We are Bríd O’Rourke and Denise O’Connor, Irish primary school teachers and authors of the BiDee Phonics series.
BiDee Phonics are fully decodable readers which follow a structured scope and sequence, each one introducing new sounds as well as revising previous sounds.
With over 15 years of experience in early childhood education, we developed BiDee Phonics because we found it difficult to source readers which were both decodable readers and had engaging stories.
BiDee Phonics include bright, eye-catching illustrations by the talented Philip Cullen. He captures the quirkiness of the characters while also telling the story through his illustrations.

Each reader contains pre-and postreading activities to aid comprehension.
BiDee Phonics follows the sequence of Jolly Phonics up to the letter ‘J’.

BiDee Phonics are engaging and humorous stories with appealing illustrations which provide rich stimulus for discussions.
BiDee Phonics are sequential and follow a carefully designed scope and sequence, each one introducing new sounds as well as revising previous sounds.

While BiDee doesn’t follow the UFLI Scope and Sequence, they can be used alongside it.
Scan the QR code below to find out how to align the books to UFLI.

Is múinteoir bunscoile i nGaelscoil
Eoghain Uí Thuairisc, Ceatharlach, é Ríoghán Seager, agus is é a cheap agus a d’fhorbair an clár 'Fónaic le Fís'.
Trína obair i seomraí ranga lán-Ghaeilge, d’aithin sé an gá le clár fónaice córasach, follasach atá bunaithe ar thaighde don Ghaeilge. Clár a théann níos faide ná aithint fuaimeanna amháin agus a thacaíonn le páistí fuaimeanna a aistriú go léitheoireacht le muinín.
Ríoghán Seager is a primary school teacher in Gaelscoil Eoghain Uí Thuairisc, Carlow, and the author of the ‘Fónaic le Fís’ programme. Through his work in Irish-medium classrooms, he identified a clear need for a systematic, explicit, and research-based phonics programme for Gaeilge. One that goes beyond sound recognition and supports children in transferring sounds into reading.

Mee t the author!
seo a rugadh ‘Fónaic le Fís’. Tá ‘Fónaic le Fís’ ag dul ó neart go neart ó shin agus tá sé in úsáid ar fud na tíre anois. Molann ‘Dyslexia Ireland’ an clár ar a gcúrsaí oiliúna do mhúinteoirí bunscoile.
‘Fónaic le Fís’ was originally developed in Ríoghán’s own classroom for personal use. During a whole-school Gaeilge training session, he was encouraged to seek publication and bring his vision to life. 'ABC School Supplies' recognised this vision and began working with Ríoghán to address gaps in available Irish-language phonics resources, and it was through this collaboration that ‘Fónaic le Fís’ was born.

Forbraíodh ‘Fónaic le Fís’ ar dtús i seomra ranga Ríogháin dá úsáid phearsanta féin. Le linn seisiúin oiliúna Gaeilge ina scoil, moladh dó an clár a chur i gcló agus a fhís a thabhairt chun beatha. D’aithin 'ABC School Supplies' an fhís seo agus thosaigh siad ag obair i gcomhar le Ríoghán chun bearnaí sna hacmhainní fónaice Gaeilge a bhí ar fáil a líonadh, agus ba as an gcomhpháirtíocht

Cuireann Fónaic le Fís dul chun cinn soiléir agus struchtúrtha ar fáil i dteagasc fuaimeanna. Leanann an clár scóip agus seicheamh atá deartha go cúramach, ina múintear fuaimeanna nua go follasach agus ina ndéantar athbhreithniú leanúnach ar fhoghlaim roimhe seo chun máistreacht agus coinneáil fadtéarmach a chinntiú.
‘Fónaic le Fís’ offers a clear and structured progression of sounds. The programme follows a carefully designed scope and sequence, explicitly introducing new sounds while continuously revising previously taught ones to support mastery and long-term retention.

Grounded in evidence-based literacy instruction and aligned with the Primary Language Curriculum, ‘Fónaic le Fís’ places strong emphasis on phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, phonics, and orthographic mapping, all through the medium of Irish. The guiding vision (an fhís) is to ensure that children are not learning sounds in isolation, but are actively using them to read, write, and understand text. The newly released ‘Fónaic le Fís’ decodable readers provide a meaningful way for children to revise taught sounds and put their learning into practice through successful, confident reading.

Bunaithe ar theagasc litearthachta atá bunaithe ar fhianaise agus ailínithe leis an gCuraclam Teanga Bunscoile, cuireann ‘Fónaic le Fís’ béim láidir ar fheasacht fóineolaíochta, feasacht fhóinéimeach, fónaic agus mapáil ortagrafaíoch, uile trí mheán na Gaeilge. Is í an fhís atá taobh thiar den chlár ná a chinntiú nach bhfuil páistí ag foghlaim fuaimeanna ina n-aonar, ach go bhfuil siad á n-úsáid go gníomhach chun léamh, scríobh agus tuiscint a fhorbairt.Cuireann na leabhair dhíchódaithe ‘Fónaic le Fís’, atá ar fáil anois, bealach fiúntach chun fuaimeanna múinte a athdhearbhú agus chun an fhoghlaim a chur i bhfeidhm trí léitheoireacht rathúil agus muiníneach.

Express Decodable Readers is a company founded by current and former teachers with the mission of developing materials, promoting teacher success, and continuously researching best practices to assist teachers in supporting ALL of their students.
Express Decodable Readers aims to provide the highest quality resources and the most comprehensive teacher support possible, resulting in higher literacy rates and more engaged readers. We believe;
EVERY child deserves to learn to read.
Who Are Express Decodable Readers?
Elise Lovejoy is the Founder Express Decodable Readers, as well as a dedicated educator. She has a BA and MA in Elementary Education and has worked in the classroom for over 15 years, teaching grades K-2.

After becoming concerned about the lack of phonics materials and books written by educators who understood the practical implications in classrooms, Elise began writing and developing Express Readers for her students. She successfully created a large collection of phonics books with complete stories and a sense of humor, all based on research on how students learn to read.

Elise threw herself into research and studies, eventually creating a full foundational skills curriculum with the help and input of many incredible educators. Express Readers aims to ensure that all kids have access to literacy education and that all educators have the information, the resources, and a comprehensive engaging program to teach the fundamentals.

Express Decodable Readers are a structured, research-informed reading program designed to help every child become a confident reader through systematic skill development.

Students learn to hear, identify and manipulate sounds in spoken words — the crucial first step in connecting sounds to print. Daily practice builds strong sound awareness that supports all future reading and spelling.

Phonics instruction teaches the relationship between sounds and letters in a clear, sequential way. Skills are practiced and reviewed regularly and applied immediately in decodable texts to reinforce mastery.
Fluency is about reading words accurately, quickly and with expression. Through repeated reading of decodable books and targeted fluency exercises, students develop the automaticity needed for comprehension.
Understanding what words mean is essential for comprehension. Express Readers includes rich vocabulary in texts and activities, supported by visuals and teacher-led discussions to deepen language acquisition.

Once decoding and fluency are secure, students are guided to *understand* and make meaning from text. Lessons and activities help learners think critically and connect ideas as they read.

Phonic Books was created by three reading specialists as a result of their years of experience and the need they saw for decodable books in the classroom to build reading confidence and fluency.
Decoding is the process of reading a word by sounding out the letter sounds and blending them together.
Decodable fiction and non-fiction series available
Designed for children who are learning to read, decodable books are carefully written stories and texts that use only the letter sounds pupils have been taught. They offer pupils the opportunity to practise decoding words, which in turn helps to develop their reading fluency by having them sound out the letters on the page and blend them into words. With repeated practice, children can read words quickly and fluently, gradually recognising them by sight. They also have an opportunity to develop word recognition for high-frequency words that will help them to read fluently.
Decodable books should:
• Contain words using the letter sounds the pupil has learnt
• Provide essential practice of phonics skills
• Encourage children to sound out and decode each word
• Feature fewer than 20% high-frequency words
Created by reading specialists, Phonic Books has a history of delighting and engaging children who are learning to read.

• The books complement any systematic phonics programme and are easy to use in the classroom.
• They offer incremental and cumulative progression through the series.
• There are multiple sets which cover the same phonics progression to ensure that pupils who need extra practice have a new story to engage and motivate them.
• Each series has an accompanying, reproducible workbook that includes teaching and practice activities to support the learner and build their reading confidence.

Dandelion Launchers is a fully decodable phonics series for beginner readers. The series is organised into 20 progressive stages to build a gradual understanding of phonics. Each stage introduces new letters/sounds while supporting previously taught phonics and high-frequency words. It begins with sounds of the alphabet in Units 1–7, progressing to adjacent consonants and consonant digraphs in Units 8–15, then on to two-syllable words and more complex spelling patterns: tch, ve, le and the suffixes -ed and -ing, in Units 16–20. A game is included at the back of each book, offering a fun way to practise the new phonics and knowledge introduced at each stage.

Dandelion World is the parallel series to Dandelion Launchers, and covers a range of engaging non-fiction topics. Each book includes a non-fiction knowledge builder feature for children and adults to read together. This is a fun way to enhance vocabulary and deepen comprehension of the book’s content.

Dandelion Readers is a series of books for beginner readers. The Readers Sets cover the initial phonics code, while the Readers Vowel Spellings introduce different spellings for vowel sounds. Dandelion Readers Split Vowel Spellings covers split vowel or silent ‘e’ spellings. More text than in previous series is included on each page to build reading stamina. A helpful “Reading Practice” section at the back of each book allows further practice of each new spelling taught.

Beanstalk Books is a publishing company that specialises in decodable books. The company was founded by children’s author and co-founder of Junior Learning, Anna Kirschberg.
After 10 years of developing phonics based resources and books, Anna has created a trusted brand of decodable books that deliver transformative reading experiences worldwide. Anna has used her expertise in phonics based instruction and has set about developing purely decodable reading books around a phonics sequence, for young children and older, struggling readers.
Beanstalk Books decodable readers are built on the principles of the science of reading and supports the worldwide movement of evidence based reading instruction.

Anna Kirschberg Founder & CEO
Our mission is to build confidence and learning success for all children at any reading level.
A decodable reading book is a book that only contains letter sounds that a child has already learned. For instance, a child starting out in the earliest stages of reading who has learned the sounds s / a / t / p, would be able to decode words in a book such as at, sat, tap, and pat Therefore, the decodable book would only contain these words and would not introduce any unfamiliar letters and sounds.

Our reading programme is designed to help children build on their reading success and feel a sense of accomplishment as they work their way through each decodable story. Each set of books follows children week-by-week through our scope and sequence providing them text-based context to practise their emerging reading skills. Every story in both the fiction, and non-fiction range of books, has been written with a strictly controlled text.

The Beanstalk Books scope and sequence is a phonics-based reading programme designed to teach the letter patterns of the English language, with the aim of helping children become fluent readers by the age of seven. The programme follows a systematic progression, where children are introduced letters in a specific order (s, a, t, p, i, n, m) and are encouraged to build words and play with these sounds.

The key to the Beanstalk Books programme is the 6-part phase progression on which it is built. There are six phases that we use to break apart the different categories that letter sounds fall into, and as children move through the Phases they can continuously apply skills learned in the previous Phase. These are: Phonemic Awareness ( Phase 1 ); Letter Sounds ( Phase 2 ); Phonics ( Phase 3 ); Adjacent Consonant Blends ( Phase 4); Vowel Sounds ( Phase 5); Sound Families ( Phase 5.5) and Spelling and Affixes ( Phase 6). Overall, the detailed phases can be introduced in terms of the development of phonemic awareness, built upon with the introduction of letter sounds, and move onto more complex spelling patterns and rules.
There are a number of ‘tricky’ words (also termed heart words or common exception words) in the English language, many of which are high frequency and appear in early reading (such as is /i-z/, no /n-oa/ or of /uh-v/). They are used sparingly in decodable readers as they are sometimes needed for comprehension.

Rainbow Phonics is a Systematic Synthetic Phonics Programme that explicitly teaches children letter patterns through a comprehensive scope and sequence. The scope and sequence is designed to build on letter sound knowledge and support decodable readers that are controlled and have vocabulary specifically chosen in accordance with this progression.
The programme is built around the ‘Teach, Practise, Apply’ strategy, and guides teachers and parents on how to apply this themselves. Together, this science-based reading methodology in combination with our wide range of educational resources offers a powerful tool for supporting all readers on the road to reading fluency, spelling proficiency and a love of literacy.
The key to Rainbow Phonics programme is the 6-part phase progression on which it is built. Overall, the detailed phase by phase programme can be introduced from Infants in terms of development of phonemic awareness, built upon with the introduction of letter sounds, move onto more complex spelling patterns in Senior Infants, and finally move onto spelling rules in 1st Class. Affixes and morphology are taught at Phase 6 and naturally follows on to punctuation and grammar instruction.
Rainbow Phonics provides online digital tools for your classroom, including slideshows, trainings and supporting materials. Visit rainbowphonics.co.nz and explore the database of useful digital resources. Most popular are the over 300 slideshows, perfectly aligned to our daily lessons for easy class presentation on an interactive whiteboard or classroom monitor.
