Excellence in Construction Awards
Celebrating the Best of the Best in Merit Shop Construction
Excellence in Construction ABC Keystone recognizes the outstanding work performed on projects by local member contractor firms during the annual ABC Excellence in Construction Awards Celebration. One of the main program goals is to create a greater awareness of the quality workmanship produced by free enterprise contractors within the community. Winners of the chapter competition are then eligible to compete at the national level for recognition and prestige among all ABC members. This program not only provides ABC members with a venue to share and promote their work, but it also allows construction buyers to view the tremendous capabilities of ABC member firms.
Eligibility Any contractor member of ABC Keystone in good standing may enter.
Judging ABC Keystone’s panel of volunteer judges represents a cross-section of the industry, including local design professionals and engineers. Projects are judged on execution of design, craftsmanship, safety, attention to detail, proper installation, evidence of extraordinary effort, owner satisfaction and other considerations. Judges evaluate the projects based on submission and site visits, if necessary. An accounting firm tabulates the completed scores.

ABC Keystone is proud to celebrate the industry leaders in free enterprise construction in South Central Pennsylvania
Awards The Excellence Award, the top honor, is given to the highest scoring project in each category, provided it earned at least 90 points. The Merit Award, second place, is given to projects that scored 80 or above in each category. All other entrants earn a Certificate of Commendation. Separate judging for Project of the Year Award is based on: (1) client satisfaction, (2) community impact, (3) design features and (4) positive notoriety or high-profile nature of the project.

Congratulations to Last Year’s Project of the Year Award Winners:
Benchmark Construction Co., Inc. & James Craft & Son, Inc. Frederick Street Patient Tower Overbuild The Frederick Street Patient Tower Overbuild project consisted of a six-story overbuild and expansion of Lancaster General Hospital’s existing Stauffer building, which occupies the northeast corner of the hospital’s site. Construction in, around, and overtop of a busy hospital does not come without its fair share of challenges. Building vertically on a tight, landlocked site created several of these challenges. Benchmark was able to successfully coordinate steel delivery to the site to continue building while alternating with concrete delivery to pour the completed decking as the building rose. James Craft & Son, Inc. was hired to perform the mechanical piping and HVAC for the vertical expansion and received many deliveries at their warehouse to transport to the jobsite. Working in an occupied facility next to highly sensitive areas while minimizing the disruption to the hospital staff’s ability to treat patients was the highest priority.
