GOALS &INITIATIVES

ith the start of a new year, there is always excitement over the goals and initiatives we set out to accomplish. Likewise, there are many exciting initiatives that we are working on at ABC Keystone for the upcoming year. First, we look to establish the Inclusion, Diversity and Unity committee. Unfortunately, the construction industry has an image problem. For too long, it has been considered a white male profession. While attending the 2021 ABC Leadership Institute, we saw how other chapters are making significant inroads with the minority, women, Veterans and LGBT communities. As we look at an aging workforce, the answer must be attracting new talent to this industry. ABC Keystone and all ABC chapters should tell the story that construction is a great industry in which to work, you can make a good living, and it is an industry for all. There are many of you that are fully engaged in this initiative in your businesses, and I applaud you. We need to take this message to the communities and show the greatness of the construction industry. The second initiative is Total Human Health. At our last ABC Keystone Wake-up Calls we heard about suicide prevention. We had a wonderful panel that presented real-life stories which were very impactful on me. As owners, coworkers, and human beings, we need to put a spotlight on suicide. We cannot expect that people we work with leave their problems at home and come to work clear-headed. How can we expect a parent with a terminally-ill child, an individual

fighting addition, or a coworker getting told by a spouse they are moving out, to come to work and leave that all behind? A statistic from 2018 indicated around 1,000 deaths on job sites. Based on the CDC, that same year more than 5,000 construction workers died by suicide. We need to spend time and talk with the people with whom we work and really get to know them. We need to find a way to connect on a deeper level and care about those we see each day. Who knows when this type of caring may just save a life. To learn more, please visit preventconstructionsuicide.com. The third initiative will be to expand our STEP participation. You have heard this for the last several years from past Chairs. Our incoming National Chair, Stephanie Smith of Poole Anderson, has heard the complaints about the fees associated with the STEP application and has put a plan together to eliminate these fees. Changes have been made to the forms, and as always, ABC Keystone is offering assistance to complete the application. So, what is in it for you to take the time and resources to gather the data? By doing so, you help bolster the legislative initiatives. The Unions have done a great job telling everyone who will listen how safe their workers are due to the training they receive. When ABC Keystone fights back and shows the data of how safe our merit shop members are, we get one big push back. The fact is, less than 30% of our members complete the STEP application. It is difficult to demonstrate that our members provide safe working conditions when many of our construction members do not complete the forms. By completing the STEP application, ABC Keystone has more data to combat the propaganda and to explain why

the 4 to 1 ratio for merit shop contractors needs to change, and prove we are as safe as the union workers. Help us to gather this information and use it to push forward our important political agendas. The last initiative is the election. We have a governor’s election this year. If Josh Shapiro is elected, we can expect more of the same Union-first policies and procedures we see from him as our Attorney General. We ask that you educate yourself on the issues, vote, and encourage everyone else to vote. We have a tough election, but as one of our past Chairs, Roger Brubaker tells us, it is cheaper to defeat him at the polls then to fight and litigate after he is elected. t’s hard to believe that another year has passed, and we are already embarking on a new year. Every new year brings changes, challenges, and opportunities. The way we as a Chapter and our members respond to these issues has made ABC Keystone a high-performing and well-respected chapter. Let’s start by looking at the changes. At the start of every year we welcome a new Board Chair. It is my privilege to welcome and introduce Keith Eldredge, CPA, a partner with the firm of RKL. Keith has been actively involved at ABC Keystone for well over twenty years. We will celebrate him and the incoming Board of Directors at our annual Inaugural Gala and Annual Meeting presented by RKL on Friday, January 7. Visit the ABC website and register to join us and celebrate this annual event. The next traditional annual change is the start of all our new year committee work. Every year over 250 members volunteer to serve on committees. This is the lifeblood of our organization, and this group of volunteers will help implement our new three-year strategic plan. If you have not done so, please sign up for a committee and register to attend our All Committee Kick-off on January 12, 2022. What challenges will 2022 bring? It goes without saying that we will continue to navigate the everchanging landscape of COVID-19. Whether it’s your Keystone Chapter providing updates or the entire association fighting government mandates, we are here to keep you up to date. We also have an extremely important mid-term election year. We need to keep Josh Shipiro out of the governor’s office. We need to retain the Senate seat being vacated by Pat Toomey, and we need to regain control of both the Senate and the House. Only through these wins will we keep bad legislation like the PRO Act out of your businesses. We will provide timely, important information as the year moves forward.

What opportunities lie ahead of us? ABC Keystone will continue a strong focus on workforce development. That includes working on bringing new blood into our industry as well as upscaling and providing educational opportunities for existing employees. A new initiative on the under-employed and those re-entering the workforce will be a focus of Chapter energy. New educational opportunities will be offered to help you, the members, keep your workforce sharp and up to date. If there is something your employees need, and you don’t see it in our courses, please reach out to us. 2021 was a very good year for the Chapter, the Board, and our membership. Join me in making 2022 even better!

While working at the counter, I was offered a job as a plumbing apprentice by a plumbing contractor. I decided to take the job to further my career. I always wanted to learn a trade so I could work anywhere in the world. My first weeks were labor-intensive, as I was busting concrete to install shower drains in an apartment complex. I thought I made the biggest mistake of my life. Regardless of the long days and my blistered hands, I stuck with it. I’m not a quitter, and I was determined to see it through. The more jobs I worked on, and the more I learned, the more I realized that I loved plumbing and working in Mechanical Services Inc. the mechanical industry. It was what I wanted to do. That was 35 years ago, and I still love the satisfaction and challenges that come with the job. Classes Continue Full Speed Ahead! It was beginning to look a lot like... Well, you may say “Christmas,” and since I wrote this in December, you would be accurate. However, here at ABC, it was/and is looking like apprenticeship training is in full swing. Classes started in September, and the Shop/ Training Lab at the Chapter facility has been busy with hands-on training during all our trade classes. While it is important that apprentices learn the theory of their trade and the “how’s and why’s,” it has been our main goal–while expanding our building and hiring full-time instructors–to increase hands-on education opportunities in every apprenticeship class. As you can see from some of these photos, we are working towards that goal. I would encourage you to check out our training facility if you are in the building and see first-hand what our classes have been learning. Plumbing classes are taught by Randy Doxzon, and the following are some highlights from his classes over the last month: Plumbing 1 – Safety and how it impacts jobs and companies. Plumbing 2 – Fire-Stopping along with Installing and testing DWV systems. Plumbing 3 – Water Treatment. Students brought water in from their own homes and tested it. They also covered types of vents and sizing of DWV and storm water systems. The class completed worksheets to size systems. Plumbing 4 – Indirect and Special Waste along with Hydronic and Solar Heating Systems. The class did a takeoff for the shop boiler that they will install next class. Also, Vernon Bitzer came into class to do HTP boiler training. HVAC is taught by our newest instructor Derek Robbins. Below are some highlights from his classes over the past month. HVAC 1 – Basic Electricity. The class drew basic wiring diagrams for electrical circuits in class and then wired them in the shop. HVAC 2 – Compressors and Refrigerants and Oils. This

class began piping for refrigeration mock-up HVAC 3 – Troubleshooting Cooling. The class installed air conditioning systems and trouble shot different issues. They also worked on wire cooling circuits on wiring boards while troubleshooting. HVAC 4 – Indoor Air Quality and Water Treatment. This class took samples of boiler system and tested for pH, iron and hardness. They also performed IAQ evaluations on roof top units. Sheet Metal 1 is also taught by Derek Robbins, and this year is the first time that ABC has had day classes for this trade. Our level 1 apprentices are enjoying the day classes and have been using the tools and equipment of the trade to fabricate toolboxes from a drawing. They have used a plasma arc cutter (the first time for most of the students) to fabricate a fan bracket from sheet steel and then bended the backet to the shape specified in the drawing. appy New Year! From a political perspective, 2022 will be filled with drama, excitement, and fun-filled opportunities for you to be at the forefront. Let’s start with the U.S. Congress. This year marks first year congressional candidates will be running in new districts. Per the decennial census, Pennsylvania lost a seat, going from 18 to 17 congresspersons. This mean that along with district lines, legislative leaders had to merge two seats. At the time of this writing, leaders in Harrisburg released the first draft of a preliminary map, which started a 30day clock for public comment. The new maps must go through the entire legislative process and the governor must sign-off (unless there are votes for a veto override). There could be legal challenges depending on the outcome of the legislative process and how contentious the talks will be. Regardless, the timeline is extremely tight, as session days are short, and candidates begin circulating petitions in mid-February. If you are interested in reviewing or commenting on the congressional map, you can go to www.paredistricting.com. Along with the congressional map, all 253 legislative districts will be re-drawn, which is done via a separate

process from the congressional re-districting. The outcome if this process is unlikely to change the Republican majorities and there have not been announcements of retirements as was typical in prior years. This points to a fairly “status quo” outcome in the general election when it comes to the legislature. This leaves us with the U.S. Senate and gubernatorial races. Pennsylvania will again be in the spotlight. As of mid-December 2021, on the Republican side for governor, there are close to 20 candidates in the running. On the Democratic side for governor, Josh Shapiro, who is the current Attorney General, “cleared the field” long ago and is the lone candidate. That’s not the case for U.S. Senate, where there is long list of Republican and Democratic candidates running for the open seat. Experts expect tens of millions of dollars to be poured into races on both sides of the aisle. This is where you come in. Throughout the year, ABC will strive to provide as many opportunities as possible for you to meet with candidates and ask questions. In addition, there are many ways for you to financially contribute to ABC’s political action accounts. You can go to https:// abckeystone.org/advocacy-political-action/#national for more information on ways to contribute. With the amount of money expected to be dumped into these races, as an association, we need to get behind candidates that support our issues and continue to build relationships so we can accomplish our public policy goals, so please get involved! Speaking of public policy, ABC had a successful year. Your membership and grassroots advocacy helped strengthen our voice in Harrisburg and get our message across. Just a few successes include: • Issued a first-ever report on Pennsylvania’s apprenticeship system. ABC National used our report as a best practice/sample for other ABC chapters to model.

• Held our first in-person ‘Free Enterprise Day’ since the pandemic.

• Presented testimony to various committees on issues of importance.

Griffith to its board of directors. CASA works to provide a competent, responsible, and compassionate courtappointed community volunteer to advocate for each child who faces abuse, neglect, and/or abandonment, according to its website. The goal is to restore their well-being and ensure the eminent right to a safe, nurturing, and permanent home. Griffith joined Barley Snyder in September after graduating from Widener University Delaware Law School, where he was an articles editor for the Widener Law Review. RKL to Merge with Chambersburg-based Public Accounting Firm Lancaster-based advisory firm RKL will expand into Franklin and Adams counties following a newly announced merger with Chambersburg-based Rotz & Stonesifer P.C. I’m the Sales Account Manager for Central PA and for anywhere my clients/partners need me (even across the country). I focus on consulting with companies who are looking to streamline and integrate internal systems and software to cloud based solutions, which ultimately leads to more accurate and reliable data especially when it’s needed most. My goal is to help create a single sign on tech stack for the entire employee life cyle. While ADP is known for payroll, it is only 20% of what we can provide our clients.

Why do you wake up and go to work every day?

I am blessed to have two wonderful children that look up to me both in the home and out. Showing them that having a successful career has its rewards is important for various reasons. The two that stick out the most is responsibility and resilience. If you want something, you need to work hard for it and stick through it even in hard times. I also love what I do! I have worked at ADP for eight years now, and every day I am able to provide perspective to C-Level Execs, HR personnel, and CPA’s on what is changing in the market and how to operate more efficiently now and in the years to come. I don’t just help create solutions for businesses as they grow, I create solutions to help them grow!

What are your hobbies?

Aside from keeping two tiny humans alive and out of trouble, we recently bought a vacation/rental down in Elkton, MD where we boat as often as we can. Exploring new beaches, parks, and restaurants along the way has created the best memories for us over the last year. I also LOVE to cook and bake. For me, it’s a stress reliever, as crazy as that may sound. I don’t often play volleyball anymore, but my husband is a college football coach, so we are a football/sports household all year long.

What is your favorite or inspirational quote?

I have this printed above my desk and in my planner (yes I carry an actual planner still) - “What would you attempt to do 22

if you knew you could not fail.” To me this applies in the workplace and at home as well. Life is short, and often we talk about dreams and ambitions, but we don’t act on them. If failing wasn’t an option, would you act on your dreams sooner? I like to remind myself that waking up every day is a blessing and to not take it for granted.

What is the last book you read?

“Start with Why” by Simon Sinek – The whole premise of the book is teaching us the difference between what we do and how we are different, and instead WHY we are inspired to wake up every day and how we can help to inspire those around us.
