I joined A&K Sanctuary in 2002, and worked as a mechanic, a camp driver, a stores man and an accounts clerk. But my dream remained to work as a driver-guide. I am glad that the company sponsored me for all the required guiding courses and I am now so proud to be the Head Driver Guide. An excellent time for safari in Tanzania, with herds of wildebeest and zebra crossing the southern Serengeti – attracting plenty of predators too. January and February are also prime months to visit South Africa for winter sun. Cape Town experiences dry, hot weather with cooling sea breezes – ideal for exploring the city – while in March, Kruger’s rivers are teeming with wildlife at the end of the rainy season.

Kitirua Plains Lodge, an A&K Sanctuary, Kenya Our brand-new A&K Sanctuary is located on a vast private concession beside Kenya’s Amboseli National Park, with views of Mount Kilimanjiro. The architecturally striking design is inspired by Maasai principles of living in harmony with nature.

Apr | May | June As this is the traditional ‘long rains’ season in East Africa, many camps and lodges in Kenya and Tanzania are closed. However, as the weather changes, the Maasai Mara in Kenya is a great option in May. Wildlife viewing is still excellent, with opportunities to spot some of the region’s quieter and more elusive species. In Southern Africa, Victoria Falls is in full flood, offering some of its most dramatic views of the year.

Ngorongoro Crater Camp, an A&K Sanctuary, Tanzania The newly refreshed Ngorongoro Crater Camp is designed to maximise intimacy, atmosphere and exceptional game viewing, with ten brand-new tents overlooking the largest inactive volcanic caldera on earth, home to more than 25,000 animals.

Gorilla Forest Lodge, an A&K Sanctuary, Uganda The recently redesigned Gorilla Forest Lodge is the only luxury lodge inside the gates of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, making it the perfect setting for a life-changing face-to-face meeting with gorillas (they have also been known to visit the grounds). It was named in Travel + Leisure’s Best New Resorts and 100 Best Hotels of 2026.

“Africa is a destination like no other. It has a spirit of its own, and a remarkable contrast of ecosystems, cultures and wildlife that live long in the memory and the heart. One of the best times of year for a safari. Visit Tanzania to see herds gather in their millions in the Serengeti before heading to the Maasai Mara from August. In South Africa, whales arrive along the coast to nurse their calves, while Rwanda and Uganda offer prime gorilla trekking experiences. It is also the optimum time to visit the Okavango Delta in Botswana, when seasonal floodwaters attract abundant wildlife.

Oct | Nov | Dec Game viewing remains excellent in Tanzania’s Serengeti, while migratory birds return from November as the bush turns lush and green. Meanwhile, the rains at Botswana’s Makgadikgadi Pans sees a remarkable transformation, bringing the zebra migration – at 500km, one of the continent’s longest land migrations. Gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda remains a highlight at this time of year, too.

In Bhutan, the festival of Thimphu Tshechu occurs in September as the rice fields turn golden for harvest.
