity in 2012 it has continued to focus on the importance of social inclusion and equality. The homepage of www.masis.org.uk clearly emphasises this message. MASIS has also continually attempted to network and collaborate with numerous relevant manufacturing and service providing companies and organisations. Regrettably as the subjects of social inclusion and equality do not have a medical condition or ‘visible’ disability attached to them the level of interest shown has until recently attracted minimal interest. It was in early May 2021 that MASIS’s website took on a totally new image and more prominent search engine results arising (indirectly supported by the Google

I

Ads Grant awarded to the charity in 2016). MASIS, (through its professional service providers and associated partnerships) can now offer business to business finance services, personal finance solutions, health and safety related expertise and products for use within home and workplace locations, adapted fashionwear for the disabled sector and specialised construction services capable of undertaking adaptations to housing or installing free-standing units allowing elderly and disabled people to live more independently. More professional relationships are wanted, especially with companies associated with the motor trade. The government funded motoring facility for disabled people does not address the needs of all such individuals or their carers and effective personal transportation solutions can help reduce isolation and loneliness. A NO-LOSE RESULT. Proceeds from the purchase of products and services available from MASIS will be re-invested into supporting community-based projects for disabled people. THANKYOU. LOOKING FOR PARTNER, INVESTOR or MOBILITY COMPANY/MANUFACTURER Hello, my name is Andrew Huntley. I have recently designed a product that I feel would greatly improve the independence of power chair/electric wheelchair users who suffer from disabling hand conditions.

In early September I was informed by my patent solicitor that the UKIPO had completed their own worldwide patent search which also returned no match so at this stage I am very confident that a patent will be granted. I am therefore looking for a sole partner, investor or mobility company/manufacturer to help bring my Idea to the disabled community. If you are interested I would very much like to introduce my idea to you in the way of a professionally designed prototype with visualisation boards and would welcome the opportunity to meet with you and discuss further. Disability Awareness Day (DAD) 2021 HE organising team behind the UK’s largest voluntary led pan disability exhibition have been closely monitoring updates on guidance relating to COVID-19 Coronavirus. Event co-ordinator Dave Thompson MBE DL said, “The health and safety of our visitors, exhibitors and our team is always our number one priority. This is particularly important given the communities that DAD involves. After consulting with Public Health and our Local Authorities Events Safety Team to ensure we can follow national and local guidance, we are pleased to confirm that our 30th annual event will go ahead on Sunday 12th September”. The aim of this year’s event is to promote independent living through the theme “It’s what disabled people can do that matters”. #DAD2021 exhibitors will showcase solutions supporting independent living and mobility, with equipment, products, transport, employment, education, training, health and social care, leisure activities, alongside over 100 charities/support groups. Most of this year’s exhibitors will be housed in a huge, tented village of marquees, which will be supported by a

Sports Zone, a Centre Arena, a huge Performing Arts Marquee and a children’s play area. On the day, visitors can gain an insight into the help and support that is available locally, regionally and nationally. They can “have a go” at sports activities including basketball, fencing, boccia, football, rugby league, boxing, cricket, tennis and scuba diving in the on-site pool. For those looking for a more relaxed day we will have a fantastic line-up of talent in the Arts Marquee with some of the UK’s leading disabled artists, or they can sit alongside the Centre Arena watching dog display teams, birds of prey, bands and sports demonstrations. Children can visit the funfair rides or accessible onsite zoo, crazy golf, high ropes and pitch and putt. Support services at #DAD2021 will include a free accessible Park and Ride service, free accessible buses from Warrington Town Centre, a free scooter and wheelchair loan service with trained enablers, British Sign Language interpreters, additional unisex wheelchair accessible toilets and over 100 trained stewards and helpers.

CJ Conversions - vehicle conversion specialists -

J CONVERSIONS are Lincolnshire's largest leading vehicle conversion specialists. With over 30 years experience, John founded the company back in 2003 and today leads a team of specialists in vehicle adaptations and conversions. Our technicians adhere to strict safety standards and all our installations and modifications are carried out in a manner consistent with the highest guidelines available in the industry. We fit a wide range of products which can help with many different situations.

C

PUSH/PULL BRAKE/ACCELERATORS

SWIVEL SEATS

The push/pull hand controls are usually operated with the fingertips while the thumb is on the wheel, allowing users to turn the vehicle and operate their acceleration and braking at the same time. Pulling operates the acceleration and Pushing operates the brake. There are options of an indicator switch on the top of hand controls, and we could also fit a Pedal Guard to ensure any pedals aren’t accidentally pressed.

Swivel Seats are used for getting in and out of the vehicle by those who struggle with it. They are only available for specific vehicles, so we would need to check the specs of your vehicle for you. We would recommend 3-door cars if you are looking to have a Swivel Seat fitted, purely because the door openings are so much larger than 5-door cars! The swivel seats are available manually (operated by a lever at the side of the seat) or Electronically (operated by remote). We also have the option of a Turny Evo which is programmed to move/swivel out of the vehicle at the optimum angles to allow for the most room. This seat actually comes out over the vehicle sill and can lower down – making it a great option for vans and 4×4’s!

LEFT FOOT ACCELERATORS Left Foot Accelerators can be fitted to most vehicles however we will need to check their availability first. The most common system we fit is a Twin Flip Folding Left Foot Accelerator which allows you to flip a new accelerator on the left hand down, in turn flipping the old right foot accelerator back up. This allows for use of the vehicle with and without the adaptation. These are most commonly fitted for drivers who prefer to drive with their left foot, or who have little or no mobility in their right leg.

any of the UK’s 23 million homes are more than 50 years old and therefore weren’t designed to todays access standards. A stairlift or a domestic home elevator can play a key role in improving people’s standard of living. They can alleviate stress and rescue anxiety whilst conserving energy for other activities. Stairs can be tiring or physically difficult and, in some cases, can exacerbate medical conditions for many. Installing a stairlift or elevator can dramatically improve people’s enjoyment of their home. Once a stairlift or elevator is installed our customers report that they wished they had done it sooner. The demand for labour-saving devices that support home living is increasing as more people want to stay in their own homes for longer. Modern stairlifts and domestic elevators are sleek, easy to use and are no longer the clunky dated designs that you might imagine. A stairlift or domestic elevator is a fantastic
